So the moment the young girl gets her period, she's dethroned and replaced as if one is damaged goods. Talk about having your first period truly being a blessing to release you from this ritualistic practice.
From what was said by Sumika, the woman who is an ex-kumari, it sounds like this actually is not developmentally destructive at all, despite the many biased Westerners in the comments. Sumika seems to look back very fondly upon her time as Kumari, she's studying for her master's in communication, has a successful career, she has a lot of hope for the future and has no obvious sign of any emotional problems. Based on the unusual access to education the woman who is an ex-Kumari has in a country where the average income is about $4,000 per year and the vast majority do not enter the higher education system, I wouldn't be surprised if she or her family also were paid a lot for her work as Kumari and their work helping her fulfill that role, similar to child actors in the West, except with a role which is much more respected and seems to require less energy and time (since the acting looks relatively easy and there are no lines to memorize), meaning it doesn't hold back education in the way being a child actor often does. The part about menstruation having such a central role in defining the role of Kumari does seem like it will probably be interpreted by the community and by Kumari herself as meaning that menstruation is "impure." If that is the interpretation, that particular part of this is sexist and harmful. There is likely a way to keep the entire tradition completely unchanged by just framing menstruation as signifying a new stage of life in which the girl becomes more fully capable of reason, like a Bat Mitzvah in Judaism or Confirmation in Catholicism. Maybe Kumari's role has to do with being a child with fewer preconceptions and a different and more intuitive consciousness and way of looking at things which is not fully comprehensible to an adolescent or an adult. Honoring and respecting the unique wisdom and insight of young children is a good thing. I am not sure the West is in any position to act superior to this, considering Western media and culture focus on sexualizing girls almost as soon as they can walk, and Disney children's movies like Cinderella also seem to frame young girls whole future in terms of their attractiveness to rich and powerful men. All of that is at least as developmentally destructive as the apparent traditional attitude about menstruation propagated by the Kumari tradition, and the West spreads those destructive attitudes around the world. I've personally seen the lives of many girls I grew up with greatly harmed by internalizing the goal of getting "rescued" by some rich and powerful, perfect Prince Charming who is going to solve all of a young woman's problems if she just sacrifices or delays her own life and her own goals enough to prove she is the right match for him. Even the current Kumari in this video is influenced by Disney Cinderella. Is this the attitude that Westerners think should influence young girls instead of the Kumari tradition?
Your point is spot on. I don't know how I personally feel about the tradition. But the west judges them bc we don't believe in their gods. But if Kumari is real and looking down on them and has the power to affect their lives then they are justified in worshipping her.
Bruhhhhh just because they get their period doesn't mean they actually mentally mature you know that right? Also also also stop comparing religious shit to literal fantasy movies. Also I don't think the kid really has a say in it now do they? Keep your culture going sure sure. Also if you really think about it then Kumari culture is also kinda whack you really think your goddess entered the body of a child ? And then you worship it? Like what? Your kumari is like a prince charming too just not to be touched only worshipped. Also in no Disney movie did the main lady change herself to suit their prince. Also continue watching Cinderella and all of its sequels before dissing on it. I'm from the east btw. The culture still sucks. West and East both are shit.

This actually happened. There's a Kumari who was choose at the age of 2. And she never got her period so she is still Kumari n hasn't retired. She's now 70 years old and yes it's her wish to stay as Kumari. She refused to live normal life.

