Love the log cabin trim tool rulers!! Blocks come out perfect.
Thank you - Yajaira
I found another tip on another video. If you ever get confused as to where to start your next round, it will always be the one with 2 seams. 🙂
Great suggestion! Thank you for sharing it with us! 💖 -Michelle
I bought the Pineapple ruler after watching your video and am almost done and now I need to buy this ruler as well!! Great video. Thank you!

Glad you like them! - Yajaira
I’m very new in the quilting world. I’ve only done 2 quilts (for babies) and they were so-so. Quilting is not a regular thing here on the island but I love it. Now that ruler is a must for me since I’m literally a beginner. It would be of great help to me to make this log cabin project. Thank you Jen for this wonderful tutorial.
Thanks for sharing! We'd love to see it - Yajaira
Just beautiful.💞
Thank you - Yajaira
Wow. Fabulous tutorial.
Thanks for watching! ;D
- Beth
Lovely. Thank you❣️❣️❣️
You’re welcome 😊 - Yajaira
Love your videos and thorough teaching, a hint tho for the start of each round when they are square, the first strip goes where there are 2 seams on the log side
Good tip! Thank you for sharing - Yajaira
I have learned so much from watching your videos. You're an excellent teacher! I ordered the cordless iron from your site a couple years ago and love it!! I use it every day when I am sewing! I also ordered the log cabin ruler from you and absolutely love that and how easy it makes trimming up the square! My courthouse steps hot pad turned out great with your help! on these patterns, in the future, would you consider listing the total yardage for each color? That way we can use different fabrics after we initially get the kit and will know how much we need to order to make them in other colors? Thanks so much.
We're glad you enjoy these fun kits! Thank you for your feedback. We will definitely take that into consideration. Thanks for watching!! 💖 -Michelle
I wish I had this ruler when making my log cabin quilt, my first ever!
Any of the products that are being used should be in the description part. If, you're still having trouble using it let us know and I would be more than happy to help. - Yajaira

If you pin perpendicular to your stitching line, with the heads of the pins extending off the fabric, you can easily remove the pins as you stitch . This results in more accurate pinning.
Great tip! Thanks for watching!! -Michelle
To remind me where to place the next strip so I don’t get the block order messed up, I always turn the block in the same direction to sew the next strip on, either clockwise or counter clockwise depending on your pattern directions. Put a sticky note on your machine to remind you!
Another trick is to sew the new strip onto the block side that has two seam joins on it (except for the first round which has the center square).
Great tips! Thanks so much for sharing them with us! -Michelle
Oh love this…I made my first log cabin quilt and it my blocks were off!! I will be ordering this for sure!! Can you please tell me the name of the material from MODA you did the wall hanging with….Its beautiful…THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
We're happy this project inspires you! These fabrics are from the Through The Years line by Kansas Troubles Quilters for Moda Fabrics. Thanks so much for watching! -Michelle
Nice video and info on the ruler. By the way I’ve noticed that I haven’t seen Tammy lately. Did I miss something somewhere along the line?
Tammy is still working with us here at Shabby Fabrics. I am sure you guys will see her soon! - Yajaira
This is such a nice video! Do you know the brand of the iron used in this video? It looks like a nice size and I like the resting plate too. Thank you,
Cynthia
Thank you! We're glad you enjoy this fun project! The iron Jen is using is the Panasonic 360 Freestyle cordless and you can check them out here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/c5015/notions/pressing-and-ironing?filters=353-5402 💖 -Michelle
WOW! a lot of info shared here. Thank you! What foot are you using on your machine?
We're glad you enjoy this fun project! We are using the Bernina 97D Foot with the dual feed engaged on our machine- great eye! 💖 -Michelle
Love this video..how can I get the creative grids free download to cut the logs to size please?
Glad you enjoyed it! Here is the link to the free downloads page: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Free-Downloads.aspx - Yajaira
Great tutorial! Thank you! Question about using the wool ironing mat directly on the cutting mat. Have you had any problems with the heat from the iron warping the mat? I’m assuming you aren’t using steam, right?
Hi Carol - While this is our practice for filming our tutorials, we do not keep our wool ironing mats on our cutting mats (or plastic) in our sewing rooms - we do place those on top of an ironing board. Because the we do not use the iron for long periods of time while filming, it hasn't affected the large cutting mat so far. Hope this makes sense :) -Michelle
@@ShabbyFabrics ah ok, thank you!
Really like watching your videos. I have learned so much. Is that wall hanging still available?

