  • Visual symptoms and triggers are such a common feature among people who have dizziness that they occur to some extent in almost everyone. In this video, I take a deep dive into why that happens, focusing on people who have chronic dizziness from PPPD, vestibular migraine and other causes. I also give you some exercises to work through to reduce these types of symptoms. As always, stress reduction is the most important part of healing from chronic dizziness! If you don't know how, please check out my free course- it'll walk you through the healing process step-by-step. There is an entire vestibular rehabilitation program example in the course, and you can incorporate some of these vision-specific variations in this video into your plan.

    I have just discovered your content and am blown away - not because I struggle with chronic dizziness myself but my 90-year-old mother is pretty much housebound and chair-ridden because of it. Granted, she has macular degeneration and claims the dizziness got worse as her vision got worse BUT she has complained of vertigo-like symptoms and other chronic symptoms for decades before her AMD blinded her. She has been through every test possible to discover the source of her dizziness and all the MDs keep telling her is how healthy she is! She also suffers from CFS-type symptoms. I don't know if someone her age can accept the mind-body connection concepts, but I'm going to gently introduce her to your content. Can't hurt at this point. She has no quality of life.

      Silvia! Welcome to my channel. I am so frustrated by the lack of information out there, especially for women in perimenopause. This is a huge issue that is being ignored by the mainstream and it is absurd considering the effects that vestibular issues have on people! The good news is, many women in your position have gotten SO much better using these techniques and the free course. Stay tuned for the interview with Kim (coming soon), she went through menopause when these symptoms started.

    I'm about to start your course, before anything I'd like to thank you for taking your time to assist people like me. I'm from a small country called Eswatini and PPPD isn't really known here. I was initially diagnosed with Vestibular Neuritis about 2 years ago and since then I've just never been the same with symptoms changing. The few symptoms I struggle with are sitting positions, some chairs just throw me off, some standing positions like when I stand and lean on something and the worst out of all is after I've driven for like maybe half an hour or more I just feel terrible after that and sometimes even struggle to sleep if I drove for long. I really hope I can get the help I've been searching for, thanks once again.

      I would start with head and eye movement type exercises (I have a whole written course on my website) but starting with still backgrounds on screens, then ones that are not moving but are "busy" (patterns and shapes), then progressing to some of the ones in the video description. My favorite one is the head shake exercises I show in this video because it challenges your whole vestibular system.

    I do wonder if I have visual vertigo, cervical dizziness or a combination of both. I got neck strain/whiplash from breaking up a dog fight and have been healing for several months now. The initial chiropractor I went to caused me severe vertigo in which I got sent to the ER. CT scan was clear. My current chiropractor has helped tremendously with putting a curve back in my neck and fixing my c1 & c2 subluxation. I was experiencing some dizziness on and off throughout, but for the past couple weeks I have had constant dizziness, especially with blue fluorescent and blue LED lights. I feel a head change and get nauseous. Dim lighting makes me dizzy as well, in addition to checkered flooring. Moving my head too fast and looking down causes some dizziness as well, and I'm always tired. I've become pretty depressed and stressed, and some neck muscles are tight including my SCM. Does it sound like a combination of both visual and cervical? Currently waiting to see a doctor, but in the mean time trying to help myself.

    • @TheSteadyCoach
      @TheSteadyCoach  9 месяцев назад +1

      I’m sorry you’re going through this! What you describe is so common among people with NCD that I don’t differentiate between visual vs cervical once medical issues have been addressed- they are both part of neural circuit dizziness. I know you haven’t had all the medical testing done yet but you don’t need to focus on exercises in the meantime. Focus on calming your nervous system.

