- You can make the vast majority of your videos using only three Mac apps: iMovie, Keynote, and QuickTime Player. These apps are free and come bundled with every Mac (at least at the time of making this video). You can use these apps to create all types of videos - from news & information to learning and reaction videos. It just takes a little ingenuity, and watching the videos on my channel, of course. 😉

I made weekly films for an Outdoor Education company in California for fifteen years, using nothing more than a canon camcorder, and iMovie. The film industry is ridiculously over-inflated.
Wow, I didn't realize all what you've shared, me being an owner of a MacBook Air M1 and starting my own RUclips channel. You're a savior, buddy. Please do share more skill-based tips for us beginners in video editing and other video-making stuff. You're a blessing! Thank you!
I 100% totally agree with you that these three apps are all you need to produce high quality professional looking videos for posting on social media. There really is no reason to burden yourself with trying to learn Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premier. Unless you are planning to produce independent films or commercials for high end clients. And thanks to your simple and clear tutorials I am loving it.
I am in college right now, they gave me this MacBook Pro and said go to work! I have 3 videos due this week and you sir saved my life. I am subscribed and tuned in!
NIce! What stuff do you want to know how to do?
The only thing I don't understand is why you don't have 1.5 million subscribers. Seriously, your tutorials are always great.
iMovie is all I use for editing as it's all I know how to use. The M1 iMac's webcam is my camera. Very simple videos this way.
Inspirational! We are a modestly successful, Sydney Suburban History RUclips channel, who already use iMovie and Keynote, but you have challenged us to see what we have overlooked in all the apps you have mentioned. It is almost beyond belief, that so much could be covered comprehensively and clearly in five minutes and two seconds. I shall say no more, but will definitely be sharing this video with others.
▼ Hi there @St Peters Cooks River - great to see another Aussie following Michael :-)
@@TeenaHughesOnline we’ve been doing what we do on RUclips for three years, and have now discovered your channel. Will certainly be casting an eye over it, given your topics. Are you based in Oz?
@@stpeterscooksriver1873 - yes, I'm about 45 mins north of Brisbane :-) Happy to chat at any time, it's always great to meet other "local" RUclips Creators!
Thanks for putting out your content..I’m a long time subscriber you are one of the content creators that has brought my editing to a higher level. You actually got me to using Keynotes on my videos. Thanks again for sharing the knowledge.
My pleasure!
I love your content you make difficult things like video creation seem approachable and fun.
I appreciate that!
What??? I didn't know those free tools could do so much. This is so uncommon to hear on RUclips. This channel is a very interesting discovery.
Hopefully you have video playlists teaching from scratch how to make videos for RUclips using those 3 apps.
Hello Michael,
I am from Germany and i am a beginner/rookie with movie maker. Accidentally i've found your channel. In my opinion it's perfect (for me). You explain all what I always want to know.
You've my apologies if my written text is not perfect (grammaticaly and sentence construction); for me it's the first time I wrote sth. in english and I not used AI .... real.
For me you have a subscription and a like.
Thank you for your work. Best regards,
Gerhard
Thank you for the kind words, Gerhard!
mind blown...THANK YOU for this video!!
Great video, thank you. Been using Mac for years and I never knew what keynot was for. I thought QT was just a player. Issa whole new world.
You're welcome!
Thank you so much for the video! It was very insightful
that's exactly how I do my videos! didn't know though, that you can actually import single objctes and anmations from keynote! i usually just capture the whole slide, but that is so much more better!
Very insightful. I hadn't heard of keynote before but will start using it.
Thank you. Exactly what I need.
Well I just subscribed because if you can show how you did all of this in each one of the apps you mentioned I am set. Coming from Linux so Mac is a new animal for me and I want to start out seeing what I can do with little investment. Thanks for the info I hope to learn the rest in the coming weeks.
Brilliant work Michael - clear, concise, illustrative and informative. Thank you! 👍⭐
thank you!!! exactly what i needed. Can't believe i had all this in hands and didn't even knew about!
What a great overview. You have the perfect narration style. Subscribed!
I have come to trust you Michael and I am thankful for your graciousness to share your knowledge.
My mouth literally fell open when I saw what these three apps can do. THANK YOU for sharing!!
Right?
Wonderful! Incredible tips!
A great video! I've learned a lot from this channel, thanks Michael
DOPE! I’m starting a podcast with my fiancé and this was very helpful. Subscribed!
Excellent. I'm retired, but want to use your wonderful tutorials to do KISS videos for my musical pursuits. I like how Mac builds in so much free software that can do the vast majority of my audio and video projects I hope to get around to. The only software I bought so far is PG Music's "Band in a Box" (up to Version 2022), because it's great to creating a quick backing band for a lot of the songs I do, which I can refine further in the built in Garage Band. I really have not done so much yet, but all the tools are here. Thanks for covering my video side of life in the Mac, ha.
I use KISS in the "Keep It Simple Silly" (or Stupid) acronym, ha.
