I can testify that singing is elevating the state of mind from the abuse slavery. And the sun (I didn t honour too much) is very important, healing, at least 10 minutes a day.

Yes, I totally agree. It has been only recently that I have discovered this as I recover from a decade of narcissistic abuse. Being rather introverted, trying to let go of the embarrassment of thinking somebody hearing and being judgmental, was an obstacle. And this ebbs and flows to various degrees. But when I can get the correct level of inhibition, it is pure, delicious emotional regulation. Finding this out a little late at 62 but eternally grateful nonetheless

Great information and advice Dr. Vaknin. I had very bad therapy. It only reopened old wounds and caused me to ruminate. I left therapy WAY WORSE and totally destabilized. Trusting no one, I retreated from life and fell apart. This wasn't solely due to therapy (obviously), but the terrible therapy certainly was kindling on the fire.

What made me surprised was that I was in an abusive relationship with a guy for 10 years, turned out he was a super intelligent communal narcissist, or maybe self righteous type. Every time I left his house, I sang my heart out on my long 2 hour drive back home. I think I did that intuitively. It’s been 2 years since we broke up and I haven’t felt that urge to sing while driving

Your stunning command of the English as a 4th language is a pleasure to observe. Better than most native English speakers. I don’t mean most as in 51%…more like 99%. It’s very satisfying to hear such things described so well, with such density and precision. I’m going to listen to all your episodes simply to improve my communication and thinking skills.

Wonderful sound advice as always. I recently was so close to seeking Ketamine microdoses as I no longer have therapist access but instead realized i need to address fundamentals in a disciplined fashion and come to accept how I am responsible for daily wellness habits just getting outside etc.. with chronic stress and CPTSD, anxiety and OCD the science shows that the body depletes from l-glutamine in the gut which then relates to gut-brain axis and IBS symptoms.. also B vitamins are crucial for mental health and im recently discovering B1 or Thiamine Deficiency is prevalent due to high carb consumption. When we are under attack we tend to eat more carbohydrates like rice and wheat and corn which can block absorption of B1 vitamin as well as other B vitamins for cognitive and nerve function. The need to support nervous system is critical and also getting magnesium into the brain for cognition. Magnesium l-Threonate seems to be helping me. The more brain power and ATP the better my sleeps and motivation to get outside and so forth. Your lectures are educational and entertaining 😊. I also agree I shouldn't think so highly of my intelligence because ive been conned many times as well. That is a good hack. Not arrogant, but just analytical and studious. I can always do better. Thanks Sam 😊

I want to say, I think intelligent people are aware of when they don’t know. When training dogs, with an understood behavior, it’s the anticipation of reward (I.e dopamine release) which is important- so the dog is not rewarded every time for the correct behaviour, rather he is occasionally rewarded, and like a gambler he tries harder for that occasion reward.
Oxytocin is also interesting. It is the love hormone, but it’s also the hormone that will cause a mother to fight for her offspring.
I’m some studies intranasal oxytocin would cause better eye contact between dog (protective breeds) and handler when a stranger entered the room, but in some dogs it could cause aggression towards the stranger.

I suspect you will feel more depressed, anything but happy. My point? Some songs will make you feel depressed, not happy. You would need to choose uplifting music to feel better. But I love the Blues and sad songs mostly, maybe it's genetic!

Sarcasm has got me into sooo much trouble, I was unable to control it at work with pyscho/narcs, it didn't go well... Body/mind linked far more then allopathic medicine would admit to I believe, can't let it get in the way of pharma profits though. I went to therapy after a Narc relationship, gave up, they didn't understand but more importantly I didn't so researched it but sooo much BS. Realised I've been a codependent all my life, very humbling when it was clear how much I contributed. I found your body of work to be most helpful although I admit I struggle with some of the concepts. I've come to believe that my ex was not NPD but a self centred ar**hole with narc traits from childhood trauma on top of an atavistic (sorry just a $2 word) hypergamamous drive. Can you comment more on present societal ills and breakdown, reasons and perceived outcomes?

