I just spent 3 weeks in Thailand riding motorcycles all over the country. I was running a GoPro 10 and the Action 3 so while not a perfect comparison, the GP10 is still similar to the GP12. One of the big differences I found was transferring the video off the cameras. The DJI Mimo app transfers the videos directly into my camera roll while the GoPro Quik app has an extra step. This extra step also causes the GoPro to bloat the storage usage. The DJI MIMO app is also smarter and doesn’t cause you to have duplicates of your videos in your camera roll. Just another user experience benefit the DJI has over the GoPro.
This is EXACTLY why my next action camera is going to be DJI. GoPro is too busy trying the screw its users over by holding back on features and tech. The only reason I don’t have a DJI camera is because they weren’t out when I got my last GoPro.
Best thing I ever did you not replace my seized/broken 2 week old hero 10. Instead picked up the dji action 3. It hasn't missed a beat since I set it up!
I have always owned GoPros but this year I switched to the DJI Action 4. It’s a great action camera! Thanks for your great comparison of these cameras!
Same here! I always made myself suffer with GoPros INSANELY UNRELIABLE cameras thinking they were the "Best".. Boy am I glad to own a DJI action 4 now.. Just like their drones they have ROCK STEADY Reliability and are SO much simpler to use.. Now instead of cussing and fighting with my camera I just enjoy actually USING it!
Everything about GoPro the company, and their products is a huge turnoff for me. I have the Osmo Action 1, and have had ZERO problems with it. The UI, picture quality, and performance easily beats anything GoPro makes, or made. If I need another camera, I will buy the Osmo Action 4!! Thanks to your excellent reviews, I made the decision to buy the OA1!!😎👍
I did a lot of reserches (understand: "I watched a lot of YT videos... 😂😂😂) and I opted for the DJI Action 4 (since I own multiple DJI devices and that I'm really satisfied with there products and service) and I don't regret it at all. I wanted to upgrade to the GoPro 12 as soon as they contacted me to let me know it was available. But, after watching a few review video on here, and the camera's specs, I think the DJI action 4 out specs GoPro now, and I will probably go for this now instead. Nice review video as always !
The fact that GoPro completely removed GPS is a dealbreaker for me. Maybe they add it in the future with a remote as DJI did. Maybe something to test with the Action 4? How accurate the GPS is with the remote? 👍
Just discovered your Channel at a time when I was wondering if upgrading to Hero 12 from 9 was the right choice, but having had great experience with DJI including the Avata drone and wireless mic system you used in your video, I'm so glad I watched your informative video. Great comparison. Low-light is big for me with my filming tending to take place early in the day (before full sun). Thank you for your work on this video and overall recommendation from your personal experience - backed up with reasons why.
One thing that might be worth a mention is that if you were moving your GoPro from a chest harness to a helmet mount to a handlebar mount (and even back to a hand grip, like the Jaws or 3-Way 2.0), you wouldn't actually use the GoPro thumbscrew and fingers. The chest harness, helmet mount, and handlebar mounts all incorporate the GoPro quick release buckle system. It would likely be more useful to compare the DJI Action's quick release magnetic mount to this GoPro quick release buckle mount, NOT to the fixed fingers and thumbscrew mount. Certainly, moving the GoPro from mount to mount by unscrewing the thumb screw and screwing it back in is a lot slower and more fiddly than the Action's magnetic quick release. But, as I said, you wouldn't be using the thumb screw in those situations anyway. You'd be using the GoPro's quick release system. I suspect that the Action's magnetic quick release would still be faster than using the GoPro's quick release. However, my sense is that the GoPro's buckle system is considerably more reliable and stable. It also has the advantage of holding the GoPro lower, which might be an advantage for things like a helmet mount. The Action's magnetic mount raises the camera quite a bit higher, and that would place the camera much farther away from the helmet - sticking it out to the side. The GoPro's system keeps the camera much more flush with the helmet's surface. Also, the Action's magnetic quick release can only be attached in one direction. The camera can only face one way. The GoPro's quick release option allows the camera to be attached facing in either direction. It makes no difference which way you insert it. I think there are advantages and disadvantages to both quick release systems. One or the other might be preferable depending on how you use your cameras. But it should be noted that the GoPro's quick release system exists and it comes included with every GoPro camera. It's built into the GoPro accessory ecosystem.
