- Choosing a new exhaust system for your Sportster is a big deal, but which one is the right one? We'll take a look at what slip-ons, 2 into 2 and 2 into 1 exhaust systems have to offer, exhaust baffles effect on exhaust performance, compare some dyno charts and see what makes the power and where. You might be surprised to which exhaust systems come out on top, the most expensive setup isn't always the best.

I am using the standard headers on my modified '06 XL1200R with S&S taper mufflers which are no longer available...... I found Supertrapp 2 into 1's to be very restrictive at higher revs with closed end caps as are taper mufflers from Cycle Shack - their slash cuts are better 'cos you can get the baffle out to modify it. If you hold the muffler up to the eye and you can see through it then it'll breath but the baffle must not be smooth inside. Check out Kevin Baxter Pro Twin's channel - he explains things much better than I can. S&S Tapers had a sort of straight through but the baffles actually had like, fingers protruding from the inner surface rather than just looking smooth with holes in them..... best description I can give is like baffles for drag pipes.....
What are your thoughts on torque cones with drag pipes on stock 883 with SE air cleaner
Torque cones are a must if you're running drag pipes on an 883. Without them it will lose it's bottom end power, still run good wide open though!
Quick question. I changed my air filter to a performance air filter and some some slip ons that are pretty much hollow with no baffles on my 2019 iron 883. I tuned with a screaming eagle tuner. But it’s seems that the engine is turning off on me. Should I tune with a Vance an hones tuner that will give it more airflow?
Your bike is cutting out on you? I would suspect a lack of fuel with the SE tuner. Is it the street tuner?
V&h short shots… I have them and most of my riding is on surface streets. In the valley of the sun we have a lot of walls along the road. These things on the 883 will literally wake the dead. Once you get the bike warmed up these exhaust will turn heads and people will know you’re around. At 3500rpms in 3rd gear doing 45 to 53mps it is the coolest loudest thing I’ve ever heard. Forget about going under an over pass, open it up and your ear wax will vibrate out… love them
I have 07 nightster I bought V&H short shots. Left them on 2 days sold to my brother in law. Took my stock mufflers and drilled out the baffles with a 2 inch hole saw. Bought a short section of 2 in. ID pipe drove in the mufflers and had them tig welded. Bought a set V&H comp. Baffles sounds just like short shots. Very little money.

I had flare out slip ons on my sportster when I bought it. They were too loud, mechanical baffles. Couldnt talk at a reasonable level standing next to it at idle and was very loud cruising. My son couldn't hear his bike with a thunderheader 2 into 1 when riding next to me. I put modded stock mufflers back on it . I used an inch and a quarter hole saw on an extension to open the cap on baffle. It's fairly quiet now at idle and cruising speed and gets pretty loud when I open the throttle. Sounds good, I like it
This is exactly the information I have been looking for, thank you! I just converted my '01 883 to 1200, with head work on the stock heads, big fin 1200 cylinders, reverse dome pistons, new valves and springs, barnett clutch, big sucker air filter, re-jetted carb. Then I wasn't sure what to do with the pipes, because it had the stock mufflers before the build and that was not going to work for obvious reasons. A guy at the shop had an extra set of slip-ons, so he gave them to me and I installed them. I noticed they do have a single baffle in them, looks to be about an inch or maybe 3/4" in size. They perform great as far as I can tell, but really I wasn't sure, but your information answered my questions about them. I will keep these slip-ons. With the cams it has too, the power really starts coming on strong around 3500rpm and pulls like a beast up to 5500rpm. Anyway, great video and info, and just subscribed.