    Sum with GPT:
    ### Video Summary: "How to Hack for Your Mind to Heal, Succeed"
    **Introduction:**
    - The human mind is incredibly complex and is often misunderstood.
    - Self-help industry often provides misleading advice.
    - The speaker, S. Vaknin, offers 20 psychological hacks based on recent research to help heal and succeed in life.
    **Hack 1: Understanding Memory**
    - Memory is not a precise recollection of events but a reconstruction each time we remember.
    - Our memories are about our emotional reactions and are constantly changing.
    - Realizing this can help reduce the trauma associated with painful memories.
**Hack 2: Dealing with Social Rejection**
    - The brain processes social rejection similarly to physical pain.
    - Use physical activities to manage emotional pain from rejection or humiliation.
**Hack 3: Thinking in Another Language**
    - To make rational decisions, think in a second language.
    - This reduces emotional influence and promotes analytical thinking.
    **Hack 4: Dunning-Kruger Effect**
    - Less intelligent people tend to overestimate their abilities.
    - Being overly confident can be a sign of lacking understanding or knowledge.
**Hack 5: The Impact of Music**
    - Music influences mood and information processing.
    - Avoid multitasking with music, as it can distort decision-making.
    - Singing can reduce anxiety and depression by releasing endorphins and oxytocin.
    **Hack 6: Sunlight Exposure**
    - Sunlight prevents depression and mood disorders.
    - Just 10 minutes of sunlight can have a significant positive impact.
    **Hack 7: Dopamine and Self-Denial**
    - Break the cycle of dopamine-induced pleasure by practicing self-denial.
    - Avoid addictive behaviors to regain control over your actions.
    **Hack 8: Importance of Sleep**
    - Both too little and too much sleep can be detrimental.
    - Aim for 7-8 hours of good quality sleep to maintain mental and physical health.
**Hack 9: Reading Speed and Comprehension**
    - Reading longer lines (about 100 characters) can improve reading speed and comprehension.
**Hack 10: Mental and Physical Health Connection**
    - Mental health issues can manifest as physical symptoms.
    - Treat either the mind or the body to improve overall well-being.
Continuing from where we left off, here are the remaining 10 hacks from the video "How to Hack for Your Mind to Heal, Succeed" by S. Vaknin:
    ### Hack 11: Break the Pleasure Cycle
    - **Explanation:** Engaging in repetitive addictive behaviors such as constantly staring at screens or substance abuse is often mediated by the pleasure effects of dopamine. This cycle of pleasure and desire needs to be broken.
    - **Hack:** Dedicate a few minutes each day to self-denial, avoiding addictive activities. This could be social media, texting, alcohol, or even certain types of food. By breaking the pleasure cycle, you regain control over your actions and reactions.
    ### Hack 12: Balanced Sleep
    - **Explanation:** Both undersleeping and oversleeping have detrimental effects on your health, potentially leading to conditions like diabetes and stroke.
    - **Hack:** Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep. Investigate any underlying medical conditions like sleep apnea or diabetes if you suffer from insomnia. Consider consulting a cognitive behavior therapy practitioner for sleep-related issues.
    ### Hack 13: Time Management
    - **Explanation:** Time is a limited resource that cannot be bought. Many people seek shortcuts like fast reading techniques, which are often ineffective.
    - **Hack:** Focus on reading materials formatted with longer lines, such as books. Studies have shown that lines of 100 characters are ideal for faster reading and better comprehension.
    ### Hack 14: Treat the Mind-Body Connection
    - **Explanation:** Mental and physical health are interconnected. Mental distress can lead to physical symptoms like headaches and back pain.
    - **Hack:** If your body is relatively healthy, focus on treating your mind. If your body is in bad shape, treat your body first. Addressing one will positively impact the other.
    ### Hack 15: The Dunning-Kruger Effect
    - **Explanation:** Less intelligent people tend to overestimate their intelligence, while more intelligent people often underestimate themselves.
    - **Hack:** Be cautious of your self-assessments. If you find yourself thinking highly of your own intelligence, consider the possibility that you might be overestimating your abilities. Stay humble and open to learning.
    ### Hack 16: Perceptual Expectation
    - **Explanation:** Music can significantly affect how you process information and perceive the world around you. For example, sad music can make it difficult to identify happy faces.
    - **Hack:** Avoid listening to music when you need to make analytical decisions or process complex information. Use music as a separate activity rather than background noise during important tasks.
    ### Hack 17: Singing for Mental Health
    - **Explanation:** Singing has been shown to reduce anxiety and depression by releasing endorphins and oxytocin.
    - **Hack:** Incorporate singing into your daily routine, regardless of your singing ability. This simple act can improve your mood and reduce stress.
    ### Hack 18: Sarcasm and Intelligence
    - **Explanation:** Sarcasm is often associated with high intelligence and creativity, despite being perceived as negative or antisocial.
    - **Hack:** Use sarcasm as a tool to stimulate your brain and enhance creative thinking. However, be mindful of its impact on social interactions and relationships.
    ### Hack 19: Sunlight and Mood
    - **Explanation:** Exposure to sunlight can prevent mood disorders like depression, largely due to the production of vitamin D.
    - **Hack:** Ensure you get at least 10 minutes of sunlight daily to help stabilize your mood and improve mental health. If natural sunlight is not available, consider using artificial light sources designed to mimic sunlight.
    ### Hack 20: Dopamine Management
    - Explanation:**
Many addictive behaviors are driven by the brain's dopamine cycle, which involves pleasure and desire.
    - **Hack:** Practice self-denial and avoid engaging in pleasurable activities for short periods throughout the day. This helps break the dopamine cycle and regain control over addictive behaviors.
By applying these hacks, you can better manage your mental and physical health, improve decision-making, and enhance overall well-being. Each hack is designed to be practical and cost-effective, making them accessible for daily use.
