This video is one of the most fantastic things I have ever seen. Between how young he looks the pink tuxes the cheesy dance moves the fake sax solo and the crowd that obviously has no idea who he is. It’s 4:40 seconds of musical perfection.
Great performance. I cannot imagine how many times the choreographer had to make his band mates practice both to keep from laughing at themselves and to somewhat synchronize their moves. Gritty real voice of Johnny Cougar. He did stumble on some words but recovered in stride.
My very first memory of John Mellencamp was seeing him do this song on American Bandstand, along with the Motown-like choreography. Of course, his management at the time had him using that stupid Johnny Cougar moniker. I've been a fan ever since! So many great tunes, so many great shows! Never went with the tide, never sold out to the latest style or genre. Stayed true to himself and his music!
Thanks to all the artists who can put to music the emotions teenagers feel. This includes old people remembering the past when songs like this are recommended .
Johnny Cougar takes me back to my teenage years in the 80s! I showed Pops the liner notes to Scarecrow when he was blasting my teenage music and so forth.. He understood.. that was cool and He got it.. very cool... Thank you John for writing music that matters... Tim S. I remember the farm aid days.. My Grampa farmed til he was 90 He retired and dropped dead one month later. He loved what he did..
Hello, I am so anxious to say many GREAT things about this Video and this Man. I was happily born in 1971 and I fell in love with this Man the very first time I saw him, He was a Stunningly Beautiful Man, Really. Back doing that time Men were Men they carried their own originality. Which in it self was SEXY. And this is what this Video entails (Being Unique). John has always been a Mans Man. He has stood up and spoke on behalf of the small Farmers as well as blue collar workers such as myself. He has gifted this world with so much of his music it's just breath taking. I love this Song and its entirety. Pink looks GREAT on this Man, ( Yes he is Real Pretty in PINK.) Today in 2016 I don't even watch regular Television nothing to look at or watch. When I was growing up there was so many Great LOOKING Men on T.V. it was like drinking a glass of water. We really did take that for GRANTED. But now these days very very very little Men of those looks Grace the Silver Screen. I guess for me I thought we would always have those type Men around, not a Chance these days. So in Ending my love letter I would like to point out even back then he puts MOST Hollywood men to Shame the Blacks and the Whites in this ERA. And this is coming from a BLACK STALLION.
John is a very good dancer. Saw him in Bloomington Indiana (He lives in Bloomington). During the concert he jumped up & went down into a full splits. He not only writes songs and sings but he can also cut a rug.
Can't dance, lol? He's a fantastic dancer with a very unique style. You need to go watch it again with an open mind. His background dancers were the bomb as well.
John is a legend. The Elvis of his day. Still great and makes me feel great to be this old and know, we did not have Justin Beibers, We had John Mellancamp. And I am ok with that.
Darrin Ros it was great back then.I was maybe 16 and had a mustang..A real horse.I grew up rural ranch life but had a radio.Had to buy D cell batteries for it but it kept me in tune with outside world.
Such a talent - as a singer, songwriter and painter. Have been following him since I was a teenager (57 now) and with the number of albums he has released, I can’t think of a single song that I could say I didn’t like.
Wow John. I remember helping you load your equipment out of Sky Blue Studio in Sonoma California into the back of a pickup truck with Indiana plates. I'm glad your dreams came true. Take care and be well.
Ah, I still love this tune. I bought the album after hearing him perform this tune on American Bandstand. I was a fledgling bassist when it came out, but I thought the bassline was so cool, I sat down and learned it. It was one of the first tunes I learned by ear. I still love playing this bassline. Simple, but catchy AF.
I actually remember being able to run around all night. When social media was a bon fire after the date where u meet on the levee get big fire going turn radio up and all ur friends talked til day light
Seems kinda weird to think of now huh. No cell phones. Told our parents we would call at certain times - cruising , bonfires : racing to a pay phone to check in. Making up BS on why u were late to call. Lol. Maybe trying to act sober on the call. Loved them 80’s. No shootings - boys fought till someone broke it up. Learned to be a man. Didn’t have twitter telling u how to think - or how toxic your masculinity was. Lol.
Nostalgia has died. Not sure what kind of memories this tech generation will have 40 years from now when they look back. Not sure they will have any real ones.
I remember my girlfriend at the time saying "I heard this song on the radio that I just love. I don't know the artist or the title but it talks about "hands in my back pockets". Sounds so quaint now, that we had no way of finding anything about a song until you heard it announced on the radio.
the guys behind mellencamp are not dancers, it's his friggin band at the time. This came straight from the original video for this tune, it was meant to be campy. Besides, you gotta love his Mitch Ryder sweater and shirt.
I was in my teens when Cougar did his dance here. It was awkward as fuck even by 80’s standards. He improved and donned that Jean jacket and I tell you what that sum bitch owned music for a while!
