    Dr. EyeGuy explains the causes of dry eyes, and discusses the dry eye symptoms that you might not expect. Many eye symptoms, such as blurry vision, watery eyes, and light sensitivity can all be from dry eyes. Chronic dry eye disease, dry eye syndrome, can have many different causes, and have many different symptoms. Dr. Neal Guymon discusses dry eyes: symptoms and causes. It's important to understand the causes of dry eyes, so that dry eye symptoms can be better understood. Dr. Guymon will briefly discuss the different tear layers of the tear film. The water layer can be reduced from Lasik for example. Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) can decrease the oil layer of the tears. The main focus of this video is about the many different symptoms of dry eye syndrome. Some dry eye symptoms can be really surprising and confusing, such as light sensitivity and watery eyes.

    Great video. I have experienced almost all those symptoms. Some of which I didn't know were related to dry eyes! Growing up I thought of teary eyes, sensitive to light, itchy eyes, scratchy eyes, burning eyes, swollen eyelids, little pimple looking things on eyelids were just part of me "normal". Went to an eye specialist about 6 years ago and he told me I have very little oil in my eyes!

    after 20 years of painful debilitating dry eyes (from vision correction surgery, then getting clothing detergent in my eyes. My fault) I moved to a Harbin hot springs, worked three days a week there, used the sauna, hot and cold Springs morning and night, and the dryness is more or less under control. It was 6 to 10 months of that.? Circulation and cleaning it is the key.

      @sanketpatel5146 Hi, I'm feeling much much better. Before, after seeing blue light for a few seconds it would hurt my eyes, but not anymore. I can see blue light for longer. But taking a break from blue light was the thing that especially helped me, but the heat mask from the brand Optase $20, also brought a lot of relief I would do it 2 times a day, 10 minutes each and the eye drops, I think the best ones are Systane Complete Dry Eye Care Symptom Relief Eye Drops there in a gold/white/purple box, $15, and I would put them on every 2 hours, putting my fingers on the corners of my eyes for 2 minutes after putting the eye drops on so they could absorb better and not leak out. 👍

    Great video!
    It's crazy but i have all the symptoms you described, (except for the watery eyes.) Now, i know why i have these symptoms. And i also know that i have dry eyes. In 2009, i've been diagnosed with leukemia. And to treat that i had to get a stemcel-transplantation, (In 2010.) After 2yrs. My body started to reject the stemcel's and in a matter of 2 weeks, i ended up in a wheelchair and i never came out of it. I lived with a lot of pain since then. In the end, i was diagnosed with Graft Versus Host Disease, (GVHD.) "Funny" enough, it is an eye-doctor that found out that i had GVHD. Because the first signs of GVHD were found on my eyes. I had indeed dry eyes. The feeling of something foreign in it. The feeling of sandy eyes. etc... Like i said: Literally everything you described except for the watery eyes. This has been going on for years. I've been trying different methodes. Fluid/ointment/salve's... (All by subscription of an eye-doctor btw.) But nothing helped or really just a little bit.) But i've had pain for years and the fatigue/soreness was also a very big part the last couple of years. The eye-doctor even tried some kind of subscription were they take my own blood and mixed that up to make eye-drops.
    After all these years. A couple of months ago, they decided to start with scleral lenses. I can't describe how happy i am! Once i put in my scleral lenses, the pain was instantly gone! I can obviously see better as well. I can stand the light much better as well and the "hazy/foggy/blurriness" has all disappeared because of it. I can hold them in for a complete day. After of course hours of wearing them (i think around the 8-10hr. mark) they start to irritate. But you can easily drop some eye-liquid in or take out your lenses and fill them with new liquid in it. Your eyes might get fatigued of course and it's better to let your eyes rest a bit if that's the case. Always take your scleral lenses out of course! let them sit in a liquid solution (that your eye doctor subscribed to you.) In my case, it is "Ever Clean+." But it might be different in your case.
    Anyway, i hope that i could help maybe someone who has the same problem as me, even if your dry eyes is because of something different. Go see an eye-doctor, it's absolutely worth it! Though for my lenses, it was an ophtal eye-doctor. But i don't know if that matters.

