I appreciate the Gamera coverage. I never really gave Gamera a chance because of all the little kids (Kennys) in it.
Gamera has always been my favorite, I do love his inclusion on your channel while we wait for more Godzilla action. While they are talking about Godzilla vs King Kong, many of us are still praying to the monster Lords for some G vs G action.
You by far do the most in depth and dare I say the most unbiased studies into this amazing genre of film. Thanks
You are doing a good job. Can't wait until you get to the Heisei Trilogy though. That's where Gamera shines! :)
I sure am glad that protecting the Expo was a higher priority than protecting Japan.
Japan can be rebuilt, the Expo 70 is a one time event! Clearly their priorities are in order.

Great to see this film get its proper praises! Its a shame Gamera vs Jiger is as overlooked as it is.
It might be because MST3K never riffed on it. At least it's not in the box set I own. But it's easily one of the best in the classic series.

This one actually frightened me when I first saw it as a little kid (Jiger skeletonizes people! And stabs Gamera with a spike that paralyses him and makes a tiny Jiger grow inside of him!) It's also the earliest Gamera movie I can remember seeing, and I never watched it again until I bought it on DVD. I think that there must be a time difference of like 25-30 years between me seeing for the first and second times.

Gamera needs to join the monsterverse
Oh boy! I re-watched this along with Gyaos and Guiron last week and I feel like it's the last hurrah of Showa Gamera. Back to scary Earth monster, no aliens so it's in the vein of Gyaos and Barugon. Jiger is a neat monster though her being able to fly is soooo weird. But I like that. Actually what's really cool is that every time Gamera fights her I get the impression he's stronger than her but she has so many tricks and powers that she's able to beat him two times.
I think it's the best blend of humor too. Such as the ship's doctor starting to think the crew really is cursed and the captain is like 'hey c'mon now! You're a man of science!' Doctor nods but when the captain walks off he takes a sip of liquor. Or how the submarine inventor is like a secret Gamera fan.
I thought the submarine adventure into Gamera was pretty neat too.
One thing I STILL don't get out of it his how Gamera putting power line poles into his ears doesn't hurt him from Jiger's ray. Like...that's a ray that seems to burn stuff up right?
Oh I wince every time I see Gamera get his limbs impaled by Jiger and he can't pull his limbs in! Okay time to watch the review.
I knew this for years as "Gamera vs. Monster X". Love it! Yes, there is that "Fantastic Voyage" ripoff, but watching this as a child, I could have cared less. I thought those scenes were so neat!

I watched it on ‘Dialing for Dollars’ as a child! That’s been a while back...
Definitely one of the best entries after the original, the scene in which gamera takes that long walk after being stung is not only one of the best kaju
Scenes ever filmed but showed off how big one those sets actually are and how much detail is put into the buildings, bridges etc one of my fondest
memories of this film. Great review!

@@RiainRamblez Yes, but a Fantastic Voyage plot requires EXPLORATION of the insides, while GMK uses that submarine being swallowed in a very different manner. Admiral Tachibana fires a drill into Godzilla to open up a wound, which then allows him to escape and leads to Godzilla's destruction. At no point does Tachibana explore Godzilla's interior the way a Fantastic Voyage plot requires.

I was always confused why Gamera's roar was cut short throughout the film.
What I find striking about this movie is the fact that Jiger is female. So many others have been male kaiju, so Jiger is a welcome change-it even uses its own (ahem) reproductive ability to fight and subdue Gamera, which is definitely different than a walking knife with throwing stars.
If only they hadn't gotten so close to the Expo...
Eventhough everything went downhill after Gamera vs Gyaos, this movie might be the exception. The bigger budget certainly hepled this one, but the kids remain a problem. Still the Kaiju action is rewarding, which is the main reason most people watch this movie anyway, and Jigger, who initially doesn't look like much, turns out to be probably Gamera's most deadly foe. I give this one 3.5 out of 5 stars.

I liked this one. Big upgrade over Viras and Guiron, and the last good Gamera movie for *many* years.
Is Jiger a herbivore? I ask because she seems to really like grass.
Well it was my first gamera film. Saw it on local tv back in 1986 or 1987. Was wondering why I never saw it in the video store for the longest time but ofcourse sandy frank didn't license this one. So had to wait till the 2000s to see it again.
This means your next review is... Gamera vs. Zigra. You poor sap.