It HAD to be the 80's! Where else you gonna see "Johnny Cougar" looking like he's in High School, and flanked by a half dozen guys in PINK tuxedos?? Strange video, indeed, but The Kid had it, way back then. Great moves, Sir Mellencamp. One of the last of the true rockers.
This was my theme song for one of the most amazing nights of my life. It was 1981. I was on the road. I stopped at the Redondo Beach Pier to watch the sunset, and met an amazing girl. The rest, as they say is history.

This video is one of the most fantastic things I have ever seen. Between how young he looks the pink tuxes the cheesy dance moves the fake sax solo and the crowd that obviously has no idea who he is. It’s 4:40 seconds of musical perfection.
😳
LOL, and what's up with the ONE guy wearing a Hat?
The one guy in the black hat is that Maurice Gibb ?
Not to mention the James Brown schtick at the end.
Fell in love with hus music after watching this in 1981. Thank you Mr. Mellencamp!
Great performance. I cannot imagine how many times the choreographer had to make his band mates practice both to keep from laughing at themselves and to somewhat synchronize their moves. Gritty real voice of Johnny Cougar. He did stumble on some words but recovered in stride.
Excellent, start to finish, and they were enjoying every note. Almost performance art.
Is that his backup band? I always assumed they were just dancers brought in for the show. Actually, they're not bad as dancers too.
He DID stumble, but recovered gracefully.
Much rather see that than a lip-sync...any day of the week!
Yeah but that's a great reminder that he sang it live, and not a lip sync!
Lip sync is hideous...don't know why it's ever a thing.
Oh the memories.Thanks John!
We did not know how good we had it look at the mess we're in now miss the 70s and 80s
😎👍 Good Music and Good Times ahead. Peace to all. ❤🤍💙
Blame Media, social media and computers. Oh wait, and politicians
Great song I've always enjoyed listening to John Mellencamp and always will.
The backup dancers are all I can watch. Amazing. It’s like my 6yo daughter picked the clothes and choreography.
reminds me of hot for teacher video by van halen
Your daughter must have impeccable taste!
That was his band. On the liner notes of the LP they were called "The Zone".
Emma Sedaris---- The 80's were a different time and different people. You wouldn't understand.
if that's all you can watch then they did their job right
My very first memory of John Mellencamp was seeing him do this song on American Bandstand, along with the Motown-like choreography. Of course, his management at the time had him using that stupid Johnny Cougar moniker.
I've been a fan ever since! So many great tunes, so many great shows! Never went with the tide, never sold out to the latest style or genre. Stayed true to himself and his music!
One of his best songs. The guys in the back look like they're going to the Pepto Bismol prom or something!
lol!!!!
You got a big fan in Debbie Willard. I bet you like that who wouldn't? Especially from Debbie... I am jealous
Those are the band members. Organizers made John use the house band....he refused to not include them
@@rcourt879 yes, I know that is John's band
I loved how they did this... Great I remember watching it on TV 😁
John is one of the best! Thanks for all the great year’s of music John! Ready for more!
I remembered seeing this live and had to search for it. It's as great now as it was then. Thanks for sharing this.
Please take me back to 1981 !! I love this song and anything by John Mellencamp. I was just 16 then. The 80s was an amazing decade!
And this is coming from a BLACK STALLION.
well said lisa...
+MrMikeaxemurderer Thank You, at least Someone Still Understands the Man"s Man Syndrome.
will alright
will alright
will alright
Love John cougar! Let the haters hate! It's what they do
Wendell Russell Fuck them!!!
I Love John's music too!!! 70's and 80's
love this song brings me back to the 80's where I had some of the best memories....
Grace. P Franco 💯👍
Rick Springfield was up there too!
Still finding old gems like this one ❤️ "and I even done with the night!" Can't wait to use this line 😉
John (I cant dance) Cougar. Loved the 80’s wish I could relive it all.
John is a very good dancer. Saw him in Bloomington Indiana (He lives in Bloomington). During the concert he jumped up & went down into a full splits. He not only writes songs and sings but he can also cut a rug.
Omg 😃😃 he was a horrible dancer 😭🤣🤣 which was a shame, but made him more sexy
@@janaskibo871 I think he can dance. I was surprised
Can't dance, lol? He's a fantastic dancer with a very unique style. You need to go watch it again with an open mind. His background dancers were the bomb as well.
@@janaskibo871 Haydur. Give it another chance. 💜
John is a legend. The Elvis of his day. Still great and makes me feel great to be this old and know, we did not have Justin Beibers, We had John Mellancamp. And I am ok with that.
Elvis of his day hardly but that being said regaurdless of the video a great song
Happy to have grown up in the 80's when people actually played instruments.
Can we not have Biebers and Mellencamp both?
Darrin Ros Elvis?? Phhhfffft
Darrin Ros it was great back then.I was maybe 16 and had a mustang..A real horse.I grew up rural ranch life but had a radio.Had to buy D cell batteries for it but it kept me in tune with outside world.
