Glad you finally found one! It would be a perfect truck with a 6.7 Cummins and a Allison much like were optional in the 650-750 trucks. Which im sure you have plenty of for parts 😎 congratulations man.
In my opinion western truck repair is probably the best guy to talk to on powerstroke repairs. I’m real happy you’ve at least got a project to build from. Real nice setup
i like warren and he is knowledgeable but if you want to talk with someone who KNOWS superduty engines, talk with anthony. his channel is "superduty service". you wont find a man that is more knowledgeable, dedicated to precision and accepts nothing less than perfection.
Congratulations, you will love that E - vac system as far as oil changes. You can drain oil from fill tube no mess , or clean drain pan out without making a mess. Definitely happy to see your good fortune!! Love the video’s keep up the good work !! Sincerely Dave!
Congratulations on your service truck. My first service truck was a county retirement . It had 40,000 miles on a factory new 350motor with a turbo 400 . I loved it sadly before i got it set up like I wanted . A drunk driver in a grand Cherokee ran into my tow truck and landed on my service truck . The insurance company got them. I replaced the service truck with another GMC but this one came from the le-may car museum. Nice low miles bigger but now I'm old and retiring so I'll probably sell it
Looking forward to seeing further videos on the repair/replacement of the engine and what you do with this truck. It's hard to run a truck repair/sale/restore business without a really decent service vehicle. Now you have a great one, it seems. Not only do you have the best detailer in the world but also the best looking! Seriously, it is really great to see how well you two work together and the obvious respect you have for each other. When you have that you never really work a day in your life.
i sold this truck. truck prices were so high that i could not pass up the opportunity. when the economy tanks....(because we know its coming) i will pick up another service truck then. i have added more tow trucks and trailers to my collections. so i dont need to do as much of sight work as i once did.
@@j.c.smithprojects They are nice work trucks and so handy. My son has a heavy equipement/truck repair shop and he does a lot of site work. I think he has three of this kind of truck now on the road. His best deal was a three year old Dodge extra cab from texas w/ low miles. Usedin the oil fields 'till the company went out of business. He got a real deal on that one. Good luck to you!
Nice score J.C! 😀 that truck looks great overall. Nice that even though the engine has a problem, it still starts up so you can move it around easily! Hopefully its an easy fix. If not, I would love to see a cummins swap 😍.
Looks like an old United rentals truck. It is set up similar to the truck I’m in. The main differences in the bed are my bottles are in the rear driver’s side box and I have the Vanair arc-n-air on a PTO.
i agree. the tool box would be better on the passenger side but for this truck, that would mean the torch tanks would have to be on the driver side.....no thanks!
That is a nice truck. Don't you have another 6.7 engine lying around from the donor truck for the F-550 project you and Brandon rebuilt the frame on? Interested to see what the inside of a 6.7 looks like.
Haven’t checked much comments here but just in case no one has said it or you don’t know, 2011-2014 6.7 Powerstrokes had a couple problems. Turbo came with ceramic ball bearings so look into a retrofit kit for 2015+ turbo kit, SPE sells an upgraded factory if you want a little more power out of it, it’s not crazy but is good for towing and overall mileage. Address the CP4 HPFP, it will destroy the engine no matter what, it’s only a matter of time if that isn’t already the problem. You can buy a simple disaster prevention kit if you don’t feel like investing in a new or Aftermarket pump. Also Ditch the DPF and EGR if possible, atleast do the DPF and get a tune to disable the EGR. Idle hours kill these trucks with all the emissions equipment attached. Once you delete it, you’ll get way more power and reliability out of it.
It sounded like at least one cylinder is down on compression when you were cranking it over. Leads me to believe something up with the valves. I don't know much about the 6.7... but I'm sure you will be able to educate. Nice truck I look forward to seeing you working on it.
Also 6.7 powerstrokes 2015+ are a good power plant, although not as much aftermarket support as Cummins, you wouldn’t get much more reliability if maintained properly, and the 6r140 that they’re paired with are pretty durable, I mean Allison probably has it beat but I don’t think there would be much of a gain for how much money you’d spend to get one and start fitting it in it.
i will just have to keep it out of "public view". seems like every time i build a truck for myself, someone always wants it more than me and is willing to pony up the dough to get it.
That's one of those early 6.7 powerjokes, they had issues with crank shaft breaking, but this one still runs. Nice set up, I'm sure you can handle an engine swap, even if you didn't have one already, they should be easy to come by as later ones are reliable, not sure if an older ecm would play nice with a newer engine though
For hours push setup then reset. My service truck was $107000 new in 2016. F550 same tank setup and compressor. But mine runs on a PTO. Miller 325 amp welder. The company I work for is replacing a2010 with 55000 miles . Not setup as nice as mine.
