True. Although, as long as you are not under the truck, it's not really a huge danger. I don't drag out jackstands for brake jobs or tire rotations...but I sure will if I'm going under the truck for fluid changes or such.
@@yetisdeuce1315 that's ok in theory but it's too easy to get distracted or to forget it's not on stands and poke your head under to look at something etc. Or worse what if a sudden emergency came up like your kid or coworker got hurt and you left the vehicle without thinking to add stands, then some idiot boy comes walking along, crawls under the car and kicks the jack handle accidentally? It literally take under a minute to add stands (you don't even need to fully remove the jack) why risk it? I've been a mechanic for 20 years and have seen cars fall off of jacks. It's sudden, violent and leaves very little time to react.
As said before in other comments, I really like videos like this. Thanks for showing and explaining. I was told to stay away from changing disc brakes on bigger trucks that it was a nightmare. I see nothing even remotely nightmarish. Thanks for all you do Sir.
I watch almost all of your videos and really enjoy them, I must say I was shocked to see you working without jack stands, Mrs JC must not have been with you on this one
if that jack had failed, the differential and the spring mounts would have hit the ground and not me. i am very aware of the situations i put myself. however, i do appreciate the fact that you are looking out for me as well.
I'm a diesel mechanic for a living and I hate doing brakes I would much rather do any other job there is on big truck Then breaks You always do awesome videos
That's going to make someone a sweet work truck. Plenty of life left in it and built like a tank. A plus it's under CDL weight cap, so it can become a ""gentleman's" ride if desired...lol Great video format JC, showing the problems and the repair work. In its other life, someone spent some serious time redoing that body, and didn't spare the coin on the steel. Hope you get it buttoned up, built to your standards and a buyer sees the value! Doug@ the "ranch"
i dont usually "doll" one up but i might make an exception on this one. i can add a few nice upgrades here and there to make a really great truck. time will tell....i am going to do it all up and put it up for sale. if it sells, thats fine. if it doesnt, then i will i good work truck!
@ J.C Smith Could you possibly get the part numbers or link for the front hubs on that truck ? Need to get rid of Dayton hubs on the front of a 1995 Intrnational 3800 Bus with disk brakes..I really enjoy your channel and the quality workmanship you put into everything you do..
It’s hard to keep a truck clean if you get inside with dirty hands and clothes. I like a Cat engine more. That’s a nice little Freightliner. Brake work can usually take a turn on you. That’s the 1st time I’ve seen disk brakes on a big truck..like the looks but seems to involve more work when changing the brakes. That would make a nice work truck.
They sure got all there money out of those brakes! My commute to your shop is a little further! Lol looks like you didn't have a camera lady for most of this one, thanks JC
I see them with a steel wheel on the inside & aluminum wheel on the outside down here a lot...l forgot to mention on the other video when l got a tire won't let go of the bead l put a little gasoline (let it find it's way around) & go on to the next one while the gas gets some time to work in then come back...that bed looks too good to cut into to me but it's your business & your call...what did they do - drive with the parking brake on (l saw the heat signatures)...you got a pretty good controlled swing with that sledge hammer (better than me) might want to give golf a try - your short game should be good & that's what wins...drive for show - putt for dough
the parking brake is on the back of the transmission. this truck sat a lot. rust seemed to be the cause of this problem. i hate to cut into that bed too but it would be so much more useful with a gooseneck ball. if i do cut into it, i will have to make it va ery neat and clean job. i do the same thing with tires but using soap. i like to soap them all and come back to them. never understood gulf.....hit the ball as far as you can and then chase it...its not for me.
