Although Hahn has always played with unparalleled technique, I’ve always heard a criticism of hers being a lack of emotion. To them I point to this recording. Truly a shockingly wonderful performance.
To some, perfection is a flaw, or something false. But this is real. How is it possible to produce such a beautiful, musical, shimmering sound without fuss and without thrashing around? Well look at her hands. Especially her left hand. A simple, unflustered, perfect position on nearly every note. Everything is balanced, inch perfect, with amazingly efficient movements. No drama, no scratching, no over-playing, no ugly sounds. Just pure unadulterated direct musicality delivered with disarming simplicity that hides years and years of fantastic training and musical intelligence. Just watching and listening to her is worth a hundred lessons.
People always forget the technique of the right hand. That does the magic, her technique on her left hand is more of a tool. Hilary might be one of the best virtuosos today.
Incredible fire, tone, projection, stage presence, Intonation, interpretation, bow and finger technique, She is the world's best and shall go down in history as being just that. Her repertoire is profound and vast. I saw her last April in San Francisco and she is just stunning!
I just saw Hilary perform Dvorak’ s Am Concerto in Salt Lake City last night and it was outstanding. She is 6 or 7 months pregnant and looked radiant in a beautiful gown. She was given 4 standing ovations and said goodbye afterwards with a very cute wave to the capacity house. I said hello afterward in the lobby and she gave me her autograph. It’s only an illegible scribble but from from a magic hand and magical human being. Tomorrow she is off to Germany for more concerts!
Doctor: you have 26 mins left to live Me: *watches Hilary Hahn slay this concerto for 25 mins and 15 sec* *spends my last 45 secs crying because of how beautifully mesmerizing it was*
We, who really love classical music are very lucky, because in the last century and this one produced so many great talented artists than never before....and , of course, there is the internet, that makes easier for anybody and everybody to listen to it in the comfort of home for those , who would not be able to enjoy this fabulous violin play!...Thank you
Yes! And she equally enjoyed playing under him and with this group! He and the orchestra were outstanding, dead on with her through every accellerando, every ritardando, every nuance, and matching her enthusiasm and rhythmic quality.
Only when you learn to play this piece can you truly appreciate every bit of Hilary Hahn’s recording of this. No words. This was absolutely spectacular.
Hilary Hahn is incredibly gifted and she knows how to behave i.e. she has impeccable good manners ... her mother and father deserve great credit for nurturing her talent and producing a wonderfully rounded human being ... she should be the supreme role model for young girls and she is America's best living ambassador bar none (I am British) ... oh, and thank God for RUclips!
Arguably the greatest, most noble and lyrical violin concerto (and in g minor too) performed by today's most thoughtful, emotional and articulate violin soloist. Fortunate to have found this on RUclips. Bravo!
I had the distinct impression that there was mutual respect between the soloist and orchestra here. They're all on stage to do a job-and WHAT a fine job they made of this piece. It is wonderful-the best version I ever heard in my 60+ years of listening.Bravo everyone.!
The Frankfurt radio symphony orchestra is one of the finest I have ever heard. The musicians are totally focused on what they are doing, and how to improve what they are doing every day. This is a rare attitude even amongst the leading orchestras but inevitable if you want to stay at the top. So good luck to your father that he has this tremendous opportunity. And under Andrés Orozco-Estrada, the orchestra is climbing new heights with every project. So much love and passion for the best of all music!
A word for the conductor and the orchestra, both are magnificent here. As for Hilary Hahn, what to say ? she is amazing, as ever. Not only a great violonist, but a wonderful musician. Her pleasure to -- literally -- play with the orchestra is visible and our pleasure comes also from this marvelous alchemy. Thanks for posting this treasure.
This is what you need play to the friend who doesn't understand classical music. It has all the drama, pathos, delicacy, and power you could wish for... Watch Hilary Hahn as she communicates by glance with the conductor, see the perfect cooperation of orchestra, soloist, and conductor. And at the climax of the final movement, I'd swear Hahn practically levitates as she drives the music and her instrument right to edge, yet always remains in command. I don't understand how the audience can sit still - I'm literally on the edge of my seat, I'm so excited. Bravíssima!
My Dad was a bit of a tyrant. No need to go into it. He did a few things that are still with me: taught me to actually drive and trusted me where he would trust no one else. Drove me to excel at school (otherwise I would have been trapped at home) and introduced me to classical music.
This has to be one of the best ever performances of this incredible concerto. Whoever thinks Hilary Hahn is technically brilliant but plays without emotion - watch this and eat your heart out! I was in bits for most of and I've heard many recordings, ever since I was a child and my father, who was a violinist, would play early recordings and flood our house with its awesome power to stir the soul. Astonishing performance by all here.
I honestly never understand why some people dislike her playing because of a lack of emotion. Are they intimidated merely for the music being played almost perfectly? Are they confusing her music with her supposedly "robotic" stage presence? I will never get it. Each of her notes is full to the brim, to perfection of which I can bawl my eyes out, completely overwhelmed by the eargasm..., and people will go on to say that she sounds like a machine. Yes, if a machine can make me cry like a little bitch then I will take it over any human musician anyday
Hilary a “machine? No. The influence of the media harping on robotics and AI may be seeping into the zeitgeist. But these critics overlook her body language and subtleties that need no excessive facial expression. As a musician myself I see her capacity to concentrate on the music itself. Recently I read that we in this gory twenty first century have much to learn from 19th century composers like Bruch, like Mendelssohn. And it was finding Ms Hahn performing the Mendelssohn that awakened my core being. How can I keep writing folk-blues and rock and roll with the knowledge that a being as sublime as Hilary Hahn lives among us?
I once forwarded a youtube of HH performing the Mendelssohn to a sick friend who happens to be a side person in a well known Zydeco band down in bayou country. Seems it caused her to bemoan the style of “fiddle” she plays. That was not my intent.
Current Hilary is already a legend and so well deserved. Beyond magnificent. Brava. Flawless. We are watching the personification of human excellence and it is beautiful to watch and listen to. I am lucky to be alive to hear her play.
I’ve performed this song, playing clarinet, and heard many recordings and this is the first time I’ve heard the ascending crescendo at 21:07 as distinct triplets. With other performers It sounded like chop - chop - chop - chop. The Hillary Hahn effect is real.
Thanks - I went to a performance of this, this week, and I heard them too, I wouldn't have appreciated that if you hadn't mentioned it. (It was Maxim Vengerov)
One of my dear beloved uncles was a violinist! He always played Bruch when I was a little girl. Never forgotten and loved this performance. Greetings from Santiago, Chile !
Yes, the pinnacle Bruch--like climbing a mountain and finding it's not the fireworks but the amazing shades of completely nuanced and natural colourings, the sheer mastery of her vision of the whole that makes you utterly convinced that this is how it was meant to sound.
