This is my favorite film of the Showa series. It moves at a nice pace, it has plenty of monster action, and it's well structured. It also has a nice music score, and the Kenny in it is actually tolerable.

Despite the premise, this film (and some that follow) is surprisingly brutal, even if it's not red blood. I'm not a fan of child centered monster movies, but the monster fights themselves were alright and Gyaos is quite an interesting Kaiju, though he looks kinda funny. Who would've thought that he would eventually become Gamera's arch-nemesis? I give the movie 3,5 out of 5 stars.

After reconsideration/reevaluation, I have new thoughts.
I have overall very mixed feelings about the first three movies.
The first is great on it's own merits but very flawed.
The second, I appreciate the dark somber tone, but the characters and story itself are bland.
      The monster is cool.
But a Kaiju with ice powers, weak against water? What?
The third has some good action and violence. And Gyaos is cool and stood the test of time.
      But I don't really love 2 and 3 like I originally said.
Which leads me to my thoughts on GAMERA VS JIGER.
I appreciate the slightly more mature tone and style.
I love the visual design for Jiger.
But I don't like the seemingly "throw in everything and see what sticks" approach to the powers.
And the idea of the boys going inside Gamera with a submarine, Fantastic Voyage style, is cool in concept but executed poorly.
Of the Gamera 4-8 movies, it's easily the best.
But it's on par with the first 3.
      Thanks for recommending it.
      I enjoyed revisiting it.

Best of the original run. Kaiju designs wouldn't completely crap out afterwards (I'll always be fond of Guiron's simple yet effective hunting-knife-with-legs-and-a-face look) but definitely take a turn for the worse (Viras and Jiger have particularly unpleasant designs) and the Kennies--along with Odious Comic Relief adults such as the infamous "Cornjob"--become exponentially excruciating with each entry.

After seeing this one I can totally see why Gyaos is Gamera's nemesis, though the creature is a bit awkward it still puts up a fantastic fight and despite having some major drawbacks, the sun and it's neck, it is still incredibly lethal and not a pushover.

I've re-watched the Heisei trilogy and felt like watching some Showa Gamera. I got this on right now. I strangely like the scene where a farmer goes crazy and another has others take the man away while snatching his gun. This saner one gets visibly angry and even a little crazy at the two stooges from the construction place being all 'hey it wasn't OUR fault!' 'No you brought bad luck.' Just like how the on taking control from the even crazier farmer with a shotgun seems to be losing it as well.

Oof I love Gamera vs. Barugon even if the fights are a bit lackluster but this was a step down. Annoying kid whose only good scene was when he was trying get rid of the angry villagers by throwing his toys at them. The sets and costums don't look nearly as good as the Barugon parts, lacks the sense of scale as the previous film. The monster fights have more energy to them but I dunno this one always kinda bores me. I do wince when Gamera's arm almost gets cut off and I do like how it sort of sets up a few red herrings in how to stop Gyaos. I figured maybe Gamera would break his neck since he can't turn his head, no maybe he'll die from sunlight...no wait he gets tossed into a volcano.
I like Gamera vs. Jiger a lot more for being better and I like Gurion more for being just crazy.