Where I live , girls during their period can't even enter the kitchen and touch the utensils because it becomes impure if they touch it . . They aren't even allowed to eat at the same table as the male elders in the family
My first quest in search of the Kumari was filled with my hope and desire to simply find a legendary person that had alluded me for years. My second hope was to meet and photograph the Kumari. I accomplished this yet at the same time failed when I realized that I was in front of a small child that could become a “tourist attraction” much like the unfortunate fate of the Bhaktapur Kumari several years ago. However in turn I received something else that was perhaps far more valuable which stood by all of us. When confronted with meeting the world’s only living goddess I saw something that touched my heart. I saw a little girl called Samita shouldering the weight of a cultures legacy, history and responsibility...
I am from Nepal and I would like to point out a few facts after reading the comments. 1) Kumaris can walk, they are allowed to walk within their homes and the temple she resides in as her home, since it's considered holy grounds and everything sharp is removed from the floor. So the title of the video is a bit misguiding. 2) It's not just Period that gets a Kumari out as from being a Kumari. If she gets an injury and bleeds from any parts, even fingers or legs, then she can no longer be the Kumari. 3) After she gets her period, she will continue as a normal girl but the government usually supports her with financial help as compensation as well as the people.
Zena Joshi Is it true that they have a whole thing with the girls to become a Kumari and the last trail is that they have to go in a basement of dead animals
The Himalayan kingdom of Nepal is not only the land of many mountain peaks but also many Gods and Goddess, unique among all of them being the living, breathing goddess - Kumari Devi, a deified young girl. To be precise, ‘Kumari,’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Kaumarya’ or ‘virgin,’ and ‘Devi’ means ‘goddess.’ The custom of worshiping a pre-pubescent girl, who is not a born goddess, as the source of ‘Shakti’ or supreme power is an old Hindu-Buddhist tradition that still continues to this day in Nepal. This practice is based on the belief as described in the Hindu scripture of Devi Mahatmya that the supreme Mother Goddess Durga, who is thought to have manifested the entire creation out of her womb, lives in the inner recesses of every woman in this entire cosmos.
There’s a Kumari who never got her period, but she had to get dismissed because she wasnt a child anymore she was about 16. I think shes about 50-60 something now.
Man the music made this sound so unsettling. I’ve visited Nepal a few times n I speak Nepali n honestly, to the ppl of Nepal the Kumari is equal to a deity and from the way the father spoke in this video it seemed that his daughter becoming the current Kumari was an honor for his family. It might sound strange from a western pov, which I wouldn’t blame ppl for finding it different or odd but it’s their culture n I hope ppl would respect that. After all the world is huge n there r many things we don’t know, many different things that to some is a common everyday thing & to some it might very strange. That’s just how things r 🤷♀️
This video is genius. It doesn't directly tell the viewer whether the tradition seems right or wrong, but the framing forces us to draw our own conclusions.
Well obviously this "tradition" is fucked up. This girl should be running outside with other kids but she's not even allowed to walk or talk... Poor child.
I'm getting really suspicious with them being in a dark room performing some rites and a prayer, sounds so not right to me. Well, this is just me and my opinions.
You can watch movie too. It's just they are checking her bravery & some other physical requirements needed to be Kumari. My friend's sister has become Kumari too. Nothing bad as such ever occur till now
You may have your doubts and opinions, it's your right. But it's a belief, a tradition. Every belief and tradition have things that is hard to understand for people outside of it. Something in your tradition or belief might be suspicious or ridiculous for them too. So why not just learn it as it is and not speculate something you don't understand, especially making this kind of public statement. People who have pride and live in peace by that belief might read your words of suspicion very offensive.

I agree with you on that one. I feel like it would have been better if they chose adult women to be treated like this because how are children supposed to comprehend that they spend their whole childhood ruling and and when their childhood ends they are left only to their family.
I can see why you think that way, but also, I think for the family themself and for the girl, being chosen to act as the goddess Kumari is a great honor, especially because it’s such a great part of their culture

This quote confused me. As someone who knows nothing about this religion or tradition, do they not get a choice? Because later the father said at 7:01 that he made her Kumari which would be contradictory, no?
As a Nepalese girl myself, I’m glad I didn’t have to go through this stuff. I cant imagine not being able to do basic things like run and play, make friends etc. The only thing she probably likes about this is that she’s considered a god.
It's almost like she was forced to strip naked in front of a bunch of old guys while they touched everywhere on her body to make sure she never bled then had her vagina opened to make sure she has a hymen. 👌 Traditions are stupid and their life is a lie.

