Audio Midi Setup Settings (You should see Blackhole 16ch installed):
1. Create Aggregate Device, rename it "QuickTime Player Input", make sure the "BlackHole 16ch" is checked. (If you prefer including your built-in mic sound, then make sure "Built-in Mic" is checked.
2. Create Multi-Output Device, rename it "Screen Record w/ Audio", make sure "BlackHole 16ch" is checked as well as 'Build-in Output", you can listen to it on your phone or speaker.
3. Lastly, go to Settings - Sound, Output should be "Screen Record w/ Audio" (created on step 2)
4. Open QuickTime Player - File - New Screen Recording - Options - Click "QuickTime Player Input" - Record
Enjoy! :)

THANK YOU!!! I am a teacher trying to quickly train up so I can offer classes that can be accessed in person and online, and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this quick and handy guide that saved me HOURS of work. This is exactly what I needed to be able to do, and this was clear and easy to follow. I appreciated the short explanation of how it works so that I could adapt the settings for what I need and create a couple different aggregates (like for audio only recordings of just system sound). Again, super helpful. I've used a few of your videos now and so am subscribing and a new fan.
Thanks a lot Laura!
We appreciate you Laura! Teachers are superhero's during these trying times! :)
Works like a charm on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. Thanks for the tutorial!
Glad it helped!
High Sierra, the OS that people still use because WE need everything to still work! Too many horror stories where apps and plugins just STOP working! Peace.
@@tariosultan Is there a way to set the duration of the recording time (i.e. Set to record for 1 hour) in QuickTime?
@@superdroneuk410 lol correct!
I second that. Perfect, thanks Tario! :)
Thank you so much for such a clear and easy-to-follow video! I am preparing for a saxophone "repertoire" exam for which I need to video my playing over the top of MP3 backing tracks, and all pieces must be recorded back-to-back in one recording, i.e. editing is not allowed. I was tearing my hair out trying to get a reasonable quality recording of the sax over the top of the backing played through speakers. The sax completely over-powered the backing but if I turned up the volume of the backing, I couldn't easily hear what I was playing! After Googling potential solutions, I came across your video which solved my problem within minutes! I can now play the backing tracks from iRehearse, listen to the backing through headphones, play the sax over the top, and record both the backing and sax in realtime using QuickTime Player! Absolutely perfect outcome. You are a star!
Thank you Steve!
This is such a lifesaver and thank you so much! Just want to let you know that it still works today (as long as the BlackHole option is not on top of the checked boxes in MIDI for both the output and input) and is such a relief after searching for a solution for over 3 hours!
Glad it helped!
I am just setting this up and the video is helping understand what is going on. However, I am also working with the Wiki link for BlackHole in their existential audio page for downloading and set up. They do recommend making sure the Built-in Output is on top of the list (Selected as the Master Device) and Drift Correction checked.
I've been searching for this for months!! THANK YOU SO MUCH 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Now I can start creating tutorials on songwriting and music production 🎵🎶🌟
That's awesome! Enjoy! :)
Really appreciated the step through and clarity! I probably tried this 3 times prior but others missed the crucial step of setting up the output in system settings. Thanks again.
Hi Misha, if you still have trouble with it, give this a shot: ruclips.net/video/50BOaOmmOLY/видео.html
For anybody else who may be struggling to determine why their audio is not being recorded, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Microphone and make sure that QuickTime player is checked (which means it will have access).
I followed the instructions in the video but was still not hearing ANY audio (the internal audio AND my mic) on the recordings until I went into the Security settings and checked that box for QuckTime.
Thank you for the great video! I need to record a demo of some features for work and this will help me a lot!
I lost an hour of my life. thanks my dude
Great tip!
For those who don't know, instead of going to settings to switch your output settings, you can simply click the megaphone icon on the menu bar on the top right (where you change volume) and select your "Screen Record w/ Audio" option from there.
I’ve only left a dozen or so comments in 10+ years. Great video man, very clear, helpful, concise. Cheers 🍻
Awesome, thank you!
After a few initial glitches, had this long-standing problem finally solved!! Thanks a lot!!
Great to hear!
Hi again! Just letting you know twice already that I can't thank you enough for the audio screen recording sounded perfectly. Prior to watching your video, the audio I recorded sounded as if I was inside of a can echoing but it's 100% great sounding now. Amazing!
Glad I could help!
Thank you buddy, it worked and now you made my workflow more efficient. I just had to select in certain order things in Multi-output device. Build in audio comes first, and black hole second...any other order or even build in output not selected and I would got no sound for video....I am in version 10.15.5 Catalina. Cheers
I realized the same thing
Thank you so much for doing this tutorial! You explained the whole thing so well, and everything is working! ☺️ 🙌🏻🤘🏻
You're very welcome!
Thanks.... Your instructions were so clear, I was able to rock through a test drive... Cannot wait to begin recording.