      @@DrEyeGuy I was treated for corneal abrasion 3 weeks ago and was given eye ointment. After 4 days I stopped using it because it caused an allergy. I then saw an eye specialist who gave me a full eye examination by dilating my pupils and was told the cornea scratch had heeled nicely and he found no underlying medical health issues. However, he never told me to wear any sun glasses after the examination so that's added to my anxieties. As I stepped out of his office, I was knocked back by how bright it was outside. I have since suffered with light sensitivity but I'm not sure if it's anxiety or not because it's a week ago since he dilated my pupils. I went and had a full eye test and scan on my retina today at my opticians and need reading glasses. The optometrist says my retina is healthy and everything is fine apart from I have dry eye. I'm wondering if this dry eye is the result of pupil dilation. I'm extremely anxious over it.q

My right eye is not dry and perfectly fine. I'm going to call my eye doctor to see what's going on. In the meantime, I'm using an eye drop for my left eye.

    How do I find out what kind of dry eye I have.. the evaporative one or lack of tear production??

    • @DrEyeGuy
      @DrEyeGuy  3 года назад +1

      Amazing question! There are specific tests we can do on a patient to determine what type of dry eye they have. Your eye doctor should be able to help you. Statistically speaking, most people have a combination of both, or fall more in the evaporative form of dry eye. You want to see if you have well functioning oil glands. If your oil glands are great, then you might just have low tear production. This is such a good question that I am going to make a video answering this question.

    I bought a bunch of clear 2oz. bottles. I fill them with water and spray my face. If they are too gritty, I rinse them out with an old fashion eye washer and apply coconut oil. I put the coconut oil on my two fingers after I WASH MY HANDS and that works for a while. I have dry mouth; I chew gum and leave a piece in my mouth while sleeping tucked in the back and that keeps my mouth damp. I have sinus problems and a gland swollen under my tongue. I would think ears, nose, and throat or swollen gland contribute to this problem. Nothing to date has worked and after reading many articles in PubMed. sometimes doctors just can't figure out a complex human body and age well things sometimes go south.

The only thing I can think of is "Axenfeld Loops" They are prominent dark vessels that bring up pigment from the lower layer of the eye, and is harmless... but sometimes look like dark lines on the eye. If it's not then, then I would go get it checked out for sure just to make sure everything is ok.

    I recently went in for my annual eye exam to a new doctor. He asked if I had dry eyes. I said no, at least I don't think they feel dry as they don't bother me and I don't seem to need to rub them. He said he could tell by how the eye drops absorbed into my eye that I do indeed have dry eyes. He recommended that I start taking Refresh Relieva two drops per day. For other reasons, he also recommended that I start taking AREDS 2. As soon as I started the eye drops & AREDS 2, both my eyes and mouth were extremely dry (mouth felt like cotton mouth) AT NIGHT ONLY and it's been that way ever since. I swear it has something to do with either the eye drops or the AREDS 2. It's been a couple weeks and now he tells me to take 4 eye drops a day for 2 weeks. They are still dry. He mentioned something about now that I've been made aware that I have dry eyes, my body is sending a message to my brain that I have dry eyes and now I am experiencing the symptoms of dry eyes.?? Does this make sense? Have you ever known of people to have a reaction to eye drops or AREDS 2?

    • @DrEyeGuy

      A few things can cause this. Sometimes you can get blepharitis or a mild amount of bacteria toxin that builds up in the corner of the eye, it's called angular blepharitis. It could also mean that maybe your right eye could have a tear production problem, or a lipid/oil production problem. Or even something wrong with the puncta/tear drain of that eye. If you have had it for a while, it's probably worth getting it checked by your eye doc.
