Wow, fantastic power man. 435w for 29 minutes! Only a select club will ever come close to those numbers . Chapeau! Besides.. your time is less than a minute from beating the KOM AND your riding it solo. Thats amazing in it's own right! Thanks for the video.
Great effort Phil - thanks for living this life and producing these videos - they are excellent. They have helped confirm to me that cycling is often about the failures as well as any achievements.
Don't know how true this is but your only as strong as your lead out man. You lead them all up that climb and your seconds shy of the KOM I think that's awesome! kudos
I lived in Santa Barbara from '90 till '02ish and was literally addicted to this ride for a 5-6 year period. My 'thing' was climbing and there was nothing better climb to train on. I never concerned myself with time that much but I do know that I hovered around 50 minutes on a good day. Seeing these dudes cruise up at 12-15 mph is amazing, hard to comprehend sustained wattage like that.
Phil you have inspired me to go out segment hunting on our local singletrack, (about 100 miles of unmarked.) Stole a couple from another local, feels good!
so a possum is a marsupial not a rodent. i guess being brung up "city boy" south and "country" south are different (but hello - nature channel?) keep up the good work - i love this channel
As you may know, Atlanta has opossums. When I was a kid growing up there I saw plenty alive, and plenty dead on the roads. Phil might have seen a few flat ones on his rides around Tucker. Unfortunately, in GA being country doesn't always mean you're a wiz at some of the intricacies of biology. There were many country boys who thought opossums were rodents.
You told them you wanted to look like one of the guys who sits outside the bar in the sopranos and they made you look like you just stepped out from the 80's. I wore that shit in my youth haha its all coming back. Funny as.
P, that was ballz to the wind, all out, in your face to the 5 riders ahead of you in the climbing order. You should’ve gotten you some of that “eco friendly” aerosol paint, and at the top of the climb - in BIG BOLD LETTERS “””SOLO EFFORT 29 MINS PHIL THIS”””
If the 7 ahead of you on Strava had fellow riders (like you) to help pace them, why do you go solo? Regardless, way to be "in the arena." Inspiring stuff!
it's still 435w in 29min. When Froomey did the lab test, he did 419watts in 20-40min. My guess is Froomey went into the lab test well rested too. Phil weights ~66kg based on online source, while froomey was at 67kg for tours. Tom Dumoulin's stage 10 TT at the giro was 410w average (of course, that doesn't factor in positioning efficiency between the two rider). The only 2 reason I can think of or see why Phil isn't racing anymore is likely due to "recovery speed". Some people can just go on days after days and see very little drop off in performance compared to their peak. Still, if it's a 1 day race, these numbers Phil put up is very impressive and respectable. The other being, and likely the main reason, is just that Phil had his fill of pro racing lol. It probably gets to you suffering day in and day out + being away from home.
@@Deanhess1129 I've done it in my 20s, several times a week. I was obsessed with getting weekly elevation gain and living in SF, it was the easiest way to rack up 15-20k ft of elevation a week. Now 31 old me could never.
Wish you would make a video about motivation and trainng for heavily overweight people. I'm 300lb but love to ride. Unfortunately I'm not good enoigh to ride In a group and it just plain sucks at this point.. Seems like all these cycling channels forget about the overweight guys who want to challenge themself to get to meet certain goals like lose weight and ride In a group. My challenge to you is be a coach tip all skill and weight levels.
He said "sits outside at the bar at Sopranos" but I didn't know what he meant with his Georgia accent. I thought he might have said : Saparanos, Sebranos Sabranos, Sabranos, Sabrenous, Sabranous, etc. I love his work just didn't know what he was saying www.sobolsoft.com
OMG, please never stop this stuff. Most excellent KOM irreverence. Score more irony pts, how about have your pro buds, sans gps, tow you to top of race finishes? Or that be going too far?
A gallon is some archaic British measure of volume, which even the British don't use much any more. 1 gallon is 4.55 litres. A kilogramme is 2.2 pounds. So water is actually 10.01 lbs per gallon. But wait, the US and UK don't even agree on the gallon. A gallon is smaller in the USA than in the UK. Russell Bainbridge is using the US version of the gallon, so he gets 8.41 lbs/gallon (which still seems off, I get 8.33 lbs/gallon for the standard 1 kg/l density of water).
It's not that unlikely. I live near that road and know multiple people that have been struck by cars on it. Perhaps you overestimate the ability of american drivers but it's idiotic to ride without something like a helmet in the name of Strava KOMs.

