How to Screen Record with Internal Audio on QuickTime Player

- QuickTime player is one of the easier and fastest ways to record your computer screen.
I’ll show you exactly how to record your screen using Quicktime player on a Mac desktop or laptop.
But there is one thing that is a little hard to do with Quicktime player and that is recording internal audio. If you want to capture audio from a video playing on your computer or gameplay audio, you’ll have to do a couple of more things that I wanted to cover in this video.
For simple screen recording, open the QuickTime player on your computer.
Go to File and choose screen recording.
You can choose to record the entire screen or just a selected portion.
You can choose a save location and you can also choose a different microphone for better sound quality.
If you want to record internal audio, you need a plugin for QuickTime.

And here is an Amazon affilate link to my recommended microphone, Shure MV7 USB Microphone
amzn.to/4b7w9OO
Once you install this, open the Audio MIDI setup.
Press plus on the Botton and choose to create the aggregate device.
You can name this QuickTime player audio. Check on Blackhole and if you want to record your talking at the same time, also check on the built-in microphone or another mic.
Then create another one with the multi-output device and label it screen recording with audio.
Choose both build-in output and Blackhole 16ch. Make sure build-in audio is selected and on top, so you can hear yourself.
The last thing is to go to system preference and go-to sound. For output, choose a screen recorder with audio.
Go back to Quicktime and choose QuickTime player audio as a microphone option.
Now when you record your screen, it will also record internal audio.
For more advanced options, use another free app called OBS and I will link to an OBS tutorial below.

It works but it doesn't let me change the volume? why is that?
hey man im sorry I was doing my stuff when I recorded it was only showing like outer things like RUclips videos and such but not in game like video game audios it won't record could you help me? if no that's ok
The fact that apple didn't include a simple option to capture internal audio is beyond me...
Fact!
Absolutely. Come on, Apple!
Also, why is this comment 1 yr old but the last replies have been in the last 2 hrs 😂

i’m not even joking when i say this. you are legitimately the first person whose video tutorial was not only easy to follow but you answered all of the little questions in my head as i followed your steps! thanks so much for this video!
my thoughts exactly. i've been looking for *this* video for ages!
Yes bro fr
🙏 yep
You are an EXCELLENT educator. No filler, hemming and hawing, GREAT step by step presentation with clarity. Thank you!
I went through like 10 different videos which all had complicated methods and didn't work. But you organized this video with easy steps and it worked! This video saved me, thank you so much sir.
This tutorial got me literally IN and OUT bro! Completely clear, not to fast and straight to the point. Gave a Brief introduction, you had the video organized to where we would know where to begin our process for the users that are already familiar with QuickTime. This video was completely PHENOMENAL. 10/10🍻 GREAT WORK❤
This is how to RUclips
You literally saved my career bc of this. My boss is giving a lot of instructions over the meeting and I can’t write all of it down or I can’t remember. Now I just record the meeting and I can back track whenever I want. Thank you!! ❤
You can put the video in an app called descript to get a text transcription too
Thank you so much! I've been trying to find a way to record internal audio on a Mac for YEARS. Audacity, Soundflower integration, Logic Pro, QT, everything. Dozens of articles, countless videos. No one explained it as simply and step-by-step as you. This made my day! 🙏
Hey pls help me bro! Why don’t I hear the sound on the screen recording when I play Logic Pro?
OMG...I have been looking for something like this for DAYS...trying all different screen recording apps that were so complicated I couldn't ever get them to work right or save the recording to a place I could find it. Thank you so much for actually explaining things clear enough to understand for a beginner. It actually worked!!!
Thank you so much!! 🙏😀This Worked 💯