@@UpFromTheDepths88 I already do. If it's any consolation, you have my sympathies. But look at it this way, this means you're a little bit closer to reviewing the Kaneko Trilogy! Hopefully, this will bolster your spirits to a degree.
I really liked the design of Jiger. It was alright
I wholeheartly agree with this review: Gamera vs Jigger is much better than Gamera vs Viras, Guiron as well as vs Zigra. I would put it on the same level as vs Gyaos maybe. Not only is the story a welcome change from the "kids get kidnapped by alien invaders with a big monster" nonsense , it is also very creative. Barugon is still better than this though.
Jiger as a quadruped is actually pretty great, yeah. Is it even a costume, or a puppet? If there is a person in that, then do they have stilts for the forelegs? I'd like to see what's in that thing.

Childhood movie.
Gamera movies seem to have a multi-cultural cast of children characters. The studio really geared these for kids. Not a bad thing at all.
The only thing that confused me in a recent re-watch of this one. That one tower building that keeps being seen, the Tower of the Sun? Isn't that supposed to turn into a giant Kaiju fighting robot? I mean the real one does... doesn't it? Bandai wouldn't lie to me... twice?

iris is the Gezora equivalent
Gyaos is the Rodan equivalent
Finally Gamera is the.....

Oh I DO stand corrected! This movie does have some stock footage but it's used better. They used stock footage from previous Gamera movies but played them during the opening credits. Okay fine with me. The other is they used footage of police and people hunkered down in shelters from Gamera vs. Barugon...that's it! Waaaay better than Viras and a million times better than Super Monster.
In my opinion Gamera, Gamera vs Barugon,Gamera vs gyaos, and Gamera vs Jiger were the best Showa Gamera films
And this is when Gamera learned to not accept dates on monster tinder.
I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention the rather infamous "documentary" footage of parasitic worms being surgically removed from an elephant's trunk.
Gamera Vs Jiger was definitely my favorite when I was a kid ... it's still my favorite 'old school' Gamera movie ..!
Also it's a great loooooong shot of Gamera stumbling towards the water after Jiger lays a baby into him.
That's a great shot, that's when I knew this wasn't as cheap as Viras or Guiron.

This was always one of my favorite sci fi movies as a kid. Plus Jiger has one of the all time great kaiju roars. It’s so mean and obnoxious.

Remember that part in Super Monster where a poster for Dogzilla gets destroyed? Wow Daiei really stuck it to Toho...Dogzilla is like calling Godzilla a dog...yeah...wow that was harsh...yeah Super Monster is waaaay better than Godzilla's Revenge. Yep...Super Monster...the Gamera movie where there's only two minutes of new Gamera footage stuck it to those assholes at Toho...yep...

Barugon and Jiger are two great imaginative beasts dreamed up from the depths of Hell. The big G himself would be hard pressed in winning against them.
Hell Gyaos would have given Godzilla a hard time.
I have Heisei Gyaos murdering every Godzilla aside from Shin and Earth. Hell I even have a full flock taking them out too.

@@joshchiang5995 I don't think Burning G is fast enough and Final Goji Always tries to over power first while Gyaos goes for the kill right away.

Wow surprised by the rating. I figured it'd a nice three star film. I'm protective of Guiron and Jiger a bit when people say after Gyaos all the Showa Gamera movies suck. Guiron for being crazy and Jiger for being the most like the first three movies...well okay Barugon is a league above the rest.
It's a low four star film. I almost gave it three but I gave the original Gamera three stars and I found Jiger way more entertaining.

You know, this makes me wonder how much diseases and parasites gamera probably has.....
The elephant's trunk scene gave me horrible nightmares as a child.

I watch it, but I still avoid it.
For me, watching the Japanese versions of these films, the kids never really bother me. The English versions though, not so much.. for some reason English voice actors for the child characters annoy me. Especially the obnoxious brats in the English Godzilla vs Megalon and Gamera vs Zigra
I'm sick of all the Kennys in these Kaiju movies. Godzilla vs Megalon was the worst. I so wanted Godzilla to step on that annoying child.
He was still better than the Kennys in Gamera vs. Zigra.

Idk why but I really hated the young girl in this movie
Ummmm... I guess. Jiger is a kaiju that I just can't like. Just too boring in style. Just too weird when it comes to powers. A kaiju that makes absolutely no sense and comes off more unrealistic than most kaiju in either of the big franchises.
