Nursery to Bonsai - Deodar Cedar (Cedrus Deodara)

- This was my first ever major styling in the 5 years I've been practicing Bonsai. I found this Deodar Cedar at a local nursery here in Washington for $160!! For the trunk size and shear magnitude of the tree, that is a steal! I had to buy it. Finding a pot and re-potting it going to be a challenge. This is something I will put off for a year or two. I've also read that Cedar's don't take root pruning that well so there is more studying I need to do.
I have several videos in the works that showcase repot's and stylings that will take almost a year to make. Please consider subscribing as the videos are going to take some time to get out.
Beautiful transition from overgrown neglect to a 'traffic stopper'! So envious of your 'find' of such a mature specimen. Thank you.
Watching you work is wonderfully therapeutic. Thank you.
I appreciate that! I created this channel with the goal of making relaxing content for people to enjoy. Thank you so much!
Nice initial styling. It has so much potential. Great find !
Thank you! The repotting in the future worries me though. Much of the research I've come across so far indicates cedars don't take well to root pruning. Decreasing the rootball might take some time.
good stuff, nice find
Sometimes you find the gems in unexpected places! 🤘
7:42 i felt that snap
It hurt just a tad. Good thing it wasn't a super important branch
Thats a great tree, and it will only get better!! Awesome job!
Much appreciated!!
Not only is this a nice tree, but your videography gives me lots of ideas too lol
Hahaha thank you! All my videos going forward will most likely be shot in this style.

Holy shit 160 for that?? What a steal. That would be 500 easily here in norcal
I'm at a crossroads now with the tree though, after digging for the nebari, it's become apparent that it's a graft. So I've neen trying to find a way to hide it lol
You did good work and all but the stock itself was really awesome to begin with. Such an interesting trunk. Great find!
Excellent video, you are an artist in this presentation
What a piece of work? It’s so real looking!
It's about as real as a tree can get! =)
Excellent.Very good job
Nice tree
Keep working on
Let's wait next step
Good luck
Thank you! Next step will be a pot hopefully next year+
Very elegant presentation. Thank you.
Thank you!
Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you and thank you for watching!
Very cool find and nice job.
🙏🙏
Very good bonsai, friend
Thank you very much!
Very nice tree en good vid. Are you going to make more?
Currently working on 2 more videos. One is my first repot of a Shimpaku. Another is growing trees from seeds for bonsai material. This video is going to take me.over a year to make though hahaha
Wish I could find a tree like that at the nurseries I go to.
I just got really lucky. Ever since then, I haven't found anything like this tree.
tnx!!
Cool nursery find! I lol’d when you looked at the camera after snapping the branch. It happens to everyone 😅
Hahaha yea. Lesson learned, check the flexibility before wiring lmao! Thank you very much for watching!
Made it even better imo lol
Have you by chance repotted this one. Having only been doing bonsai for a year I'm a little timid to repot my 4 cedars 2 atlas and 2 deodar from their nursery containers. I did an initial styling on 2 and have left 2 alon aside from some minor pruning. Im having success with reporting all my deciduous junipers and pine material. Lost all my thuja this brutal summer even with two a day waterings I'm afraid of killing my cedars, they are my favorite!given all I've heard about their temperamental roots. Are they really as easy to kill when root pruning? I can't find any kind of video or podcast going over these awesome a sold process for dealing with cedrus. A little help folks??🙏🙏🙏
She looks good.
Ayeee what's up Matt!
@@PNWBonsai just watching your videos. You haven't been posting long but the production looks really good.
@@PNWBonsai I have seedlings coming out my ears. The variety of trees that come through my nursery. The Japanese maple colors alone.
@@PNWBonsai maybe I bring a couple trees to work and you take them off my hands. 🙂
@@matthewkizziahcuzia...gott9632 haha maybe! I have about 20 seedlings popping up this year. Making videos and editing is another hobby of mine lol thought I would bring bonsai and video making together!
Very Nice Video Sir. I hope things goes well the this Bonsai Tree and you please give Us a Updates. How about a small tour of a Young Bonsai Nursery you have
I will for sure be supplying updates to the tree! I have a few videos I've been filming that will definitely show off the trees I have! My videos are going to sometime though. One video will contain months and months of footage. I want to give the viewers the perspective of how long stuff actually takes! Please stay tuned!
Very good
🙏
Hey, another local! I spotted Deodar Cedar at the Issaquah Home Depot today and I didn't buy one, but I'm thinking I'll go back and buy at least one since they're 50% off, I believe, making them about $15 each! They're not nearly as aged as the one in this video, perhaps 2 or 3 years old, but I have a feeling it will be a great tree to create bonsai from nursery stock.
$15 sounds like a great deal! Especially if they are that young, you should be able to wire the trunk and bend to your liking.
@@PNWBonsai I was off on the price a little bit... it was $25. It's a beauty though and I can't wait to get into working on it!
Nice tree, how is it doing? everything I read says you can't wire them, they just spring back and you have to just use trimming. I got one for 1/2 off for $60, not as old as that one, only about 1.5" trunk but great semi cascade if I repot.
How’s the tree of yours doing now?
@@KitakuBonsai I repotted into a training pot, it's dropping a lot of needles but it was root bound when I bought it, there is new growth at the tips so will see how it looks this summer.
@@steveanacorteswa3979 ok, sounds like it’s still hanging in there! Cool!
I have one of those and would like to repot. When is the best time to do that?
Late winter/ early spring is typically considered the best time of year for repotting
Any update? Specifically on reporting and or root development ?
Haven't done a repot yet. I dug a little into the pot to find the nebari and discovered I'm going to have to get creative on the type of pot I display this tree. Once I get it, I will definitely make a video!
very nice video. did you compose the music?
I did not. I wish I had the knowledge and equipment to do that.
@@PNWBonsai to me that music sounds like it was made with mutable instruments synth modules, based off RUclips demos. The cheapest route would just be to download some software. You may already own software that would allow you to do so. Protools?
If you enjoy dumping thousands of dollars into new hobbies though, it is an extremely rewarding experience fiddling knobs and sliders, but there are plenty of computer simulations to achieve the same sounds for your purposes. There’s a pretty big modular community in the Seattle area.
@@ballsroyal6484 Bonsai and my kids already take up my money haha I source my music from a site called Epidemic Sound.
@@PNWBonsai preaching to the choir brother. Luckily I worked for synth company for a while and scored some cool freebies from those sweethearts. Someday I need to learn to work all the equipment I built. It would be cool to have the synths going while I’m working my trees. Wire a tree while working a synth patch!
@@ballsroyal6484 oh hell yea man. Nothing more Zen than handling a piece of nature in a confined space with chill vibes in the ear!

Not nursery stock, it is Bonsai Material..... lets be correct and honest about naming conventions!!a please!!!
That’s great material. Also, this video totally had a relaxing vibe to it. Nice job 🔝
Much appreciated and high praise from a legend!