I came back to this video just to say thank you. Every since I've learned this method of recording my game videos, I've been through my journeys as a gamer. Thanks again!
I had been trying for months to add sound to Movavi's screen recording (they hadn't upgraded to MacOS Sonoma so no sound). This worked!!! Your instructions were so clear and easy to follow. Thank you!!
Mate, you literally saved me! I had spent hours over 6 days creating a video that I thought I had lost completely given that it would not export. Thank you so much for teaching me this and saving my project!
how is this video relevant to your comment?
I cannot express how perfectly done this video was. Bravo.
Thank you for putting together this clear and simple explanation. I recently got a Mac. When I had windows I watched dozens of video and tried as many installs. I tested the plug in you recommend with headphone/microphone, built in, and internal screen recording only. It all worked great... after I marked the right boxes. Thanks again.
This video has helped me like 10 times already. Black hole randomly deleted itself off my Mac so I had to scrap my old presets made and redo them, but it all worked well, thank you
LOVE YOUUUUU. Thank you!!! To anyone worried that there is no "built in output" option - don't worry just choose "external headphones" and follow everything else - it still works
This helped me so much. Thank you!
Excellent tutorial, clear and concise explanations. It shows you, step by step, how YOU can do it, and not "watch me, that's how I do it". Many thanks, it works smoothly!
I literally NEVER leave reviews, but I’m here to tell you that IT WORKS! 😊 Thank you so so much!
This was fantastic thank you! I needed a way to record internal audio and you only just made this tutorial so great timing!
no bs, straight to the point. love it. thanks a lot!
you're a bloody hero! I've been in a mess trying to pull this off and you came to my rescue - thank you!!
Super easy to follow. Great detail and description. Not only a how to but you understand what and why you are doing it. Well done, thank you.
I've been looking for this solution for quite a long time! Thank you very much!
Simple explanation, super clear and works perfect!
i using a headset and i still cant here, Any tips?
This video was great!!! It works! I have a tip for using this though:
I messed around a bit with the MIDI and whatnot, and for those of you interested in recording internal audio while connected to earphones or earbuds, the only thing you need to do is go to audio MIDI Setup, create a new Multi-Output device, and check off the Black Hole (first) and your connected bluetooth device (second). When you go to screen record, make sure you choose your output to be one with your bluetooth device!
Bro i am not able to sort them out can you further elaborate from the beginning of opening midi and then how to proceed
The part about using Black Hole as an aggregate input device for recording will save me SO MUCH TIME on my RUclips recordings. Thank you so much!
This setup is really easy and simple compared to the previous setup I was using. Thanks a lot! 🙌 Subscribed!
this is pain
Hey man, just wanted to say this video helped me out a TON. I thought I was going insane trying to figure out how to get audio in my QT screen recording. Can't believe it's not a built-in option, but really appreciate you putting out this workaround!
Thank you so much!!! This actually worked after watching 10 other videos and spending 2 hrs trying to find a solution! Best 9 mins spent today
I have been trying to find a video like this for months!! thank you so much i really love how hard you worked in this and you got straight to the point!!
This a really easy to follow tutorial! Well done! I just can't believe apple doesn't offer anything to record internal and external audio at the same time!
One of the most accurate and clearest tutorial on any subject I watched ! - No glitches.. Smooth as silk !!

