fun fact: the director of this rewrote the film to have gamera die at the end because he was so convinced gamera's reputation would never recover from super monster
It is true, the director was not to blame for how bad the film was, it was Tokuma Shoten who demanded that "the film should be like this", so the director had nothing to do with the management of the film.
It would be nearly impossible for any character to recover after such a bad send-off. 👎
But Gamera did...in 1995. 👍

If the heisei Gamera trilogy is like the Christopher Nolan dark knight trilogy, then Gamera the super monster is like the batman and Robin of Gamera/kaiju movies.

@@ScreamingScallop Isn't Gappa Monster From the Prehistoric Planet in the US? I used to watch that, X from outer Space, Yonggary and Godzilla vs the Smog monster from a really weird vhs set.
At least with Godzilla's Revenge, there's decent direction in some (not all) of the human scenes and it feels like Ishiro Honda tried to make something good out of it, even with a lot of restrictions in the production.
At least Godzilla's revenge had Gabra...a sentence I never thought I'd write.
Everyone hates that movie. But at least that has a NEW fight.
well look on the bright side, at least next week we start with some of the best films of the kaiju genre: the heisei trilogy of gamera
unfortunately that means we're only getting 3 good films and one film that is mediocre at best

I actually kind of like this movie for the same reasons most people don't. Sure, it's all stock footage, but that just makes it Gamera's Greatest Hits, and when it's not, you have cute alien superwomen.
I can respect that.
I would have liked it better if the stock footage fights weren't so poorly cut and edited, and missing the good music from their respective movies instead of the awful soundtrack present here.
Even the worst Godzilla movies don't feel this embarrassingly cheap.
Hell even Godzillas revenge had some unique stuff.

Having never seen a Gamera film (we're big Goji fans), when it suddenly cut to Gamera on another planet, fighting the knife-faced kaiju...that was some of the funniest shit I've seen in a while. The inexplicable cut to the space train footage was just fantastic.
My wife and I had a blast with this movie from beginning to end.
That's most likely one of the few genuine ways to enjoy this one.
I'm actually thinking of tormenting my two friends by streaming this at a "movie night" as I've never seen this one and I'm pretty sure they haven't seen a single Gamera Movie!

Yeah, I have low standards when it comes to Tokusatsu moves, I really like All Monsters Attack (Godzilla's Revenge) and Son of Godzilla and Ebirah Horror of the Deep are my favourite Godzilla films after the original Gojira... But yeah.. I agree, this film was unwatchable, I just skipped through.

This was my first Gamera movie, I saw it on TBS on a saturday morning, so it's a sentimental favorite.

Gamera in this video's thumbnail looks like a dollar store toy of Gamera, but the Gamera in the next video's thumbnail looks like what a real Gamera toy looks like.

That is a pretty decent looking raygun, though. Well, except for the screw-holes which give away the fact that it's obviously a dollar-store toy (or whatever counts as dollars in Japan. Yen store toy?). But still a decent design.
We have 100 Yen stores, and you can buy a better laser gun toy than that one there!

I've heard they originally wanted a Destroy All Monsters style movie
Gamera, Barugon, Gyaos, Jiger and a whale monster from one of their other monster movies taking on Viras, Guiron, Zigra, Space Gyaos and a two headed dragon, being controlled by the combined forces of the alien races from those movies.

i am sorry but i seen all the Gamera movies and this one is still my favorite!
cheesy acting, childlike sci-fi and all the old monsterscenes in one movie, what more could you want for a fun Gamera experience, this is the only Gamera movie i keep rewatching on my original VHS but i prefer the Elvira Movie Macabre DVD version for the most fun!
In addition to Star Wars, Daiei was also keen on capitalizing on the worldwide success of 1978’s Superman blockbuster, ergo the “Space Superwomen” 😐

Please note that this godawful movie came out the same exact year as The Empire Strikes Back. So from the look of that imitation Star Destroyer featured in the film, they practically knew what they were ripping off.

This movie should have been called “gamera stockfootage monster”
In a weird way you could say this movie is a "Best of" clip show from previous entries. If you're only interested in the Kaiju fights and don't feel like watching seven movies, then that might be a good excuse to give this movie a watch. But I'd say watching the other movies, including the bad ones, is objectively the better option. This movie is probably the defining example of what makes a cheap movie. Still, the concept of Gamera fighting all his past enemies once more is pretty cool and I'd say that Toshio from the original Gamera is still the worst kid in the whole franchise. The saddest thing about this movie is that the stock footage is probably the best part of it. I give this movie 0.5 stars out of 5. And that's me being generous...

I just skipped to all the monster scenes! And thank goodness! The fights were still entertaining. Being the monster scenes are what we are there for, and the Shows Gamera human elements are usually bad. I figured I could kill several birds with one stone, by watching all the FX scenes in this movie. So I could see the Showa Gamera series, where it counts. Does this film have most of the monster sequences in the series? And are the others still worth watching, in some mind-set?

Huh. I was wrong about the Star Destroyer knockoff in Gamera Super Monster. It's been a long, long time (and I don't think I can bear to sit through this mess again) but I THOUGHT I distinctly remembered it being nothing but a still picture--a painting, in fact--throughout the film. But nope, they actually slapped together a model (slightly less hideous and lazy kit-bash than the Murray Leinster from Star Crash). So they get a "D" for bare-minimum effort.
The most awful thing about the human plot is that these "superheroic" space women, guardians of the universe and all, CAN'T DO ANYTHING with the spaceship sniping them. If they transform into their shitty spandex outfits, the spaceship immediately picks up on it and opens fire with a long-range laser that will kill them if they don't promptly change back. (Which they demonstrate repeatedly. Which also begs the question: wouldn't that laser be a much more efficient weapon for subjugating Earth than mind-controlled kaiju?)
But at least now all that's left to review are the best Gamera films (not including The Brave, which isn't bad but isn't particularly good IMO).
