The summer of ‘80 . . . my best friend Shannon and I spent the summer working in his dad’s body shop, building and installing engines in the hot cars his dad built and painted. We were both 15 then. We got to drive all those cars and trucks all summer, often picking up my girlfriend Gina, sipping beers and toking an occasional joint, while this played on the radio about every 1/2 hour. We all moved on after that. Gina moved to another state, Shannon’s life was tragically ended by a drunk driver in’85. I’m 60 now, but any time I hear this song, it takes me back to that summer. A summer I’ll never forget.
Woah. That’s a sad story with great memories. So sorry for the lost of your best friend. God bless sir. I was only 2 years old that year. But I can tell you. The 1980’s was one of the best times to grow up in. I sure do miss those days. I remember most of the 1980’s very very well.
Similar my best friend nick and I did everything together ( very similar). Nick would always joke he was going to get on a banana boat one day and go to Australia. I woke up from a night of partying read the newspaper and some hunters had found a gun and human bones in the woods. Turned out nick never got on that boat but had committed suicide. He never told me about all his inner demons, I wish he had. I’m still living life for the both of us, great guy, great memories and I think of him often.

I think of this song as 2 teenagers in love & of course, the parents of the girl are protective. But teenage love is magical, blinding, mesmerizing…..nothing stops them. I know, I was a teen, once😘

Very grateful to the Professor of Rock's interview with Benny to clarify the lyrics. It's a beautiful story of one man's concern for a vulnerable family.
I had just started dating a 16 year old runaway who had shown up at our band practice .. it hadn’t quite become ‘a thing’ yet and I learned she had been graped by a roofer working on the house/apt she and some other runaways were living … I had felt I was falling in love with her (I was 17 or 18) but the police had intervened and she was taken in by a foster family and moved somewhere .. I felt pain for it not going anywhere but was also happy for her that she had gotten a safe place to live .. this song always reminded me of her
I was 20 yrs old & a waitress at an all night diner when this came out. I drove everybody CRAZY bcz I played it REPEATEDLY on the jukebox ALL NIGHT LONG!!! LOVE IT!! 💚☮️🧡
This was my favorite song. My girlfriend was 16 when I was 18. Man......at that age you DO know what romantic love is. That man is one of the most underrated vocalists ever.
One hit wonder, but one of the most beautiful one hit wonders ever. I fell in love with this song when I was a junior in high school and Knew I was in love with the college sophomore next door. It became OUR song. She actually gave me a chance and even stayed with me after joining the Navy....for 26 years. Three beautiful children. R and IP Benny, and thank you.
I was just talking to one of my daughters about meeting her dad when I was 15. I'm 56 now, and 7 children and 10 grandchildren later, we're still in love. When is right, it's right forever.
In the 1980's I was a teenager and all our music then had real meaningful meaning behind their music. That's the best music back then. They just don't have music like they did in the 1980's and 1990's. I sure miss those days and years.
Benny Mardones has 1 of the sexiest male voices of all times. I was just starting college. I absolutely went crazy every time this song played on the radio. Still one of my favorite 80's songs (CD's) today. Thanks Benny❗🧡👏🙏

I have always loved this song. Brings back so many beautiful memories for me. Love ballads from the 70's and early 80's had the best music genre for love songs.
1980......what a time for a young man of 16 years. Heartache can definitely be felt at that age. That was a time when you could call a radio station and request a song and dedicate it to someone.

Such great tone and expression of these vocals of Benny! Such a classic ✌🏽❤️
WOW.. He really had an amazingly powerful voice.. Always loved this song..👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
I was 16 years old when this came out. My then boyfriend , who became my husband, always dedicated this to me. More than 40 years later, it still gives me the chills, the romantic ones ❤❤❤
40 year's ! , I'm proud of you 2
I was 16 too ,we were blessed to enjoy those greatest years 70s,80s,90s👍💯
I thought I was your boyfriend, back then?!
Awww ❤❤
Thats awesome , l love Happy Endings.....
With out a doubt one of the all time great voices. R.I.P. Benny
I miss those days SO much. 😢
I was 13 in 1963 when I met my 15 year old first love. Still think of him and glad he's still alive at 76.
I think of this song as 2 teenagers in love & of course, the parents of the girl are protective. But teenage love is magical, blinding, mesmerizing…..nothing stops them. I know, I was a teen, once😘
You might be interested in The Professor of Rock's interview with Benny, covering the origin of the song and that often misinterpreted first line.
Benny was one of the true sweethearts of the music industry and it's a great interview.✌️
Rest in eternal peace mamá ❤Gloria!! My mom loved this song !! I still have the cassette !! She used to play it all the time in her Mazda RX 7! I was in 6th grade I believe!! I’ll never forget it! ❤I think that was the late 80’s, early 90’s !! I’m now 45 & it’s 2024 !! ❤
Very grateful to the Professor of Rock's interview with Benny to clarify the lyrics. It's a beautiful story of one man's concern for a vulnerable family.
Yes! Would highly recommend that anyone that loves this song look up that interview.very enlightening. Benny was a good guy. Peace be with you, Benny.
That was a great interview. I wish more people had watched that interview so they would understand the beautiful story behind the song.
Where can I see the interview? Couldn't find it here @@kittensanddaisies5615
INDEED !!
Been there...
I meet my husband when I was in the 8th grade. We Got married when I was 15 and he was 21. We've been together ever since. Been married 44 years
I love this song. This happened exactly like that to us.
He ha a GREAT voice.

