The fact that they take a child into a room and a bunch of men look for the "32 physical perfections" deeply disturbs me.
I was thinking that too. like, what are they doing to them, and the fact that they take them in a dark room away from the public eye to do this.
32 marks is a well known sign of divinity in Buddhism and Hinduism. Nothing strange about it.
+akuppa it's not the number 32 that's the disturbing part. it's the fact that it's a group of men alone with a little girl. Her family doesn't know what happens to her in this room. It's disturbing because she could possibly be getting harmed.
Alexis Mason Because men alone with little girls always want to harm them... (sarcasm). Of course anything could happen. But searching for 32 marks (usually on a male body) is a well known practice in Indian religion. There's no more reason to be suspicious of it than allowing a priest to be alone with a little boy. Things do happen, I'm not denying that. But it is paranoia to be so suspicious, only because you are unfamiliar with the practice.
I would be suspicious of a priest alone with a little boy too. I don't think they were suspicious just because it's an unfamiliar practice.
“How was your childhood?”
*I was treated like a goddess*
😂😂
Lol
😅
“But it wasn't exactly the way I imagined it to be like”
Literally
So the moment the young girl gets her period, she's dethroned and replaced as if one is damaged goods. Talk about having your first period truly being a blessing to release you from this ritualistic practice.

Is no one concerned about how not walking is going to affect her muscle development in her legs? What happens then?
Is no one going to notice the former Kumari walking normally and the fact that nothing as such has happened in centuries? Also the fact that the Nepalese never actually said that in the video?
Is no one concerned that a video with deliberate poor lightning, incomplete information and creepy music on street festivals and shots of temples, is not a reliable source?

From what was said by Sumika, the woman who is an ex-kumari, it sounds like this actually is not developmentally destructive at all, despite the many biased Westerners in the comments. Sumika seems to look back very fondly upon her time as Kumari, she's studying for her master's in communication, has a successful career, she has a lot of hope for the future and has no obvious sign of any emotional problems. Based on the unusual access to education the woman who is an ex-Kumari has in a country where the average income is about $4,000 per year and the vast majority do not enter the higher education system, I wouldn't be surprised if she or her family also were paid a lot for her work as Kumari and their work helping her fulfill that role, similar to child actors in the West, except with a role which is much more respected and seems to require less energy and time (since the acting looks relatively easy and there are no lines to memorize), meaning it doesn't hold back education in the way being a child actor often does.
The part about menstruation having such a central role in defining the role of Kumari does seem like it will probably be interpreted by the community and by Kumari herself as meaning that menstruation is "impure." If that is the interpretation, that particular part of this is sexist and harmful. There is likely a way to keep the entire tradition completely unchanged by just framing menstruation as signifying a new stage of life in which the girl becomes more fully capable of reason, like a Bat Mitzvah in Judaism or Confirmation in Catholicism. Maybe Kumari's role has to do with being a child with fewer preconceptions and a different and more intuitive consciousness and way of looking at things which is not fully comprehensible to an adolescent or an adult. Honoring and respecting the unique wisdom and insight of young children is a good thing.
I am not sure the West is in any position to act superior to this, considering Western media and culture focus on sexualizing girls almost as soon as they can walk, and Disney children's movies like Cinderella also seem to frame young girls whole future in terms of their attractiveness to rich and powerful men. All of that is at least as developmentally destructive as the apparent traditional attitude about menstruation propagated by the Kumari tradition, and the West spreads those destructive attitudes around the world. I've personally seen the lives of many girls I grew up with greatly harmed by internalizing the goal of getting "rescued" by some rich and powerful, perfect Prince Charming who is going to solve all of a young woman's problems if she just sacrifices or delays her own life and her own goals enough to prove she is the right match for him. Even the current Kumari in this video is influenced by Disney Cinderella. Is this the attitude that Westerners think should influence young girls instead of the Kumari tradition?
Your point is spot on. I don't know how I personally feel about the tradition. But the west judges them bc we don't believe in their gods. But if Kumari is real and looking down on them and has the power to affect their lives then they are justified in worshipping her.
Who about to read all of that ?😂
Westerner conquer the global from fashion, lifestyle, work, and other.
If those haters could read they'd be very upset.🤨
Bruhhhhh just because they get their period doesn't mean they actually mentally mature you know that right? Also also also stop comparing religious shit to literal fantasy movies. Also I don't think the kid really has a say in it now do they? Keep your culture going sure sure. Also if you really think about it then Kumari culture is also kinda whack you really think your goddess entered the body of a child ? And then you worship it? Like what? Your kumari is like a prince charming too just not to be touched only worshipped. Also in no Disney movie did the main lady change herself to suit their prince. Also continue watching Cinderella and all of its sequels before dissing on it. I'm from the east btw. The culture still sucks. West and East both are shit.