Yearsago I saw a documenmtary about Kumari. One girl couldn't adjust when she hit puberty and still styled herself the goddess, with some folks still coming to honor her.
+akuppa it's not the number 32 that's the disturbing part. it's the fact that it's a group of men alone with a little girl. Her family doesn't know what happens to her in this room. It's disturbing because she could possibly be getting harmed.
Alexis Mason Because men alone with little girls always want to harm them... (sarcasm). Of course anything could happen. But searching for 32 marks (usually on a male body) is a well known practice in Indian religion. There's no more reason to be suspicious of it than allowing a priest to be alone with a little boy. Things do happen, I'm not denying that. But it is paranoia to be so suspicious, only because you are unfamiliar with the practice.
They said that a priest takes her into a dark room to find physical perfections.....I swear if that priest is doing anything to that girl’s body.... *I’m gonna throw hands!*
We have a similar one here in the Philippines in Panay Island. In that tribe, there's this called the "Binukot" literally means Confined or Secluded. They never leave the house, nor can their feet touch the ground. And when they do,they are placed in a carriage that is lifted up by men. Most of times called princess's as they have fair skin and beautiful. The title is passed down from generation to generation. Stories of the tribe are told by the binukot through an Epic, but in a form of song.

And also how do they enforce that. It’d take a lot to instill those kind of rules on a young child that’s used to playing. Makes you wonder what the punishment for that type of behavior is....... not going to give any ideas

Basically when they finally let their feet touch the ground, their reaction is gonna be like that scene from the movie Rapunzel when rapunzel finally gets to touch grass
Kumari actually CAN touch the ground...but not during festivals, traditions, (basically she can't touch the floor in public) they'll be able to walk around in private. Only the priest's WIFE can be around her when she's on her feet.
It would kinda be different since rapunzel was raised in the tower and had no chance to touch the grass. Whereas the kumari walk on the ground before they're chosen and have other opportunities to do so. I see what you mean tho, and to some kumari it might be like that scene.

Also the ability to not show emotion or fear, or make any sort of noise when surprised or emotionally stricken by anything. They also believe the divine can only be housed in a body that has never been 'imperfect' in any way, so never had a wound, never been ill etc. Why she must also be 'beautiful' according to a certain set of characteristics is beyond me as well. Also her horoscope must be a good match to that of the sitting monarch or leader of government, since she needs to legitimize and bless their reign every year of her divinity. I kinda agree with that. I mean its hard to believe these people are so one sided, i mean dont they have their own opinion?? Anyone in their right mind would see that something aint right here, i mean so what if its a tradition , its wrong in so many ways. Its a shame though the people from nepal think they have their own god, and every country has their own god. How rediculas!! We were all created by the same one God!!! No matter what traditions you have or whatever, too bad people cant realize that and instead of keeping people apart and different, we should be coming together and atleast accepting the fact we were created by the same one God. God made us different because he didnt want a bunch of clones, but we all bleed red so we are not so different that we have different Gods!!
I dont get who we are to judge anyone. Each culture has its norms and its traditions. Stripping those away is a form of homogenization that has not made western societies happy in the least. Who are we to say that is the way? What touched me most was the preciousness of the relationship between these sisters. They seem like they will lifelong be closer than most. To help eachother through what must be difficult. That beautiful sisterhood will at least be a blessing to them in the future.
they believed it's a curse because it means they will go to heaven and the end of their life of coming soon, that's their culture not really abuse its their beliefs
I have seen a variation of this practice, where a young girl becomes a Kumari temporarily for the duration of the puja. Being a part of that ritual was by far one of the most powerful moments of my life. Watching an otherwise normal 9 year old American girl, participate in a Yogic ceremony for several hours , and never get restless, or giggly despite all sorts of ritual weirdness going on for hours around her, was in itself miraculous.Instead of the little kid meltdowns and gigglefests you would expect, she just became more and more regal as the ceremony went on
Its multiple people and virginity is part of what makes her sacred although we would be foolish to say its 100% impossible for her to be abused or taken advantage of even slightly. They even have to check her part to make sure its an inny not an outie.

I was just wondering if they put that on their resume 😂
Who about to read all of that ?😂

If those haters could read they'd be very upset.🤨

Zena Joshi So of she got a nose bleed then she's not a Kumari?

