Such a beautiful song, a priceless era gone, past, never coming back. I look at today society and it just is so sad. For me, the 70s that I grew up in it was an amazing time in history. I looked back at the richness of that era today and I feel blessed to have those memories
His music reminds me of my dear friends I had growing up; going to local parties, places, laughing, doing silly things while adulthood stretched out before us. None of us knew these fun, simple times would make such warm memories. Young people are open-minded and inclusive; we watched our friends do their own thing, and loved them regardless and they, us.

As soon as they're gone I go back to my Classic Rock from the 70's. The best decade in music and will always listen to it.
I'm 73 living outside of Birmingham UK and this song makes me smile because of the girls I lost my mates came first !! Stupid !!!!!! But we had great times. It's great to have life love friends and memories. God Bless America Thanks John!!!!!
Art can touch people in powerful ways. This Artist and this song did that for me when I was a young Black kid living in small town America. It reaffirmed my desires and goals.
@John Mellencamp John cared enough to share his feelings on society way back in the 1980s, and that message really mattered to a lot of people but was especially powerful to the African American community. It was uplifting.
I dated a girl for 4 years, lived in many different places together, each home we’d turn this on and dance around the house together. Even though we’re on different paths in life now, it’s one of my favourite memories, I’ll always love you B.
This song I believe is John Mellencamp's greatest song. It has a power that moves me to dance and moves me to tears in equal spades. It really is one of the most gorgeous songs of the 80s from a wonderful artist who was so inclusive of all races back when it wasn't so hip
Not only is his music timeless..I hear he's a real down to earth man..still living in his small town in Indiana..I believe..heard stories from friends on how he would go to the neighborhood McDonald's and just be in town..respect to him and the people who just let him live..I guess that's why Prince never left Minneapolis..I heard he did the same..to all my 80s babies..ROCK ON!!..real music sees no color..salute..
Whoever said “Classics never die” Cougar for sure! But also the man who introduced me to this music. Steven Smith he was a best friend for so many years, then I fell in love with this crazy man. He was a classic to he passed away September a couple years back. And I miss him daily I guess I listen to this when I want to remember the crazyness that I would not have had any other way. So this goes out to you Steven Smith “1969” with so much love from me and Crimpton who both miss you so much. I wish you were here beside me again!
Mellencamp's best album by far along with Scarecrow. I played this song at my wedding for all my 200 friends to dance to! AND WE DID.......SUPERB SONG JOHN.....THANK YOU PAL!!