    I was always very prone to severe motion sickness as a child. When I grow older it got a bit better but still pretty bad. Now as I'm an adult I always have to drive myself or take motion sickness medications. But very often I also get motion sick when I drive myself, much traffic, rainy or foggy weather or driving in the dark is the worst!!! Bit it can happen in normal circumstances too. Sometimes I get it even if I stand next to a big TV, a train, a street... ans other occations...
    It starts with discomfort, headache, dizziness and brain fog and soon goes to nausea, cold sweat, trembling, weakness and worstcase collaps. If it gets this bad I have to lay down and sleep or I don't get rid of the symptoms for hours....it is very disabling in my life.
    I just recently found out on the web search, that it could be a neuro-occular-vestibular dysfunction... I think it is the same you talk about. In my country (swiss) I found nothing about it... no treatment or study.... so I'm excited I found you and maybe your exercises can help me. I recently got diagnosed (at 36yrs) with ADHD.... is it possible that it is related? I mean ADHD is a brain procession dysfunction, right?

      Hello Phillippe, have you already seen my video on cervicogenic dizziness? It doesn’t really cover that question specifically but it does go over how common it is to have neck issues. Soreness and stiffness in the neck can be one of two things- being afraid to move your neck/being a stiff because movement makes you dizzier, OR it can be a chronic pain type condition that is another way stress is being expressed in the body. I will have more videos about this in the future!

    I so appreciate your channel! I've been dealing with dizziness for about 3 years now. I am an albino, therefore legally blind, and have always had nystagmus, but apparently lately that has gotten different. I'm 58 and this is the first time I've ever had disequilibrium issues. So now I'm wondering if the fact that my eyes have changed might be what's causing my vertigo? And if so, is it still possible for me to retrain my brain? Or LOL am I just out of luck? Eye doctor says there is nothing in my eyes that should be causing my nystagmus to be different, so I was thinking that that was happening because of the disequilibrium maybe? Any thoughts? We are fearfully and wonderfully made and it is sometimes difficult to figure out what is causing what. So glad I found your channel!

    • @TheSteadyCoach
      @TheSteadyCoach  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi!!! Wow, this is an interesting question and I appreciate you asking it. It seems like there might be a little more potentially “biological cause” leading to your situation than the average person on my channel, but let me reassure you that eye and vision exercises are almost never needed for people with neural circuit dizziness. Even if the disequilibrium has a biological component, your brain still has to interpret those signals to produce symptoms of dizziness. If there is any contribution of “danger mode,” it’s going to make the symptoms much worse. It would be really good to get vestibular testing done so you know if there is a medical reason for any of it, but there is no harm and only benefit from working on stress and distress to keep your nervous system from freaking out excessively no matter what.

That being said o still have dizziness upon certain head movements, but it seems most of the time it’s in visual rich environments , Costco , Walmart ect … I’ve been cleared of all other diseases. But there’s no doubt a visual aspect to what I’m experiencing. I could literally feel ok then a certain head movement to look at something or I enter a store then boom I feel weird .

Since then I have had trouble consistently with the same issues. Slight dizziness/off balance feeling and a left sided intense headache. They always come together. Been through general vestibular rehab, neck physio, MRI the works. It is triggered sometimes by how I look down at my phone or while on my computer.
    Do you think it can it be possible this is vision related specifically? Im so tired of going through new physios and exercise plans at this stage so wanted to see what you think. Thanks so much

      To me what you're experiencing sounds like neural circuit dizziness that was originally set off by the concussion. It often manifests in vision issues and visual symptoms but not because anything is structurally wrong with the eyes.

    Hi Dr. Yo. We're at our wit's end and about to sign up for your course. Before we do, I'd like to know if you've ever heard of a case where both people in a household get dizziness (that won't go away for the past month) at the same time? We both woke up with it one day and although it wanes (some decent days, some bad days) it won't go away. We've done the MRIs, ENTs, GPs, Physical Therapy (SO MANY EPLEYS) and even had the house checked for environmental factors (it's a new house). All have come up with nothing. We are now doing eye exercises 3X/day. Long question short: Any reason you might know of why two people would get this at the same time? BTW, thank you so much for the work you do. Your bring us (and so many others) a great sense of hope!

    • @TheSteadyCoach

      Hi Rob, wow, so sorry you’re experiencing that. I have seen this a couple times and yes of course my first suspicion is always something environmental or contagious. However I do know a few couples with neural circuit dizziness and I suspect that their nervous systems are impacting each other. Our systems naturally co-regulate so when someone is not regulated, the other person can suffer as well. Again very sorry this is happening. Please take the course!!! It is completely free so there is really nothing to lose.

