What’d you think of them? I love all of them including Gamera The Brave. I love the heisei trilogy but they switched up so much of Gameras backstory. At least the movies were awesome though. But for me the showa series will always be the best. The classics.
Gamera is always something I've heard of but I've never seen it before. I had no idea that weird joke in one of the early episodes of Dragon Ball with Master Roshi's flying turtle was a Gamera reference.
The title “friend to children” loses some cachet when said child requires constant supervision due to a complete lack of any self-preservation instinct. That said, I adore the end of this film: how do you dispose of a colossal turtle? A giant pokeball MOUNTED ON A GIANT ROCKET! It’s so absurd and out of nowhere it puts a smile on my face every time. I’m surprised the dig against Godzilla wasn’t mentioned. Gamera walks straight through the power line/electric fence that gave Toho’s monster trouble.
YES when I was watching it, I kept thinking, Why aren't they just saying what Plan Z actually is?? Then I realized it's so, so much better just to see it unfold and go... DAFUQ??? Brilliant, just wonderful choices
I love how we live in a world where you can use a term like "Yamane-esque" and probably each and every one of your 21K subscribers will know exactly what you mean. Amazing time to be a kaiju fan.
As a young child, I saw Gamera vs Gaos on the old UHF channels in the 70's. You remember those channels, the ones you had to wrap tin foil around the "Rabbit Ears" to even try to get in clear.
I honestly think he could work in the monsterverse. They kinda set up an Atlantis-esque civilization in KOTM, it reminded me a bit of the Hesei trilogy.
@@andreiiiksavvv6054 I am aware of that. My question is derived from the fact that Godzilla is a primordial, atomic breath spewing creature that feeds on radiation, has a burning mode, and killed a similarly powerful three headed, hurricane creating three-headed dragon from SPACE that breathes lighting-like energy that flat out atomized an entire air force. And Kong is... an ape with no special abilities other than being large and agile for his size. Even if he can hold his own, having that be the main event instead of Ghidorah I'm afraid will make the movie really underwhelming. Also, unless I'm wrong, didn't Kong in the original KKvG have some power over electricity?
As a huge fan of Gamera with him being my favorite kaiju, I'm so happy you're doing a review series on all his movies. It'll really bring attention to the guy that may help to spawn something new.
Honestly surprised you didn’t give it 5 stars. This is a legendary movie. I respect your critiques tho. Gamera has always been one of my favorite Kaiju ever.
For real though, I just discovered this channel and have been going through many of your content and funnily happen to watch this new upload. Keep up the good kaiju movie reviews
So sorry you missed out on this as a kid. This was the 3rd Kaiju film I ever saw after, Godzilla 1985 (my 1st), the original, Gojilla, then this. All when I was 8/9. It changed my life forever.
@Up From The Depths I can't believe you don't have more subscribers because the quality of your content is just out of this world man loves ya and have a pleasant morning.😁
Discovered your channel after watching King of the Monsters and Shin Godzilla. You’re reviews are top notch man! You go more in depth than most Godzilla and Kaiju channels. Heck you did better than The Angry Video Game nerds Godzillathon! You just earned yourself a new subscriber! Keep up the good work.

