There's definitely a HUGE difference in having painful and unexpected cuts on your eye during a fight. Opposed to not having a working eye for years and being able go through training camps and adjusting the best you can to having one eye. I'm not saying it's easy. But it's drastically different from an eye gouge during a fight. Ever had your eyes badly scratched? I have. More than once. You can't physically keep your eyes open. You have to hold them open. It's a different thing. You people bitching about Stephen's are just ignorant.

I have a glass eye. I lost it to cancer when I was 2 years old.
I was an athlete my whole life, and I never really thought much about it other than if I was playing something that was sort of projectile based like racquetball, and in that case I would wear those recspec safety goggle type things. And then once I made it into my twenties I spent 6 years fighting, more than your average person. I was a bouncer in a few large, high-volume College bars. And as a result of course you get into a handful of fights, especially with the testosterone flowing in the crowd of young Collegiate age males who are on the hunt for women, who have various loyalties to their groups, sports teams, fraternities, Etc. I was probably involved in 150 fights in a seven-year stretch. And I can I assure you that, it can be done at a high level. But at the same time it certainly does increase the mistakes. For example, I took an unnecessary number of shots to my Blindside including bottles to the head, because you just didn't see them coming. But I certainly held my own, and was able to make it through all of them without incurring further damage to my eye.
I can attest to just how amazing it is did he competed at a high level with only one eye. It certainly can be done however it doesn't change the fact that he now has a huge blind spot. There's no way around it oh, you just can't see things coming out of your peripheral to that side. It's a fact, there's nothing you can do to mitigate it, other than doing the kind of things that would make you an even better fighter like compensating by increasing your footwork and that kind of thing, focusing your boxing on head movement, Etc. But it is a fact, that you just can't see things coming when they come from that blind spot.

What makes bisping a bit different to you is he lost his eye mid career then won a world title, you grew up with only sight from one side so would be more natural to you to learn fighting.
Not taking anything away from you mate I can totally see a one eyed man doing well in all sorts of sports just bispings case is slightly different
@@jonathanlewis867 there's certainly something to be said for that. Are we all assuming that Bisping lost his eye after the Belfort fight, and then started fighting shortly thereafter? I'm asking because, as somebody who is taking it I in and out for years and has been around the technology of not only aesthetically decorating the prosthesis, I've been involved in the world of molding and making and I've been around many many many single eyed Folk, LOL. And Bisping had the look of somebody who had a glass eye his entire life. He took it in and out as if it was old hat. He has and eye socket structure that looks as if it's been there forever.
So part of me wants to say that he's had it forever, lol. But assuming he got it when we think he may have, and then somehow managed to heal up that socket that fast and lie to the doctors with not much practice at doing so Etc. If we assume that, then the amount of time that he had to live with that thing to get used to it definitely makes his story pretty impressive. Because you're right, I grew up with it and had made those adjustments part of just my everyday second nature. And I wonder as an adult how long that process might take now.
@@markbeebe125 very early bisping his eyes looked fine, can't say it was definitely the trt Vitor fight that lost him his eye but the reaction to him says it all to me 😂, maybe he always had some issues with the eye and that kick was the last straw and cost him it, so he may have had years and years getting used to slowly losing sight which would make the impact of losing it a bit easier.
Until bisping gives us the full true story we'll never truly know

But seriously, big respect to Bisping. I was at UFC London when he fought Silva and got full knee to the face and everyone thought the fight had been stopped when it hadn't and Bisping shook off the stars and won the fight. Very tough warrior.