17 turns 51 dam i miss the days of my Youth setting joking with MY friends and listening for Cougar on the weekly countdown with Dick Clark Thinking about goin out the Lane to have a little fun. Thanks for the memories John!!!
Let me tell you what a great guy John Mellencamp is. I went to his concert here in my town last April. I took my autistic son with me because he loves JM as much as I do. My poor son started to have a meltdown during the first song. He was just too overstimulated. I had to leave and don't know how John M knew about it but a few weeks later he sent me his new album, his catalog of art and a nice note. What a beautiful soul he has. You can see the note on my utube page. John will always be loved. That's why we're all here.
Klove 5343 What a great story. John seems like a real down to earth man from the Midwest. ❤️ I am sorry to hear you couldn't stay, I hope your son is doing well. I am looking for the note from John on your YT channel, where do I find it? Thank you. I see videos of man made chemical clouds, fires that DEW's direct energy weapons started. I hope you are safe.
Love the second stanza, where she says, "the winter days they last forever" and then John answers with "but the weekends went by so quick" with the great sounding drums and bass in the background, soon to be joined by the fiddle. Sounds so good.
How this is not on the streaming music services is crazy!!! Wonderful song of coming of age. On, such great memories for a gentler time. Now that I am way past that age, I still love this song. The backup singers are great as are the lyrics; listen closely. So sweet. Turn it up!
My brothers and sisters around the world seeing you reach out to each other has brought tears to my eyes.oh how wonderful our world could be if every human being could feel the way you feel.
John I was in Sonoma California when you came through Sky Blue Studios 128 4th Street. You were talking about changing your name to John Cougar. I remember helping you load your equipment into a old pickup truck. Roy Buchanan and Bob Johnston came through the studio shortly after you. Bruce Springsteen and the boys came in after you. Bruce got songs from me and didn't pay. He promised to pay if he used them depending on how good they were. They were hits he hasn't paid me one red cent. Congratulations on your success.
I hear you Jeff...I grew up on a farm in Illinois a small town at that time maybe about 8000 this song sooooo describes my life growing up I listened to John Cougar and his song Small town and I'm still in that town I grew up in and it's not so small anymore...population about 18,000 or more and I love John Cougar so many many memories I have all his ALBUMS and some of his CDS I know he dropped the Cougar part but he will always be John Cougar Mellencamp to me.Thank you again!!!
Hadn't heard this song for a while, but that line often passes through my head. There's something so Christian about it: "Me with my big mouth. A couple guys had to put me in my place. When l see those guys these days . ." Beautiful lyrics. Stay humble. Love the Lord. Accept your penance. Reconcile.
John is such a great story teller.. he brings to life, days gone by. i love that he ended up with Meg Ryan. they're a great couple. Hearts are both suited for each other. :)
i guess our generation will look back at the 80's the way our parents looked at the 50's & 60's in 2019 you start to realize that a simpler time was a better time
No you will just think it was. Just like the kids of today will look at the 2020's with nostalgia. It's the time when you were a kid regardless iof when it was and what was happening in the world at large.
oh sweet girl I wish I believed that. But I fear my grandchildren and all children of these times will look back at dreadful changes and unprecedented suffering globally . And I can’t think of any music today that is uplifting the youth -the kind of music that gives hope, common vision and unity of hearts . What music will they feel united them when young in 2021? Sorry to be such a downer, and bless you for such hopeful thoughts anyway! 🙏💞🌟☮️
@@francie2915 Don't start with me. People are nostalgic for the early 2000's, 9/11 notwithstanding. I don't think anyone would have though people would be nostalgic for three Great Depression either.
This is like one of my favorite music videos and John Mellencamp songs, his music is just amazing! It’s songs and times like those that you never want to leave...💜💎
I was 20yrs old when this song came out.. and had just started driving truck for a living.. and this song used to be in rotation on so many radio stations. This song kept me groovin' on the long empty road many times.. and it was my first real introduction to JCM.. I mean.. I had heard the songs Jack & Diane and Hurt so Good.. but I didnt know anything about this guy JCM as I grew up listening to mostly Reggae.. R&B.. Funk.. Disco.. and Rap music.. and as a Black man I didnt really listen to a whole lot of white artists.. Phil Collins.. Eric Clapton.. Hall & Oates.. and maybe a few others.. but this song made me become a real fan of JCM!
Boy John Cougar Mellencamp, what a Storyteller Oso. He paints a picture with his lyrics like a artist paints a painting with his brush there's only a few artists that can do this and he is definitely one of them. What memories come to mind when you listen to songs like these it almost close your eyes and go back in time to the good old days when songs meant something, told stories of people's realize thank you John Cougar Mellencamp.
I adore John, always have. I have lived The Authority Song me entire life, but this is my favourite among so many favourites. He is an artist worthy of RESPECT and ADMIRATION.
Love his home-movie style videos. Growing up in America was wonderful, great memories, didn't realize how good we had it. People were much more in tune with each other and had more in common. Kinder too. I miss that. Think I appreciate it more now that 17 has turned 35 : )
This song literally makes me, a 63 year old man, grew up in Indiana, cry. It’s my past life. I lived it. It’s gone. Only in memories.
All good memories I hope🇺🇲✌️
I also grew up in southern Indiana, I'm almost 60..

