It's an interesting view on a plant, and I must say, first time I see something like this, even doe I'm into bonsai for about 15 years. From where I come, southeast Europe, one of the suggestions, beside chopping the straight upper part of the tree, would be to air layer the top. When it comes to the cascade style, and generally choosing what is the best to do with the trees you have, it all comes down to a couple of standard answers. I don’t agree with it, and think that we can be bold in observation of our trees, thinking out of box, but for some reason many people don’t like it or take some rules for granted. In short, I would call it one-dimensional thinking, instead of multi-dimensional that I prefer. My way of thinking is closer to yours. I dedicated my bonsai work to creating bonsai from atypical plant types, as creating from standard bonsai plants atypical styles for them. It fulfills me, as everything I do in my life, I tend to be unique, so videos like this are perfect for getting new ideas and insights, but at the same time hard to find.
Aussie Dave here David, awesome work, I cut my casuarina pine off at half the height 😒🙄. Now seeing what you have achieved I could've done the same 🤔🤫🤔. Anyway lesson learnt for my next casuarina 🤗🤗.
Looks fantastic. I mentioned in a previous video that collectors corner at Garden World in Braeside has cascade pots. They have even more now, some quite big, that may suit that tree.
Thanks for posting. I have been looking at Blue Atlas at my local nursery because of how cheap they are but had no idea what I would do with them. This is a great idea!
I have heard you should plan on 2-3 years for Atlas Cedar bends to take a set and even then they will periodically need rewiring to prevent them from rebounding. Given such a long period under wire I also would expect to see bite scars when you do take it off. Otherwise a great job.
Awesome! And Rob needs to chat with the potters in the club - a custom pot is probably the best way to go, I think. I have been scared to bend that far and been guilty of making cuts that then don't make me happy. Might have to be a bit braver next time . . .
I love it! Well done! I know your pain about cascade pots. It's hard to find cascade pots here in Canada as well. There are lots of cheap Chinese cascade pots for small trees, but not much for medium to larger size trees. :(
David-I finally bent my Blue Atlas cedar yesterday using a hybrid of your method. I did apply raffia first then added 3 strands of 6 mil aluminum as per your video. Also, since my tree has a large diameter base, I had to use a steel rod and guy wires to put a bend in the lower section. But it worked out fine with that added leverage. Do you have any feeling how long it takes for the bends to take a set? Often with very flexible trees they will bounce right back when wire is removed so I wonder about these.
@@blueridgebonsai9155 that’s awesome!! I always like hearing when followers have tried something. Yeah usually a year minimum with cedars. They are one of the worst to spring back if wire removed too early.
It belongs to a customer of mine. Tree is super healthy and doing really well. Hopefully he will put it in next years club exhibition and I’ll show it on video.
David, I am getting worried about your mental health, in the last few videos you were giving the trees come to bed eyes and whispering sweet nothings and now your saying the tree speaks to you🤔. You know the men in the white coats will be coming very soon 😂 Surprised you didn't get "Hanh" to help with the bends? In relation to the pot why dont you commission a local potter to make a one off?
What a difference it made. Looks awesome. Well done.
I give a like straight away as I love semi and full cascades!
They really are beautiful!!

We all make blunders here and there. It’s natural.
Wauw thats amazing. Respect !!🙌🏾🙌🏾
Super awesome right??
Great way of going about it. Thanks! Gonna try this technique.
Have you tried it yet?
@@KitakuBonsai not yet. Haven’t decided what to try it on or found the right plant yet.
@@flappyfish42 hopefully the opportunity will present itself when the time is right
Quite inspiring, thank you for the lesson.

Awesome video I’ve just bought a tall skinny cedar of Lebanon 🇱🇧 and I’m going to try and do my first big cascade 🍀☘️🍀☘️🍀☘️🌲🎋
Ooooo those cedars are beautiful!!
@@KitakuBonsai yes I love the cedar trees 🌳 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Nice work. Cheers from Ojai California
Cheers from Hershey Pennsylvania!!
David-any chance for a followup loom at this tree? Did it survive the radical bend?
Yes it’s doing really well with the customer. Hopefully new bonsai pot this coming October and in its first show next year April.
Incredible. Well done.
Super cool right?
Great work looks fantastic

Yeah good point about getting pot made. I’ll let the owner know.
That bend in the trunk doesn’t look natural you won’t ever see a tree bent like that in nature
