Seriously, Garry, the starting multiple QT windows at the same time.... Where has that been all my life?! LOL. Ever so often I compare videos, and until this lesson, I didn't know a dual start was a kb shortcut away. Thank you so much!!
One of the topics I wanted to look for but never did because I keep forgotting. Suddenly I see this on the feed. Thanks Gary. You sure have read my mind.
The feature of making quick video recordings will come in handy with the new Ventura OS once you can use your iPhone camera with your Mac. Thanks, Garry for bringing it to light.
Another thing a lot of people are not aware of is that GarageBand can open videos created and/or edited using QuickTime Player or whatever else, make changes to the audio with the power of all the GarageBand facilities and save it back to the video. Came extremely handy recently when I recorded a video using QuickTime Player, the camera in my iMac and a microphone connected via a Scarlett Solo USB interface. Because the microphone is in the first input of the interface the sound is recorded only in the left channel of the video audio track. Once open in GarageBand it's trivial to make it mono so both left and right have the sound, and while there I could easily do a bit of EQ, compression and de-esser and get the level of the audio optimal. Then easily put that audio onto that clip and Bob's your uncle :)
You number one for information Gary. And you must get hundreds of questions. So I'll understand if you don't replay to mine. My question is my quicktime player only records for 58 seconds. Is it possible for it to record for longer time?
This was very good and thorough. I’m always looking for a way to display QuickTime movies full screen on a second monitor while still being able to use other apps on my desktop on my main screen. I could use another app from a third-party, but I think QuickTime should be able to handle this.
Many new tips but the best one was to convert image sequence to movie file. That I didn't know. I create stop motion animations and this tip is useful. Thank you!
Great video! What software are you currently using to record this video to show up in the right corner in a square like that? I see Quicktime player doesn't allow you to do circles/sqaures on movie recordings.
Rather useful video! Although, I got here specifically to find out how to play a bunch o videos in sequence, is there any way to do that? Like, to create a video playlist....
brilliant video Gary. I have a question can we change the close, minimise (yellow and green or red button) button color or style to it before it was on Mac OS X ? is it possible?
Hi, thanks for the excellent video. I use Quicktime as my default audio player. If I double click my audio file in Finder, Quictime opens it and I have to click one more time in Quicktime play button to start playing the music. Please, is it possible to get the file to play automaticaly in QT just by double clicking it in Finder? In other words, double click the file would cause QT to open AND star playing the music.
I don't think so. But if your goal is to quickly hear the audio file contents, then use Quick Look instead. Select the file and press spacebar. But this won't work well if you want to listen to music. In that case, the Music app is probably a better choice. Why not have your music in your Music App Library -- that's what it is for.
I knew you could do a lot of these but you've shown me some new tricks. I'll stop complaining about the editing features that were not carried over from QuickTime Pro 7 that I still use under Snow Leopard on my OG white polycarbonate MacBook. I'm still having trouble stitching together two halves of a full movie. It seems to be working until it bails with "An Error Occurred." I assume the segments are simply too big. Same problem when I try to separate two full movies that were inadvertently stitched together.
I became to love your channel. You tech tips are smart, intelligent and interesting! learned a lot from those. I have a q: I need to convert/ subtract/extract etc text from audio/ video quicktime files. How do I do it? tried many things it did not work:(
Not sure what you mean. Is the text shown in the video? You could stop the video on that frame and try to use Live Text to select and copy it. But what do you mean by "audio?" Is it spoken?
Great video! But I have a question. My video footage from my camera SD card won’t play on QuickTime. It says the MOV is not compatible. What do I do? I tried numerous times even re-format my SD card but it doesn’t work. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Two different things. As for modifying a PDF, what do you mean exactly: annotating it or changing the actual document? As for 360 videos, Final Cut Pro and other pro apps can handle that.
Hi Gary, Many thanks - excellent... Quick question.. on the Maximum setting on QT player when recording is uses a LOT of disc space (like, way more than say 4K) ... approx 500MB per minute... can this be right? Do people really record this way? Kind regards, Sam
Yes. You can export from QuickTime Player after you record with more compression, but then it won't look as sharp. Depends what you are doing with the video.