Same with me, I was 14
One hit wonder, but one of the most beautiful one hit wonders ever.
I fell in love with this song when I was a junior in high school and Knew I was in love with the college sophomore next door. It became OUR song. She actually gave me a chance and even stayed with me after joining the Navy....for 26 years. Three beautiful children.
R and IP Benny, and thank you.
I was 21 years old then and just Discovered what love 💕 was all about l met my first girlfriend of 6 years she was in college & only 17
Sweet. Congrats!
One hit wonder..."Twice" ! 😊
I was just talking to one of my daughters about meeting her dad when I was 15. I'm 56 now, and 7 children and 10 grandchildren later, we're still in love. When is right, it's right forever.
Goodness gracious I MISS the 70's and 80's real music. ❤️🥀
Benny never got the acclaim he deserved. He was, without a doubt, one of the BEST singers ever!
In the 1980's I was a teenager and all our music then had real meaningful meaning behind their music. That's the best music back then. They just don't have music like they did in the 1980's and 1990's. I sure miss those days and years.
Well, every decade had their moments....I'm sure Get Down Tonight and Shake Shake Shake, Shake your booty isn't exactly deep philosophy.
We had loving love to go along with that meaningful meaning.
Great song. I miss all 70 and 80s music. It is still special to me . Great years. Great. Music 🎶🎵
I’m 72 now and still listening to this love these oldies. Who else is listening ❤
Great song. I have it on my playlist. 2024 this song is a classic.
For sure one of the greatest love songs of all time
Benny sang this so well. RIP. One of the greatest tunes ever.
When did he pass away?
He passed away in 2020 from complications of Parkinson's. @@eleanormassaro5195
Man... to go back and slow dance to this just one more time.
Voz maravilhosa, deixou muitas saudades❤
Benny Mardones has 1 of the sexiest male voices of all times. I was just starting college. I absolutely went crazy every time this song played on the radio. Still one of my favorite 80's songs (CD's) today. Thanks Benny❗🧡👏🙏
This is such a beautiful song. Benny's voice was amazing. He sings with so much passion. He will be missed with his amazing talent. FLY HIGH BENNY 😇😇😇. MASTERPIECE 💜💜💜
Benny's voice is none comparable to any other singer. This voice just takes you to another level way up to another galaxy.
❤ This song came on the radio yesterday in my car, while I was driving in heavy rain. It is so beautiful, and relevant.
Trust your heart. Amazing song
I'm 68 and I live for this kind of music
So grateful my aunt left me all of her music from the 70's and 80's. No doubt they knew exactly how to write music back then.
I was 14 in 1980. I basically grew up in the Best Era!
My kids wish they had what we had. My 17 year old tells me he wishes so badly he was a part of those times. 💯
I was 12 and did not know the rollercoaster I was getting into in the 80’s and I loved every single minute of it!!!
Not just music, we grew up without internet and social media. We had real life friends to hangout and talk on the phone. :)
@@33Jenesis It was great!!
I Graduated High School in 1980!!! This Song!! 😊😊😊😊😊Takes me back, I was 17.🎉
Takes you back to your first love, the chorus is breathtaking!
Thank God I was born 1979.
I got to enjoy the music 🎶of 🎵 80's and 90's.
But I still love 80's ❤️ more 🎉
I loved this song back in the 80’s and I love it still ❤️
A song for the ages . Thank you Benny.
And 44 years later - still in love with my darling.
I am glad that there are couples that stand the test of time that actually love each other !
I have always loved this song. Brings back so many beautiful memories for me. Love ballads from the 70's and early 80's had the best music genre for love songs.
For sure a couple would sing together with the radio Just belting it out So sexy🌺
What an incredible voice! Wow, I forgot
One song can instantly transport you back to such a good time in your life ❤😊
Benny has one of the best voices out there, RIP you are greatly missed
I was 16 when this song came out my boyfriend and I loved it 42 years later we still love it.
So underrated, music will never be this good again
That's the truth
You don't like the soft feminine voice of Justin Timberlake? 😂 These people today are weak.
I was just 11 years old at the time. I see a lot of people up in the 60's reminiscing about this beautiful song. Time goes by, memories remain.
When an exceptional vocalist and exceptional song unite, the emotional effect can be profound.
I absolutely Love this song and Benny’ amazing performance ❤❤❤rip 😢😢😢
Wow, I’m listening to this on July 4, 2024! Anyone else? 😊
same
1980......what a time for a young man of 16 years.
Heartache can definitely be felt at that age. That was a time when you could call a radio station and request a song and dedicate it to someone.
13 yrs old when this came out. Take me back to the good ole days.
One of my all time favorites. What a.voice!
What a voice!!!!!!
My future husband and I were roller skating and he said I’m going to marry you.. I was 16 and he was 18 and here we are 47 years later and he is still by boyfriend. I thank God for this gift.
I am listening to this and it is a great song.
Show muito massa essa música 🎶 🎶 🎶
So many wonderful memories of this so very missed era.
RIP Benny. Your music will live for a very long time.
