The test of 4k 120 has a significant difference in time, but the 4k 60 after about an hour I think both are fine and either work depending on your workflow. I have been using the GoPro for a while, so not sure if I would change it especially on how little I use my camera now vs my ZV1.

Oh because I'm a dog trainer I run them extended periods of time to record sessions for families. Need the portability, stabilization and durability of action cameras when working with dogs, and I run higher extended frame rates when I may need to catch a moment and replay in slow motion to break down what happens situationally. I work year round outside for hour sessions at a time, so scorching summers at 90+ degrees, and during the winters as well. I saw you asked in the video and I know I'm a pretty niche use case, but that's why I super appreciate these reviews! Thanks again!

I just bought the DJI Action 3 and just started playing with it.
Whenever possible I want to use the protective frame and yes; I think this will impact cooling and make the camera shutdown quicker. With the protective frame, indoors and no fan to aid cooling the camera does stop recording after 27 minutes at 4k 16:9 60fps and 13 minutes at 120 fps. I measured the temperature of the camera with an IR thermometer and this reaches around 40°C.
Even though this means the camera may shut down even here in the Netherlands on a very hot day I am happy with these results. I think there is a high chance that I will "shut down" before the camera does 😁

I'd been using the 10 quite frequently for quick interviews in various temperature, direct sunlight to shaded environments. (w/media mods in all cases) Recently, I mounted one on a race car without the media mod and it sat for quite some time baking in the direct sunlight...temp around 80 degrees with ligh breeze. The camera inadvertently was activated twice for 15 minutes each while stationary.. Finally, the tired time it was started, the car began to roll out and 30 seconds later it overheated and shut down. Point being any indoor test in a mild temperature environment will not give a adequate test of overheating. These camera overheat when operated in an already heat induced environment.

As a motovlogger, I have recorded for hours on end. This summer, I rode in 100+F temps for 45-65 minute stretches, for a total of 3 hours of riding. I was recording on a Hero 8, 9, and 10, all at 2.7k/30fps. None of them overheated - but we were moving at a good speed, which helped, as did the low framerate.
A few weeks later, I was recording [static, the Hero 9 on a GoPro grip and the Hero 10 on a 4ft selfie stick] at 4k/max FPS [120/240] and both cameras overheated, and the Hero 10's battery actually swelled up inside the camera body and wouldn't come out - the cap popped off of it, and I had to wait a while for it to cool down before I could remove the battery. It was almost 100F that day too, and quite sunny. The cameras overheated in under 15 minutes of continuous recording.
All that is to say that while it's not the typical use case, it's still something that's done on a regular basis, so I thank you for doing these tests to help me narrow down my next camera.

Baseball and Softball games in the Southwest are real use case scenarios in which you are using 4k or 5.3k and 60 fps. Mount the camera to the backstop and then zoom and pan in post edit to get all the action. The problem is when the games run 90 to 120 minutes long and the temperature is over 100 degrees. Being able to handle the heat is a must. My own testing has the sunlight on the black body adding to the build up of heat, so even with a decent breeze it can still shut down. A Sun Shade and Raspberry Pi Heat Sinks have helped with a GoPro Hero 9 continue to run for most days and games. Glad to see they are looking into the issue and building solutions into the newer models. Thanks for the video.

Your comment/question on why would you use 4k/60 or 120 for long periods of times....scuba diving. I turn it on, jump in and when I surface I will turn it off. Dives can last 30-50 minutes depending on depth. I currently use the Hero 7 and have zero issues with 4k60. The 4k120 is tempting as it would help with slowing down video for situation or improving quality with fast moving fish. I would think if I was staying above the 16m limit there would be no issue as it would be somewhat "watercooled", but in a dive case I'm not sure how it will do since the plastic and air inside won't transfer heat as well. I do like how you did test it in a practical situation, slight air movement and mounted. Wish they would get these early models in some divers hands too. Best review and heat test I have seen yet. Thank you!

Ok, now you are right about running the action camera static 4k 60fps which is not what they are designed for. HOWEVER, I do the static 4k in real world as i put them in random places in a room or outside depending on what I'm shooting, as they are small and inconspicuous. As I film a wedding I like to add them for b roll, for places im not able to be around it as i might be filming say the speeches at a wedding and i want the gopro facing guests at various points in a room. Even during a Wedding service putting them at the back of the church, at the sides etc.
I have also been filming a school play production and put the gopro on stage static, in the audience for reactions etc. So it is a great video using them statically for over heating.