@Newsharp True, yes, Maxim looks a bit tense but I don't think Ray is better than Maxim. Smh. In the music world, I think you can't call anybody "better" than so and so. Also, we musicians always, almost, view everything in a biased manner when looking at music. In my human, biased opinion, that version of Maxim's Sibelious touches me so much. Maybe I am the biased one ;).For another example, I absolutely love hearing Ray's Mendolssohn Violin concerto and Sumina's too, but someone may critic it and say that it was too blunt and such. Also, Maxim was "young" at that time and has probably grown so much in experience and in knowledge. If you have seen the Menhuen competition master classes, A boy plays the Carmen Fantasies and actually, Vengerov tells the prodigy to relax. It's just my opinion and im not a violinist (oboist and pianist) so yea ;-)
So tender and fiery at the same time! I love this performance by Hilary Hahn the conductor and the orchestra! Every time I listen to it I get me chills. Bravo!!!
The great ones make it look so easy, and that's what's always impressed me about Hilary Hahn. She rips through those incredibly difficult fingerings looking like she's barely trying.
Which classical musician doesn't do this? Facial expression doesn't count btw. I believe this is one of those things were a lack of knowledge in the specific field creates some kind of almost superstitious belief. Sorry but I'm just putting this theory out there. Show me a counter example.
Pew TheBIind As a 35+ year musician myself, I can tell you without batting an eyelash that when you're "in the zone" you aren't one whit concerned about how people perceive your physical body, assuming you are well dressed and not gyrating uncontrollably.
David Floren Yes? ...so? Who claimed that? I didn't. He didn't. His claim was that "great ones" like Hilary play difficult stuff making it look easy. I claimed that anyone who plays difficult stuff well makes it look easy.
Pew TheBIind I wasn't making a new claim. I was just agreeing with and adding to your comment that facial expressions don't count. I did this to affirm your claim and to further your cause (i.e., educating the ignorant). As you may know, critiquing top musicians' physical movements (and their looks) is a big subgenre in the online classical music community. I'm more interested in hearing than seeing, so I wouldn't care if Ms. Hahn were dressed in tin foil and garbage bags and hanging upside down from a trapeze, as long as she were still able to produce the same audio output.
I love Hillary Hahn! There is something very special in her playing. I played 4th horn in that concerto in 1959. Carolla Glen was the soloist. I have loved that concerto ever sense and Hahn makes it sing as never before.
This is my definitive performance. Amazing that she played with such intensity, timbre, rubato, vibrato...everything is right. This piece not only touch my heart, but also my soul.
Agree, I personally enjoy this more than the Chung/Kempe or Jansen/Chailly recordings. Mostly because of Hahn's performance, of course, but also the orchestra has some really fantastic phrasing in the first movement.
22:08 You can see a dance between two happy people who are completely in the music, leading an incredible orchestra through one of the greatest concertos of all time
Wasn't a real fan of hers, until I heard this performance. So much more life in her playing than I remember. Perhaps I need to re-listen to her other performances.
i totally agree. she has become a lot better: when she was young it was mainly technique and style, now it is soul and technique. i still prefer batiashvili and janssen of todays violinists, but this is quite performance i have to admit!
Some pieces get boring when you hear them too often. Some pieces you need to hear many times to get them. But some pieces you just want to hear over and over again.
I'm sure you've heard that George Ligeti wrote a violin concerto not too long ago. How many times do you think you could stand to listen to that? I can't remember a single note of it.
I am in awe of Hilary Hahn, and all of the other musicians in the orchestra. Such beautiful music, so skilfully played by everyone. The unbelievable number of hours each member of the orchestra has had to practise to make their playing seem almost effortless, and magical! Thank you for putting this wonderful video on RUclips.
09:10 Adagio. BRAVO !!!!
Watching this magnificent performance while doing my crochet, but I had to stop and look and listen...... so this performance gives me goose bumps... it is so sublime and perfect that I’m in heaven: the orchestra, the conductor and her . She so angelical to play such awesome concerto. Thanks to life, Bruch for composing such an amazing piece of music, and God for giving me the opportunity to find this awesome composition in RUclips.
Hilary plays so well WITH the orchestra. There are passages where she's really immersing herself in that wall of sound behind her. And those charming eye exchanges with the conductor and the first violins. Had the great privilege of seeing and hearing her at the Barbican some years ago. I think it was the Britten concerto. She even threw in some exquisite Bach at the end as an encore. If my memory serves me well, she was standing in (at very short notice) for Lisa Batiashvilla. Hard to image Hilary standing in for ANYONE! Wonderful artist :-)
I like the way she moves. There is passion in it. Her face may be stony with focus. There's passion there though. The darting eyes, the glances at the other musos, the millisecond smile when she nails a difficult spot ... yes, passion ... lots of it. I see a wild Romanian gypsy when she plays Bach's Gigue.
You can see how she feels the music as if it speaks to her. She smiles, rolls her eyes, frowns, smirks and more and if you switched off you audio you could still follow the emotion of the piece just through these expressions.
The POWER and beauty of that orchestral return around 6:20 after Hahn's performance gets you so focused on her magnificent, sumptuous virtuosity. My favorite moment in a performance full of favorite moments. This is definitely the best recording/video of this Bruch concerto that I've heard. Hahn's execution throughout is (as always for her) masterful and inspiring, don't get me wrong; but the orchestra is equally on-point here and that's what makes this the gold standard performance.
I love the way she pulls you into the performance. This isn't just about listening and watching, somehow she allows me to 'feel' what she is playing. A wonderful performer, totally enganging and absolutely mesmerising. And, of course, supported by a first class orchestra and conductor! 💜
Hahn's playing is just astonishing.. incredibly accurate, AND incredibly moving. And my compliments to the entire Frankfurt Radio Symphony. This orchestra is world class!
I've been listening to that concerto for over forty years, but watching that performance was like hearing it for the first time. An astonishing interpretation! bravo and encore! 💐💐💐
Velmi, velmi děkuji za nahrávku, je radost poslouchat brilantní podání všech, samozřejmě sólistky, jsem uchvácena radostí, s jakou ten koncert všichni hrají a evidentně si ho užívají. Je to vidět a slyšet.
Ms. Hahn is already a legend in her own right, but what never ceases to amaze and awe me, is how in the 18th century a man could compose such a piece, harmonizing a few dozen instruments in such a majestic fashion. 06:20 still moves me to tears every time I hear it.
Dokonalé, ona mi připomíná Janu Preissovou v roli baletky v sérii filmů s malým Tomášem Holým o tatínkovi a polepšovně.
I have the same problem. They say classical music helps you study, but it has the opposite effect for me 😂 I love this piece and Hahn's interpretation so much!
Just unbelievable. She is so good! Effortless, powerful, beautiful playing. Perfection. A true powerhouse and master of the instrument. You’re great Hilary!
Hahn/Bruch. A perfect partnership of hands and fingers playing the violin 🎻 and the creativity of Max Bruch.....an unbeatable combination plus the orchestra presenting with a delicate sensitivity. Bravo 👏 to all of you!