Yo BY FAR the most straight forward concise tutorial I've ever seen...also your voice is an asset my dude, maybe look into radio/podcasting? Lol real talk super helpful, I was in the middle of editing on a time crunch when I realized Soundflower became obsolete with the new updated Mac OS. Bravo!!!
Thank you bro! Much appreciated! 🙏🏻
Thank you! Thank you!
Very well explained in detail. I took the steps one by one and it worked without hassle.
I would like to point out that in a newer version of the MacBook, instead of Built-In Output you may see MacBook Speaker, which is basically the same thing.
Plus there are three versions of the BlackHole: 2ch, 16ch and 64ch that you may use as you wish.
Again, that was truly helpful and I am going to check on your channel more often from now on. 👌🙏☺
quick. easy. simple - you are a lifesaver!🔥
Appreciate the clear and concise explanation as well
Thank You !!
Any time!
This is excellent. It worked perfectly for me! I wasn't able to download Soundflower but BlackHole worked for my Mac. Thank you so much Tario!!!
You're welcome!
This is very helpful, but a key component that I finally discovered is:
I finally fixed it by:
Open System Preferences
Open Security & Privacy
Click the Privacy button near the top of the window
On the left column, select Microphone
On the right column, check the box next to iMovie, Garage Band, Quicktime, etc
This fixed the problem instantly for me.
Quick time player isnt popping up on the right collumn

Tario Productions it never seems to surprise me why Apple takes things that could be so simple and creates a problem and huge chore where one doesn’t need to exist! I love my IMac (identical to your setup basically just a couple years older), but man, little problems like this make you pull your hair out!
I only wanted to record AUDIO no video and this actually worked thank you. Instead of NEW SCREEN RECORDING in Quicktime I just chose NEW AUDIO RECORDING and the little ^ button next to the record button I just chose Black Hole Channel. But earlier in the Audio Devices / Quicktime Player input settings I did not select MacBook MICOPHONE. I only wanted the internal audio to record.

Incredibly well-made video. Thank you for actually explaining how it works and being clear with instructions.
This worked perfectly, thank you! I've been searching everywhere for anything that'd work and this finally did it.
Thank you so much! how can I record my internal audio if I am using AirPods or any headphones, if I am using the AirPods my sound option on "screen record with audio", automatically changes if I connect to the Bluetooth, I do not want to record the sound of them, just hear the sound of the video in my AirPods and record it.
you finally can this ?
Even i got the same problem, i couldnt rec my internal sound using airpod on
I had to do some finessing, but worked out in the end. For some reason I had to make sure that the BlackHole 16 ch wasn't the first selection in the Audio Midi on both the QuickTIme Input and Screen Record w/ Audio for me to hear the sound. Thanks!
Thanks for the tip. Helped me to get it to work properly because I couldn't get sound or video files to playback

THANK YOU! Your comment should be pinned cause I think a lot of people are having this problem
Thanks man, totally worked for me. I thought I was the only one going through this and almost lost hope. You deserve to be top answer
This is really good information! Two things that I would like to have seen: 1. description of your Mac hardware and QuickTime Version in the description of both videos. (Great job including the iOS in this video-- but I had to rewind and pause to see the hardware). 2. A clearer explanation of why we care/ need to know this info.... What I (figured out) was that this is for someone that needs to simultaneously present and record digital content with dual sound inputs (my mic | digital media being played) and dual sound outputs (my headphones | audience headphones). Wow! That's a mouthful!
Thank you so much for making this video; I watched your other one and managed to get Soundflower to work, but then it stopped working and I didn't know why. I spent hours going through every single setting, with nothing working, before I found this video and realised that I had recently updated my Mac and it had probably expired. I tried this and it worked perfectly, so thanks!
You're welcome!
Glad it helped!
Everything works perfectly, the only issue I’m having is that when I’m recording the screen with something playing (like a RUclips song as you did) if I speak over it, when I listen to the registration, the volume of my voice is super low and the volume of the song is covering it, is it possible to adjust the volumes?
Also want to know this!

Hey Tario. Clean, detailed, perfect explanation. I had tried this a couple of times without success. With your explanation I had it working on the first shot. BIG THANKS MAN! YOU ACED IT!
I am a teacher. In this age of Covid, I have had to create lessons that are friendly for kids at home. Screen recordings have been a great option, but the choices for the software are limited when it comes to being free. This is going to make a difference in the quality of my recordings and the duration of my recordings. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and thank you to BlackHole!
You're very welcome, I'm so glad I could help!
you have a very cool profile pic considering you're a teacher
Hey, thanks for this tutorial. It has helped to screen record stuff with Audio - but is there a way to screen record with audio whilst wearing wireless earphones? Unfortunately when I use earphones the audio isn’t picking up when I screen record.
I figured out a way to do it with my airpods and it should work w/ wireless earphones as well! While you are editing your aggregate device, select your headphones instead of selecting built-in output. You then should be able to hear the audio through your earphones while screen recording!
@@MykieJ Do you mean in the "QuickTime Player input" or "Screen Record w/ Audio"? I tried both but did not work.