The other one would be to take a look at what stressors/emotional associations there might be in your home and see if there is anything you can journal about/spend some time processing.

    Thank you. I have been experiencing a balance issue for 3 1/2 years. In Jan of 2020 I went thru a very stressful financial issue with my husband which caused a huge mistrust issue. In a few days I lost hearing in one ear, starting having sight issues, and balance issues. I went to eye Dr, he said nothing is wrong with your eyes..you better see a chiropractor. Did that..he gave me 3 appointments of the epley maneuver. He than said you better go to your general Dr. He explained that I better see a neurologist. I have been to many Dr's since and they all ran tests and said yes there is a problem. I've had 2 MRIs and neck CT scan. All were normal thank god. Still balance issues. Eyes get bad when things are busy, like looking for a certain item on shelf. I have had vertigo off and on with this balance problems. I have been to many specialists with no success. A friend turned me on to your utube sessions and you are hitting the nail on the head. Please help.

    I had several concussions 10-20 years ago, and a bout of BPPV sent my vestibular system into chaos and I developed severe visual vertigo. I didn't realize how messed up my vision had been for years following the concussion since the eye doctor just told me my vision problems were getting older. It's not entirely gone, but it's gotten a lot better with vision therapy. It took a while for a physical therapist to finally connect the dots with my symptoms and realize that my vestibular system had been well out of wack for years. This video makes a lot of sense with what happened to me with the templates, but I really don't like how you blame stress.

    • @TheSteadyCoach

      Hi Terry, glad the explanations made sense to you. Conditions like these are always biopsychosocial. Some people (like you) have very big contributions from biological causes like injuries. Other people do not, and their symptoms are almost entirely psychosocial. Stress is much more nuanced than “I have a stressful job” and I talk about it in many of my other videos. Im glad you’re feeling better!

    My dizziness started in may of this year. I have had all of the awful symptoms that it seems like comes with PPPD. Swaying, feeling like the floor is moving, eye issues, eye floaters, derealization, jaw pain, light sensitivity, panic attacks while driving, etc. I have been watching your videos and I have been really working hard to get over this. I’ve noticed recently that I don’t feel as dizzy anymore but the eye floaters are what really bother me. Are eye floaters very common with PPPD? If so, why is it that people with pppd notice them? I have never noticed eye floaters before this dizziness started. Thank you so much for your videos they have really helped me.

    • @TheSteadyCoach
      @TheSteadyCoach  7 месяцев назад +1

      They are! The brain isn't doing a good job of filtering out the floaters because it's hypersensitive to any info coming in from your eyes. Also when someone is in fight/flight chronically, the body doesn't work quite as efficiently and this can create more floaters.

    I just came across your video and it is so helpful. I have just begun my journey with Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy. I mostly wear contact lenses (Monovision…meaning one lens for reading and one lens for distance). I have done this for over 10 years and my brain adapted and it worked well for me. But now that I am doing this therapy for VOR, I feel it is counterproductive to my healing that each eye is corrected differently for different functions. Do you think it is correct to think this way? I was told not to wear my progressive eyeglasses while performing the exercises so I am doing them with just single distance vision only glasses. Also, do you think that my monovision contacts may have caused my issue to begin with? I just want to be sure I’m performing the exercises while seeing properly and not impair my healing in any way. Thank you for your videos. Very helpful. Hoping to see improvement soon so I can get my life back on track.

    I’m searching for something to overcome nausea and feeling that something is wrong that probably comes from my vision. Do you have any advice?
    An ongoing investigation on my vision has found that I seem to have Dissociated Vertical Deviation (DVD). My eyes seem sometimes to not able to work together and I get subtle vertical, horisontal and torsional drifts when I’m not able to focus vergence or my thoughts drift.
    I’ve dealt with anxiety and a constant gnawing nausea most of my life. It’s not intense dizziness enough to knock you of your feet but the main impact is that everything feels off and wrong all the time.
    It is like the nausea and some kind of warning signal desperately attaches it self to my actions and situations around me even when I know there is nothing wrong. Leading to anxiety problems and depression. Since it is there all the time I don’t know when its my eyes and when it is my brain that is doing this. Living with it for probably all 35 years have probably made one indistinguishable from the other.
    It’s looking like I won’t be able to fix this vision problem so I’m searching for some hope for rehabilitation on making me handle it better.