In my experience, I bought the GoPro hero 3 and the GoPro hero 5 as soon as they came out, and both of them had a lot of issues with freezing until the firmware updates. I like the quality of the hero 11 more than the DJI, but I may wait a bit before picking up a new action camera. 🥶

  • @SDA921

Thanks for the video! I use my GP:H11 primarily as a dashcam currently (original projects I got it for on are hold XP), so overheating has been something I've been testing to find the ideal settings for it. The issue as a dashcam I'm finding at this time is that I'm having to pump hot air over it as running cool air would fog up my windows and freeze me to death in the winter XD So while it is getting airflow, I imagine it is adding to the problem rather than helping during the winter months. Current tests I've run are at the 5.3k 30fps setting in the cinematic preset. With this setting, it lasts about 32 minutes before thermal shutdown with the media mod pacl (unfortunately 10 minutes shorter than a my typical commute one way) and at least 50 minutes without the media mod (no trips yet longer than that). While I don't anticipate too much change to this, my next tests will be at 24 fps with the media mod and I might look into a battery powered fan or something to see if I can get a touch more life out of it. I expect the sweet spot will be a 4k setting for video quality and longevity, but it is something I will be playing around with over the next few weeks.

      @DavidManningvlog  2 года назад +1

ok, got it, GoPro=better dynamic range and stuff, but overheats faster than Action 3, GoPro still doesn't show in app mirror image WHILE recording. Buying the Action 2 was a coin of trust to DJI. Question: How can we return Action 2 to Dji and get a discount for an action 3 cause the Action 2 was a test made on the buyers who trusted them. The trust must go BOTH ways. For my use, GoPro will not be used (ever), until they solve the live in app stream, and DJI must keep up the good work but must gain back the buyers trust. Good to see Action 1 (the legend), back in a new coat :) I just love when DJI listens to his community. And you made another perfect video.

Here in Phoenix my garage gets over 100°F in the summer and sometimes I have to film outside in the sun at 100°F+ temps. I try to keep the camera shaded but am always having to stop the project and toss my camera in the fridge for a bit. I'd be curious how long any of them would run in those conditions. About every 6 months I watch reviews of all the mainstream action cameras to convince myself to pull the trigger and get one. Looks like the DJI Osmo Action 3 is dangerously close to checking all my boxes including a more attractive price.

Great review but one thing is missing. I traveled a lot. When you using the camera as a dash camera record the beautiful view. Go pro and action 2 over heated under the sun exposure within 10 mins. This is the reason I have go with Action 3. This is very important for lots of people.

I run the go pro always for longer, like for lectures. In a classroom, having a recording of an hour or 90 minutes is normal. It is important that a camera does not overheat in that time. Outside I never had overheating problems but in a classroom, yes. A solution was to have a cable connected to the camera. So, yes, this overheating test is important information and not far fetched. I'm glad to see that the go pro 11 was better than the go pro 10.

My real world use of my gopro 7 hero black is to mount it to the wall at a bar and point it at our band's stage, plug in power to the USB C port and hit record and let it roll until the card is full (about 4 hours).
That is what it can do and that's what I expect from the 11 if I decide to go that route. I'll get one on amazon, see if it can do it and if not, send it back and get the DJI.

The bigger question is, how long does it take them to cool back down? I would be making fishing videos so 45 minutes is not great, so maybe I need to put it in an ice cooler when not in use? Sounds like I would need more than 1 camera if I am gonna film a 3 hour fishing trip on my kayak.

5:00 ! Exactly. These people who keep asking about heating issues are the people who are using the GoPro for the wrong reasons. The only thing GoPro is guilty of doing for the past Hero camera's is advertising to the "vlogers" and "everyday" person. It's a sports action camera.

I've never had the X3 overheat! Or the X2 for the matter. The key on the X3 and it's the same with all these action cameras is to set the screen to sleep after a minute or so. On the X3, you usually don't need the screen while recording in 360. You'll get the best battery life like that too!

To answer the question as to who runs their camera on continuously...that would be me. I try to run at 2.7k 60 as I am trying to record my son's baseball games. Of course, I am not looking to watch these games in their entirety after recording, but hoping to catch key moments. Now, baseball is played outside and often in hot sun, and my hero8 simply could not run for more than 5 to 10 minutes in 100 to 110 degree heat without shutting down. So, I started to use the h8 without a battery installed to help w cooling, and it did a tiny bit better, but still not enough useful footage as I would check in between innings to find the camera was not recording and was powered down. Mind you, I have a rig to mount to a fence in order to be as unobtrusive as possible, and do not want 2 hours of a fence, so holding the camera is not really an option. So I brought the hero7 in, and it performed pretty much the same. For this reason, I am hoping that the A3 is the ticket, but time will tell. Not to mention that the weather should be cooling down now that it is Fall. This weekend will be the test as it is supposed to be in the upper 90s.

