  • My attempt of making a full carbon board for my surf foil. Part 2
    I know that I have to use a respirator now! At the time of this build I wasn't aware of the dangers of Epoxy and carbon fibre sanding dust.

    The ridges on the carbon at the video start are resin ridges, which occur when the cloth is over saturated. Two easy ways to prevent resin ridges: 1. Don't use too much resin, or squeegy off the extra, and 2. Wrap the peel ply with breather cloth, which will soak up extra resin, preventing resin ridges from forming.

    Vet board! Wij gaan het zelf ook proberen. Ik heb alleen 2 vraagjes:
    1: Hoe heb je de witte foil rails vastgemaakt in de high density track box?
    2: Welk frees bitje gebruik je bij 16min20 en waar heb je die gekocht?

    • @Dzjiefoils
      @Dzjiefoils  3 года назад

      Ha Wesley,..
      1. De vinboxen heb ik als 1 stuk gekocht. Foil track box noem je dat volgens mij. Je kunt ze tegenwoordig gewoon op Alieexpress kopen volgens mij.
      2. Ik heb een frees gebruikt met geleider wieltje. Als je dit op google intypt zie je vanzelf wat ik bedoel. Het wieltje loopt langs de binnenkant van de finbox waardoor de frees precies de contouren van de box volgt.

    • @Dzjiefoils

      Die finboxen moeten er iets bovenuit steken zodat je ze open kan schuren

    • @Dzjiefoils
      @Dzjiefoils  2 месяца назад +1

      Je schuurt dan je carbon of glasvezel open en je schuurt een paar mm van je finbox af zodat alles gelijk loopt met de onderkant van je board.

    • @Dzjiefoils

      You could still see the outlines of the finbox if you looked very close. So I found the middle of the box and drilled there.

    That looks great. I am just about to start my own build. What is the final weight and what sort of carbon did you use?

    • @Dzjiefoils
      @Dzjiefoils  3 года назад +1

      @tahfiet Thanks mate: the final weight is 3.9kg but I think I can make the next one lighter. This time I used 3 layers of 200g/m2 plain weave carbon on both the top and the bottom of the board. But I believe it’s strong enough to use only 2 layers. www.carbonwinkel.nl/mobile/product/413-carbon-weefsel-200-g-m-aero

    Do you think it was okay to sand the carbon directly after vacuum or would it have been better to add a layer of epoxy as to not ruin the carbon weave?

    • @Dzjiefoils
      @Dzjiefoils  3 года назад +2

      Yes that would have been better. But the peelply leaves small dots of epoxy on the carbon. So im mostly sanding epoxy. Only in the hight spots i’m sanding the carbon. And because I have 3 layers of carbon I wasn’t really worried about losing carbon strength. But next time I will use less layers of carbon and finish with a thin fibreglass layer. So I only sand the fibreglass.

    • @AlchemySurfboards
      @AlchemySurfboards Год назад

      @@Dzjiefoils would u lightly sand each layer of carbon or add a hot coat to the carbon layers theyn a final glass layer then sand?

    • @Dzjiefoils
      @Dzjiefoils  Год назад +1

      @@AlchemySurfboards if you put a hotcoat on the carbon then you don’t need aa glass layer on top of that. If I would build this board again I would use 1 layer of carbon on the top and the bottom , sand away the imperfections from.
      The vacuumbag process and a hotcoat or filler coat with microballoons. Sand that layer down and do a final hotcoat.

    • @Dzjiefoils

      I’m currently working on editing part 3... so you will see if it works! I bought the EPS from a guy who built his own house and used the eps to insulate the floor. He had ordered too much so he sold some leftovers on Marktplaats.nl (the Dutch craigslist/ebay).
      Before I saw his add I was struggling too to find these large pieces of EPS.

    I have built my own foil board too but when I do the hot coat it comes really bad like your fist time what should I do?

    • @Dzjiefoils
      @Dzjiefoils  2 года назад +1

      Ah thats too bad! Make sure you clean the board very well before you start your hot coat. I cleaned my board with acetone before I did the hotcoat. That, or the paint caused a reaction to the epoxy.
      I now use ammonia mixed with hot water to clean before hotcoat. Make sure all the water+ammonia is evaporated before doing the hotcoat. Also make sure that you apply and let the hotcoat dry in a dust free area. Every particle of dust that touches your board can create a fish eye in the epoxy. I also sometimes use a bit of tape to run over the board that picks up all the dust still on the board after cleaning.