👍🏽
your tutorial best of the best! I 100% totally agree
Thanks for the video Mr Kinney. My daughter is super keen on making youTube videos and wants me to help her set up the basics on her Mac. This was a great starter video for sure... but can you tell me what might be the best software to use for recording video from the built-in camera on the Mac so she can record herself overlayed on the recording she's making of a session of Roblox :-/
Thanks Michael….appreciate your work mate 👍
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks 🙏
Thanks man for reminding us that substance takes precedence over gimmicks.
Amazing. Thanks for everything man! 🎉
i use all three of these....mainly cos my computer is old and slow, but it gets the job done just about
Are you still rocking FireWire?
@@MacVideoMagic its not quite that old but nearly! i've had this computer since 2014 and hope to get a new one soon
Thanks for this information. I enjoyed your video.
Wow!! I really love it. Thanks for the tutorials
Excellent way of teaching!
Thank you for all your videos... knowledge sharing!!
Amazing. Thank you.
Love this, thank you so much!
Really good tutorial. And you are very down-to-earth too.
This was really helpful thank you!!
thank you very much
Nice video, these apps can do so much!
Very well explained!
excellent and beyond thank you
I've been making videos for my channel under another name for years with iMovie, Keynote, some Quicktime, and Audacity. Maybe someday I'll get Final Cut Pro.
Great video, thanks very much. I’ve just subscribed to your channel. Which video should I start with for a complete beginner wanting to make a RUclips video on my MacBook?
Thanks
From Sydney, Australia
Thank you starting a Podcast with my Bestie
Thanks!
The problem with Quicktime Player is that Your Video recordings are going to be 500 GBs .. file size way too large that take ages to Shrink down
When you mentioned making standard videos vertical for social media it sparked something I have been trying to figure out. Is there a way to take a standard video, crop for vertical, but then do Ken Burns style panning to keep the subject in the frame. Like if I am standing in front of the camera and take a step or two to the side, I am still in a standard frame, but half or more of me would be gone when cropped to vertical.
Look at his video list. He has made a nice video explaining how to do exactly what you are asking about.
Do you have any suggestions on capcut like tools....has apple come out with auto generated captions yet?
Thanks for a wonderful information - is there any difference between cameras of Pro Vs. Air?
god bless you!!!!!
Give blindly, receive seeingly. Thank you so much for your effort.
Thank you for your kindness! 🙏🏽
I think that you have just saved me £hundreds Michael! I have been thinking about an Adobe subscription for a while but glad I sub to your channel as you are right - the videos I make only need iMove etc.
▼ Hey @Phil Clarke - don't pay for a subscription to Adobe - you can do everything you need without it 🙂
@@TeenaHughesOnline Yes - and it was good seeing this video to remind me that I can do everything on my Mac without purchasing additional software or signing up for costly subscriptions.
New subscriber👍😊
Why did I just unconsciously assume that these native Apple apps didn’t do what content creators need? No idea…boy did I waste lots of time & money…thank you for liberating me from mindlessness in this area…
You're welcome!
How about for reacting to tv shows or making trailers? Im struggling to figure out how to get clips. You cant screen record Netflix
Thanks, but how can you use overlays on the Mac screen desktop, and how can you change QuickTime to record in mp4 instead of mov, those large files are killers, also, iMovie crashes and it is very slow, compare to the free davinci resolve.
SMART
You saved me from uploading low quality content forever.
Which app amongst the three can make captions for videos?
Why can I not make new iMovies on my Mac Mini? I can import but cannot create new movies. I can do it on my iPad and Mac Book. And why is Quick Time always in stereo, even when I set my interface to mono?
*Like # 549, Subscribed 74.9K Range* Good video. Informational. Just learned something new Keynote and will look to use it. Thank you!
I have a 2012 Mac mini and can't find iMovie! When I try to download it on the App store I'm prompted that I need a newer version of my OS which I'm unable to get. I am currently running Catalina 10.15.7. What options do you recommend instead? I know there are a lot of third party apps.
Please advise. Thanks
WEREN'T YOU THE GYM TEACHER IN DEGRASSI???!?!?!?!?!?!
🤔
💯
Capcut?
there's no audio tho
▼▼▼ Hey there @Michael Kinney, love your videos! Would you be so kind as to please clarify how you created the Video cartoon effect at ▼ 01:13 ▼? I need this so much 💜 :-) Thank you!
Real simple. In iMovie, go up to the toolbar above the Preview window (where you see your video playback), go over to the ninth icon (looks like three overlapping circles), select it. Two buttons with appear below: "Clip Filter" and "Audio Effect". Click on the long rectangular button beside "Clip Filter". The "Choose Clip Filter" window will pop, and away you go!
▼ OMG @@MacVideoMagic you're a star!! Thanks ever so much! Can't wait to check this out asap! I used to be able to do this with an iPhone App but that doesn't work any more.
▼ Excellent @@MacVideoMagic! I'll have a go at that today :-)
Amazing information! Thank you immensely sir!
Is there a way I can get in touch with you to discuss/get customized advice for my Live Recording Setup(?)
I do apologize, I am so inundated with all I must do in order to bring a (hopefully) phenomenal idea into fruition...
I understand your time is valuable and will gladly compensate you for what is required. I just need help.... 🌷🌻🦋
