    I would have liked Daiei to have brought Barugon back for the Heisei Trilogy (even though that was supposed to be the case, but his return was scrapped in favor of Gyaos'). but there is a spinoff manga taking place between Gamera 2 and Gamera 3 where Heisei Gamera actually fights Barugon.

  • @HatCreature
    @HatCreature 5 лет назад +16

    Of the original Gamera films, this is, in my opinion, the best just because of the quality. I love dark films and the theme of greed was excellently portrayed, I was actually surprised to see a kaiju movie with such an engaging human story. Barugon itself isn't my favorite kaiju in this series but easily one of the strongest foes Gamera faces, he has a really hard time in this one compared to the fights in later films.

  • @bigboi5545
    @bigboi5545 5 лет назад +32

    Personally, I quite liked the slower pace of the fights in this movie.
    I feel it gave them a more animalistic quality, as well as better representing a sense of scale than most other Showa fight scenes.
    Best Showa Gamera film by far, regardless though.

    The slower pacing of the fight scenes made them more realistic to me, as did the fact that so much of this film happens at
    night, which I think adds to the subconscious fear factor. This movie creates a great mood, and that's why I've come back to it more
    than many others in the genre.

    Godzilla won the 80s easily since the only 80s Gamera film was Super Monster.
    Godzilla wins the first entry easily.
    But Gamera wins the first sequel I'd say. Gamera vs Barugon>Godzilla Raids Again.

    In advance of your Gamera series, I started a re-watch of all the films. I just finished "Gamera vs Legion" from the Heisei series. I mostly agree with your assessment of this film, however, Gamera is the star. What I loved about it was the darker elements you mentioned. Considering what is to come later on down the pike, this one was perhaps the last most dramatic one leading up to the 90s films. Thanks for letting me go on this walk down Gamera memory lane. Great video.

As a huge fan of the Gamera Trilogy from the 90's, I'd only seen some of the showa era Gamera films via MST3k, and had only really seen Gamera vs Gyoas (which is next on your list!), and was pleasantly surprised with this film. As far as the Showa era is concerned, this one is easily the best. An effective human villain. A serious story and message and no annoying kids. The Kaiju fights were kinda lackluster, but Barugon is a very interesting Kaiju and this movie is pretty much his, while Gamera barely gets any focus. It's still a Kaiju movie worth seeing. Sadly it only went downhill from here. I'll give this one 4 out of 5 stars.

    This is my second favorite of the Showa Gamera films. Why? NO KENNIES! NO KENNIES! Granted, Gamera vs. Gaos, my favorite Showa entry, DOES have a Kenny, but that particular child is easily the most tolerable of the bunch. Still, Gamera vs. Barugon is easily the most serious of the series until Guardian Of The Universe came along, and it's also the only one with a message: greed is bad. Yeah, it's an obvious message, but it feels like one that we kind of need to be reminded of now and again. Also, the Gamera suit in this film was the most menacing.

    I forgot Barugon was gonna be there second film for you. For me it was surprisingly great. BUT yes honestly I was actually really more enthralled with the human story and competitively there was actually very little monster action, up until there is, and then it's a lot of Barugon, especially since he defeats Gamera the first time. But yes I found the whole reflector mirror weapon epic!

  • @Irrelevant402
    @Irrelevant402 5 лет назад +1

    Oh man so many things I love about this! I saw it when I was a kid and a lot of images stuck with me for years before I saw it again.
    -The whole attack on the dam but really just the sound of saucer Gamera slamming it.
    -The scorpion scene.
    -Barugon's great birth.
    -Barugon's arrival from the water and appearing over a warehouse.
    -Barugon pausing to look up at a tower with a spinning light.
    -Both fist fights that asshole gets into.
    -Barugon freezing Gamera then Gamera stabbing him in the face before getting flipped over.
    -Barugon eating that asshole at long last.
    I feel the last quarter is a bit weaker since the human villain exits the film and it becomes very 'let's try this no let's try this.' I mean neat ideas don't get me wrong but it drags a bit and I wish the final fight between Gamera and Barugon was a little longer. Yeah it is a weakness that Gamera doesnt' do much...but damn the production values are great and no kids!
    I got say whoever played Barugon did a great job. He has a lot of neat nuanced moments when Gamera shows up like crouching down and hiding wondering what's up with this weird turtle thing. Or how he starts walking towards the frozen Gamera, stops when Gamera starts to raise his head then proceeds when Gamera puts his head back down.
    Yeah I really like Barugon a lot.

He goes back to earth and destroys a dam like "Fuck you, renewable energy! And fuck you even more, village! I'm motherfucking Gamera! Sure they all deserve to die! And I hope they burn in hell!"

    The problem with Barugon was he was a slow-moving quadrupedal like Gamera and they hadn't quite worked out how to make the kaiju battles "work". Showa Gamera is underrated. Always a watch when they were televised in the 70's and 80's. To much kvetching about "Kenny" thanks to MST3K stretching their jokes. The films were aimed at children. They were children's fims so "duh" they had kids in them. There were only two forgivable "lesser" Gameras back-to-back and even those films (Guiron, Viras) were fun watches, especially Viras which contained inventive on-board spaceship sequences that invoked a sense of wonder on a shoestring.

    Well child characters arent there to make the film appeal towards kids. I mean “Let Me In” or “Let The Right One In” is a horror movie with child characters as the main protagonists but its not for kids at all. In fact they are rated R. The first Gamera and Gamera vs Barugon were not intended for kids. Understand Gamera was trying to copy Godzilla during the 60’s in which Godzilla wasn’t being kid friendly yet. That wasnt until after Destroy All Monsters that Godzilla slipped into kiddie territory. Then Godzilla vs MechaGodzilla broke off from that. Along with MechaGodzilla’s Counterattack. Gamera only became kid friendly after Gamera vs Gaos.

    Are those Japanese actors in blackface playing the natives?

      Yes. It was a very common thing back then unfortunately.

      Up From The Depths I mean, it’s a bit more understandable when Japanese movies do it since they don’t have the same history that the US does when it comes to slavery and segregation and stuff like that but it still is a little uncomfortable to watch in this day and age. Also, they got American actors to play the Americans in the first movie, so why not get actors of colour to play the natives for this one? It makes no sense.

      @@ajzeg01 Japan may not have had quite the history of racism that the United States does, but given their own levels of xenophobia at times, and the implied fear of miscegenation that comes from the fact that Karen is the only "New Guinean" who _isn't_ in blackface for seemingly no other reason that so that she can be a love interest to the hero, I'd say that the problems may stem from a different root, but go just as deep.

      In the sense of being a spiny quadruped and the second monster in the series it's similar, but to me it seems rather chameleon-like which is interesting.

    This movie is the true sequel of the first film the rest of the gamera sequels are tedious and shity
    Edit: actually I changed my mind I think the first three films from the original film all the way to gamera vs gyaos are definitely my favorite Showa gamera films.