  • @NowhereForMeToSit
    @NowhereForMeToSit 2 года назад

I'll tell you when I use those cameras at 4k 60 for that long. When I film my son's baseball games with my GoPro mounted on the fence behind homeplate. 1.5-2 hours long. Tournament weekends mean at least 2 games sometimes back to back. 😅 I have had my GP shut down on me this past summer and I didn't realize it until I went to download a clip of him making a highlight play. 😥

I do POV trail running and cycling videos and I do have the requirement of shooting 4k30 for up to 2.5hrs (for a half marathon run). So running off external battery and not overheating is very important for me. For the previous generation I switched to Insta360 One RS, but now I might have to go back to Action 3 especially when they release 10bit.

FYI: Some people shoot on a tripod during a podcast and may need up to 1:30 mins or more. I tried the Action 3 and stopped it's non-stop recording after 1hr and 45 minutes with the battery still around 30% left (I just shut it down). So if you do a follow-up, make sure to mention that some people use them in-studio (affordable multi-camera start-up/option) on a tripod.

'you should use a different camera'. Sure, but not everyone can just swap out to a larger camera at the tail end of a day or afternoon mtbing or snowboarding. Or just going into some woods on a cloudy day in the winter for those of us who live in less equatorial latitudes! 🙂 That's why people ask about low light performance. Yes a camera with larger sensor would obviously do better but that comes with bulk, size and other properties that limit use in the scenarios action cameras are designed for. Low, or even just not super sunny, light is important.
Is your full review look looking at the other colour modes? I.e. flat vs d-cinelike. Would be really interesting to see that comparison regarding the dynamic range potential of both cameras.

How hot are the GoPro 11 and Action 3 to the touch after recording for 10+ minutes? My issue with the GoPro Hero 10 was that it wouldn't overheat in the sense that it stopped working, but it would overheat to the point where I could barely hold it because it was so hot it would nearly burn my hand. I ended up returning mine to see if this was fixed with the GoPro 11 because I never had this issue with my older GoPros.

Purchased an OA4. In UK (EU firmware) a warning is displayed when you select 4k @ 120fps stating a max of 9minutes recording time can be achieved. I guess it’s following EU requirements stipulating that a max of 48degrees can be reached for a camera. Does make you wonder if GoPro have always adhered to this requirement in the EU.

remember that in case of GOPRO 10 vs GOPRO 11 overheating is an SOFTWARE issue
10 have the same processor as 11 so ... its literally the same camera , only one difference in 11 is higher quality sensor and software update
so if they rly want they can fix gopro10 easly and add the same futures as in gopro 11

Nice job. Like you say, we don't really shoot this was normally but it's good to know. The only scenario I could see might be a school sports team, like football, letting an action cam or two run continuously at 60 or 120p. Even then, if someone changed the battery between each quarter, turned them off and let them cool a little until the start of the next quarter, they might get a whole game of 60 or 120p video.

There are many scenarios that people would run their camera from full to empty and then pick the best parts of the footage. Just becase you and the other youtuber cannot think of them doesn't mean anything.
These camera should either: 1) be able to record at maximum resolution from full to empty battery (or continusoulsy and restricted by SD card size, if powered by USB) WITHOUT interruption so you don't miss footgage right after the dreaded 'overheating' message, OR, perhaps more realistically 2) be marketed with the full disclaimers that they are NOT to be used continuously (which is not mentioned anywhere, except from their support department after the purchase, and when you have problems with them).
I am sending back now an insta360 ONE RS which I found overheats from as early as 7 minutes ON THE MOTORCYCLE IN 5°C.
Other youtubers show overheating tests where cameras shut off much before your recorded times.
They are a scam, as far as I am concerned.

I just got a DJI Action 3 yesterday and put it to use straightaway at 4k/60. I shoot longform outdoor video (typically non-action, so low airflow), and was surprised and a bit disappointed that it did overheat after about 30 minutes of shooting. It was around 85 degF yesterday, though, so I'm sure that has a lot to do with it. Fortunately, I just had to wait a few minutes for it to cool off and then resumed shooting.

bro, let me tell you something which im surprised its not OBVIOUS to you:
the main reason why people buy action cameras is for long continuous video! on a bike or motor bike, car, or fishing.
in my case it will be for fishing primarily. I need that camera to able to record for 2-3h because I don't know when the fish will strike, and I will edit that very moment :)
If u wanna capture something nice or whatnot, an iPhone 13 Pro Max or Galaxy Ultra 23 are more than capable!
