The fiddle and accordion combo in Mellencamp's music is one of the best sounds in all of pop music. I can't believe people don't talk about it more. It's immediately recognizable, such a great sound, it brings a cultural legacy with it, so much good to say about it. It always leaps out of the recording and is immediately present without taking over. And the guitarists in Mellencamp's music are also tasteful and interesting, too, like the Fender at the close of this one.
Was thinking the same thing. I don't know how long this combo of Mellencamp Band members lasted together, but they had "magic" especially 11 Dec 1987!!! Thank goodness they professionally recorded it. We can have it & the Future can have it FOREVER!!!

I was the audio mixer for this video. Back in 1987, I worked for a video company named Premore in North Hollywood. It was a 7pm session, and since I started working at 9am, and had an hour open before the session, I went ahead and mixed the song. At 7pm John's producer Don Gehman, opened the door with a rack of electronics in tow, to mix the song. I told him I had taken the liberty of doing a mix while waiting, and he said, "Lets hear it". After I played the video, he said, "What am I doing here!". It was a nice Xmas present for me to have him sign off on the mix! I loved the song, otherwise I most likely would have gone to dinner & waited.
I was working in South Bend, Indiana, ran into the violinist in this video bagging groceries, said to her "you were that band", she replied, "go tell John"

JCM came to Pittsburgh twice during the Lonesome Jubilee tour and I saw him both times. The two best shows I ever saw. Such energy and passion for their music.
I was there, both my wife and I (then girlfriend). They filmed this at the conclusion of the regular concert, ... in two separate takes. This was multiple night engagement, sold out Market Square Arena, Indianapolis. At the conclusion of a powerful, tight show, ... house lights came up and Mellencamp explained he'd appreciate if everyone would stick around. He explained they were going to shoot a concert video, and if you stick around you may be in it. During the explanation the film crew and stage hands got ready, etc. Surprisingly, many left the show as it was likely 11p by then ... but damn, this was his local crowd, at his absolute peak ... that's why I was surprised. I'd estimate a couple thousand people left. They performed two essentially identical takes, thanked everyone again ... then performed a couple more songs in an encore, rewarding for us sticking around. I remember being disappointed, as I was wanting to hear "I Need a Lover" ... even after all that! Maybe a year later finally saw this video on MTV Killer show, we had a great time. Proposed a couple months later on Valentines Day Married in June Honeymoon in Negril Jamaica Now 33yrs later, after countless trips back to Negril;) adult kids, retirement, life is good! It's true, time flys by ... I remember the concert like yesterday.
It was an EPIC concert! My boyfriend and I stayed - because WHO turns down two John Mellencamp concerts back-to-back??? I wore my boyfriend’s FFA jacket and he threw my bikini underpants (don’t ask how they came off) on the stage. We didn’t live together happily ever after, but this concert sealed a lifelong friendship - we still call each other Jack and Diane. ☮️💜 and Great Memories
I was at the show on Thursday night, 10th. We skipped school the entire day to get there first in line, back in the day of General Admission. At school the next day the principal called me to the office to ask why I had ditched. I said, Duh, John Mellencamp. He didn’t get it. John was a god to us in Bloomington. Bobby Knight and John Mellencamp is all we needed. Basketball and music. I was bummed when the video came out and it was the next night!
I was at this concert. 1987..,28 years ago,and it seems like yesterday. My then girlfriend and I sat just off stage right; next to Johns daughter Michelle. She was about 16-17 at the time. They made the video after the regular concert, and he treated the crowd with "I need a lover" after the filming was over. What a special time,I'd go back in an instant.
I'd like to know if you got a chance to talk to his daughter, or at least see what you thought...meaning, did she seem to be proud of her dad? Or embarrassed. You never know about kids that age. Myself, I'd have been proud.
John Mellencamp is truly a legend. Who doesn’t love him & his music!! Classics!!! Love his hair too!! Just love that Mellencamp grin when he smiles!!! ❤️🥰🎸👍🇺🇸
Maybe some day those words will be heard by future generations driving the highways that we built...Hope they have a better understanding. Heard this today on a road trip from NC to OH. The 30+ year old lyrics struck me. Timeless classic.
And some tears. JCM is a master songwriter; his lyrics = like poetry - are the voice of a generation. " Tell ourselves we're still the young lions..." Indeed! Rock on!
John, if you see this. I am about the same age as you. smoked all my life. I found recently. That a few drops of Hemp seed oil on my tongue. everyday. I feel so much better! And it helps with breathing and your voice! Love your music my friend! Glad to see you still doing it! Some say that if you gargle with olive oil once in a while. That it helps your throat and voice too!
What happened to our world 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 . I have to watch this to get excited In the morning to get going 😢. Look at how happy EVERYONE was to be there , from JOHN and his band , to the THOUSANDS of souls in that arena . What a shame , these young kids will just except this mind control because they have mainstreamed it so quickly 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ I’ll say this , I may not know what day of the week it is , or what year it is , off the bat , but damn it I know what a woman is 💯💯💯 and I KNOW people aren’t animals because they feel like it !!! I don’t care how old I get , I will NEVER except the mind control . What they have done to our people is sickening
"Where does our time go?" A humbling thought for sure. John's music is and always will be good at reminding me to reflect on those "good times" every now and then.
Ahhh … good old rock and roll songs … just made you happy and dance with a little education in it for you too when you thought of the lyrics … and John was a POET with his words then … saw him 3 times … I’ll never forget any of them … and the violin ?? … when they played TO it was her birthday and we all sang her Happy Birthday after John let us know … good times … I’m gonna be 55 this year but whenever I hear John I think I’m a teen again … Thanks John … I’ll be playing you forever … 🤙🙏❤️🇨🇦
I'm 48. I still remember hearing him being called "John Cougar" on the radio. Then John Cougar Mellencamp. Then eventually John Mellencamp. Never really thought about it, but I grew up listening to this guy. I guess that's why I'm still not sick of him even after hearing every one of his songs 1,000 times.
He makes me proud to be a Hoosier! Have seen him in fort Wayne Indianapolis Los Angeles and Sacramento where I live! He's a true down home Hoosier God bless John mellencamp!
Americana at it's finest, grew up with his music, so simple and good. That woman on the fiddle is cute making that face at :13 to the accordion player. Kind of like, I got this down PAT, and digging it, how about you. Very well done. Semper Fi.
I was at this concert at MSA in Indy. I also saw him at Riverbend in Cincinnati on this tour. I really enjoyed this concert, and his music. I agree that the accordion and violin in this song is exceptional. It makes the song. All of us know this part of the song, and it wouldn't be the same without it.