Our local business (kinda like a fastenal) they make brake hoses and a/c hoses. Working on a Ford tractor and ford wanted $3xx for two brake hoses (idk why it has a brake system that uses brake fluid instead of a hydraulic fluid system) but they made both for $100 like 4ft long each. Then figured out the clutch line leaked also. $50 to get it made. All 3 master cylinders used the same reservoir that only held like 3 ounces of fluid. So if your clutch line blew you wouldn't have brakes vice versa. Lol
Hey really wish you'd get a tripod or something like that so we can see the actual work you're doing instead of cut shots. Would like to see some of the work go down. Great job
understand that i have a lot of trucks to fix and it takes twice as long to do the job if i video any of it...setting up cameras and trying to get just the right angles will make it take even longer. i show what i can.....my main focus is getting the truck fixed. i video what i can when i can.
You sure put a lot of work into some of those trucks. You put a lot of attention into what matters like brakes and running gear, tires etc..... I didn't know you could polish big truck rims like that. What does the machine use? Is it bead blasted or brushes of some kind? I would have thought new rims were more expensive that 200.00 each. Have to save where you can. NAPA and the web are your friends.........
it is like a flapper wheel only the ends are rounded. they start with the most abrasive disc and work their way down to the least abrasive (depending on how bad the rim is). then they go to polishing discs. some need more than i hope but it is what it is.....i will try to "create value" somewhere else to help make up for it.
I have the same problem in my dodge I've been using this Meguiar's G4016 Supreme Shine Protectant it even has scotchgard in it it will clean anything and keep it that way without that greasy feeling well worth the money
Interesting video.....why are there brake hoses at each end of the rear axle? For sold axle hydraulic systems I usually see one flex line and tubing out to the wheels....
the brake hoses need to be there. as the brake pads wear the caliper will need to move. a solid line would break. you may be thinking of a rear hydraulic drum brake system.
what is the GVW of that truck. It looks pretty big to me not to be using air brakes. I wouldn't have thought in a million years a truck that size was using hydraulic disk brakes, at least they look hydraulic to me and not air disk.
You need to ask your snap-on guy about some tap extractors. They work pretty slick. A bit spendy and hardly ever used but worth their weight in gold when you need them. Keep up the good work.
For a broken tap you might consider finding a wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) shop nearby. That's what they do and depending on your shop, it can be a pretty reasonable cost.
J.C. Smith hey you’ve given me info about how to get in contact with you before but I cannot remember how. I am local to you and need something done. Wondering if you’re interested. Thanks.
Why is everyone whining about not having Jack stands? Hes not doing a job underneath the truck, it's not gonna crush him if a jack gave out. Acting like hes about to die from not having stands, its apparent the guy isnt an idiot , if he was underneath the truck he would have Jack stands
common sense has entered the building folks! a man who gets it! i was in more danger driving the 1/2 mile to my shop on a back road out in the country that morning that i was that truck falling on me.
i payed for it so i could use it for hauling my camper and a trailer to haul in stuck i buy....i have no interest in using it for my everyday work truck....i have other trucks that are better suited for that. i just need to get them set up.
You're a braver man than I am working with no jack stands especially leaving it like that.
True. Although, as long as you are not under the truck, it's not really a huge danger. I don't drag out jackstands for brake jobs or tire rotations...but I sure will if I'm going under the truck for fluid changes or such.