Both these cameras seem to be full featured and take great video. Great comparison, you really covered almost everything in this video. I don't think you could go wrong with either one. The big con with the Hero 12 is you have to buy a pricey media mod to get great audio with it. And the Action 4 accepts high quality Mic's through its USB-C port. Thanks for sharing.
true but then if youŕe doing all day filming you cant have it plugged into a external battery at all. Which can be a deal breaker for those people that do extensive shooting in one day.
@@craigshandworld well now they released the mic 2 which connects wirelessly with the camera so you can have a good mic, move around and keep it plugged to a power bank
I'm looking to ditch my GoPro 10 for the Osmo because of ALL of the GoPro's v8-12 overheating issues making it totally unreliable...and you're making this easy! I pretty much don't have to sacrifice anything for the Osmo, except mount adapters and new battery sets. While you don't mention overheating at all, other videos show a HUGE difference where the Osmo simply doesn't overheat at all and the GoPro ALWAYS overheats under average room conditions, so again, thank you!!!
I have a GoPro 11 and while on a tour in a motorhome it kept overheating after about 30 to 40 minutes max. I also have DJI pocket mini 2 which is a brilliant little camera. Because of the mini 2 I am looking at going over to the DJI Action camera 4.
As a long time Hero 7 user, I was feeling the need to finally upgrade to something newer before taking a few summer road trips. My experience with the Hero 7 was never perfect. I actually purchased 2 cameras so that I could film in different scenarios without having to switch mounts. I almost exclusively use the quick record feature, and at times it would just simply not work for me at all. So I would miss some critical shots. Given my experience with these cameras, I decided to purchase an Action 3. My order actually took a few weeks to process/ship, and DJI announced the Action 4 while I was waiting, so I cancelled the OA3 and bought the OA4 instead, which arrived in a few days. So far I love it. The mounting system is superior, I only need one camera and can switch from a selfie stick to a magnetic mount or to a tri-pod within seconds. The quick record feature is super fast and works every time. The quick switch button is great, and the fact that I don't need any extra hardware for my external mic to work is just icing on the cake. DJI just simply offers a better user experience. If they can catch up to GoPro for image resolution, it's over. (though I have no issues with the image quality of the OA4 and have no need for 5.3K)
I only use DJI stuff. I just upgraded to DJ1 Action 4. I would say a good accurate review. I stay faithful to the DJI because It's not only a great piece, but I use DJI drones, DJI mics, and DJI Gimble, and I like everything matching.
The massive fail on the DJI no one talks about it is: if you want good audio and use external mics then the camera is entirely unusable. Remember, this is an action camera first and foremost and the USB mic connection simply isn't nearly stable enough like an 1/8 audio jack is. Try putting the DJI wireless mic receiver in the side and then biking down a mountain and see if it's still there at the bottom - it won't be. So as good as the action 4 is, if you want to use an external mic connected to it, then it's utterly unfit for purpose. Obvs you can just record separately and then sync later but this is a massive fail by DJI.
But if u are biking then u are close enough to the camera, don't need to use external mics. Anyway ur's still a good point, Dji should improve about that.
If you also purchase the DJI Pocket 3, the mic for the Pocket 3 also works wirelessly with the Action 4. No need to worry about any connections. Also, the mic with the Pocket 3 has internal recording, which allows unlimited distance between the mic and the camera.
Great review. One point I would make having owned 7 GOPROs, regardless of what you think of DJI/Insta (main competitors) the problem is this: GOPRO has experienced a huge shift in their customer service standards. Previously, as a subscriber they would honor the warranty and fix/replace. Currently, I have a GOPRO 10 that has experienced multiple bouts of failures resulting in complete data loss. I am still a subscriber and they have not fixed my issue, despite HOURS of phone calls to off shore customer service reps, nor responded to ANY emails I have sent. I am so disappointed with their customer service and the fact that they didn't honor the replacement standards they offer members.