Nice to see your exhaust review. I put the Magna Flow Arlen Ness FBomb and went with the thundermax tuner on my Slim S. I love it. Its way more powerful then it was stock. Watching from Upstate Ny
That exhaust makes a lot of power, l was really surprised at how a lot of high dollar exhaust fell flat. I'd imagine your bike runs really good with that ThunderMax on there, they are well worth the money.
I prefer gooseneck pipes with thunder torque inserts!😎

I went from stock, to the Vance and Hines short shots, and then I swapped the short shots out for a Vance and Hines brushed Stainless 2-1 upswept exhaust and I will never look back. This exhaust is beautiful in every way!
The short shots look good but dang they are loud lol! That new 2 into 1 up sweep they came out with is frickin good looking! It looks sweet on all the new Harleys.

Very interesting vid, I learned a lot. A few yrs ago I picked up a gem, a 1995 1200 w/1500 orig mi. It had & still does the Screaming Eagle slip ons & I love them. It’s not super loud but has a nice growl to it. You’re right, great low end torque which is what you want for street riding but still can handle 4 to 5,000 rpm with no problem. I enjoy sometimes riding in the higher rpm’s & the bike can handle it with no problem. 10,000 trouble free miles here & I ride it pretty hard, nice job!
That's quite a find with 1500 original miles, the Screamin Eagle exhaust aren't nearly as good today as they used to be. The EPA has really cracked down on Harley, now their performance exhaust are only marginally louder than stock but they perform really well for torque.

@@andypants1000 Oh man I missed one that the parts manager at my Harley Dealer had. He sold it a few days before I found out about it, it went to Europe. They are really popular over there, they are one of my favorite sportsters.
Of all the Exhaust Systems on my past-owned HD's order-the Thunderheader 2 into 1 on my 2002 Dyna Super Glide Sport was the hands down best exhaust!
Yeah Thunderheader is a dang good exhaust! They really makes some good power and they sound awesome.
Best bang for the buck... Rush slipons with the stock headpipes. With a good tune the power is comparable to all but the very best 2 into 1 setups with minimal drop off at high rpms, and they sound good.
I'll add, as far as I can tell, none of the other slipons really compare well to the Rush's, performance wise.
Those Rush slip ons are comparable to the Patriot, they give up nothing to that exhaust which you can't get anymore. There's a lot to be said for the factory header and rush slip ons. You've got the wring the guts out of the bike to get to where a two into one would overcome the slip ons.

@@GixxerFoo mixed bag of news...leg is doing so well that the screws in my knee were impeding progress. Had a third surgery on the arm 4 days ago, even though my elbow still isn't in one piece, that hardware had to come out because it was harboring bacteria and keeping my elbow infected. So now i'm back in a huge, heavily-bandaged splint for at least two weeks, and probably a brace to limit elbow bend after that. But while i was under, he took 4 screws out of my knee so as soon as the soft tissue heals from that I should be able to do more and have a lot less pain in my knee.

You can't go wrong with those exhaust on a Sportster, they are look good on there. How are you liking that Iron 1200? I would of got one if it was available when I bought my bike.

Your statement that it Works like 2 into 1 is literally true , but i am stilll skeptical whether we need to fit the tuner or not for a slip on exhaust and uses a k and e Air filter.

If you're going to combine a high flow filter and exhaust you will for sure want a tune. Just slip ons with the stock air cleaner you can get away with it. I don't like it personally but it's doable on a fuel injected bike. But if it's a carbed bike you will for sure need to rejet for any changes.
I have bassani firepower slip ons and they make pretty decent power. I am going to switch for rush slip ons with 1 3/4" baffles.
Man Rush slip ons make some incredible power, they even make more in a more useable rpm range. It's not until waaay at the top end the full exhaust takes over and not by much!
@@GixxerFoo I honestly don't think you can find a better dollar per hp exhaust out there than the rush slip ons
I would recommend taking a look at the forcewinder exhaust
It ticks all the boxes
It makes good power
Its loud
Its very choppy
Its not the cheapest thing at close to 800$
But its worth it
Have the same one on my M2 Cyclone