Do RC Shake hands with danger for sake of extra 5 mins
I like this style of video from from the pricing of parts to a little behind the scenes on the wheel polishing. 🔧
As said before in other comments, I really like videos like this. Thanks for showing and explaining. I was told to stay away from changing disc brakes on bigger trucks that it was a nightmare. I see nothing even remotely nightmarish. Thanks for all you do Sir.
Lol 1:36 “I’ve gotta drive all the way to work! All the way to work! “
Heavy duty flatbed!! Big difference on those brake hoses, almost thought it was a typo! Lol, take care JC
I watch almost all of your videos and really enjoy them, I must say I was shocked to see you working without jack stands, Mrs JC must not have been with you on this one

I love this channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to do it
I'm a diesel mechanic for a living and I hate doing brakes I would much rather do any other job there is on big truck Then breaks You always do awesome videos
thanks. i dont mind brakes....gets kind of boring. i prefer electrical issues over any repair.
Really enjoyed this video, and thank you for showing that screw driver trick on those washers!!!
Great Job - MR JC Love your Videos as always

Great video JC LOVED IT
Didn't subscribe till now. I like the creativity. Thinking outside of the box!
Loved the video! Thanks for taking us along. Can't wait for Pt2!
Very intelligent man.
Awesome job, great video. Thanks Jc
Have you seen tiger tools has a axel puller makes pulling off the truck axels way easier
Dang J.C. , the stuff you find when tearing things down. That truck had to have been Smokin! As always, nice work!

your welcome to commute to my shop any time! camera lady is busy with other stuff. i am going to be on my own a lot now.

I retired after 25 years at the Freightliner, Mt Holly plant. Chances are that my fingerprints are on that truck somewhere .

I’d pull the front calipers & clean & lube the slides while the wheels were off
Great video! do you have the Part numbers from NAPA for those rear brake hoses?
Love the videos! Not so much the live ones
Your not using Jack stands
Jc can you do a video on air compressors the air dryer and the brake system on these air brake trucks
You sure put a lot of work into some of those trucks. You put a lot of attention into what matters like brakes and running gear, tires etc..... have you ever used Rock Auto and compared pricing..... Amazon too
That’s a sweet looking Freightliner, too bad it has hydraulic brakes, I Love air brakes myself.
Thanks for the details.

Floating calipers! Never worked on class 5 or 6 trucks.....interesting. Like a hybrid between a pickup and a serious hauler....
what is the GVW of that truck. It looks pretty big to me not to be using air brakes. I wouldn't have thought in a million years a truck that size was using hydraulic disk brakes, at least they look hydraulic to me and not air disk.
It is a air over hydraulic under 26001 pound truck. It allows you to hire more drivers, it is non-CDL.
this is a completely hydraulic brake system with electric motor back up pump. no air compressed air assist at all.
You need to ask your snap-on guy about some tap extractors. They work pretty slick. A bit spendy and hardly ever used but worth their weight in gold when you need them. Keep up the good work.
you got part numbers for those prices i about to do my rear
Would be a good service utility truck
If had some luck in the past burning out broken taps with on oxy torch only works when it's a through hole
i thought about trying that but i decided to just drop it off at the machine shop. i messed with it for a little while.....no luck.
You can get a camera mount head band
never looked into that.
I am interested in this truck. What's a good way to get a hold of you.
You can email me "j.c.smithprojects@gmail.com"
Did the bed ever get sand blasted and painted, how did it turn out?
it was finished and sold.
Man how do you find these trucks like you do
this one was brought to me,
Man I would love to have one like this one except extended cab without a motor so I can put a Detroit 50 backed with a Eaton fuller 8 speed
i have a fl106 with a 50 series and a 9 speed trans. it also has a 72" bentz sleeper.
For a broken tap you might consider finding a wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) shop nearby. That's what they do and depending on your shop, it can be a pretty reasonable cost.
Nice old international
👍👌👏
Did you goop the front caliper pins?
J.C. Smith hey you’ve given me info about how to get in contact with you before but I cannot remember how. I am local to you and need something done. Wondering if you’re interested. Thanks.

J.C. SMITH PROJECTS i.c. Or j.c?

That would be a cool video series of making the truck a hauler

I did not see any safety, if them jacks gave way,I do not want to see an obituary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good pricing at napa
Omg that sucks that the tap broke
You payed for that ram so you should get your money out of it...use it
i payed for it so i could use it for hauling my camper and a trailer to haul in stuck i buy....i have no interest in using it for my everyday work truck....i have other trucks that are better suited for that. i just need to get them set up.
That pad is smoked
ohh booo hooo its gettin dirty
Cummins are garbage now...too many def/catalyst/trans/turbo issues..junk the def/egr/stock turbo, then u got a good ram
all the engines with emissions are in the same group. they are all junk......pick the one you like.
My part 2 name magna part 3 snap purple Thor buy empire 6 live part 7