Appreciate the video. I have a GoPro Hero 11 but the screen flickering is unbearable. GoPro recommended I buy a new one since it is out of warranty and experiencing a manufacturing defect so with that response I was researching the OSMO Action 4. Appreciate the information in your video.
Liked the video, it was more than just specs. Real world use cases and allowed me to determine that the Action 4 would be a better camera for me. Thanks
I still love using a gopro but just the fact that the changes have been so minimal since the Hero 9 is just very disappointing. I will be trying out the Action 4 this time and the fact that it has better low light capabilities is a W
Seems like Go Pro has been hanging on to its brand name and (subjective) better colors while DJI is actually improving the product through engineering. Just waiting for an device like an improved Action 2/Go Pro mini light enough to fly on my Avata that has a large sensor and improved color.
Thanks for sharing. Ive been using GoPro since day 1....BUT with the better lo light and abikity to connect a microphone receiver is exactly what I need.
I love my DJI gear and this is a great camera from built, hardware and functionality. I use them to help produce boating safety videos. Unfortunately there’s a flaw that also existed in the Action 3. Engine vibrations affect the horizon leveling when rigged directly to a boat and other motor vehicles. It has difficulty maintaining a level horizon, I believe the gyroscopes just don’t play well with the harmonics. That’s the one thing I find the GoPro does better, it maintains a level horizon when exposed to engine vibration. Unfortunately the GoPro dies in the Florida heat!
@FlytPath you can go through the (saved) video/photo settings if you press mode+power buttons at the same time. then just navigate with mode button and ok with the power button. its still not as good as a front-touchscreen but you can do „something“ so you dont need to remount your gopro all the time, like you told us in the video.
Excellent review and helped me determine which camera I'm going for, been let down in the past with gopro fails so that along with your review has sealed the deal for me DJI its gonna be 👍
Thank you for a great video! After watching this, I decided to go with the DJI Action 4 ! You now have a new subscriber. Please keep up the great work.
Bought and returned the DJI Action 4 the next day. Requires "Activation" from DJI. Why would a camera require activation? I understand a cellphone or drone but a camera? Called DJI and was told it was to keep track of active v. inactive cameras! Huh? I asked if they can deactivate a lost cameras to which the said yes. So this means users are being followed by DJI.
After I watched this video between GoPro Hero 12 VS DJI Osmo Action 4 and finally I was tempted to buy DJI Osmo Action 4. 👍. Greetings new subscriber from Indonesia. 🇮🇩🙏
I just acquired a DJI Action 4. Before I had the DJI 2. And I was using a lot timelapse and in the previous one, it was possible to save the individual file and this option is not more possible in the DJI4... I hope it will be an update coming with this possibility

I’m late , but thank you! Buying the DJI osmo 4 . That’s it .
Thanks for this. I've mainly been using 2 Gopro 9s to capture my ball games. For a camera that I wanted to use to record 2 hours straight it has been very unreliable and has a convoluted file naming system that that all the clips become out of sequence when adding to my editing system. How does the DJI file structuring work? Can it work with an external battery source? Previewing from phone simple to connect? Thanks again.
i hesitated to buy the GoPro 11 due to user interface issues, but i brought it anyways as the action 3 then didn't have the features of the GoPro, it was hell using the gopro for a one year long road trip, many bugs and glitches, like mic will often disconnect if use instant record, power button rip apart within 6 mths removing all waterproof features.. Osim action 4 seems to have solved these all, DJI FTW!
I’ve been subscribed for years to your channel. I just started researching this topic and found your review the most helpful. However you mentioned that the GoPro 12 eliminated GPS but you didn’t say if the DJI has GPS
Nice video. At timestamp 19:09 you mention low light is better on action 4, but on my display I'm watching this on, a C2 42" OLED, the GoPro12 looks better? I'm weighing purchasing one of these cameras for videos to film in home theaters, and low light is important to me.