      I am so sorry to hear about this very long road you have been on. Those kinds of visual symptoms sound very much like what my clients experience. From my experience, the eyes are following the brain's lead. It doesn't mean there is something wrong with your eyes. When the problem is functional (aka not structural, it's in the way the sense behaves), the problem is usually feedback from the brain. Please consider watching some of the other videos on my channel, especially Why exercise isn't fixing your dizziness! ruclips.net/video/N-kGca0gNGo/видео.html

      Hi L, sometimes that happens because the lenses are rounded, which means your brain has to do some work to adjust/smooth out the picture. When your brain isn't doing a great job of filtering visual information, adding another thing to process can make things worse.

    Dear Dr. Yo
    It is true, like you said... my simptoms are moving around: i do not feel that much body dizzynest anymore, but my eyes are just making me dizzy... lights, clouds, strong sun, supermarkets, carpets, tv, phone.. this all make me dizzy and i feel like in the end of a day my eyes hurts- and i really need 8 hours of sleep to get my eyes relaxed. It is hard.,couse when i feel like my eyes are just in so much strees, my head is a like a balon, like i have a water botlle in a head moving left to right... it is a scary feeling... but when i am for exmaple dancing (case i love to dance), and swiming or i am on a bike., my eyes are perfectly normal. Pleasw help with your opinion
    Thanks

      It is normal for symptoms to switch around. The less fear and concern you react with, the more quickly it will pass.

    Great video but what causes a visual brain dysfunction in the first place is it in inflammatory issue or a structural issue or a post concussion issue?

    • @TheSteadyCoach

      Hi Monica, it is a result of a brain prediction error that is not structural. I discuss more in detail in this video ruclips.net/video/ZyN1iwLkM-I/видео.html

    I have nystagmus especially when I bend my head over as to read or write or bend over to retrieve something from the floor. The words on a page begin to scroll upwards and makes it impossible to read. It takes my eyes a few moments to settle, in the meantime, I am very much off balance. When I walk, without even bending my head, I begin to feel like I'm on a boat rocking in the waves. I have taken a few falls. I am 75 years young and this has become a real problem and hinders me from living and enjoying my life. Been to MANY doctors and done the VNG testing. Not a problem in my ears. I have neck stiffness and occasionally migraines also insomnia. Any thoughts or insights would be helpful. I have become depressed with all of this. Thank you.

      Marilynn, this sounds like neural circuit dizziness. All of the videos here describe how to address it. This might be a good one to watch: ruclips.net/video/4QDFGvHGURc/видео.html