I'm missing the "Add to Selection and Scale” option from the Edit menu. In Quicktime classic, when audio went out of sync due to editing, you could cut the audio, then put it back using "Add to Selection and Scale” to make it sync correctly. Then select Save (not Export). There's no workaround as the beauty of editing with Quicktime is you don't need to re-compress the video file. Anyway, hoping this option comes back
Depends on the type of subtitles. If you want proper subtitles (that can be turned on or off) you would do that using video editing software that had that feature, or subtitle software. But if you want it in something like RUclips, you simply add the subtitles in the RUclips interface. If you want something permanently imprinted on the video that can't be turned on or off then just use titles in any video editor, like iMovie.
What version of QuickTime are you referring to? My MacBook Pro originally has QuickTime 10.4. I did a update to 10.6 and there is a big difference. I would like to know what version is in the RUclips video.
QuickTime Player has been at version 10.5 for a while, and is currently at 10.5 for Ventura. This video is from 4 months ago, so using Monterey which would have had QuickTime Player 10.5 as well.
I was wondering if I could use QT and an HDMI to USB adapter to use my iMac for video games, roku streaming, etc.? Or would I need a capture card? (Not interested in recording, really, just using my IMac as an integrated monitor.). Thanks!
Well, you probably could, using something like the Elgato CamLink, but it would be overkill. You could get a bigger TV cheaper. Or just stream directly on your Mac (At least for streaming services like Netflix, etc).
Thanks. Was able to trim/edit following your instructions. Will not let me save or move as it says QTP does not support the format of video MPEG-2. Are there any workarounds? I'm struggling to find a way to trim these videos on my Mac. TIA.
Always good but the 'video from image sequence' part does not deal with frame rate or how to edit the resulting video. I fed in some standard screenshots and the result was unwatchable. How do you control and edit?
May have mentioned before, but boy it'd be nice to record the screen (WITH AUDIO playing on the mac) from this app. Odd that i can use screen recording on ipad that will do just that, but for some reason, on the mac, QT will not record audio with the screen recording (e.g., like a zoom call or other presentation etc..)
A RUclips video, on RUclips? That's web video and not using QuickTime Player. Or is this a video you created and you have the original file? If so, look at #7 in the video. There is an option to export video only.
Gary what program do you recommend is best to use with mac to do file conversion from .wmv to .mp4? I have recently switched to mac and found Quick time doesn't linke .wmv or .AVI file type videos.
QuickTime Player should be able to handle those, but remember those file types are just containers that can include many different types of videos (different compression types and settings, for instance). So it could just be the one you tried wasn't compatible. If not, maybe something like VLC will do it. But I'd always try QuickTime Player first.
What version of Quicktime Playing are you using? I've been using 10.4 and it does not have Remove Audio or Remove Video in the menu. Also tried the older Quicktime Player 7.
Whatever version was current 11 months ago when the video was made. So whatever shipped with macOS Monterey. The current version is 10.5 and I see both of those in the Edit menu when I have a video open that has audio.
Garry, I really appreciate your videos and it really helps me a lot, but if you ca do some of the videos you are making a little bit slow, that would be appreciated. YOu are doing a great job and I really like all the videos you make and share with us. Still sticking with your videos about MAC and I am passing the word around and asking people to subscribe to your channel. Keep it up.
You can adjust the playback speed of a RUclips video. Just hit the Gear Icon (on the iPad it is at the top right) and click on "playback speed." Choose a speed as slow as needed.
If your movie is a compilation of several clips joined, is it possible to change playback speed (or any A/V control) for each clip separately? For example, I changed playback speed for one clip before adding it, but after I added it to the main movie I was making, the whole movie's speed changed.
In QuickTime Player, the speed control is just for playback. It doesn't change the video itself. If you want to actually speed up or slow down clips, you'd do that in iMovie.
Is there a way to make and automator file that launches a new audio recording in QuickTime and has the volume all the way up? I've tried making a workflow and recording what I do but it fails when I actually try it.
So in Shortcuts (why use Automator?) You can run an AppleScript that is just "set volume input volume 100" and that sets the input volume to 100%. I assume that's what you mean by "volume." Then use the Record Audio Shortcuts action to record.
I am having a issue with quick time player , I did screen recording and then did editing of videos like trim and split of screen recording. Once i convert it into hd format , it run succesfully in my mac . But when i am uploading same video on youtube its audio is getting cracking sound. (I am combing 2-3 screen recording together. but with same resolution 4k and then making them convert them all in one.) It is having issue with some video while in other videos it works completely fine. Can you please help me in this!!!