Great review but honestly I use my GoPro 9 n my motorcycle in cinematic mode and also in photo linear mode and I like it. 🤷♂️🤷♂️ I do like the magnetic features on the action camera but really don’t see what I’m missing…
Studying the people who use these products, I came to the conclusion that no matter which of the two action cams you buy, you will always need at least 2 extra batteries, because neither of the 2 cameras will be able to last you long enough. The best of the cameras in terms of battery life is the DJI which at 4k60fps (the setting most people use) gives us about 90 minutes of recording time. In probably most situations this is more than enough, although there will be times when we will need more battery life. An example is on a trip, where we will be out of the hotel all day, touring a city and we will probably need more than 90 minutes of recording. What I am getting at with all this is that regardless of which camera you buy, you will always end up buying an extra battery pack to make sure you never run out of battery. Under this scenario, the DJI's advantage in terms of battery life over the GoPro is absolutely irrelevant. The same can be said for the fast charging of its batteries. Considering that we will always have an extra battery pack and that if we use a good battery bank the battery will probably be 100% charged again by the time the replacement battery is empty regardless of whether or not it was "fast" recharged, we can conclude that the speed of recharging the battery is, once again, irrelevant, especially considering that they are not large capacity batteries that cannot be recharged in 2 hours with a normal charger.
For me Go Pro 12 and their attachment system which is very safe in all kinds of conditions. The automatic transfer without manipulation to the cloud is very practical when traveling. My use of this type of camera is outdoors which does a very good job
So the mode gopro 12 calls full is in 8.7 ? and thats when you can easily edit the footage to be either wide or vertical right? It looks like action 4 does not have this and you still need to turn the camera sideways to shoot? Is this true?
Excellent video, thank you! I'm debating whether I was the Osmo Action 4 or the Osmo Pocket 3 creator. I'm looking to mount in my car and on my packback/chest for hiking but also as a camera that can be used for logging. What I like about the Osmo Pocket 3 is the gimbal and it's ability to track but I'm not sure how well it would do on a suction cup in my car. The Osmo Action 4 seems to be better suited for car mount and or biking. Thoughts anyone?
I have purchased both cameras - the mic that comes with the Pocket 3 Creator Package also works with the Action 4, wirelessly. The low light capability of the Pocket 3 will blow you away. Far better than any other small camera. The 1" sensor makes a load of difference in video quality.
My experience the GoPro still has superior video quality which is when you would think you would want from a video camera but everybody seems to love DJI for every other reason. hmmm
Thanks for sharing. With the Ulanzi magnetic adapter on GoPro, do you think GoPro can keep up with DJI Action 4 when talking about switching between different use cases?
I have the Go Pro 10 and want to add another action camera. Thinking about going with the action 4 for the low light and reliability. What do you think?

How strong is the magnet? If i mount it to , let say motorcycle helmet, it would fly off under high speed? 😅
The magnet is not as strong as that and besides I would recommend you to put a mounting on you helmet
Well done, that was the best video comparison between the two cameras.
Great! Now I'm planning to buy Go Pro 11 coz not only it record sharp 4k video but also it could take great picture.
It's really detailed and informative, much appreciated. I've just ordered the Action 4 so I'm sold.
i made good decision buying action 4. and it is really good camera
compare the sdk between gopro and dji... gopro has superb programmatic support
Advanced features. I don’t use so I probably won’t do a video.
Does DJI action 4 coms with unlimited cloud storage like GoPro does?
Get the Gopro if you want a camera that constantly freezes, overheats, and destroys your attempts to capture valuable moments.
Excellent video I want to choose one just for Solo RUclips podcasts which one do you recommend plz
i was interested with hero 12 ! but i think to buy the action 4 with no doubt... the hero 12 is not reliable...
does the DJI also overheat or freeze ?
For action 4 I bought a USB C mic which directly fits into my camera and works really good.
After I watched this video between GoPro Hero 12 VS DJI Osmo Action 4 and finally I was tempted to buy DJI Osmo Action 4. 👍. Greetings new subscriber from Indonesia. 🇮🇩🙏
I think it's finally time to upgrade from my Hero 4. I'm going with the DJI.
That’s it .
been extremely happy with my action 4!