Crazy you’ve only gotten through the Godzilla films.. so many Kaiju/ Monster movies/ and creature features to review!! Excited for the future. I’d definitely be curious on your opinion on the Mothra Rebirth trilogy since it was “Heisei” era (that being your favorite era) but they aren’t good films.
Great movie. Great video. Few months ago i bought Guardian of the universe-attack of the Legion-revenge of Iris BluRay and i cant wait for your take on those movies. Keep up great work :)
As kaijunoir once stated (not word for word) the reason why gamera saved toshio at the lighthouse is probably the same reason why we save certain bugs how we stick out for some but will also kill hundreds
I always though it was weird how the movie was shot in black and white in 1965 which by then Godzilla had already transitioned into full color from that point onwards
Daiei had what they called A and B pictures at the time. A pictures were given a larger budget as well as being shot in color, color film is expensive man. B pictures were given less to work with and shot in black and white for the most part as far as i know. Gamera proved to be incredibly successful despite all this and as a result gamera vs barugon was then made an A production.
More please? I like your reviews on old kaiju movies. I just bought a Godzilla DVD collection on eBay and a Gamera dvd box set. I would like to start a kaiju film collection but don’t know any other kaijus other than Godzilla, Mothra, Rodan (and all the other kaijus in the Godzilla franchise) and Gamera. Other than that. I’m drawing a blank and would love to see some films that don’t get enough attention or credit.
The irony is that Toshio (or Kenny, as so man of us Westerners know him) is the very thing which makes this first Gamera movie distinct.Remove him, and you have a bog-standard Kaiju film that's just blatantly ripping-off Godzilla. Retain him, and you have an element that sets the movie apart.
Well man, u did it! You made another amazing monster movie review, I hope to do a collaboration with ya in the future. Anyways, keep up the good work man, btw, you’re inspiring me to make my own review on monster movies.
A clip of This film is actually shown on an episode of “Mad Men” (5 season l believe) with don draper killing some time at a matinee show and actually saying “hey, this is pretty good!”
I've always loved Gamera because of the memories of my mom watching the films with me, Godzilla too I suppose, but when I think of Gamera I think of my mom.
MST3K introduced me to Gamera way back around 1991 I want to say? I could be wrong. It's actually how my mom and I found MST3K. We were flipping through channels and we were always fans of the Japanese monster movies, so when we came across something that looked like that, we'd stop and watch. Then we heard "Shut up Kenny" come seemingly out of nowhere, and that's when we saw the silhouettes at the bottom and became hooked on that show. I always had a soft spot for the Gamera movies after that.
The title card should have been called gamera the giant turtle and also this film along side gamera vs barugon 1966 are the best gamera films in my opinion (except the Kenny scenes) Edit: i also love the third film of the Showa gamera franchise
I just watched this movie last weekend by sheer coincidence. I had to watch it dubbed to English, though. Where do you get the japanese/ subtitled versions?
All eight films are available on Blu-ray from Mill Creek in the original Japanese with subtitles in two sets. tinyurl.com/yyjxaskb tinyurl.com/yxd58hyd Extremely underwhelming video and audio quality, but better than DVD at least...
I loved the 1st three Gamera films. Didn't care much for the films that followed. They basically lost me at *Gamera Vs. Guiron.* But I didn't hesitate to pick up the 90's and millennial Gamera DVD's when they came out. I wasn't crazy about *Gamera The Brave,* but I loved the Heisei Gamera trilogy.
Gamera is a turtle version of Godzilla, not like a copycat he’s just a turtle last fire power is spans like a saucer camera is cool are used to watch does as my childhood I couldn’t find as much videos back in the day like Godzilla but when I finally found it I was in middle school
1-2-3 Cry! 1-2-3 Cry! Yeah I dunno the first Gamera is kinda boring and it REALLY doesn't help since it's torn between the serious monster film and the kid insisting he's a good monster. I mean I sometimes wonder if the boy is supposed to actually be crazy or something. That said I wish I was there when it was released since I bet I would have been floored by the flying saucer twist. Godzilla certainly can't do that. Now on Barugon! God I love that one! I remember as a kid so many visuals from it stuck with me for so long until I got to see it again in high school and still really enjoyed it.
Gamera is interesting. Just as strange as all Kaiju, but the biggest issue is simple, he's a Turtle, so his costume always has dumb legs and arms, which always made him look dumb (yes, Godzilla looks dumb as well, but 10x better). The films just weren't made right, with an annoying 'Kenny' yelling his name, to corny villains and absurd stories. Always made for young children, then they should've had Gamera on screen for a majority of the film. I've seen every film, and only Gamera the Brave in English, maybe that's what ruins it for me, since I don't speak Japanese and trying to watch and read 11 films takes you out of the fun. I do love watching reviews of the films, whether here Up From The Depths or Cinemassacre, but the best, Brandon Tenold with his Cult Movie Reviews. Hopefully they'll let maybe Legendary Studios (Godzilla 2014) remake it and make him awesome again.
You have really good reviews about the monster movies tho the child should be called the Kenny because sometimes the Kenny's in the movies are annoying
I also haven't seen most of the gamera movies, so ill use this opportunity to dive in as well
What’d you think of them? I love all of them including Gamera The Brave. I love the heisei trilogy but they switched up so much of Gameras backstory. At least the movies were awesome though. But for me the showa series will always be the best. The classics.

Gamera is friend to all children but mortal enemy to all dancing hippies.
Was thinking exactly the same when that scene happened😂
Great videos man, looking forward to the rest of Gamera's reviews, seems to be pretty underrated in North America
tell it animated!
Do a gamera evolution
Yo tell it animated can you mak a gamera evelution animated
Do a gamera evolution man!
Please, make gamera's evolution!
The Gamera-thon has begun.

Ah yes! The gamera review series has started!

Everytime I see an upload from you it is like a mini christmas. Thanks for putting in such hard work into these videos.
This is my fav channel on RUclips, keep up the great work man. Love yha❤️

Wish list for the future of the Monsterverse. Their own version of Gamera in his own solo film, followed afterwards by a Gamera vs Godzilla film.
I honestly think he could work in the monsterverse. They kinda set up an Atlantis-esque civilization in KOTM, it reminded me a bit of the Hesei trilogy.
I am more looking forward to that pipedream than Godzilla vs Kong. Because seriously, how could Kong win even if he got bigger?
@@FlyingFocs bigger, stonger smarter etc. GvK takes place 40 years after kong skull island. Also kong won last time

I just feel like, in terms of how royally hosed you see a city get, this movie is just like
"how much of the city should he destroy?"
"yes"
Gamera is a classic and the more recent ones from the 90’s/2000’s were really good, too. I wish I had more items of him in my collection

Review every episode of Hannah-Barberra Godzilla and/or Godzilla the Animated Series afterwards?
Honestly surprised you didn’t give it 5 stars. This is a legendary movie. I respect your critiques tho. Gamera has always been one of my favorite Kaiju ever.
OH NO.... A KENNY!
This fucking movie
I think we can all agree that Gamera is truly awesome.
This was without a doubt one the best Kaiju movies of that time, and it is still an amazing work of art to this day.

Damn Kenny's. This is the movie that introduce this menace that is rarely done right, with the only good one being the one fro brave.
Gamera is definitely a very interesting kaiju - seriously, a flying turtle that breathes fire isn't something you see in movies too often.
I cannot wait till he eventually makes his way to super monster😂
You are maybe on of the best movie reviewers I watch I always enjoy your videos keep up the great work😊
I can't wait for more! Love your reviews/retrospectives.
This film wasn’t intended to be child-friendly. The friend to all children wasn’t a thought until after Gamera vs Gyaos.
@Up From The Depths I can't believe you don't have more subscribers because the quality of your content is just out of this world man loves ya and have a pleasant morning.😁
Quickly got addicted to this channel's Godzilla reviews, then I found out you also cover Gamera: HELL YEAH!
People thought that movie was a rip-off Godzilla but when they saw Gamera flying, they found out this was a worthy rival of Godzilla.

OMG Gamera’s inspiration made me laugh!
New Kaijū fan. Thanks for taking time to make this great content, favorite channel at the moment.
One of the best Kaijus next to Godzilla. I hope he has a revival akin to Shin Godzilla and the new Ultraman.
