On average, people spend about 7 hours per day looking at a digital screen. That number is only increasing every year. Due to health concerns, not just for the eyes, it is recommended to try and reduce screen time to 2 hours per day. There are many eye symptoms that come from staring at a screen. Dry eyes, blurry vision, headaches, eye strain, and red eyes are among the top. All of these symptoms can be classified under computer vision syndrome, or digital eye strain. Dr. EyeGuy (Dr. Guymon) spends 24 hours looking at a digital screen without sleeping to demonstrate what this screen time can do to the eye. Due to reduced blink rate, and incomplete blinks, dry eyes took a toll on the surface of the eyes. It's important to remember to take breaks, reduce screen time when you can, remember to blink, do blinking exercises, and use artificial tears as well.

What's the longest you have looked at a screen? How did your eyes feel?
Thanks for this video!
Amazing video! Really, really interesting.
Thanks! It was a fun, and not so fun one to make.
Really great job, Dod
Thank you Dr. Bob! Love your channel!
Hi Eye Guy 😎 nice video 📹 and workmanship sorry you had to worry about your eyes 👀 more than usual
Thanks! It was definitely a challenging video to do.
You are so awesome! Love your videos!!!
Thank you! 🙂
The inside of the upper and lower eyelids can be grasped together with the index and the thumb to form a singular rim. Repeat pinch until grasp then knead when have grasp until relief. Corners can be grasped. After massage I use index knuckle and roll it to pupil. Lightly touch eye with eye closed. Pressure all around socket
Off topic - I'm seeing RUclips ads for glasses using snippets of your videos for a Dr. Myers or Meyers.
Yeah... I'm trying to get them to stop. I have reported them multiple times. Thanks for letting me know you are seeing them as well.
Can you make a video on the best sunglasses for eyes/ dry eye and photophobia
I do have a video about dry eye glasses... some options with sunglasses, but I can look into doing a specific sunglass video.
Never thought that any Doctor would do any experiment like this 😂
Great Information you got there with the full explanation!
I was seriously curious how it would affect me. Probably won't do it again though... we will see. 😁
We need reference, without staring a screen and wake up 24 hours !!!!
True. I'll see if I can plan another day of staying awake for 24 hours without screens. I can say, just the feeling of my eyes aren' nearly as bad on days I don't sit at a computer screen all day. Even if it's just 15 hours. I've had plenty of days like that and my eyes weren't as red and didn't feel as dry.
You're insane, haha! I'm surprised uour eyed weren't full blown bloodshot by the end. My eyes would have looked like a demon by then. And I'm going to have to pay attention to my incomplete blinks, I didn't realize how big of a deal that can be.
It was pretty annoying at the end of the 24 hours. I want to do the test again but use drops, or take breaks, or something like that... but.... it wasn't a fun test to do. 😄 So I'll probably wait until next year. Haha!
Hey how do bright lights affect/ damage the eye. Just in the visible spectrum. From work lights, headlights, headlamps.
Also clear sunglasses and the sun
Visibible spectrum of light usually is considered safe for vision and eyes. Areas of study have been in the the HEV (high energy visible) light, like blue light. As well as how some other wavelengths affect us. Like green wavelength light have some benefits. It also can depend on the person. I also believe that there is a lot more research to be done on this topic as well. Not sure what you are asking abou tthe clear sunglasses and the sun.
What are the reasons why many eye doctors often underdiagnose or completely miss seeing chalasis in a slit lamp exam? Is it really difficult to see? Does it get mistaken for looking like something else?
It's not really difficult to see. But it can be related to other eye conditions like dry eye, blepharitis, and allergies, etc. It's possible many doctors are wanting to treat those conditions which would hopefully treat the chalasis as well.
Can u please recommend me best yellow tint blue light blocking glass without magnification power i dont have any problem in my vision i was planning to buy gunnar optiks but it has magnification power does it affect my eyes if i have no problem in my vision??
Gamer Advantage are really nice. I have been testing some of their glasses out for a few weeks now.
@@DrEyeGuy Magnification power affect my eyes or not i dont have vision problem ?? iam only using phone
This was an informative video. Thanks. I have macular degeneration in both eyes and also have dry eye. If I use a computer or watch tv, my eyes are “fogged over” for the rest of the day. It sucks that I can no longer drive.
Sorry to hear that! Have you tried eye drops or anything to see if it would help?
Yes, for the past month and a half. Sadly, it doesn’t seem to help much. I appreciate your response.
Have you had an eye doctor check your eyes after your computer or tv use? Just curious if there is a difference in the appearance of the surface of your eyes.
@@DrEyeGuy No, I haven’t. It is difficult to see an eye doctor in my neck of the woods. A person must schedule months in advance.
May you try doing this while using blue light blocking? I’m curious if there will be a difference. Also, does lack of sleep cause oil to get stuck in the oil glands?
I think all tear layer production goes down with lack of sleep, including oil gland production. I may try this experiment again.... maybe doing eye drops during the day, or just taking breaks. But... we will see... it wasn't a fun experiment to do... lol.