That’s probably one of the inherited traits they look for. The previous older one seems to have the same temperament.
The main problem I have with the thought that this goes on today, is that their is a possibility of manipulation and possibly r1p3 from a Priest to the Kumari, saying it is a "ritual" that she cannot say to anyone. When I was a child I was almost manipulated into that kind of state from a pastor that got arrested. I do not mean to insult this in anyway possible, but that thought leaves me worried.

My first quest in search of the Kumari was filled with my hope and desire to simply find a legendary person that had alluded me for years. My second hope was to meet and photograph the Kumari. I accomplished this yet at the same time failed when I realized that I was in front of a small child that could become a “tourist attraction” much like the unfortunate fate of the Bhaktapur Kumari several years ago. However in turn I received something else that was perhaps far more valuable which stood by all of us.
When confronted with meeting the world’s only living goddess I saw something that touched my heart. I saw a little girl called Samita shouldering the weight of a cultures legacy, history and responsibility...
Man the music made this sound so unsettling. I’ve visited Nepal a few times n I speak Nepali n honestly, to the ppl of Nepal the Kumari is equal to a deity and from the way the father spoke in this video it seemed that his daughter becoming the current Kumari was an honor for his family. It might sound strange from a western pov, which I wouldn’t blame ppl for finding it different or odd but it’s their culture n I hope ppl would respect that. After all the world is huge n there r many things we don’t know, many different things that to some is a common everyday thing & to some it might very strange. That’s just how things r 🤷♀️

Stop aside ajoke, this is terrifying
The Himalayan kingdom of Nepal is not only the land of many mountain peaks but also many Gods and Goddess, unique among all of them being the living, breathing goddess - Kumari Devi, a deified young girl. To be precise, ‘Kumari,’ comes from the Sanskrit word ‘Kaumarya’ or ‘virgin,’ and ‘Devi’ means ‘goddess.’
The custom of worshiping a pre-pubescent girl, who is not a born goddess, as the source of ‘Shakti’ or supreme power is an old Hindu-Buddhist tradition that still continues to this day in Nepal. This practice is based on the belief as described in the Hindu scripture of Devi Mahatmya that the supreme Mother Goddess Durga, who is thought to have manifested the entire creation out of her womb, lives in the inner recesses of every woman in this entire cosmos.
No one can escape teachers and homework, not even a Goddess.

Most of times called princess's as they have fair skin and beautiful. The title is passed down from generation to generation. "She is happy" (Looks pissed the entire time)
me
they say if she smiles at someone that person will die
Elizabeth well, it's true. We all die eventually!
Mallory Schroeder it's their beliefs
OP is just making a joke that she herself might be happy but naturally looks pissed off all the time! resting bitch face. nothing to do with the actual girl in the video, it was just a funny comparison.
Janelle D. I'm not to sure but i think that if she smiles to someone she curses them
She’s probably confused and concerned lol💀
5:30 No she isn't

imagine she needs to learn how to walk when shes 12

“Finally! I can be a normal girl!”

Dude she knows how to walk, she was only made Kumari when she was 12.

I'm going to address the elephant in the room... They don't let her leave, they don't let her speak, they don't let her play, they don't let her go to school; It sounds like child abuse to me.
And also how do they enforce that. It’d take a lot to instill those kind of rules on a young child that’s used to playing. Makes you wonder what the punishment for that type of behavior is....... not going to give any ideas
My wig went into oblivion now I can’t find it Religion is like pretty fucking stupid and ridiculous
What a foolish understanding of what real living is.Just because she is your child you can do anything to her even if it makes her like a fool like you.You are sick
Please be respectful on what they believe. It may not be right, but you can’t do anything about it; so spare the rudeness.
No they do let them talk but not to stranger
The part that creeps me out is that the priests put them in a dark room and do secret prayers and rituals and whatever else they want. It feels like a pedophile ring. Then they get too old and on to a new victim. The video breezes right by that.
Do Christians grape 🍇 pope?
Do Christians grape 🍇 Jesus?
That's in your culture..Christian priests do that to child
very suspicious
This little girl is probably thinking, this sucks, I want to go to America to eat hotdogs.
No
And why would you need to fly halfway across the world for just hotdogs? Someone could pack and bring her some from the nearest mall.