Amen to that! 🎻💙
fingerhorn4: Beautifully said. 🎻
People always forget the technique of the right hand. That does the magic, her technique on her left hand is more of a tool. Hilary might be one of the best virtuosos today.
copybook perfection executed with such apparent ease... G Ire
Incredible fire, tone, projection, stage presence, Intonation, interpretation, bow and finger technique,
She is the world's best and shall go down in history as being just that. Her repertoire is profound and vast. I saw her last April in San Francisco and she is just stunning!
I thoroughly agree, Hilary's Mendelssohn Violin concerto in e Op64 with FRSO is totally seminal. Beyond flawless. Awesome, is an understatement.
Tomorrow she is off to Germany for more concerts!
i saw her when she was a kid of 13 in baltimore. she had it then like she has it now.
She's good. Check out joshua bells cover of this piece

Doctor: you have 26 mins left to live
Me: *watches Hilary Hahn slay this concerto for 25 mins and 15 sec*
*spends my last 45 secs crying because of how beautifully mesmerizing it was*
I would spend the 45 seconds trying to load this up on my poopy Android phone then cry during the performance near the end for efficiency. 😭
After listening to this, I would live some more. Perhaps the doctor did not know about this medicine.
without hesitation yes! 🤩
The last 26 mins surely come someday in your life. Then you can enjoy Hillary's Bruch again. But I hope you would live 99 years.

