The flag is in the Smithsonian. The British had already sacked Washington DC abd burned the White House. That armt was threatening Baltimore. The fleet was threatening Ft McHenry. Had they been successful, America would have been dvided in two----much like Sherman did to the south during the Civil War. It basically would have meant the end of the USA. The story is embellished---but basically true. Our flag must never touch the ground, nor bow to any other. This flg doesn;t just stand for America,, but for the dream if freedom, justice, and liberty.
Yeah after downing the fort these ships were meant to take the harbor and land troops to flank the cities defenders.
Which is a fascinating story in itself where in the first moments of battle the British Commander General Robert Ross was killed by one of two teenage American sharpshooter who fired near simultaneously.
This threw the British command into disarray and helped win the land battle.
It stands for our rights, our freedom for each one of us. Of the People, By the People, For the People.

I am 67 years old and was obviously raised in an era which revered the flag, the anthem and of course America. I wonder often how we've come so far as a country to become so lost in our values. No matter how many times I see people react to this video, my eyes still well up with tears. That you for that solemn, respectful reaction and your reverence to it's full meaning and value.

We’re not lost in all our values. We are vastly improving on many fronts, such as the racism, misogyny and homophobia that were so characteristic in your earlier era. Perhaps the flag means less now because it has become more and more visible that the Liberty it was meant to symbolize was denied to many for so long. If we’re progressing to a point where we revere justice and liberty and our neighbors more I can sacrifice revering symbols less.

Something that choked me up was when the US was playing hockey in Canada. The audio at the venue went out and the Canadian people started singing the American national anthem.
We also sung the Canadian national anthem in the US for the same reason. That's love between the people of two countries. God bless America. God bless Canada.
Canada played an important role on 911.The people of Canada 🇨🇦 took in Americans, fed them, made sure we had a place to sleep and shower. A few even drove Americans back to their homes in the US. What amazing neighbors. I love the people of Canada 🇨🇦.

Today is Remembrance Day in Canada. Its observed on November 11 to recall the end of the First World War. Hostilities ended "at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month" of 1918. Of course now its to honour ALL veterans of all the wars

THIS is why I'm torn in two! As a military Veteran, I respect our right to protest or even disrespect the Flag BUT... it unnerves me that those people have no clue what that Flag represents gives them those rights. They will never understand what they take for granted and it breaks my heart.
Unfortunately, the flag doesn't represent the same things to everyone. To us vets, it is a physical representation of the hardships, sacrifice, and loss of being one of less than 6% of Americans to answer the call to duty. To some it represents a history of oppression, inequality or corruption, etc. Both viewpoints are equally valid. We knew going into our respective branches that we were the ones making the sacrifices so others wouldn't have to. The fact that most people are ignorant of what freedom actually costs is proof in my eyes that our sacrifices, no matter how great or small, were not made in vain.

Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic; that you will bear true faith and allegiance to the same, and that you will obey all orders of the President of the United States and all officers appointed over you according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Your oath had nothing to do with any flag.

American bodies held the Flag to show the American resolve of strength and independence. You speak to us vets and do not include yourself as taking the oath, one would conclude that you have never been prepared to lay your life down for your country. This highlights that we vets sacrificed so you can speak of your foolishness and prove our point that non-veterans will never understand our sentiment towards the Flag.
This!!! EXACTLY THIS!! I am from a HUGE military family, and served in the Navy as well. I do not have to like those that burn the flag, or kneel during the anthem....but it is one of the CORE freedoms all who served fought, bled and died to grant. DOESN'T mean I have to like it, but it IS their right.

There was no pile of bodies holding up the flag. And Washington never said the line about "Americans would rather die on their feet than live on their knees."

Mayflower Descendant and Daughter of the American Revolution over here! 1620 & 1709 respectively. Have had a family member in every conflict/war the US (including as colonists) has been involved in since the French-Indian War. Including myself, for a year, until medical discharge
If you want to know if this would happen today, ask any US Marine. So many still do to this day risk thier lives for the flag. When we left Vietnam a marine wouldn't get on the helicopter without the flag. When the embassy was attacked in Beruit the same happened some men died and others risked thier lives for the flag. We still risk and give our lives for our flag and freedom.
Now you see why so many were upset with those who would kneel (Kaepernick, Rapinoe) during the National Anthem!