This is the best John Cougar song !!
Agreed
Ditto
I think "I Need A Lover" is fantastic but this one's my favorite.
The song is awesome, I do not get the dudes in pink!? What did I miss,!?
Nah. You need to check out his John cougar self titled lp and nothin matters and what if it did lp. Those tunes are way better
Awesome How John Almost Rolled His Ankle Jumping From The Stage But Like A True Professional He Continues The Song! 👍🏻
great song, this came out before Hurts so good, and still this song is one of my alltime favorites
Great Song 😍
Good tune, but Small Paradise made me a fan instantly. What a classic song. He never forgot where he came from either, how could u not b a fan?
Well our hearts beat like thunder I don't know why they don't explode........ . what a line. Love it
Ain't that the truth!
Yes, now days unfortunately its like are hearts beat like a murmur.. I don’t know why they don’t implode.😂
I like the old John, even though his hits were 40 years ago
Terrific video of a young John . I like it very interesting and fun. Thanks for posting
Some of the best times of our life were with John Couger Mellencamp singing in the background! Priceless!!😎
This is a great song never get tired of hearing it
A lot of JCM's songs were the soundtrack for our lives in the 80s.
John had that 50’s swag cranked up to 10. I love this song.
Wow! Heard the song many times, just never got to see this! Hmm the cool hottie of the 80's💕👍
Your's are beautiful as you look, Thank's for your sincere compliment, I would always give appreciation to my dedicated fan like you
🎻🌹🎻🌹🎻🌹
Man ! Beenninto john cougar since jack and Diane but I never heard this song and I have his greatest hits songs. Super duper song.
My goodness He is absolutely gorgeous in this video...
amcqueenboxing
Damn u aint seen me yet lol lmao!$!
You look damn good yourself
He is, we all get older, but he sure didn’t age well. Most men age really well, but John unfortunately wasn’t one of them.
Thanks for your sincere compliment and love, I’m not complete without you as my Fan 🌹🎻 I have you to be most thankful for 🎻🎻🌹
@@johnmellencamp9644 You're welcome... ;)
This is the first song I every heard by John Mellencamp. God do I Iove it still.
1981. Back when music still had soul. And heart. And was relatable and real.
I'm feeling a little James Brown in this performance. Especially at the end. Good job.
Lol.
For me it was drag racing and bon fires in the desert, Mellencamp and springsteen before he turned into a snowflake
Amen brotha. That was magical.
Nostalgia has died. Not sure what kind of memories this tech generation will have 40 years from now when they look back. Not sure they will have any real ones.
Bullshit memory none of that ever happened
Who's still jamming to this in 2020?
me
Oh Yeah!!!!
Jerry Lai I am!
Watchin it right now...mar.6th.2020
@@andrewegers7458 Great video!
I remember my girlfriend at the time saying "I heard this song on the radio that I just love. I don't know the artist or the title but it talks about "hands in my back pockets". Sounds so quaint now, that we had no way of finding anything about a song until you heard it announced on the radio.
so true...kinda miss those times
the guys behind mellencamp are not dancers, it's his friggin band at the time. This came straight from the original video for this tune, it was meant to be campy. Besides, you gotta love his Mitch Ryder sweater and shirt.
thanks captain obvious
I was in my teens when Cougar did his dance here. It was awkward as fuck even by 80’s standards. He improved and donned that Jean jacket and I tell you what that sum bitch owned music for a while!
I don't see you in the video.. Losser
I disagree. that is definitely Ringo back there !! and he is shakin' like elvis !
Cainen Gray it could be
The John Cougar interview with Bill Maher;priceless ....... Thanks Mr. Cougar!
It HAD to be the 80's! Where else you gonna see "Johnny Cougar" looking like he's in High School, and flanked by a half dozen guys in PINK tuxedos?? Strange video, indeed, but The Kid had it, way back then. Great moves, Sir Mellencamp. One of the last of the true rockers.
this song sends my memories back 40 years to much happier times Thanks John Cougar
This was my theme song for one of the most amazing nights of my life. It was 1981. I was on the road. I stopped at the Redondo Beach Pier to watch the sunset, and met an amazing girl. The rest, as they say is history.
Awesome!!!

Wow! That’s a really great story!
Awesome, 1981 was one of the best years ever. Beautiful woman and great music.
@@AmericanPatriot1776AP And the year I was born 😊
Saw this show in Cincinnati in 87
The best live show I ever saw possibly out of over 60 concerts.
Sold out 18,000 people dancing together in the isles at their seats and on the floor .
Pretty amazing sight to see.
... Yes, John dances and moves awesome in person. ... Fabulous. 😉👍🙋🏻♀️💕
Sure, miss the 80's! John put out a lot of good music!
I remember this like it was yesterday. Brilliant. Great homage to James Brown. First singer to wear jeans to the American Music awards.
That was a weird video on so many levels 👍 love this song ❤️
