As they reach their 30’s and realize that pop
Listened to music that was good for the soul and it allowed us to reflect on our years growing up... holding hands instead of having your hands held up because of you doing wrong. We settled things with our fist instead of a gun and we got over it. You went to a club to have fun and enjoy , not for drugs and looking for trouble. We listened to music that was good for the soul, not to motivate us to do wrong!!!!and left with a smile on our face!

Gets me too Joeann. I just turned 49 two days ago and this song just took me back to that awkward and skinny kid that couldn't seem to do anything right, unless it was on the banks of the river somewhere. Ahhh, there he was at peace and there is where he found himself and there, on those muddy banks, is where he would learn about love and life and how precious and sometimes painful they are. He would eventually find himself many miles away from this beautiful and sacred place but every two or three years he returns and breathes in those old memories and it is this song playing on an old radio somewhere in the background as he tells his young son of the adventures he and this old muddy river shared together when he was a boy. Life is good.

Well I lived on the outskirts of town
In an eight room farmhouse, baby
When my brothers and friends were around
    There was always somethin' doin'
Had me a couple of real nice girlfriends
Stopped by to see me every once in a while
When I think back about those days
All I can do is sit and smile
    That's when a sport was a sport
    And groovin' was groovin'
    And dancin' meant everything
We were young and we were improvin'
    Laughin' laughin' with our friends
    Holding hands meant somethin' baby
    Outside the club "Cherry Bomb"
    Our hearts were really pumpin'
    Say yeah, yeah, yeah
    Say yeah, yeah, yeah
The winter days they last forever
And the weekends went by so quick
Went ridin' around this little country town
We were goin' nuts, girl, out in the sticks
One night me with my big mouth
A couple guys had to put me in my place
When I see those guys these days
We just laugh and say do you remember when
    That's when a sport was a sport
    And groovin' was groovin'
    And dancin' meant everything
We were young and we were improvin'
    Laughin' laughin' with our friends
    Holding hands meant somethin' baby
    Outside the club "Cherry Bomb"
    Our hearts were really pumpin'
    Say yeah, yeah, yeah
    Say yeah, yeah, yeah
    Say yeah, yeah, yeah
    Say yeah, yeah, yeah
    Seventeen has turned thirty-five
I'm surprised that we're still livin'
    If we've done any wrong
    I hope that we're forgiven
Got a few kids of my own
And some days I still don't know what to do
I hope that they're not laughin' too loud
    When they hear me talkin'
    Like this to you
    That's when a sport was a sport
    And groovin' was groovin'
    And dancin' meant everything
We were young and we were improvin'
    Laughin', laughin' with our friends
Holding hands meant so much baby

1987...I met my husband the year this song first came out. I loved it then, love it more now. Upbeat, nostalgic, I especially love the fiddle. The lyrics, music and the video are so perfectly matched. Never having seen the video until now, it's amazing how it's exactly what I envisioned when I first heard this song. "Dancin' meant everything...holdin' hands meant somethin' baby..."went ridin' around this little country town, we were goin' nuts, girl, out in the sticks". I grew up in a little country town, "in the sticks", so these lyrics resonate for me. I'm so thankful that I my childhood was in a "hick town" rather than "the city". Lots of open farmland, streams, fields, fresh air, horses, cows, chickens, clean, easy living. Every time I listen to this song, I end up with tears of joy, running down my cheeks, just like back in 1987. Thanks, JCM!

I absolutely LOVE the brown and white couple dancing and being in love. Might not mean much to some, but it wasnt highly accepted even when this song was wrote, but it reminds me of my family...especially my brown aunt and white uncle (my moms family is brown). Anyways....high school sweethearts and still married in their 70s!! They had haters, but nothing stopped them from being in love like this and are still very much in love to this day ❤️. Color doesn't define love ♡♡♡

"My old man worked 20 years on the line
      And they let him go
Now everywhere he goes out looking for work
They just tell him that he's too old"
John and Bruce are REALISTS. They subtly attacked Reagan and his administration because they SLOWLY destroyed the BLUE COLLAR, UNION, WORKING CLASS... they grew up with.
40 years since trickle down economics began... (and before this pandemic) the unemployment rate may have been low... BUT THOSE WAGES NEVER PROPERLY ROSE.

John Mellencamp is arguably the most important roots rocker of his generation. John has made fiddles, hammer dulcimers, Autoharps and accordions lead rock instruments on a par with electric guitar, bass and drums, and he also brought what he calls 'a raw Appalachian' lyrical outlook to his songs. Mellencamp's best music is rock 'n roll stripped of all escapism, and it looks directly at the messiness of life as it's actually lived. In his music, mortality, anxiety, acts of God, questions of romance and brotherhood, and crises of conscience all collide and demand hard decisions. This is rock music that tells the truth on both its composer and the culture he's observing

*4:29* This was my grandfather, Daniel 'Danny' Linne, as a teen living in Indiana, a mutual friend of Mellencamp. In this snippet, he is seen living life and having fun. He was a cool grandpa, who had some quirks and made not so great choices in life, but to me, he was still the coolest. He had a devious sense of humor and loved to joke. Overall, we loved each other; we had a pretty decent relationship for him being my only grandfather. He passed away rather quickly, too soon. I love this video-this song will always remind me of him and how much each of us should value life for what it is. Also, in honor of Veteran's Day, Thank you for your service, Grampese! I won tickets on the radio to a 12 people private showing at WBCN in Boston about 23 years ago. My brother and I are huge Mellencamp fans. I took him with me. It was just us 2 and 10 other people along with John. We went into a very small room in the radio station and just talked for about 1/2 hour. Then we all went into the studio and went on the radio live with John. He sang Pink Houses, Small Town and Cherry Bomb. I even got a little hug in. One of the best times of my life. Saw him several times in concert too. Love him!!!

For my younger days in Smalltown, NM it was the Lota' Burger instead of the Cherry Bomb. That's when a sport was a sport . . . .yeah, yeah, yeah . . . .I'm surprised that we're still living. . . . We were young and we were improving . . .

Hadn't heard this song for a while, but that line often passes through my head. There's something so Christian about it:
"Me with my big mouth. A couple guys had to put me in my place. When l see those guys these days . ."
Beautiful lyrics. Stay humble. Love the Lord. Accept your penance. Reconcile.