As an old vet, from childhood, we were taught the Pledge of Allegiance and The National Anthem. Having been a member of THE largest volunteer military force in the world. We wear the flag with pride, we fly the flag with pride, and when asked to do so, we also give of ourselves the honor of coming home draped in that flag. To our patriots, if you pay the ultimate price, then the ultimate honor is being draped in The U.S.Flag. We appreciate you taking the time to maybe, just maybe, let everyone know why we are a proud country. We are a young country, comparatively, and we have a lot to learn. I'm 73 now and served in the Vietnam War for 6 years. Every time I hear the Star Spangled Banner I get choked up and sometimes shed uncontrollable tears. It brings me back to the horror of war and the bravery, integrity, and honor of the men I served with, their deaths, their maiming, as well as the mental damage of the terrible experiences no man is prepared for nor the fear. This song makes me very proud to be an American. Thank you for reacting to this, Our National Anthem.
Thank you for your service and I don't say that as empty lip service. I truly mean it, thank you so much. My father did 3 tours in Vietnam during the Vietnam war so I heard some very hard to imagine without being there stories, but I know he withheld most of the real nightmare fuel because I was still very young. He passed before I was an adult so I didn't fully realize the horror he had seen and dealt with or the things he had to do until much later in life. I wish I could of been more thankful to him but i just was too young to have a real understanding of that-though of course, I still don't have a real understand. You have to have gone through that yourself to truly get it and I am very grateful that I never had to face what he faced. I have the utmost respect for our veterans.
I was born in Canada but moved to America as a child. Patriotism is part of our culture here because we had to fight and die to create our country. I served this great nation in the navy and my oath to protect it with my life will never expire. Our level of pride and patriotism is a mystery to people in other nations. I lived in Baltimore for a few years, and some articles revealed that many who gave their lives to keep the flag up were freed black men. Maryland ended slavery at the end of the revolution.

I feel so bad for the veterans of the past and the present to have made such a sacrifice in their life for our country, and having to see it so disrespected buy our own people. yessir, we look a little ratty, but, when I see our dents and scars I think about what my wife said about my wounds and scars " I love you, all of you scars included, they aren't smudges on the rest of you, the unscarred parts are the banners of respect for them. " or something like that lol been a while. This also has significance because during the fighting styles of the Revolution, War of 1812 & the Civil War, they had to have flag bearers ON the battlefield. So through the smoke & noise, you could see your flag & orientate accordingly. The man carrying the flag was a TARGET, when they would fall, another would have to pick it up. Knowing he had a great chance of being killed for it. We honor all those who literally DIED for the honor of bearing the colors. 🇺🇸

Thanks for doing this. I am an USAF Air Force veteran. Canadians are good people. And I know your anthem from being a lifelong hockey fan and hearing it sung, and singing along, at hundreds of games - I'm a senior citizen - where a Canadian team was playing a US based team. And I like the small change that was made in the Canadian lyrics not that long ago. Congrats you will be at 100K subscribers soon. I 'm one of them.
I am a veteran and have provided service to my country and I am humbly grateful for your appreciation for our service. Air Force Munitions troop from 2013 -2019 with 1 deployment from January - August to Al Udeid Qatar. Even 200 years ago, the star spangled banner means tons to me now, with lack of comparison to the ones involved 200 years ago. Those patriots are the ones that should be celebrated. The difference is great and we have such a much better life than they ever had.

Whitney Houston 1991 singing the National Anthem is as good as it gets - it was so popular it was released as a single. Whitney gave all proceeds to the war effort. Ray Charles singing "America The Beautiful" in the middle of a baseball stadium at his piano brings me endless joy & pride. Both are ALWAYS worth a reaction video to.
I remember back when, there was a movement going on to replace " The Star Spangled Banner " with " America the Beautiful " as the national anthem by the usual suspects. Which made me laugh, because " America the Beautiful " is just rewritten words to " God Save the King/Queen " Britain's national anthem.
Back then it was being touted as a ' warmongering ' song. Because those people weren't taught what the event was that played out that led up to the writing of the poem that eventually became our Anthem.

I agree. As a veteran of the US Air Force, this song means so much to me and will always hold a special place in my heart. I love your reaction to it and the respect you, as Canadians give it. I grew up not far from Fort McHenry (not Ft Henry). My father received his cancer treatments form the VA Hospital there. All but one of the males in my family served in the military. My father was in the Army in WW II, 3 of my brothers were in the Navy and obviously from my picture you can tell I was a Marine. My son was in the Army (Iran and Afghanistan). So we are and were patriotic. I learned the history of the National Anthem in Jr High School. The only male in my family who is not still alive is my father. I am sure that all still alive in my family including my two sisters and my daughter stand proudly for our National Anthem and for our flag.
I have 2 special days this month. The Marine Corps Birthday 10 Nov. and Veterans day 11 Nov.