That was at true gift thank you Oct 2024😅
Her articulation and bowing is almost like a mathematical perfection.
She's loving it because the orchestra is matching her pace so perfectly! One of the best performances of all time!
The small details like that vibrato on 2:24 and the rasp on 2:37 just makes it for me the best 1st movement of this piece I've ever heard
I completely agree. I’m currently learning the first movement and she makes it sound so much easier than it is. Just a wonderful piece of art.
Idk why but it reminds me of the Dvorak violin concerto a little
Rarely do you see a violinist become one with their violin, stunning, beautiful performance
You are right, she makes a violin sing.
You can tell also how the conductor is responding with enthusiasm to her playing. How he absolutely enjoys playing with her.
Nonsense.

Bravo!
My dad is playing in that orchestra
I had the distinct impression that there was mutual respect between the soloist and orchestra here. They're all on stage to do a job-and WHAT a fine job they made of this piece. It is wonderful-the best version I ever heard in my 60+ years of listening.Bravo everyone.!
congrats bro ......they are very good !..........
How nice!!! Congrats!! What a strange coincidence! My cousin used to play there and then he moved up - Vienna Philharmonic now.
@@bjorndyno2175 This orchestra is probably connected to heaven.
Each note is rich with energy and precision, masterful!
Bravíssima!
One of the best concertos ever written, performed by one of the bests violinists ever. A perfect match.
Yep, sounds like a machine. All technique...
@@grabsmenchew don’t say eargasm now I’m revolted
I once forwarded a youtube of HH performing the Mendelssohn to a sick friend who happens to be a side person in a well known
Zydeco band down in bayou country. Seems it caused her to bemoan the style of “fiddle” she plays. That was not my intent.
She is excellent , she does not play, she enjoys and lives it. She conducts the orchestra with her head as well !!

Yes, the pinnacle Bruch--like climbing a mountain and finding it's not the fireworks but the amazing shades of completely nuanced and natural colourings, the sheer mastery of her vision of the whole that makes you utterly convinced that this is how it was meant to sound.
Well said! I would have had trouble finding the words, but you have it exactly right. Many thanks!

@Newsharp Listen sibelius concerto of maxim vengerov
Newsharp Hilary Hahn’s Sibelius is better than Ray’s.

David Floren
Yes?
Alright.
I love Hillary Hahn! There is something very special in her playing. I played 4th horn in that concerto in 1959. Carolla Glen was the soloist. I have loved that concerto ever sense and Hahn makes it sing as never before.
watching the orchestra members and soloist smiling at each other during and at the end on mutual admiration and respect is so uplifting
It goes without saying that Hahn did brilliantly, but the orchestra is wonderful too! Amazing expression. Great collaboration!
You must hear Maria Duenes play this!, Very exciting!!!!
She is definitely out of this world, but the conductor and the orchestra contribute to this exceptional performance. I can feel the exitement!

Have you heard her Chostakovitch concerto ?
Perhaps becoming a mother has added something to her playing- it certainly hasn't detracted from it!
i totally agree. she has become a lot better: when she was young it was mainly technique and style, now it is soul and technique. i still prefer batiashvili and janssen of todays violinists, but this is quite performance i have to admit!
I'm sure she'll be glad to know that you're now a "real fan" - her life was probably incomplete until she knew it. Wow - thank you for completing her.

Hilary Hahn plays impeccably such concertos like they are the great, passionate love songs that they are. She's a world treasure.
Brilliant performance by Hilary Hahn and the orchestra which was so in accord with her interpretation.
For Hilary, there are no difficult spots in the Bruch. Those smiles are communication with the conductor.

The way she plays the violin is a miracle.
That crazy accelerando lets the orchestra enter at the exact right tempo. And the dynamic - perfect.

Dokonalé, ona mi připomíná Janu Preissovou v roli baletky v sérii filmů s malým Tomášem Holým o tatínkovi a polepšovně.