What make and model is your bike?
I want a full system that increases all around performance. What is your recommendation
With what's available now in a full system that's hard to do with all the exhaust being catalyzed in 2024. Even new full systems, I would go with a Two Brothers system or D&D Fat Cat. Those are really good full systems that aren't catalyzed yet.
Have you considered adding the DK custom's thunder torque inserts on your slip ons?
Those are awesome if you're running some very short drag pipes, that will help keep your bottom end power.
Own a 2,007 Sportster XL1200 Custom, all chrome look. Based on looks and sound, not on power (like riding not racing), What top 3 recomendation on chrome exhaust would be your prefference?
The Vance Hines Twin Slash 3 is hard to beat, Cobra makes some slick slip on exhaust and the Python slip ons, those are some of the best out there in my opinion.
I had those black screaming eagle slip ons with stock headers it was way to quiet felt no power difference with oem pipes screaming eagle brand went with a vance and hines 2into1 upswept pipe major difference all around

I did the 1200 sidewinder s&s bigbore kit,rsd turbine big sucker intake,v&h 2into1,fp3,screaming eagle plugs,taylor wires.upgraded to a 4.5 gal tank also next move is 482 s&s cams
I put some quiet baffles on my wife’s 883 with short shots and I might as well shoved a potato in the exhaust and put a Honda 250 motor in it needless to say they came out.
The quiet baffles actually worked on a set of short shots? I've heard a lot of short shot exhaust and with as short as pipes are the quiet baffles didn't really bring the sound down much. Quiet baffles are great for torque low and mid range but they will hurt your wide open throttle performance.
Seriously been thinking about getting some bassani radial sweepers but can’t seem to find any info on how it affects the bike like tank mileage, torque, hp etc etc
It's a two into two system, it will improve over stock, sound good but it's not the biggest gains in horsepower and torque, You will gain horsepower and torque, improve fuel mileage with a good tune and granted you're easy on the throttle.
They'll perform like shit. I looked at them too. I could see them wrapped up on my beat up sporty but they won't give you the performance you want for the price. You'll probably lose power in most rpm range.

Depends, you can get some really loud slip ons on a Sportster. Thunder Header is very loud on a Sportster, but the 2 into 1 in my opinion is quieter on a Sportster, it's a different sound too. They sound a little muddy to me but just my opinion.
I had 02 and 04 883's, 02 volume was just right, 04 too loud, both screamin eagle......I didn't notice a performance difference low end(probably hard to guage) but the 04 did seem to go from 60 or greater to 95 faster(4th to 5th around 75)
My dyna has screamin eagle with end cap baffles, perfect volume.......I suppose that means I lose at the higher rpm, thats ok.
The older Screamin Eagle slip ons were more like after market exhaust years ago. Now they are build to meet EPA compliant sound levels.
Hey its shane on his wifes phone again!! Lol. Lost my phone!! Fell out my pocket on the last ride! Sucks but yeah. We talked on what i got done to my sporty. Ill tell you the danmoto 2 into 1 without the baffle works great with my build. I ride in the top end of the rpm's. Im thinking of shortening the can an baffle an trying to baffle it again. With my cams it likes to rev. But its so f-ing loud! Lol
Hammer tested that pipe and it produced some damn good numbers. 😆 my wife cratered her i-phone on her last ride, forgot to zip the jacket pocket and it flew out. She frickin rides wfo. I tried to get her the 883 😆🤷♂️.
Ill tell you bro, if you ever have crank failure, which i hope you dont, but 2004 an on you can use a buell xb12 crank, you have to convert to a buell flywheel because instead of a 1 1/4 shaft it has 1 1/2 shaft an the spline pattern is different. Its a lot better stronger crank an rods an its 3.5 lbs lighter! You will see a huge improvement in acceleration! 3.5lbs is a lot off the rotating assembly! Only reason i say this is because you said your wife is heavy on the throttle. Keep the oil changed! But its prolly a stock crank an its a harley. When you rev em up a lot they will break! Remember BUELL CRANK! like i said i hope it dont happen but if she revs it a lot its gonna happen. But buell crank an flywheel 800.00. Harley sportster stock replacement 1,100.00 just crank! Its a no brainer!