Osim action 4 seems to have solved these all, DJI FTW!
the beginning of the end for gopro. well deserved :P
I’ve been subscribed for years to your channel. I just started researching this topic and found your review the most helpful. However you mentioned that the GoPro 12 eliminated GPS but you didn’t say if the DJI has GPS
Thanks for your long time support. Yes Dji has gps if u connect it to their remote control.
I’m done with GoPro. Same thing over and over. I just purchased DJI Action 4.
Nice video. At timestamp 19:09 you mention low light is better on action 4, but on my display I'm watching this on, a C2 42" OLED, the GoPro12 looks better? I'm weighing purchasing one of these cameras for videos to film in home theaters, and low light is important to me.
At timestamp 01:58 the GoPro12 is picking up extra color -- purple -- that isn't present on the Action 4?
Great review but honestly I use my GoPro 9 n my motorcycle in cinematic mode and also in photo linear mode and I like it. 🤷♂️🤷♂️ I do like the magnetic features on the action camera but really don’t see what I’m missing…
If you’re happy with the 9, you’re not missing anything.
Considering that we will always have an extra battery pack and that if we use a good battery bank the battery will probably be 100% charged again by the time the replacement battery is empty regardless of whether or not it was "fast" recharged, we can conclude that the speed of recharging the battery is, once again, irrelevant, especially considering that they are not large capacity batteries that cannot be recharged in 2 hours with a normal charger.
seeing so many moving to dji
Oboen both systems and I go with the GoPro just because of the colors. Big difference for me
i agree, the one thing i am asking is does the DJI also overheat? or freeze?
For me Go Pro 12 and their attachment system which is very safe in all kinds of conditions. The automatic transfer without manipulation to the cloud is very practical when traveling. My use of this type of camera is outdoors which does a very good job
Thanks for sharing
Everything I saw here puts Action 4 at the top spot … the audio was unbelievably better and that was without the mic system on it … crazy
So the mode gopro 12 calls full is in 8.7 ? and thats when you can easily edit the footage to be either wide or vertical right? It looks like action 4 does not have this and you still need to turn the camera sideways to shoot? Is this true?
Same question. Did you find the answer?
Incredible comparison video! I have the gopro 11 and osmo action 4. I'm really liking the dji more so far.
Great video!
Appreciate that Dan
DJI Action 4 is clear winner🙌
Great reviews!! THNX
The OA4 is in an entirely different dimension than the GPH12. I don't know what GoPro did, but they passed the crown onto DJI.
I've always had gopro and really only use on holiday underwater filming fish corals etc. Which one from these 2 would be better for me.
It is good to go with Action 4.
@@Manzoo I ended up getting both for slightly different reasons.
I have purchased both cameras - the mic that comes with the Pocket 3 Creator Package also works with the Action 4, wirelessly. The low light capability of the Pocket 3 will blow you away. Far better than any other small camera. The 1" sensor makes a load of difference in video quality.
My experience the GoPro still has superior video quality which is when you would think you would want from a video camera but everybody seems to love DJI for every other reason. hmmm
I had Gopro8, and I am now looking to buy gopro 12 or Action 4.
I want to try Action 4. because gopro gives me a hard time most of everything.
Thank you. Grate comparison
Glad it was helpful!
Just subscribed your channel. Thanks for the very detailed comparison of both camera!
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for sharing. With the Ulanzi magnetic adapter on GoPro, do you think GoPro can keep up with DJI Action 4 when talking about switching between different use cases?
The colour with Gopro is great, but i prefer action 4 well better!
Hi, what are those two mini tripods? Thanks.
great review, thanks mate
Great comparison. Thx!
Great review, thanks!
Is it possible to connect bluetooth mics to the DJI as well?
Great comparison!
Great comparison video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Do these 2 cameras have optical zoom? I want to buy an iPhone 15 Pro Max instead.
Digital zoom
How about using the cams for WEBCAM with usb? Are they good for this use or do they overheat?
So in the loop setting for 5 or 20 minutes. It will keep recording over & over the same 5 or 20 minute segment without filling the card?
I have the Go Pro 10 and want to add another action camera. Thinking about going with the action 4 for the low light and reliability. What do you think?