"where does the time go? Got a brand new house in escrow" is a brilliant lyric
Maybe a year later finally saw this video on MTV
Killer show, we had a great time.
Proposed a couple months later on Valentines Day
Married in June
Honeymoon in Negril Jamaica
Now 33yrs later, after countless trips back to Negril;) adult kids, retirement, life is good!
It's true, time flys by ...
I remember the concert like yesterday.
That’s a fantastic story man! Thanks for sharing!

Yes, it REALLY was that easy, simple, loving and innocent. ☮️💜
John's an artist-- on canvass ,as well as the stage!! Love his style and his special voice!!!
This song is forever in my mind...family...grandkids..

Me too.....life isn't much fun anymore....
Thank God we have the music....We can escape for a few minutes
Right
inthewick1 I was 21, the 80’s were savage as the kids say today !
I recall being absolutely mesmerized by this song. So thankful I was able to catch him in both the eighties and nineties...
I graduated in '85. Sometimes I forget how incredible this little Hoosier is. That is powerful stuff!
+Jeff Fisher I was there too behind the stage...thats when they still used to sell seats behind the stage
+Jeff Fisher Do you remember John getting pissed off at the director and throwing his boots off and lighting up a cigarette?
Jeff Fisher great story
I'd like to know if you got a chance to talk to his daughter, or at least see what you thought...meaning, did she seem to be proud of her dad? Or embarrassed. You never know about kids that age. Myself, I'd have been proud.
Jeff Fisher cool story!
I sure know where I wish I was Dec. 11, 1987 !!
John Mellencamp is truly a legend. Who doesn’t love him & his music!! Classics!!! Love his hair too!! Just love that Mellencamp grin when he smiles!!! ❤️🥰🎸👍🇺🇸

Thanks for the love and support, it’s really nice seeing you here.
1987 when we were young with not a care in the world. Peace to all.
Yes and communities were family! My Dad grew a huge garden to feed his family and the neighbors too! Wish I could find that way of life now!
Rock on!
Feel good music. Love his songs. May they be shared and remembered fondly.
I never realized how deep this song really is when I was a kid growing up in the 80's. Love this song even more!
From one Hoosier to another, thanks John. Always good to return back to Bloomington, Indiana when we can. Stay true to yourself
Still love this song..
2024!!
What happened to our world 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢 . I have to watch this to get excited In the morning to get going 😢. Look at how happy EVERYONE was to be there , from JOHN and his band , to the THOUSANDS of souls in that arena . What a shame , these young kids will just except this mind control because they have mainstreamed it so quickly 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️
I’ll say this , I may not know what day of the week it is , or what year it is , off the bat , but damn it I know what a woman is 💯💯💯 and I KNOW people aren’t animals because they feel like it !!! I don’t care how old I get , I will NEVER except the mind control . What they have done to our people is sickening
Amen
We Hoosiers love John Mellencamp and his music no matter how old we get. Awesome music from an awesome time.
"Where does our time go?" A humbling thought for sure. John's music is and always will be good at reminding me to reflect on those "good times" every now and then.
Bring back the 80s
Ahhh … good old rock and roll songs … just made you happy and dance with a little education in it for you too when you thought of the lyrics … and John was a POET with his words then … saw him 3 times … I’ll never forget any of them … and the violin ?? … when they played TO it was her birthday and we all sang her Happy Birthday after John let us know … good times … I’m gonna be 55 this year but whenever I hear John I think I’m a teen again … Thanks John … I’ll be playing you forever … 🤙🙏❤️🇨🇦
John is such a great storyteller! Love this album. ♥️✨️🤍

2020 and John still has a message in his songs that all blue collar people can groove with! Hats off Mr. Cougar Mellencamp🎩
Agreed goosebumps every single time I hear this. Reminds me of my family... My youth...I love you John. Thank you

Have always liked John Cougar Mellencamp. Love his voice ❤
Americana at it's finest, grew up with his music, so simple and good. That woman on the fiddle is cute making that face at :13 to the accordion player. Kind of like, I got this down PAT, and digging it, how about you. Very well done. Semper Fi.
The accordion player died of a kidney disease within the next 8 years, I believe.
@@farmasyst He was and always bad ass. GB his Soul.
The best Mellencamp band ever!
R.I.P. John Cascella...🎶
Awesome song thanks for all your songs you are the best
Nothing but Goosebumps and some tears every time I hear John sing this
Yep.
I too was at this very concert! Saw Mellencamp 4 times over the years, all at the now gone Market Square Arena. I miss that arena.
