I don't usually talk about remakes but I feel that if any Gamera movie or at least Kaiju can benefit from a remake it would be Zigra. Nowadays there is a lot we can do with just a giant shark, psychic powers, transformations...sharknados lol
So, I (22) decided to watch your playlist of Gamera reviews, and my mom (A lifelong Gamera fangirl of 40+ years) caught me watching this review.
She freaked out so much that the one sound that managed to cut through my headphones while listening to this was her gleefully childlike cry of *_"GAMERAA!!"_*
It's a great day when you rewatch KOTM in its highest quality. It's an even better day when Up from the Depths uploads. What's not a great day is knowing that the next Gamera review is Super Monster.
Lets be honest this movie really only has one redeeming feature. the extended Eiko Yanami bikini scene (along with the noticeable lack of undergarments in alien wardrobing) Which undoubtedly left the franchises primary audience experiencing some new unexpected and funny sensations.
If you thought this was horrible, I can't imagine how your going to review through "Gamera: Super Monster" next.
We don't talk about that "thing"

@@lolailo2199 This time the villain's spaceship is a *picture,* and it's also an obvious swipe of a Star Destroyer. Enjoy, because that's the film's only "new kaiju." Also, there are several shots of people vanishing/transforming which are accomplished by stopping the camera, having the actor step away/change outfits, then restarting the camera; unfortunately, they somehow couldn't avoid *moving* the camera between shots. #incompetent
@@lolailo2199 Words cannot fully describe it. It's basically a clip show of Gamera stock footage, framed via the worlds worst superhero story about three women in spandex driving a creeper van. Oh and what unique effects there are are incredibly blatantly ripped off from Star Wars. Actually MST3K'ing this one almost feels redundant. You feel like the movie is doing it to itself already. It might be the single worst Kaiju film ever made, and I do not say that lightly.
No amount of bracing will save you from this train wreck.
You better get ready for the next movie. To say it's bad is an understatement

1 - Great review!
2 - Much better than I expected.
3 - These kids were seriously loud and annoying.
4 - Zigra was somewhat goofy, especially his deep, slow speaking voice.
5 - The "Gamera Girl" alien babe was just absolutely fine. I might be watching too many Japanese Kaiju films in quick succession!
6 - I hate that Gamera resorted to "Playing" his fins like a xylophone.
7 - Did I say the Astronaut/Alien girl was fine?

This movie is so good! Honestly the best alien Gamera film
Zigra is definitely one of my favorite kaiju. It's such an awesome design.
Ah yes, Gamera goes to sea world, my favorite.
This was actually the very first Gamera movie I ever owned, having bought the Sandy Frank version on VHS at a Blockbuster Video store in the early 2000's. I was actually looking for Gamera vs. Barugon (having seen the VHS tape weeks earlier for rent), but I picked this one up by mistake instead. Tragically, that Blockbuster went under before I could go back and fix my mistake. FORTUNATELY, I later bought Gamera 2: Advent of Legion on DVD, and my short-lived hatred of all things Gamera was quickly replaced with an undying love for the monster after collecting and viewing the entirety of the 1990's Kaneko-directed trilogy on DVD.
Anyway, Up From The Depths, I feel your pain, and I sympathize with all of the suffering you had to go through while making this review. Believe me, I feel your pain, because I HAVE watched this film from beginning to end, so I know EXACTLY what you undoubtedly went through in order to review this atrocity.
Zigra's roar at 1:33 sounds like La Carcagne from the Giant Claw
Zigra is easily the best thing about this movie, a fish monster is definitely something you don't see a lot in tokusatsu (the only other real fish-like kaiju is Aqua Mothra Leo, and that was over twenty years later.) Design is great, but unfortunately he couldn't carry the movie to greatness by himself.

If Gamera vs. Zigra were to be remade today, Zigra's powers would be expanded, and something could be salvaged from the uneven 1971 original (I always liked the Showa-era Gamera flicks.) Plus a lot of dark humour would surround the plot itself. 😸😸🐢🐢🐢🇬🇧🇺🇸

This one was a real slog, though in an almost pleasant way. It is way more bearable if you watch the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version.

Almost every one of the Showa-era reviews start with "Despite the financial success of the previous Gamera-film, Daiei where in financial trouble". It makes me think that either someone at the studios financial-department where terrible at their job, or someone was using way too much money on hookers and blow.
Actually, there was a lot of money laundering behind the scenes at Daiei.

Dang it’s a shame zigra always seemed like a cool monster to me it’s a shame the movie he’s in is pretty dull. I think he deserves to get brought back whenever they bring a new gamers series back at the very least.
I think he should be the main reoccuring villain of a cartoon adaptation
I think the biggest problem with this film imo anyways and the next film (to a even worse degree) is that their so god damn boring to watch.
This movie offers little to nothing new that hasn't already been done better in previous entries. While Zigra has a pretty cool design (and me being a fan of sharks), it's not a very effective Kaiju and the Kaiju fights are probably the most lackluster in the whole franchise. The movie can best be described as a sinking ship, representing the Gamera Showa series at that time, sinking deeper and deeper, with the movie after that being where the series finally hits rock bottom. I give this one 1 out of 5 stars.
About the only new thing about this one is that the duo of Kennys in this film are a young Japanese boy and a young white _girl_ for a change.

And yes, 5-year-olds *love* this movie. I have seen that first hand.

This movie is definitely one of the worst films ever made just like super monster gamera but at least this film(gamera vs zigra) doesn’t have a lot of stockfootage and the kaiju(zigra) is definitely decent.