I think I have the same issue, sometime the recording audio is just glitchy or broken up and totally can't use. Is there any one knows how to fix this or salvage the recording that have problem like this?
not really a fix but you could use audacity to record your audio separately and then sync it up in imovie

to expand on this- make sure both sample rates of the new midi audios match :)
@@esaiasiaw wdym
Also is there a way where I can still listen to the audio on my computer whilst quicktime is recording?
You're supposed to listen to the audio on your computer whiling recording. That's why in Audio Midi Setup, when you create Multi-Output Device, you want to make sure the 'Build-in Output' option is checked so you can listen to it on your headphone or built-in speaker.
Tario Productions kaaaæ
Tario Productions I have done this but am still unable to get sound on my Mac book. How do I fix it please?
It worked! (fyi, I have the newer macOS Big Sur v11.1)
I'm able to screen record with only internal audio now since I didn't want any ambient room noise.
Love your super thorough description section of the video with links to your other best videos, love how you put the timestamps in multiple places, loved how you did troubleshooting, loved how you gave background technical info on many steps, love how you made an updated version of the video since last time. holy moly this actually worked, i've been trying to find a solution to this problem for years, thanks so much :)
You are welcome!
If you've done exactly what he's done but you can't hear the audio, make sure that "Blackhole" isn't the first selected in both 'Quicktime player input' AND 'Screen recording with audio' Make sure that at the top of both checked, it is Built in mic / Built in output! (If it still is NOT working, make sure "Quicktime player input" has 'Drift connection' checked FOR BOTH Blackhole and you mic!
Thank you for the tip Savannah!
Thanks so much, I was going nuts and your comment finally got it to work.
Hi Tario - It’s me again, I just noticed that when I changed the Sound Output to “Screen Record w Audio - Aggregate Device” - It won’t let me play my video that I want to record. 🥺
Yeah I have this same issue. It's probably an intentional system to prevent people from illegally recording other peoples works. If you set your output to your mac's default output it should work again, but it's a shame that it does that because I would like to watch RUclips while I have BlackHole enabled. It is sometimes a pain to switch between the two settings before and after recordings.

Thank you, works great. It's not just showing how to do, but an understanding takes place with your brief but thorough explanations. I noted on someone else's comment an affirmation that the Built-in Output needs to be selected as Master Device in the Screen Record w Audio Output we created with Drift Correction checked. That was mentioned in the Wiki provided by the folks that made BlackHole and show how to. But only going by their directions or Wiki did not provide any real understanding and even having screen shots did not show what exactly we were selecting from or why. Again, thank you.

Awesome! Enjoy!
Thank you for the tutorial! Solved the issue I was having. Surprised they have not baked this into QuickTime as default functionality yet in 2023 but...here we are.
Most welcome.
I tried doing this but It didn't work, when I selected the "Screen Recording w/ Audio the audio on my computer didn't work even though I selected built in output.
Sorry for the "negative" comment.
Same here.
Dre AKBAD Thornton ye, I tried everything, you g it just works for some and not for others, so I downloaded this app called capto and that isn’t even working, I guess I am just cursed when it comes to recording a screen 😕
It work for Me I dont know what u did Wrong
It should definitely work, just needs more tinkering. Remember to do 3 things when you record internal audio using Quicktime screen recording in order: (1.) Go to Sound Preferences > Ensure that Input = Input Aggregator, and Ensure that Output = Output Aggregator (i.e. the aggregators that you made which includes the Blackhole 16ch ticked). (2.) In Quicktime settings, make sure that your Microphone = Input Aggregator. Begin screen record. Screen recording with internal audio should be working now with RUclips videos, or stuff on your local computer But if you want this to work in a video conferencing call, you have to go to the Video Conferencing's (e.g. Skype or Zoom's) audio/video settings and change the Speaker to your Output Aggregator (your microphone should still be your regular one, not the input aggregator one). (3.) After you have finished recording, make sure to go back to Sound Preferences > and put the settings back into your non-Aggregator input and non-aggregator output and you should be able to hear sound again. Let me know if this doesn't help though. But yeah, the 3 steps above in the order that it's written in should work with just about anything you're trying to screen record w/audio on your computer. Good luck!
MAGLAYA thank you so much for the advice, sadly I did try that and did some tinkering around and still nothing seemed to work, even though I selected multiple outputs when I made the custom thing for the output, my computer sound still never worked...
I struggled, because it just wouldn't work. But then I went back to security settings and found out that Quicktime didn't have access to microphone. That solved the whole problem. So maybe useful for someone else. System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone (left menu) > tik the Quicktime box.
This was the one step I was missing! Thank you for posting this!
omg!!! thank you so much!!!!, it worked now
I spent two hours trying to figure this out - thank you!!!
nevermind still not working for the vids I am trying to record - only the youtube ones? I am having a tough time
Thanks for the info Margot!
Thank you so much I've been wondering for months and you gave me the answer. THANK YOU!
Happy to help!
Useful as heck! Thank you so much. Worked perfectly for OS Big Sur.
Glad it helped!
I'm literally too dumb to understand any of this I just want to screen record a video so I can save it 🙃
“Everyone is born a genius, but the process of living de-geniuses them.” -Buckminster Fuller
Pause the video in the places where he mentions a new task...especially if he has some subtitles...and then take a screenshot at each one. then all you have to do is slowly go thru all your screenshots and you wont miss any steps...