Phil, you inspire me with every one of these videos!
5:26 Dude in the background seriously struggling to see his screen. Love it.
This is the most awesome video series ever!! Phil is now my favourite cyclist ever. from an u23 in Aus.
You're a legend.
I have so much love for Phil and these videos.
love you too. xoxo

i hit the like button after 45 seconds. nothing can ruin that intro.
The sleeveless cookie top would have easily saved 1 minute.
I enjoyed it... what a series!!!
Soccer is the beautiful game but Cycling is the EPIC game.

First off I just bought your book "Ask a Pro," Excited to read it! 2nd off we have the same garage door opener!
You didn't lose. You still beat 99.99% of everyone. Go get it next time, Bro!
I hate to be that guy, but second is just first of the losers in a race, and this is a race

Next time you pass through AZ, come to snowbowl in flagstaff.
Thanks, Phil!
Phil,
how many pull-ups can you do? You’re a beast who makes good videos! -new subscriber
granted pros aren't riding the roads around me, but these vids make me feel a little better about my futile attempts to get a KOM.

this shit is so hard.

I’m hoping to run this route if they hold the Pier to Peak 1/2 marathon this year

are those supershort drops on the bars? Just a question UCI legal?
Also looks like you're drinking hot sauce straight from the bottle
with that power and speed you retired to early buddy
Remember he's doing these times very fresh with no racing beforehand. Stetina did his time after 152km and 3 days into a stage race.

Mount Tamalpais!
Another great ride, I've only done it twice, in the '90's, as opposed to over a hundred climbs up Gibraltar, mid-90's into early '00's.

those shoes though
Not that different than Deer Creek Rd at Mt Charleston, only about 1/2 mile longer. For 50 year old mere mortals like me that is a tough climb.
Not to worry Phil, you'll get it next time. By the way, Jenn is sweet.
Damn, thought you had that one...

whats that you put in your water papa?
Study the ways of the Possum, and pro cycling may reward you. Did Phil say that?
If you close your eyes when Phil talks... Tony Hawk.
If you close your ears too you might be happier. At least I’ve been told that
Phil Gaimon lol. Keep up the good work Phil enjoyable channel had to binge watch them like the feeling of not having a cookie for weeks and then...
How did Hollywood go?
Is that Katie Compton?!
Poor guy in the cafe can't see shit on his laptop...
Possums are not rodents, but they do look like it.
Phil looks so skinny next to the actor dude
As a fat cyclist, I am intensely desirous of one of those colors jerseys…
Too much wind!
Next time can you down a shot of that HOT SAUCE (15:45) with your 3/4 biddon... this time you did it the wrong way around maaan.
Possums are marsupials not rodents FYI
Water is 8.41 lbs per gallon. Just reduce it on the bike and in your system, then you'll fly up this climbs.🤣
so, dehydrate some?
Studies show a little bit of dehydration doesn't affect performance.
Well, I was joking since Phil was joking about this. But, yes a little dehydration for short periods is okay.

Legit.
Marsupial. Not a rodent.

That helmet is costing you hundreds of grammes on the steep bits and 5 to 10 Watts on the fast bits, and it's completely unnecessary on a climb...
Wear a tight, smooth cap or bandana instead.
This is an open road. It's completely unnecessary until you need it protect your head from colliding with a car.
Which a helmet will often not provide any degree of protection against. Also, it's highly unlikely to happen.