The Himalayan kingdom of Nepal is not only the land of many mountain peaks but also many Gods and Goddess, unique among all of them being the living, breathing goddess - Kumari Devi, a deified young girl. To be precise, ‘Kumari,’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Kaumarya’ or ‘virgin,’ and ‘Devi’ means ‘goddess.’
The custom of worshiping a pre-pubescent girl, who is not a born goddess, as the source of ‘Shakti’ or supreme power is an old Hindu-Buddhist tradition that still continues to this day in Nepal. This practice is based on the belief as described in the Hindu scripture of Devi Mahatmya that the supreme Mother Goddess Durga, who is thought to have manifested the entire creation out of her womb, lives in the inner recesses of every woman in this entire cosmos.

Yearsago I saw a documenmtary about Kumari. One girl couldn't adjust when she hit puberty and still styled herself the goddess, with some folks still coming to honor her.
The fact that they take a child into a room and a bunch of men look for the "32 physical perfections" deeply disturbs me.
I was thinking that too. like, what are they doing to them, and the fact that they take them in a dark room away from the public eye to do this.
32 marks is a well known sign of divinity in Buddhism and Hinduism. Nothing strange about it.
I would be suspicious of a priest alone with a little boy too. I don't think they were suspicious just because it's an unfamiliar practice.

People don't even respect the organisms inside of themselves let alone other cultures.

So what if it’s culture? In some African countries, it’s culture to cut a woman’s clitoris. In ancient Egypt, it was tradition to get circumcised without anaesthetics. Just because it’s a culture doesn’t mean it’s good.
this must be low key traumatising, not moving or interacting with anyone but your family for the first decade or so of your life
Ikr! this must be so bad for the girl's mental health. They have to spend most of their childhood not talking to anyone outside their family and cannot have friends their age to play with, and not be able to just spend hours running around like a normal kid.
And even if they do enjoy being a kumari godess, when they get their period and that respect and status is suddenly stripped away from them and they have to adapt to a whole new life overnight, which is surely traumatizing for a lot of the girls

If they’re meant to find the goddess, why is it based on physical perfections rather than something connected spiritually
As far as I know it's not just physical as in of the body, it's also things like the way they get lost in thought when in nature, completely in awe and inspired by small things like the sound of water or cracks in a rock.
She also needs to pick the former Kumari's possessions from a random assortment of things.
Mind you this could all be completely wrong as I've not read nearly enough about it all to truly understand it.
it does include spiritual perfections! a kid is supposed to be pure and untainted - hence a worthy candidate. then, their bravery is tested.
because people are shallow and so are their religions 🤷♂️
because religions have been and are always one sided

I kinda agree with that. I mean its hard to believe these people are so one sided, i mean dont they have their own opinion?? Anyone in their right mind would see that something aint right here, i mean so what if its a tradition , its wrong in so many ways. Its a shame though the people from nepal think they have their own god, and every country has their own god. How rediculas!! We were all created by the same one God!!! No matter what traditions you have or whatever, too bad people cant realize that and instead of keeping people apart and different, we should be coming together and atleast accepting the fact we were created by the same one God.

I have seen a variation of this practice, where a young girl becomes a Kumari temporarily for the duration of the puja. Being a part of that ritual was by far one of the most powerful moments of my life.
Watching an otherwise normal 9 year old American girl, participate in a Yogic ceremony for several hours , and never get restless, or giggly despite all sorts of ritual weirdness going on for hours around her, was in itself miraculous.Instead of the little kid meltdowns and gigglefests you would expect, she just became more and more regal as the ceremony went on
A priest takes a bunch of kids into a secret dark room where what happens is unknown...
Does this make anybody else feel a bit awkward?
Its multiple people and virginity is part of what makes her sacred although we would be foolish to say its 100% impossible for her to be abused or taken advantage of even slightly. They even have to check her part to make sure its an inny not an outie.

Its not that, i am against the tradition but still i feel her childhood is being sacrificed by this customs. Let her play in the open fields. Let her feel the earthly ground. Let her enjoy the real essence of childhood. Gods and godesses are present in all kids. They are born pure. There is no need of worshiping a particular girl on the name of goddess. Her godliness is present in her spirit to conquer the world with her charms. So why should one stop her childhood in a room, keeping her like captive and no freedom