    Hey Angel Doc!! I have been dealing with what I thought was Hashimoto’s symptoms for the last four years and then it got really bad with the dizziness and was walking on marshmallows, always felt like I’m swaying and with just the depersonalization and derealization, feeling like I’m in another world, cognitive issues so bad and I can not drive or even go into a store 🏬 for 15 minutes until I’m in a full blown panic attack because the visual vertigo came on due to all of the patterns and lights and open space. I have been pretty much stuck in my house for the last two years of my life and things have just gotten so bad to where I just look forward to going to sleep every night throughout the day and that’s pretty bad. This all has caused me so much mental distress and anxiety to where I have become not well. I have a therapist that I meet with virtually once every other week, and I see a neurologist for my vestibular migraines. She has not said it is anything else, but vestibular migraines. And I know that it is visual vertigo and my physical therapist agreed. I have done so much research in the last two years I have become an extremely health, anxiety ridden person. I learned about PPPD and I was the one that brought it up to my primary doctor as well as my neurologist and my primary doctor knew about it but the neurologist knew nothing about it and so I bought her a book so she could read about it. I really feel in my heart that I have this, but then I learned about visual vertigo and neural circuit dizziness through you and this just makes so much sense to me everything that I have gone through in the past six years, and even during my childhood has affected my life greatly, and the stress and anxiety, and the constant worry has really took a toll on my brain and my entire life!! I do apologize because I am in a brain fog episode so if I am all over the place, I do apologize and I am using talk to text because of the screen and the brightness. Screens affect me greatly. I was wanting to let you know that I have a Social Security disability hearing next week and I’m so nervous what to even say to the judge about my condition because it basically is that I have vestibular migraines, major depressive disorder/bipolar, panic/anxiety disorder, PTSD. I see a neurologist and I see a therapist and I also see a counselor and this is been going on for one year now since I have been seeing these doctors. My family doctor just told me that I really needed to see a therapist for cognitive behavioral therapy and she was so right!! my symptoms are so bad that I obsess about them 24 seven and I Google them and it really is so toxic for me and I’ve recently stopped googling my symptoms because I’ve been watching your videos. My question is how many of your patients or of your viewers, or on SSDI for what I have explained? I am very nervous coming July 7, because that is my hearing. I just am afraid to sound like an idiot and I stumble over my words because of all of the brain fog and the out of body experience that I feel when I get extremely stressed and anxious I’m afraid I’m going to mess up and he’s going to think that I am faking it or something, I’m just terrified and if you could just say a prayer for me or send some good vibes out to the universe for me to receive I’d really appreciate it. Going to a Social Security disability hearing with not quite an understanding of the diagnoses is that we are going for. Visual vertigo is going to be considered some thing. I’m sure they have never heard of when I go to court and see the judge and I’m terrified that this is going to ruin my case. Any advice? I have been following you now for a couple months, and I got my aunt to join your channel as well because she suffers with similar vestibular issues greatly. You are an angel, and I do believe in my heart and soul that you were put here on this earth to heal. You are an angel and you have touched my heart so much and have made it easy for me to just cry, while listening to your somatic sounds and just let everything out of my body so I can be free from my brain. You have helped me so much. Thank you from all of my heart. Oh, and I just purchased your vestibular journal on Amazon the other week I forgot to tell you. I will be starting that as soon as the hearing is over because I have been extremely overwhelmed with trying to prepare for this anyway, I’m sorry for rambling on. Talk to text can be a good thing, but it can be a bad thing for other people and I’m sorry.

      I've been dealing with this same awful swaying, spaced out feeling and computer screens really makes it worse. I was also diagnosed with Hashimotos three years ago and have felt that has something to do with these balance attacks, but haven't found any real answers. I'm commenting because I was struck with how similar your symptoms are to mine, although I haven't had it last as long and intense like yours, yet! I'm worried I will get stuck like this. :( I sincerely hope your Social Security Disability court day went well, it's so hard to explain how difficult living like this is to people who haven't experienced it. Hi, I recently got married and through out the courtship period with so many things changing in life and too much travel etc, I have felt mild dizziness all the time, not the spinning kind but an uncomfortable feeling of movement within the body. Also what you have described as marshmallow walking in one of the videos happens on and off to me, more so when I'm sleep deprived or when I am in malls or big showrooms. I've also noticed that sometimes when I eat something (nothing specific) I feel lightheaded or like I'm about to pass out for about like 8-10 seconds and then get normal again which generally happens when I'm already fearing too much that this symptoms might happen when I will take the bite. How do I control it? Please help.

      Hi there, first step is to have a medical work up to make sure there is no physical cause, after that, take the course, it is free and explains this from top to bottom. thesteadycoach.com/free-course

      Hi Ella, so on one hand yes, exposure to the things that make you fearful is a good thing. However, my view is we should always be taking a bigger picture view of why the symptoms are there in the first place. I talk about how I approach this in my free course if you have not taken it yet. It is 100% free and integrates many of the ideas I talk about on my channel. members.thesteadycoach.com just scroll down

    After 6 years of lightheadednes, and absolutely no medical Drs would even try to comment on this let alone look for any issues as to why. It was a concussion in late 2016 that caused this. I have narrowed it down to depth perception. Focusing on something far away then something close up. Just normal activities, in the back yard or walking. Looking around. Then it will hit a limit and I get lightheaded. But I haven’t found how to relax or stop that. Usually it will be the next morning after sleeping.
