  • In Dosso, Niger 13-year-old Mariama has just discovered that she will be married in a few days time. Mariama's mother was worried that her daughter would have a child out of wedlock and then no one would marry her so she accepted 100,00 CFA (200 USD) as a dowry from a local market trader in his mid-20s.
Watch - 18+ End Child Marriage, here: • 18+ End Child Marriage
Plan International is working with girls, their parents and communities to educate them about the consequences of child marriage, particularly the dangers to a girls' health if she gives birth before her body is ready. Plan International believes that sending girls to school is essential for reducing child marriage and funds 200 schools in Niger , focusing on educating girls and ending early and forced marriage.

"It happens" but that does't make it right does it? I had a choice and didn't get married until I wanted to at age 26. then when I had my babies they didn't die or I didn't die. 13year old bodies are not mature to handle a birth. its a medieval practice and I hope it ends. It robs little girls of their childhood and a chance to better themselves in the world through school. YES you are a little girl until the age of 20.

Exactly. People use the terms interchangeably when they have very different meanings. My uncle had an arranged marriage because he was super nerdy, couldn't talk to girls and would have probably lived his life alone. He is now happily married with 3 kids. He met quite a few women, some he rejected, others rejected him. He got to know his wife-to-be during a year-long engagement and got to know her well before marriage. It's sort of like a blind date arranged by your elder family members. So many marriages are arranged and have lasted decades with happy outcomes. Also, some cultures disprove of dating, especially 10-15 years ago, which meant it was pretty damn difficult to find a partner!

Forced is a strong word for my situation but I was made to marry the 23 year old that got me pregnant at 14. Or be on the streets with an infant. I felt like I didn't have another option. Now that I'm older, I know there were other options. I'm lucky though, I got out of that marriage young, went to college and at 36 now, I've been with the same man about 18 years. To say that I am Nigerien and be proud of some practices of my tradition, my country or even of my culture, never, never I 'm not at all. In all societies, all cultures, all civilizations , There are mistakes and regrets, however, the one of my people, my country seems most absurd.
this video It's enough to rebel against my tradition, and be committed forever to this noble cause of women's rights, girls and children rights . Maybe I do not know to whom or what I’m face of by making this battle of mine, but with the help of God, my commitment and my dream, nothing shall prevent me in the world I still defend and will defend the rights of women, girls and children wherever I will be in the world and particularly in my country Niger .
To some I may be an enemy , a crazy man , for others I’m just an activist, an advocate for women rights or a hero , but to tell you the truth, the real heros are those women and girls who are fighting every day to escape from this barbaric practice , and overtaken injustice in their society.
In Niger everyone suffers, but women suffer doubly even more . If your sister , your daughter, your wife or your mother is not suffering , know that those of your neighbor or near you, in your country Niger are suffering every day .
I feel guilty and responsible somehow in my conscience and my inability to protect these victimes, therefore my apologies to all women victims and to the Nigerienne in particular. ***Birdson1793 ***

I'm a woman, and I think that it's mostly women's fault. I come from a fairly patriarcal country, and I can say that men were more kind than women. Men didn't mind if I rebelled, they let me be, but my mother, sister, aunts and female cousins were always ready to criticize, moralize and condemn me. I was lucky to have a father who liked strong women, and he pushed me to be free and indipendent. When my mom tried to refain me, my father would interfere and say "let her be"

forcing your daughter to marry a strange, old man is not an option. If you want to punish the girl and make her understand school is important, send her to bed without food, tell her the reality.. Don't make a man "take her off your hands" by letting him rape her, making her depressed, just so that "she can live" that is not a life. If this is the case, her life is already over. Marriage isn't everything.

    • @joebloggs619

It still goes on even in modern Europe, though not as young as before your early teens. The general principle traditional Latin societies apply is that as soon as a girl has her first period and shows breasts growing, she is ready to arrange a marriage for her with some acceptable local lad all agree will be good for her. As soon as boys start fooling around doing risky things boys do and showing signs of early manhood eg beard hair, they must be married off, to give them male responsibility, so they don't self destruct doing stupid dangerous things young men often do, in any society. The young prospective marriage partners are sussed out by adults who want them married into their family, to see if they could be OK together ie not fight too much. The families do a lot of secret, behind the scenes work and socialising, discussing etc, to ensure the young couple have every chance of marital success. They are not immediately thrown into marriage but gradually accustomed to it, even though the wedding may have happened at age 14 or so, to ensure the bride is a virgin when she married and the groom did not start messing bad women, though he will have received a bit of sexual instruction, as will the bride, from older women. Often, in Greek traditional societies, although they marry young, the couple do not have sex for years, eg at age 18, when married at, say 13. That is to ensure they will stay together when babies arrive and to give the couple's families time to prepare the young couple to cope with the stresses of parenthood and adjusting to the married state and its potential frictions. The young couple often lives in parents' home, like their grown children, but sharing a room. So parents can watch and guide, advise them etc. The system sounds outrageous but it actually works, as these young arranged marriages typically last forever. I met such a couple who have been married about 60 years, with no other partners. There was no premarital dating, all arranged, no romance, just a deal between families. But they grow to like/love each other. This pair swore they each had been blessed with the most wonderful spouse possible, even though they seemed like a most unlikely couple, she being unconventional, outrageous even and he being very quiet, reserved, proper, fastidious, neat etc.

I'm against all this child marriage thing, but it sadly happens in some places in this world to survive.

To me the saddest thing about these "marriages" is the girl has no say in who she marries. She is like a car on a parking lot. A man sees her or knows of her and chooses her to be his wife. She has no choice in who enters her body. The man can be of low moral standing or have mental problems no matter. As long as he has money she becomes his slave that can never leave him or else her family will have to pay back the money. If the society would keep a closer eye on the men and stop allowing rape and promiscuity the girls would not need to marry to not have a child out of wedlock.

These are young children who have much better things to do in life apart from being forced into marriage. I'm hoping and praying that Mariama will get to finish school so she can help more children like her to get a brighter life.

😭😭😭 I'm also 13, I'm born and raised in Brooklyn, thank G-D, I don't have to go through that! These poor women and children need to rise up! This is a clear violation of many human rights. And if they can't step up then the UN should do something. If not then maybe one day if my parents ever allow me, I want to start a campaign for they're rights.
This really hit home, Mariama is my age, she deserves the right to a childhood and a healthy teenhood. Peace ✌