You will get the motor sorted out in no time. Awesome rig should provide many years of service and a bonus you didn't pay retail but sweat equity should discourage you from selling once you get it done.
Awesome buy! Some friends of mine who are brothers own a mobile diesel/hydraulic repair company. They only have 550s with similar setups however they are 7.3 powered mid to late 90s models with manual transmissions. They personally drive early 00 model Fords with 7.3s. Altogether they have 7 vehicles with 7.3 motors. I agree on the Cummins if the PS repair is cost prohibitive.
Congrats on your major addition. It would be cool to see you swap a Cummins into it. Pulling the cab off will allow you to treat any rust on the frame and, of course, get to know her intimately. You want to start off the relationship right.
That’s awesome, we got one just like it, first thing is first egr and dpf delete with 5” straight. Thank god I did it egr was already leaking coolant, and gave me better mileage. Also get spe thermostat it runs way more cooler than factory.
Wacko the diddelyo JC just what we all out here need. It’s great truck for you. Bloody big crane with remote control. Woop woop! Great purchase mate. You could lend it to the BGM for some of his bus Detroit engine swaps. Lol. Greetings from Australia.
Got a truck just like that sitting on the yard. Herc bought a bunch of them. Had a ton of problems out of them Mi t M compressor welder combos. I think it has a robin/Subaru tho on the compressor tho
Would be nice to know if someone went through that fuel system and if it has an updated turbo since it’s a 2012. Should do some necessary preventative maintenance while the engine is apart!
Turbos on f550 are different than 250/350. Not quite as problematic. As for fuel systems absolutely. Cp4 pump is the weak link in these things. Also would replace every valve in the head. 2012 450/550 were valve droppers. However, normally it happens much sooner. Still an excellent engine especially if your forced to keep it emissions legal. The 6.7 emissions system is excellent. Far superior to anything out there.
Former hertz/united truck. They always sell them like that. Likely broke a valve. Early 6.7s have that issue. Fyi the 6.7 ford is excellent have 270k on mine-10k hours. Full emissions. Original trans/engine. F550 service truck- 20k weight.
When it says "reset " for system check press the reset (down arrow) it'll give you all that info, plus the oil percentage, but hopefully by now you know that.

I think you ought to be able to fix the engine up, that is the funny thing about fleets when they get to the number or years, it's just iron to them they would rather replace than fix when it gets close to their internal miles or year that they consider a truck expendable I am suprised they left so much of the gear in it, most times I see them the crane stays but everything else is out, some stay with most of their stuff included but you see it reflected in the price. Nice score, now the question is how long can you manage to keep it, I can see a lot of people banging on your door wondering if your going to sell it... even if the engine needs to be swapped you could easily sell this one as is or throw some part ad selling it as a working one... but popping on the intake most times isnt too bad, I have seen more rockers then anything else. look forward to the getting to it video
way too nice for what i am use to! having this truck will save me so much time. have all the tools, parts and fluids on hand all the time. keep it in the shop where it is out of the weather and clean....sounds like a fairy tale.
Nice truck! I have basically the 2015 version of that truck. My F550 has the 7600# Autocrane 11foot bed and crane though. I idle my truck 12-16 hrs a day in the cold Ohio winters or Hot summers. My 2015 has 6500 idle hours so far but only 138K. Only issue so far was my DEF tank heater went bad last year and I blew an outrigger hose on the right side 2 months ago. I do have an upper oil pan leak that is leaking on my front driveshaft and rear wheel seals need replaced.
I didn’t understand all that taking the cab off stuff. Then I started seeing listings with engine problems saying our shop isn’t set up to take the cab off and the truck cab and chassis is $1500 dollars. Or a big truck for $2500 now I get it.
I'm watching this video for the second time and I didn't realize with the first video what you actually acquired,as far as the motor to you that's minor
Not this one, it has a dead miss, low cylinder. Betting valve broke. I have only seen a early build 11 with a crank failure. When the crank brakes on a 6.7 they don’t crank or start. Especially with a plastic lower pan, it doesn’t hold the pieces well.
eventually...i have too many projects in front of it right now to even look at it. i am thinking it will be a valve rocker issue and may have piston / cylinder damage. it may need to come out and be gone through completely.
@@j.c.smithprojects wouldn't be surprised. back when i got my little service truck (350 chevy engine) had a dead miss 0 compression on 1 cyl bent valve bent push rod piston hit the valve, i shoved a junk yard engine in it, later ended up rebuilding the engine that came out of that truck and that's now the engine that is in the jaguar.