@@DrEyeGuy does less oil gland production cause the oil to get stuck and cause a bump? lol I definitely understand and wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t do another experiment. Thank you for the one you already did.
poor oil production, and poor oil consistency can lead to "bumps" or "styes" or even small little while head bumps.
What was your tbut at the start of this experiment
Doctor, is it ok to use sodium hyaluronate 0.18% w/v eye drops on a regular basis? I bet I have severe dry eyes
sodium hyaluronate is used in a lot of great aritifial tears. I don't have any specific experience with the exact drops you have mentioned however.
An ophthalmologist told me that it would be extremely risky to try to replace the artificial lens after a Yag laser procedure. I thought it is risky to change an artificial lens even if you don't do a Yag procedure? Why did the doctor say that?
I'm assuming the YAG procedure is for treatment of a PCO (posterior capsular opacification). This PCO is considererd a secondary cataract people can get that happens on the capsular bag. They use YAG to remove the central portion of the bag to clear off that opacification to the improve vision. This leaves a "hole" in the back of the bag. I'm guessing that may be why he said that. With a hold in the bag of the bag... can make IOL replacement trickier.
I recently developed super dry eyes (as a side effect of one of my meds), and I noticed that it starts to get super dry when I'm really tired at night even when not looking at a screen. But it gets worse when I had to look at a screen and had to work on something during the night. My eyes gets super dry that it won't even feel my eye drops and would always end up using a lot until the solution starts to roll don't my eyes. I use both Hylo Gel and Systane Hydration.
Thank you for sharing. Have you found any other dry eye treatments that have helped at all?
magnification power affect my eyes? i dont have problem in my vision and iam suffering eye pain and irritation i am still wearing a blue cut glasses it doesn't block that much only 10 or 20% i think so planning to buy gunnar riot
The pain and irritation may be from something else... possible dryness or keratitis like I show in this video. Have you had your eyes checked by and eye doc?
@@DrEyeGuy yes my eyes are checked by doctor and the doctor prescribe me a blue blocking glass from zeiss and icyfresh eye drops and vitacurmintablet zeiss glass literally waste of money sometime my eyes pain, irritation and now i bought yellow tint glasses from zebrianna quite good still testing weather it blocks blue light or cause any pain
can u do this experiment with a scleral lense ?
I would have to get fit with a scleral lens to be able to wear it that long. Maybe with normal contact lens wear would be doable.
@@DrEyeGuy I have KC and wears sclerals does that makes me like immune to dry eye or I need to keep using drops cuz I can keep my eyes open for 5min with no dryness lol should I do that or not its bad for my eyes and sclerals ???
this is one of the reasons scleral lenses can be awesome. It provides a solution protection to the cornea. People can still get dryness and inflammation on the scleral however. That portion can still be exposed when keeping eyes open.
Lots of screen time hear. gave me strabismus estropia, but i was way over prescribed at the time. Now i am stuck with double vision for the rest of my life
Woah.. sorry to hear that. Is the double vision helped with the correct glasses?
@@DrEyeGuy Prisms help my fusion but I cant tolerate switching in and out of them since their only in my distance pair. I'm stuck between different doctors telling me to use prism and others to get surgery.
What was your tbut at the start and the end ? Please tell
Around 8 seconds for both eyes
@@DrEyeGuy nice and what was tbut at the end of 24 hoirs you didn't mention in the video you only showed dry spots
@@user-rq7bs8is6t 6-7 on the left, 4-5 on right.
@@DrEyeGuy thanks 6-7 sec and 4-5 at the end of 24 hours you right eye tbut drop drastically 💀
I can't manage to sit on pc for 2 hours dude . 😮. 😢
IPL how dose it effect the eye ?
Yeah... when I hit the hour mark... I regretted doing this experiment. Haha!
IPL is a great tool to help with dry eyes, styes, demodex blepharitis, rosacea, and others. We actually have it in our office for our patients. It isn't a fix all for everybody, but most people that are good candidates get some type of benefit out of it, even if it's just skin benefits.
Perfect. Wish you doing fine now 😁. How many IPL treatments do a person need to get rid of the symptoms so you think? I had 5 now and still red in my eye
Sorry to hear that... 3-4 treamtents is usually a good indicator if it will help or not. Some people it may take longer though.
What is your baseline TBUT before doing this?
That morning was about 6 or 7 seconds in my left eye. About 5 in my right eye. My normal TBUT is about 8 for both on a "normal" day.
@@DrEyeGuyhey my tbut is 4-5 sec but I have constant symptoms could there be a neuropathic component cause my doc says eye are not that dry
It's always possible. neuropathic componenets can be tricky sometimes to figure out though.
@@user-rq7bs8is6t a normal TBUT is 10 seconds and above, so 4-5 seconds is considered dry, I’m not sure why you’re doctor would say they are not that dry considering your low TBUT.
What was your tbut at the end of 24 hours ?
6-7 on the left, 4-5 on the right with a good blink.
@@DrEyeGuy thank you
