- Only 18 years old, Spanish violinist María Dueñas is a rising star on the world's concert stages. In March 2021 she made her debut with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra, performing Max Bruch's famous Violin Concerto No. 1 under the baton of Manfred Honeck.

This girl is like a storm on the stage, nothing seen before in many years, maybe since the young Vengerov. Undoubtely the violin star of the century!
Give it another 5 years and she will become the young Vengerov, but different. I have not seen anything like this, ever. Not just her impeccable technique (which im sure she worked very very hard for), but there's also something very natural, very innate about her music that's hard to describe with words. You dont usually see this in other prodigies

You can tell her violinistic approches and musical ideas are not always in the style of her teacher whom she adores and respects. But fortunatelly her personality imposes. For me she is like the María Callas of the violin.

I saw her on April 15, 2024 in Oviedo, Spain. As soon as she started playing I nearly had a heart attack. If my heart can withstand this, I have a small chance of living 100 years.

She gives this piece so much musical personality and it suits her so well. The music flows, it's gorgeous.
It can be tough for young players to take on the concertos everyone has heard hundreds of times and it is wonderful to hear it be her own.

¡Exquisito! María toca con sensibilidad, pasión y amor como Max Bruch tiene que haber pedido. Tiene también la marca individual que falta en la mayoría de los artistas. Incomparable. Existen otros ensayos excepcionales pero es posible que no existe mejor, solo unos pocos de igual calidad pero diferentes. Por fin ha venido una artista del violín que quiero seguir.
Just stumbled across this absolute gem of a performance. The soloist and the orchestra were both truly inspired and brought a freshness and intensity to this work that is remarkable. And the performance of the 5th caprice was unlike any I have heard and brought a new depth to the work.
She is the most confident young violinist that I've seen. And there's a reason for her confidence - she's in complete command of her instrument and of the music, and knows exactly what she's doing. And of course she's doing it remarkably well! I wonder if Paganini ever played that caprice better himself?

Eine phantastisch gefühlvolle Geigerin und unter der kundigen Stabführung des Vorarlbergers Manfred Honeck kann auch trotz ihrer drängenden Jugend nichts passieren! Im Ganzen eine runde Darbietung des gesamten Klangkörpers: Absolut vergnüglich für den Zuhörer aus Österreich!
Im "Encore" hat Paganini die Spanierin in ihr zum Vorschein gebracht! Mitreissend!
Mit Paganinis 1. Violinkonzert hat sie bereits vor einem Jahr einen Beweis ihres überragenden technischen Könnens geliefert. Genial!

She plays beautifully. Mundane comment: I am so glad she wears flats on stage. They look great and allow her to move freely. Artists need not wear painful heels to look great on stage.
And a dress with straps. I find strapless unattractive in general but especially for violinists who have their arms raised playing and always look like the dress is about to fall off.

Another rising star! we do need them as the greats are now heading into the sunset. This young lady shows all the promise of joining the great virtuoso;s of the world .
This piece is so well known that performances can seem routine and hackneyed, but Maria Dueñas plays it with total freshness and individuality. The orchestra and conductor likewise seem to be enjoying the music afresh and bringing out extra insights. All in all, a lively and compelling performance - the most I have enjoyed this piece for many years!

One of the best playing of the Bruch I've ever heard, precise and such sweet high notes. The filming is also perfectly balanced between and wide and close up.
Okay. You're definitely my guy. Can you please tell me what made this performance better than other already well-known (and recent) Bruch performances? Like, can you mark specific moments where she played it in some way that makes it exceptional?

@@dingbaaat5569 I will admit there was incredible synchronization at that moment between her and the orchestra, almost like only two separate instruments instead of dozens. And that is present throughout in other moments. I've seen soloists who do not have that kind of almost "collective" consciousness with the orchestra, even great soloists, and it's always hard to watch/listen to.

She is extraordinary from the first notes. She makes you feel that you are in strong hands.
A fiery concert and a fiery fantastic young violinist: a challenge for orchestra and conductor.
Being a violinist myself I found it beautiful how, seconds before playing again, she quickly adjusts the violin on her shoulder and puts her hand and fingers in position and soon after her face breaks into a smile that reveals all her immense pleasure with the music she performs 22:44 .
When I was young in the 1970's I thought no one could play this concerto better than Heifetz, but in recent decades many new violinists have enchanted the world with astounding genius.
And after that beautiful concert, she still finds the breath and courage to play Paganini's caprice n5 with total virtuosity in front of the orchestra, an attitude that demonstrates all the confidence of a concert performer who came to make history.
Oh my gosh! she's brillant!
Exceptional. What an inner power and how easily she transform every passage into expressive, meaningful music. She plays so well that the listener feels like she only says to the instrument "go, sing!"

The Paganini is the most overwhelming interpretation I have ever experience. I wonder how an MRI will look like if it can be done while she is playing the piece. A new star indeed.

Ich bin im Himmel, Orchestra is amazing & engaged in perfect balance with the soloist and equally as breath-taking in performance as this young master, I have heard this by many virtuosos, but Ms. Deunas' opening of this piece is uniquely brilliant and sets the tone for her mesmerizing wonder till the end! I wish I could visit Hamburg one day and experience NDR in real life, I hope one day!

This is one of those moments that cannot be surpassed. The video crew did a great job capturing this from the perfect angle.