We had to study American History and World History, so we know quite a bit of history that other countries don't know about. Never give an American an ultimatum!
The very fortified fort was hardly hurt and only the four men holding the flag up were killed in the one-sided battle. We built things to last back in the day!

I'm a73 year old Vietnam War veteran and i believe with my entire being that we should pay respect to our flag. It's a symbol of our country, our rights and our freedoms. Paying respect to the flag is also paying respect to all of the men and women who died protecting our rights and freedoms. To disrespect our flag is to disrespect the heroes who fought and died for our country. In my opinion, if a person wants to disrespect our flag, they are free to move elsewhere. We don't want them here.
They, literally in the millions, will never move from the USA and they will continue to disrespect everything our nation has done for them. They will never serve in harm's way. Vietnam War veteran 6-years

Hi Phil & Sam, Most Americans don't know the words, the story or who wrote the words. I recently just heard & saw this video in recent years and made me patriotic to be American and a Human😔
As far as I know, it is taught in the curriculum of most east coast states, which makes sense because it is our regional and national history. Cant speak for other regions of the nation, but that's a large portion of the US population who do learn it.

And if you watch the words on the screen as this guy is singing, many are the wrong words. Its sloppy, pathetic and disrespectful. Not to mention its slanted as a "Christian" anthem, which is a complete misunderstanding of why the United States was founded and fought the British Empire for independence.

47 years later Abraham Lincoln put Frank Key Howard, the grandson of Francis Scott Key, in prison at For McHenry. Frank Howard was a Baltimore newspaper editor and his "crime" was penning an article disagreeing with the Civil War. Here's what Howard wrote about being imprisoned there:
"When I looked out in the morning, I could not help being struck by an odd and not pleasant coincidence. On that day forty-seven years before my grandfather, Mr. Francis Scott Key, then prisoner on a British ship, had witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry. When on the following morning the hostile fleet drew off, defeated, he wrote the song so long popular throughout the country, "The Star-Spangled Banner". As I stood upon the very scene of that conflict, I could not but contrast my position with his, forty-seven years before. The flag which he had then so proudly hailed, I saw waving at the same place over the victims of as vulgar and brutal a despotism as modern times have witnessed."
cool story, also like how you left out the part he was a southern sympathizer. Or that his entire line ( Francis Scott Key's ) fought for the Confederacy. Cool story though, way to only put in part of a narrative.
The point when you spoke about the sacrifices made by those before us hit me personally. My ancestors have fought in every single conflict/war that the United States has been involved in. My family arrived on these shores in the 1630s. My father made a point to tell my brother and me that he did what he did in Vietnam, so that we wouldn't have to go to war. They fold a flag when you are buried after serving in the military. He has a case with his grandfather's flag, his father's flag, and a space for his flag. He said that there will only be three flags in this case. It stops with me. That hits hard. Thanks for the reaction video. It means more than you realize.

@@jennyjorgensen9935 The grade school teachers are not allowed to teach the children our American history. like they did in the 1950's. In the last three years if they try they get fired from their jobs. So our children learn we don't have a good heritage. That's the main reason there is so much hatred and division in our country in 2024. And yes this happened in the War of 1812.

As a US Army veteran I would like to thank you for learning about and showing respect toward our national history. I feel pride in my country and our national symbols, I wish people were more respectful, as you two are. I had the pleasure of working with a few Canadian soldiers for a short time, and was impressed by their knowledge and abilities.
Now people can understand why Americans are so proud of our country. I can't listen to this without tears. Every. Time.

Beautiful reaction! As an Air Force brat growing up and now having dual citizenship (US and Canadian), it pains me to watch what the politicians in the US are doing to the country.
I was a signalman in the US Navy between 1976 and 1982 ! We were in charge of of rising the flag at sunrise and taking it down at sunset ! The Six Fleet Admiral was on our ship so all the other ships had to rise it at the same time as us ! And if were were late OMG =( The best version of the "Star Spangled Banner" is by Whitney Houston at the Super Bowl in my opinion . Thanks Y'all

If you go to the Smitsonian that flag from this story does still exist. It is torn to shreds, but it still survives.

We proudly honor our flag for everything it stands for and honor our veterans and those who serve in our military today to keep America free.