Great video. Very detailed and slow enough to catch all the details and without obnoxious music. Very nice.
Life is easy when you find the right instructions. Thanks Sir!!!
This is the perfect video to follow .. I am brand new to mac I've been a windows user for 20 years and just started using a mac less than 11 months ago and this video made it feel like a piece of cake THANK YOU!!
Side note: this is a little tricky to complete if you using Bluetooth headphones but it was still very easy to figure out
i am like u but i’ve only had my macbook pro for a few weeks. i have no idea how to use it bc i am windows trained and it’s frustrating right now. i miss not having right click!!!
How did you do it with bluetooth headphones? 😅
Okay, I got it! Instead of clicking built-in audio for input, click your bluetooth headphones!
@@prettysarah you do have right click lol, you have to click with 2 fingers
I've never been good with tech and have always got my brother or dad to set up stuff like this on my computer. But tonight I was determined to figure this out by myself because it's 1 am and everyone's asleep and with your incredible tutorial I DID IT! I'm so proud of myself that I figured out something computer complex by myself!!!!! (with your help of course) Thanks so much!!!!!
Congrats bro, that's incredible to hear, I am proud of you too!
best video ive found on screen recording you saved me so much time and money in this 1 quick video why can't all explanations on the internet be like this
This man is a legend. Absolutely smooth tutorial, no nonsense stuff! Thanks a lot
Great tutorial. Just a heads up, the recording only last around 40 mins then the audio will starts to crack n no sound eventually. I was recording for 2 hr 40 mins non stop so yeah, just wanna let anyone knows. Better to stop at 40 mins then record again
Did you figure out why this happens?
Good to know. Thanks!
Hey I saw your comment and was concerned myself. So I tried it and recorded for almost 50 minutes without a problem. Do you happen to have an older computer? Were you able to figure out what the issue was?
@@cinemasteve85might be storage
I had the same issue but audio stopped after 12 minutes. It wasn't a storage issue and my Mac is only 1 year old. I don't understand why.
For those of you who can't record in stereo, I've experienced the same and after messing around i found that the 16ch for some reason records in mono not even 2 channels lol so I had to download the 2ch one and it works great, it started recording in stereo ✌🏻
Dude THANKS ! I've been looking for such answers the all day, now I can finally work ffs. I bless you and the RUclips
Wait do you mean that your internal audio will be mono if you use the 16ch one?
@S.M.HassanShah thanks for the solution! i tried this but it's not the setting i want... so on the "quicktime input" section on the audio/midi menu, there are 3 channels and blackhole takes the first two or last two channels by default. i want the microphone to take the middle channel so i can hear my voice in the middle. but now it's coming from either left or right. did you manage to fix that too? thanks in advance.
It would be interesting to know how to do that, I personally never tried to monitor my voice while recording if that's what you're referring to, but happy to know some people found it helpful :)
Thank you thank you thank you. Tried so many times over the years and you have the clearest and easiest instructions to follow. well done tutorial!
oh man, I love a great tutorial. thank you!