Had a 2012 f450 do same thing, rockers got worn, popped push rods off broke lifter retainer and turned a lifter and ate the cam, parts were about 5500$ cad from Ford new cam lifters holders rockers head gaskets and all that, I deemed it as poor maintenance idoling all day and not changing oil enough, fairly easy to do the work Cam was only 230$ cad from Ford
if the cam was ruined by a a turned lifter, all that metal went through the engine. it would have been taken out, stripped down, tanked, heads done, completely inspected and then rebuilt.....or replaced with a superior engine.
Jc Smith I have 84 international making dump truck out of it.. it has the dt 466 with a 5 speed I put a mucie pto on it.. it has 2 gaskets and a metal spacer at idle sounds like the pto's running.. Do u have any suggestions what it might be??
take the shift lever off of the pto. remove the cover. check to be sure the pto is disengaging. if so, check the clearance and play between the pto gear and the pto drive gear in the transmission
From the sounds of it - I'd look for a broken injector hold down bolt and an injector that's popped out - simple fix... it sounded just like a 5.4 Ford with a blown spark plug
Great truck.. 6.7 cummins, 2000 series Allison would be the perfect swap.. and very easy to make emissions legal.. 🙄 although I have a soft spot for mechanical dt466 and dt360 with a p-pump.. I have a 96 3500hd with a 12v 5.9 swap I did 10 years ago still starts and pulls hard every day, 10 years of working the snot out of it on a unknown used motor in the mountains,. I got my money out of it and then some.. I am sure you will do the same,. Now I just need the same truck crew cab flatbed on the west coast.. for the right price so I can swap it..
Looks like a nice setup for sure!
Now I know who to call when I'm broke down! JC and his portable toolbox!
you drive fords with cummins engines......you will never need to make that call!
Portable toolbox lol.
where's part 2 of this truck

The pressure lube equipment is worth a chunk by itself, that rig is the mechanic special. You did good.
Congratulations on the new service truck. From what I have seen, you can fix it one way or the other, and use it for many years.
JC sounds like you’ve got a good candidate for a 12valve Cummins swap.

Had a 2012 f450 do same thing, rockers got worn, popped push rods off broke lifter retainer and turned a lifter and ate the cam, parts were about 5500$ cad from Ford new cam lifters holders rockers head gaskets and all that, I deemed it as poor maintenance idoling all day and not changing oil enough, fairly easy to do the work
Cam was only 230$ cad from Ford
Also new front cover aswell
if the cam was ruined by a a turned lifter, all that metal went through the engine. it would have been taken out, stripped down, tanked, heads done, completely inspected and then rebuilt.....or replaced with a superior engine.
Nice truck for you.
Jc Smith I have 84 international making dump truck out of it.. it has the dt 466 with a 5 speed I put a mucie pto on it.. it has 2 gaskets and a metal spacer at idle sounds like the pto's running.. Do u have any suggestions what it might be??
sounds like you do not have adequate spacing between your pto gear and the pto drive gear in the transmission or you are not fully disengaged.
What do u suggest to fix it I'm having a hard time with it
take the shift lever off of the pto. remove the cover. check to be sure the pto is disengaging. if so, check the clearance and play between the pto gear and the pto drive gear in the transmission
Jc do u have a pto 4 a international with 5speed want to c if my gears in my pto are the same
It's a ford... But if thats what you like more power to you.. Good luck with it. It seems to have nice equipment!
Cant wait to see it all set up and a tour of it!
Nice truck I believe it deserves a new motor
From the sounds of it - I'd look for a broken injector hold down bolt and an injector that's popped out - simple fix... it sounded just like a 5.4 Ford with a blown spark plug
that would put compression into the crank case...this is likely a valve / rocker issue. it is popping back through the intake.
Looking forward to this one.
GOOD LUCK !
Rocker or valve bridge failure. Or bent push rod
Early 6.7 head issues with the valves cracking
I AGREE! valve, rocker, push rod or all failed. popping through the intake.
J.C. SMITH PROJECTS i deal with it everyday If you need any parts hit me up I’m not far from you in Ohio i have shelfs full
what part of ohio
J.C. SMITH PROJECTS My shop located in lancaster but im up in Rivanna all the time with family
ok. that is great. thank you for the offer.
Be interested in this build, I’m looking for a used bucket truck and the ones I can afford are similarly based issues
Reset for system check will give you Total hours and idle hours.
Update on the motor issue?
Great Acquisition, Does the Mi-Ti-M. Have a welding / generator option as well ?
The M- Ti-M. Looks to be in great shape, I think it only generates ,no dinse connections. Great VIDJA’s , nice truck !
So when is this project moving forward?
That’s an awesome Service truck