This is a great great song. 70 years old now. May God bless him with many more years to grace us with his talent.
Nobody had the pulse of middle America in their music like John! Everytime I hear one of his song's, I think of growing up on my grandparents farm.
LOVE THIS SONG, and the old home 8mm movie clips mixed in is a trip down memory lane. Rock On, JM !!
John is Indiana thru and thru, nostalgic tunes still brings tears to my eyes
I've never been to Indiana but all the people I've met from there are good solid hard working people
ddr
Is he though? His political views don't align with most Indianans, and I mean that as a compliment to John.
@@philliesfan1971 he's Indiana as fuck, all politics aside.
@@philliesfan1971 What's an Indianan? We're Hoosiers!
As I grow older I appreciate this song and video more. Life keeps rolling
Saw him play at the Bluebird, Bloomington, back in the day…before he got famous. Good times! 2:34
One of the most important musical artists of our time and he doesn't receive enough recognition.
My friend went to school with him 😊
Those 80's albums still sound great. John's body of work is truly outstanding.
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG 🎵 Luv his dancing, GOD BLESS 🙏 Really cool video filmed on the beach,
@Greg Normal Happy Thanksgiving, YES, I am a big fan😉 Have a Blsd Day 🙏
I've been listening to Mellencamp for over 40 years. I'll keep listening until the end of my life. I love him and his awesome music.
Great song. Feel good music. Never get tired of John Mellancamp music. A song for the ages!
John's best tune.
This... is my favorite all time songs!! Hope to see you in Spokane,WA Aug 8 this year!!❤
I dated a girl for 4 years, lived in many different places together, each home we’d turn this on and dance around the house together. Even though we’re on different paths in life now, it’s one of my favourite memories, I’ll always love you B.
What a grown-up way to tell us how much you care for the lady that was once a part of life. Good on you, my friend.
This song I believe is John Mellencamp's greatest song. It has a power that moves me to dance and moves me to tears in equal spades. It really is one of the most gorgeous songs of the 80s from a wonderful artist who was so inclusive of all races back when it wasn't so hip
This is THE best mellencamp song in my opinion -brings tears every time I hear it.I grew up in the 80s not the 50s, but I TOTALLY get it; THANKS JOHN!
another great song one you can look back in time at old friends holding hands was something big then wow that tears me up at 61 where did the time go
"That's when a smoke was a smoke......and groovin' was groovin'"
God Mellencamp was freaking talented
It's actually *When a SPORT was a SPORT. 👍
@@WooBino. That doesn't make any sense at all.... what does that mean?
@@Dippydoo21 Look up the lyric, I had the cassette.
You'd have to ask John what it means.
This song is a masterclass in folk-rock
Not only is his music timeless..I hear he's a real down to earth man..still living in his small town in Indiana..I believe..heard stories from friends on how he would go to the neighborhood McDonald's and just be in town..respect to him and the people who just let him live..I guess that's why Prince never left Minneapolis..I heard he did the same..to all my 80s babies..ROCK ON!!..real music sees no color..salute..
Yep. From Muncie Indiana. Same place Bob Ross painted happy things
seriously? sees no color? its literally marketed based on age and race onto radio stations that do the same
@@parkjamesshaw3189 Seymour, Indiana. He lives in Bloomington now.
@@joeruiz4010 I stand corrected
Whoever said “Classics never die” Cougar for sure! But also the man who introduced me to this music. Steven Smith he was a best friend for so many years, then I fell in love with this crazy man. He was a classic to he passed away September a couple years back. And I miss him daily I guess I listen to this when I want to remember the crazyness that I would not have had any other way. So this goes out to you Steven Smith “1969” with so much love from me and Crimpton who both miss you so much. I wish you were here beside me again!
Went to a couple of his concerts back when this song and Paper in fire came out! Had a great time!
This is my moms favorite song n will always remind me of her. 💜
God bless you Tracy. Wer here for you
HUGS
Mellencamp's best album by far along with Scarecrow. I played this song at my wedding for all my 200 friends to dance to! AND WE DID.......SUPERB SONG JOHN.....THANK YOU PAL!!
33 here and my father showed me mellencamp along with countless others. This particular song reminds me of summertime cookouts with family playing horseshoes and volleyball. Meanwhile, I was happy to have my soda poolside.
What a song.John you are special you just had a unique way with your songs. thank you for this one!! Love it the 80's the best
Woke up at 4:30am with this song in my head. Don’t know how long it’s been since I’ve listened to it. Still good after all these years
Every day i wake up, i wake to a different song in my head. Never fails.
1986, single, and the girls loved to dance to this tune. I HAD HAIR !!! Now in 2024, in my 70s and married to a wonderful lady that danced with me.
You're very lucky. I'm in my 70s,but my love &dance partner isn't in this world anymore- it's been 20 years-- I dance by myself and REMEMBER THE GOOD TIMES! Thank heaven for musiç😊r
One of my top best songs ever!
Reminds me of the 60’s and 70’s
When people had morals respect and true fun!
17 turns 51 dam i miss the days of my Youth setting joking with MY friends and listening for Cougar on the weekly countdown with Dick Clark
Thinking about goin out the Lane to have a little fun.

What a great story.
John seems like a real down to earth man from the Midwest. ❤️
I am sorry to hear you couldn't stay, I hope your son is doing well.
What a
Awesome

Saw him in concert in Perth Australia in 1988 absolutely brilliant one of the best I've ever been to!!!!💯💯😀😀
Hadn't heard this song for a while, but that line often passes through my head. There's something so Christian about it:
"Me with my big mouth. A couple guys had to put me in my place. When l see those guys these days . ."
Beautiful lyrics. Stay humble. Love the Lord. Accept your penance. Reconcile.
This song makes me happy no matter what I'm going thru as soon as I play it
Hello Holly
John is such a great story teller.. he brings to life, days gone by. i love that he ended up with Meg Ryan. they're a great couple. Hearts are both suited for each other. :)
i guess our generation will look back at the 80's the way our parents looked at the 50's & 60's in 2019 you start to realize that a simpler time was a better time
Some video clip pieces here looked to me like the '50s & '60s of which I could relate.
Hell, we’re starting to look at the 90’s under the same lens
One of my most favorite all time songs. I love this song. Brings many memories. Thank you JMC
Loved your comment
John shares all his SOULFULNESS in his songs, he makes sure the flow goes straight to our hearts...We feel it John!!🎤❤️❤️❤️
Great musics does anyone still listen to Mellencamp anymore
Boy John Cougar Mellencamp, what a Storyteller Oso. He paints a picture with his lyrics like a artist paints a painting with his brush there's only a few artists that can do this and he is definitely one of them. What memories come to mind when you listen to songs like these it almost close your eyes and go back in time to the good old days when songs meant something, told stories of people's realize thank you John Cougar Mellencamp.
John Mellencamp is a true artist! He's so under rated I've grew up on this music It plays to ur heart,I love John melkencamp
Great Song, and John has worked hard to be where he is ..... How can any body say Negative comments or thumb down has a Screw Loose
@John Mellencamp Keep Painting, riding your Bike, enjoy your family
I love listening to this with my dad and I miss him all the time. 😢❤