Garry can you make video on HOW to add ons to QuickTime Player and more specific HOW to play MKVs video files with Quick Time Player! I am new to APPLE try to stay / use native apps everywhere I can. Most of my subscriptions / windows software is not compatible with Apple OS. For video I got licence of PowerDVD for windows but Cyber link does not support Apple.
Its disappointing that you cannot connect the newer iPhones ie: iPhone 12 to QuickTime and view in Landscape. It will show on screen in Portrait. I kept my IPhone 6xPlus for this reason. I’ve looked for something equivalent but cannot find anything other than use a different camera app but then I loose quality if I do not use the apple camera.
What is it you are trying to do, exactly? Just view your iPhone's screen on your Mac? For what purpose? There are other solutions, but it depends on what you are really trying to do.
@@macmost Record to iphone but view what I’m recording on MacBook screen so I know I’m still in frame. I think since apple 11, the on board camera app no longer goes to landscape in QuickTime. I kept my iPhone 6s Plus so once I hook up iPhone 6 to QT and image from the iphone camera turns to landscape on the MacBook. I record direct to the iphone only. I want to use the newest camera setting but not able to because the image will not turn to landscape even tho it will record in landscape, it defeats my purpose to see what I’m doing. I have iPhone 12 plus. I’ve tried other camera apps but I find videos are not as sharp as the onboard camera. Hope this makes sense. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
@@BearyWishes Maybe try using AirPlay? Starting with Monterey you could set your Mac to be an AirPlay receiver. Then you can mirror your iPhone's screen to your Mac that way. support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/set-up-your-mac-to-be-an-airplay-receiver-mchleee00ec8/mac
For Touch Bar MBP's are there shortcuts for screen recording to: Start, Pause, Resume record, End Record that can be created? I'm a novice and struggle with narration and editing
Thank you for your reply. I’ve tried looking at Camtasia and VLC with no luck. I’m guessing most don’t need to pause when doing screen recordings. Thank you for your video btw - lots of helpful tips!
*PLEASE HELP* I uploaded a video with airdrop to my MacBook and QuickTime is playing the video in a much worse quality than was taken on my iPhone. Will it be like that if I post it anywhere from my MacBook or is it going to be better quality? I don’t understand why it looks good on my phone and then trash on QuickTime..
From which iPhone app did you AirDrop it? Did you change the window size for QuickTime Player? Did you check the video dimensions on your iPhone, and then compare with the video dimensions you can see with Get Info in QuickTime Player?
@@digitaljourneys396 Perhaps you are exporting from iMovie at a lower resolution? GO back to your original clip (not the one that went though iMovie) and AirDrop that.
@@macmost i read it on steam, i wanted to export an animation and steam said i needed quicktime, so i looked in “discussions” and a lot of people said it was dangerous.
@@CheddarCheeseJohnson What? What "people." Point to sources. Claiming that QuickTime "isn't safe" is ridiculous. It is part of macOS and there is nothing "unsafe" about it.
@@macmost instantaneous screen capturing*. In Quicktime, (as shown) you have to press the "Copy" option (or Ctrl + C), then head over to an image editor app like MS Paint (yes, I am on Windows 10) and paste it there, then got to manually save it as a preffered image-format. But gets you only the resolution you watched it in. (So, if you got 4k footage, but watch it on a 1080p monitor, your copied image will have the 1080p resolution. VLC gets you full-sized images from the footage.) In VLC, you just choose your frame you want to screen capture and hit the Shift + S command and get a instantaneous screen capture in your favorite file-format. I hope that clears things out for you. @@macmost I watched a boring video about it. A guy can do that by playing woth services in the control panel. Can set some commands there but it was hard for me to understand coz i got no knowledge about programming
@@ProAttique Not sure what you could mean by "services in the control panel" as that sounds like Windows, not Mac. A long time ago there used to be another screen recording option that had a way to pause, but if you want that now just get a third-party app. Plenty to choose from.
@@macmost thank you for the reply. I’m sorry to say about the control panel as it is different on macOS. The guy was playing with some command prompts. As we can set some services to extract audio, or do other functions inside macOS. So in the video the person was dealing with some sort of command prompts. To make it more clearer, it was about creating shortcuts as we do on iPhone. I use OBS studio, but I don’t know why it is lagging too much even though I’m using it on Mac M2. As a content creator, I face a lot of difficulties in screen recording, and facecam in OBS. Personally, I can’t afford any ScreenRecorder if the options are for the paid one.