Can you read her mind or ask her if she likes what they do to/with her??
There’s a Kumari who never got her period, but she had to get dismissed because she wasnt a child anymore she was about 16. I think shes about 50-60 something now.
16 years are still children though...

@Fabienne Gef ikr
@@asteria1346 no theyre not
almost dead account lol Well they certainly aren’t adults
Basically when they finally let their feet touch the ground, their reaction is gonna be like that scene from the movie Rapunzel when rapunzel finally gets to touch grass
Kumari actually CAN touch the ground...but not during festivals, traditions, (basically she can't touch the floor in public) they'll be able to walk around in private. Only the priest's WIFE can be around her when she's on her feet.
Just in case you were curious
@@moneyhoney5776 ah, thanks for the info! :)
It would kinda be different since rapunzel was raised in the tower and had no chance to touch the grass. Whereas the kumari walk on the ground before they're chosen and have other opportunities to do so.
I see what you mean tho, and to some kumari it might be like that scene.
😂😂true
What's the soundtrack/acapella/choir name in the beginning that goes "AaaaaaAAAAaaaaa..."? Please help. It's relaxing.
compassion for anyone but the supposed goddess of compassion herself.
being a Kumari looks like a total boredom.
Puddin Pop
it is. I feel bad for the girl and people worshiping a fake 'god' you can't have more than one good and then dump her at her period to get a new one.
JALO LIONEL well it's not your problem it's tradition.
Angela Torres
A crazy one
And I am sure they think that we're all crazy for believing that a goddess can't manifest herself many times over.

Not in their experience
I’m not sure about this but I think that it’s not abt having their periods but abt bleeding. Something like that the goddess leaves the kumaris body if one bleeds so they get dismissed after period bc it’s a bleeding one can’t really stop compared to wounds n stuff. (Feel free to correct me if I’m wrong though )

This video is genius. It doesn't directly tell the viewer whether the tradition seems right or wrong, but the framing forces us to draw our own conclusions.
i agree
yes I agree too
+Aleena Oh I KNOW RIGHT!!! I was thinking about that as I was typing this...
+Aleena Oh broadly is vice
Well obviously this "tradition" is fucked up. This girl should be running outside with other kids but she's not even allowed to walk or talk... Poor child.
Jeez she looks so happy
So I'm going to assume that.when they say her feet can't touch the ground. I'm assuming they just have rooms full of carpets and rugs that she can walk and run on. Puls I'm sure if they open windows she can still get sunshine.
She cant talk to anyone but family. But that doesn't mean she cant have her family help keep communication going. And people do come to pay tribute and pray so she does in a way interact with people
She cant go out unless it's for religious reasons. But that doesn't mean people cant come to her. This also doesn't stop her from persuing and education or learning and finding hobbies.
"She is happy"
*pans to view her face*
Oh yeah, she looks super happy.
Kumaris are not allowed to smile
Circus Fox
They can’t even smile? Imagine how hard it would be for them if someone said a funny joke
@@cinnamonkitten3609 Lol😂
Cinnamon Kitten Its said that if they smile it is believed that she cursed so¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They are not allowed to smile in public.. Like when people worship her
I am from Nepal and I would like to point out a few facts after reading the comments.
1) Kumaris can walk, they are allowed to walk within their homes and the temple she resides in as her home, since it's considered holy grounds and everything sharp is removed from the floor. So the title of the video is a bit misguiding.
2) It's not just Period that gets a Kumari out as from being a Kumari. If she gets an injury and bleeds from any parts, even fingers or legs, then she can no longer be the Kumari.
3) After she gets her period, she will continue as a normal girl but the government usually supports her with financial help as compensation as well as the people.
Zena Joshi So of she got a nose bleed then she's not a Kumari?
ahhhh i see.. tnx for the clarifications..
Zena Joshi Is it true that they have a whole thing with the girls to become a Kumari and the last trail is that they have to go in a basement of dead animals
Thank you for clarifying all that! It's really interesting
I have a question. Does kumari not allowed to smile?
It is a different way of life for sure, I could never do it, but I have respect for those who do and wouldn’t change it
I have to research this more. Interesting
At least you're not forcing your beliefs on us