@@Howfinity maybe I misunderstood something but is there a way to record a screen for example with yt video with a sound but without background sound (my voice) ?
@@wwjol I have the same question. I followed all the instructions, but in the end, the background sound was also recorded.
@@farshad.sadoughian unfortunately no reply from @Howfinity
@@Howfinity Why does black hole need your name?
This worked very well! Thank you very much for taking the time to produce the video detailing the installation and configuration. You should add that QuickTime records everything in the highest definition and the files are huge. But we may open the file and select File -> Export As and then choose a lower quality to save in a smaller size. This is very useful!
I can't seem to get anywhere with trying to get the file size smaller as for just a one min video it is 5mb and when I save it smaller it only goes to 3mb. Is this the only option to reduce the file size?
Absolutely perfect tutorial. Still works almost exactly the same even 2 years later!
I just started my business and one of the main tools will be to be able to record instructions and whatever goes on on my screen with audio. thanks you are a positive vibe, man! and so smart and clear. I'll subcribe to your channel and will recommend it.!!! THANK YOU!
for those who can't hear audio while recoding, go to audio midi then screen recording and tick the headphone you are using
If you ever get a bad distortion noise when recording after you followed his steps and you test it out. Make sure to fixed it by going
into Audio Midi Setup
Checking the drift The correction box next to blackhole 16ch
For both the Quick Time Input and the Screen Recording Audio that you had renamed
I don't know if you know the answer to this, but why does it need your name?
Thank you sm!
Thank you
Thank you for the comment. It helped very much 🙏
THIS IS AMAZING!!!!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!! The search has been insane for a week now. I almost paid for apps to screen record with audio!
Can't believe this functionality is not out of the box, thanks for the help!
This was really helpful, thank you. Is there a way to "set it up" so that the system preferences defaults back to the original/regular audio setting, after you complete a Quick Time screen recording?
Did you receive any feedback on this?
I'm wondering too. My last computer (set up by a shop that is no longer in business) had it so it would switch automatically
I don't have a Built-in Output option for creating the Multi-Output Device. Any ideas?
I don't have it either...
me either as well
Thank you so much for the video! I used your video as a resource as I had difficulty with recording internal audio via screen recording on your MacBook, excellent and smooth instructions!
I remember having to do quirky things like this back in the day on my old Macbooks. Didn't think I'd have to in 2024. Thanks!
Hello! The build it option is not showing for me? I followed the video. Is there anything I need to do additional to get this option? Thanks
It’s not showing for me either 😢
I tried several times and it's still not working. I'm not sure what the issue is....I'm so frustrated!! great video and explanation btw
Thank you so much I've been trying to figure out how to do this for a few days but you explained it super fast! Means a lot keep making your vids!
Clear. Concise. I followed along. I learned how to implement exactly what I wanted to learn, gained insight to extra info and terminology. I also had no questions at the end of the video pertaining to why I came. as far as informational videos on YT go I am pretty sure this is the best one I have ever used. Easily. Subbed for sure.
What if "built in output" isn't appearing on our multi-output device setup? I don't know why it's not there but I also don't know how to fix that.
did you figure it out
I have the same issue
@@devinaayona3785 same issue here. anybody figured it out?
Built in output is your computers speakers, click that one
@@anabelsolis211 you’re a legend. Thank you 🙏
Thanks! Worked for me aside from two things. I'm on a M1 Mac Mini running OS 11.5.2 and when I created the "Multi-Output Device" in Audi Midi Setup and "Built-In output" isn't an option. It worked when I selected "External Headphones". But now I notice sound output device is selected in my sound preferences there is a "!" icon next to the speaker icon in the Audio Mini Setup app. Any idea what that means?
did you find a solution? I'm struggling with the same thing
@@anistonfisher7722 Everything worked on my end and I haven't run into any issues regarding the "!" I mentioned seeing now.
dude you have no idea how happy I am that I found your video I was a bout to give up on finding a way to screen record with audio I can't thank you enough I had watched 5 videos of people using different softwares but all where too complicated .
Utterly brilliant. - thank you so much for the sound recording piece and Blackhole!
Super easy and simple to follow the setup. Thank you so much! 😉
Hey I really appreciate the tutorial, no problems with what you demonstrated, but after getting it to work I'm having trouble finding a way to keep the speakers from just playing at full blast. My audio keys are disabled and I can't adjust the volume in system preferences, or even mute them. I thought it might've been a setting in Audio MIDI Setup but I'm just not very familiar with this stuff. I just wanna record mic audio without blowing up my damn ears (or getting any sound in the voiceover)
Probably a very beginner problem but not one I feel like I can find a solution for
Just plug in a pair of headphones and keep the volume to the max. Problem solved
Even better if you have an old broken cabled pair
I'm having the same problem
me too
same here and I do not understand why it is happening
Tip, if you want to record while you are hearing in your headphones (like in a zoom):
In MIDI create an agregatte device with black hole, built-in-microphone, and external headphones. Create a multi-output device with black hole and external headphones
The rest is the same but just select this new options
Cheers!
Very helpful, thank you
THANK YOU A TON
The BEST tutorial I've seen to solve this problem. Thank you!
thanks for this video! it is absurd to me that i had to search through like 6 youtube tutorials to find the answer to this that actually worked, because i am quite technologically inclined, but was stumped here.
Great info, but I’m finding that the mix - volume comparison between the microphone and computer sounds - isn’t great: Specifically, the microphone is very quiet compared to the computer sounds. That, even though my mic-preamp has its clipping light occasionally lighting.
Is anybody else seeing that? Is there a mix adjustment somewhere in this setup?
Gary, I think you should be able to set the mic input in System Preferences under sound.
Facing the same problem, it is true that you can pre-adjust the mic volume in the preferences but Im looking for a multi-track video file exported solution!!
I've tried this several times. It worked great. However, there is bad distortion noise in the internal audio that is recorded usually around the 30mins - 45mins mark. How do I resolve this other than cutting off the recording every 30mins? Thanks.
I'm having the exact same issue only around the 20min mark.
@@curtcrandall5157 sorry to hear you’re facing the same. I’ve tried to uninstall and reinstall and well, not sure why this is happening. I used to be able to record beautifully!
I’ve usually doing the recording on zoom or teachable. I wonder if the platforms were the issue?
Hi, I had the same problem but I fixed it by going into Audio Midi Setup and checking the drift correction box next blackhole 16ch on both the Quick Time Input and the Screen Recording Audio. This fixed it perfectly.

Fantastic video... clear and super helpful. Saved me hours of poking around related to additional internal sound recording solution. Well done!
I looked at a couple of videos on this. This was the first one I came across that got it right with two things for mac Sonoma 14.2. make sure in 'sound effects' that it is set to screen recording and if you have a scarlett solo, let it be first in the MIDI screen recording setup then "Built-in Output then Blackhole. Great job.