@@ProAttique So you make content as your work but can't afford a screen recording app? They aren't expensive. But if you really want to stick with free, remember you don't have to pause screen recording. You have other options. Keep recording and then edit out portions you don't need. Or, record multiple clips and then edit them together after. There are so many solutions for you.

QuickTime Player should be able to handle those, but remember those file types are just containers that can include many different types of videos (different compression types and settings, for instance). So it could just be the one you tried wasn't compatible. If not, maybe something like VLC will do it. But I'd always try QuickTime Player first.
Hey Gary - is there a way to queue videos to play in QT? Or any other app in Mac OS?
You mean just have a playlist and they automatically play one after the other? Something like VLC will do that.
(I am combing 2-3 screen recording together. but with same resolution 4k and then making them convert them all in one.)
It is having issue with some video while in other videos it works completely fine. Can you please help me in this!!!
Hard to guess what could be wrong. Maybe look for a commonality between the videos? Are you uploading via the RUclips web interface?
How about a playlist? Can you make one?
QuickTime Player doesn't have that.
You'd want to just get a third-party video app for that. Maybe VLC or the like?
@@macmost Thank you Garry!
No, not with the built-in recorder. If you need keyboard shortcuts though perhaps a third-party recording app will do better.
Thank you for your reply. I’ve tried looking at Camtasia and VLC with no luck. I’m guessing most don’t need to pause when doing screen recordings. Thank you for your video btw - lots of helpful tips!
@@usmcgoatman5464 ScreenFlow definitely does it. I use it (pausing with a keyboard shortcut) all the time to make my tutorials. macmost.com/what-i-use
👍🏻 can you view cctv camera through QuickTime?
Technically if it provided a standard format stream with a URL you could. But it all depends on what the software of the camera does in that regard.
is there a way to add text to a video on quicktime player, I've been looking for a way to do this?
No. Use iMovie for that.
Is there a way to blur the image using quick time player?
No.
I’ve just learned 23 new things I didn’t know I could do.
What’s the name of the program u used to make that

*PLEASE HELP* I uploaded a video with airdrop to my MacBook and QuickTime is playing the video in a much worse quality than was taken on my iPhone. Will it be like that if I post it anywhere from my MacBook or is it going to be better quality? I don’t understand why it looks good on my phone and then trash on QuickTime..
From which iPhone app did you AirDrop it? Did you change the window size for QuickTime Player? Did you check the video dimensions on your iPhone, and then compare with the video dimensions you can see with Get Info in QuickTime Player?
@@macmost the iPhone XR. I first airdrop directly from iMovie and then I tried to send it from camer roll.
@@digitaljourneys396 Perhaps you are exporting from iMovie at a lower resolution? GO back to your original clip (not the one that went though iMovie) and AirDrop that.
gary what about stitching a 4k 60 video to a 1080p 60 what happens.
Try it and see.
Hey gary, I’ve heard quicktime isnt safe “anymore” is that true?
What do you mean? Not safe how? QuickTIme describes a lot of things. What did you read, exactly, and where?
@@macmost people say that it may cause damage to your computer due to the software being outdated.
@@macmost thank you.
Hi, I just want to record a video of Bank of America for a short demo, how do I record that?
Not sure what you mean. A video of a bank? Like the outside of a building? Or do you mean a website?
Can I zoom into a video using QT?
No. You'll need to use iMovie or better for that.
aww, no instant screen cap is kind of a bummer to me. gotta stick to good ol' VLC player then 👀💧
What do you mean by "no instant screen cap?"
VLC gets you full-sized images from the footage.)
In VLC, you just choose your frame you want to screen capture and hit the Shift + S command and get a instantaneous screen capture in your favorite file-format.
I hope that clears things out for you. Have a nice week!
@@EEEEEE1337 Sounds like you have to do a lot of screen capturing in your work, so yes a specialized tool would be better.
i searched so may websites and youtube videos but could not find how to set hotkeys to quicktime player to let's say pause and unpasue screen recording
You can't. There's no option for that. If you really need that, a lot of third-party screen recording tools offer it.