Great tutorial! What thread are you using ?
Thank you! We're thrilled you enjoy this project!! The thread we used for this is our Neutral Piecing - 3pc Konfetti Thread Set found here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/p66906/neutral-piecing-3pc-konfetti-thread-set?ref=SearchAutocomplete -Michelle
Did you not want to engage your dual feed when you are piecing on your Bernina?
Great question! You can certainly engage the dual feed, especially if you are sewing many layers at once! - Yajaira
Another way of not sewing on the wrong side is to lay out the unstitched bock in the shape of the block and take one piece off and add it then there’s no risk of getting it wrong
Great suggestion! Thank you for sharing. 💖 -Michelle
Does the ruler come in other sizes than the 10”. I like smaller log cabin blocks.
Good question! With the 10" ruler you can make sizes up to 10" meaning that you can still do smaller sizes with the same ruler. I hope this was helpful if you have any other questions please let me know. - Yajaira
Always love and learn so much from your tutorials and Tammy too. He pineapple Creative tutorial was WONDERFUL and might not have made one without it. However, with this log cabin one, I must be missing something. If have to cut all pieces to size to start with in length. Why not the width. It doesn’t seem as helpful as the pineapple Creative ruler where you didn’t have to cut to size.
Great question! If you use the ruler to square up after each seam, you don't have to cut to the exact size lengthwise or widthwise. Many quilters prefer to cut to size to begin with to avoid excess waste.😊 - Yajaira
I haven't tried my first quilt yet , but watching many tutorials on RUclips, I cannot understand why, if you cut stips to exact size, why you have to keep trimming with every single round. Not a criticism at all, I enjoyed the video, but having never quilted, I'd like to learn as much as possible before I jump in, it just seems like a lot of waste and quite a lot of time wasted too.
Thank you for showing how to use the ruler. I have one any never understood how to use it.
Glad it was helpful! - Yajaira
You're welcome! Jen's #1 purpose for creating these videos is to help quilters like you find the best way to create quilting projects as accurately and efficiently as possible, and many times it's knowing which tool to use and how to maximize it's functionality! I'm so glad you now know how to utilize this tool in all of your log cabin projects! ~ Casey
What kind of thread are you using?
Great question! In this video Jen is using the "Neutral Piecing - 3pc Konfetti Thread Set." Here is the link to that:www.shabbyfabrics.com/Neutral-Piecing-3pc-Konfetti-Thread-Set-P66906.aspx?preview=true - Yajaira
What bernina foot was used in the creative grids log cabin video?
In this video Jen is sewing with the 57D foot. We recommend that foot, or the 97D. 💖-Bethany
I noticed you did not engage the dual feed. That feature has been a game changer to better seams.
Hi Sandi! We definitely agree with you and we do typically have it engaged on our Bernina. -Michelle
Jan mentioned in her video a free download regarding how to cut the size of the strips. I don't see the link for this. Thank you
You can find this on our Free Downloads page here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Free-Downloads.aspx -Michelle
Hola desde Colombia. Muy lindo 😍😍😍 . Traducción al español 🥰🥰🥰
Muchas Gracias! - Yajaira
Here's a dumb question for... Why are the blocks not cut so the finished size is correct without trimming? Just curious.
Hello Mary! We like to include extra fabric in our kits so that it allows room for error. - Yajaira
What is the brand name of the thread Jennifer refers to in this tutorial so can look up on your web site. Thank you
Hello Marilyn! Any of the thread that Jen uses in her videos can be found here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/SHOW-ALL-C3444.aspx - Yajaira
Could you do a quilt as you go after you make your block?
Great question! I wouldn't recommend using a quilt as you go technique for that first project, but the finished project is small enough that you should be able to quilt using the "stitch in the ditch" method on your domestic machine. - Yajaira
If you have a smallish cutting mat, put the block on the smallish mat and then put it on your cutting table. Just rotate the smallish mat.
Great tip! Thank you for sharing. - Yajaira
Where is the sewing and trimming sequence download located?
Great question! This one is a little difficult to find. I went ahead and attached the link to that download right here: s3.amazonaws.com/checker-cg/instructions/CGRJAW10_Instructions_Website.pdf - Yajaira
@@ShabbyFabrics Thanks so much!
How do I calculate the amount of fabric for a twin size log cabin quilt
According to Scrapish.com, "Each yard of fabric should yield 14 (2 1/2 inch) strips. If you're using 2 1/2 inch jelly roll packs you will need at least 4 jelly rolls for the 'logs'. Each jelly roll is about 3 yards of fabric. This would be about 12 yards of fabric." Hope this helps!! -Michelle
Why did you choose to not use the duo feed?
Great tip! We will take that into consideration for our future tutorials. - Yajaira
Where is the free download? I found it.
Glad you found it! Thanks for commenting!! 💖 -Michelle
Where do I find this pattern?
We have a free download available when you click on this link: www.shabbyfabrics.com/Free-Downloads.aspx - Yajaira
Is the thread Aurafil?
It sure is! You can shop our selection of Aurifil threads here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/search?sortOrder=6&q=aurifil+thread+set 💖 -Michelle

Is there a way to enable closed caption on this?
Hi Patricia! While watching the video, in the bottom right of the screen you'll see a small white rectangle with a cc. If you click that, you should be able to enable closed caption. Thank you for watching! - Sophie
Hi Sophie, I know that trick but there isn't that option on this video.
I see you ironing on top of your cutting mat.......I warped my mat doing that......just so you know. The steam went right through...ugh!
We're sorry to hear that. In the video Jen uses the Wool pressing mat on top of the cutting mat. I went ahead and attached the link for you here: www.shabbyfabrics.com/wool-pressing-mat-14-x-14-P67892.aspx?ref=SearchAutocomplete - Yajaira
You are soo cruel . That ruler is crazy WOW but 50$ canadien $$
But i still want it
I am farly New at sewing
I just mademoiselle a few cabon blocs
Wish i already had that ruler.. thank you soo much
This ruler is a great tool to have! Highly recommend it! Thank you for your comment! - Abby
The whole point of this ruler is to not trim to exact size, but to use the ruler. By trimming the logs to the exact size you defeated the purpose so this video was not helpful
As Jen mentions, it's optional (not in the instructions) to trim prior to attaching additional pieces. Hope that helps!! -Michelle
Too much talk.
Thanks for the feedback.
