I love that ride! I was hunkered down for the summer in 2020 at my mother-in-law's house in SB so I got to ride it many times. Early morning starts find you in the fog till you climb high enough then your above the marine layer. It's magical

Love that even when that road narrows and no longer has a line, it’s still wider than most UK rural A-roads 🙂

That's a great ride and great video! For an extended version you can drop into the canyon which is northeast of Cielo and ride it (past a reservoir I think) and climb back out to descend Gibraltar. Gravel Bike California has YT video of that route. Or you can ride in the opposite direction, starting by climbing Gibraltar. Or you can climb San Marcos/Painted Cave, take Cielo to Gibraltar Road and descend back into Santa Barbara. All beautiful rides :)

For me, Old San Marcos Road has eaten a rim and a collar bone on two different occasions. And that was on a descent. You went the hard way!!! Nice to see you pedaling in my neck of the woods!

Cool ride! We lived in a part of the big house at the base of the switchbacks for 22 years. (Just before the 5 mph sign.) I've ridden that route hundreds of times! Lots of great rides nearby, especially the backcountry jeep trails that are closed to vehicles.

Our chains have been snapping a few times in the cold of winter here in Wales. Me and my son do a ton of MTb but I also ride a gravel bike and snapped my thick 9 speed chain last week on a steep climb up to a Welsh gothic castle. In my vid you can hear my scream and then relief as I didn't catch my manhood on the stem. I'll leave you with that thought. Great vid of Santa Barbara's steep climbs. Looks warm and the views fantastic.

I used to make that climb up the lower part for a lunchtime workout. At the time (~1990) I was very fit and used a 42/18 as my lowest gear choice. Buy, I would sometimes go up there just for fun. Loved the quite abs the views. There is a spot somewhere on the upper part when you are totally exhausted and you can just hear your bike and a little creek bubbling off the edge somewhere. The decent can be quite dangerous. Just imagine it with rim brakes going super fast. When I got to the bottom the rims would be too hot to touch. I truly miss that ride and those mountains you are lucky to be able to ride there.

Glad to see you in Santa Barbara. Wish I had seen you on OSM. Next time, keep going on Camino Cielo and descend Gibraltar. Once you get up on Camino Cielo, it’s a nice reward to cruise the ridge line and take in all the views.

You are at least 2 standard deviations more fit than the average American. Making that climb up to the Cumash Caves and the Cielo is something I am looking forward to after loosing some weight. It is interesting they painted what looks like bicycle wheels. But of course they most likely represented the sun and the clockwork of the deep dark and bright Cielo. They understood each dot was likely another sun or moon very far away. Santa Barbara is so close and it would be a shame if I can't make it up a few hours drive for a few thousand feet to pay my respects to the Cumash. Thank you for sharing your rides!

I think this might be a perfect application of a Jones LWB (albeit in titanium with light rims and tires). Once you get rid of the excess weight of the budget option bike, the geometry is amazing for descents if you aren't comfortable on a regular road bike. No feeling like you might go over the bars, no over-weighting of the front wheel, crazy good grip. Not as fast in a straightaway, of course, but as fast overall because you don't feel like you have to constantly brake to keep from flying off the road.

Also, just saw the part where you mentioned the Merlin Cielo. I LUSTED after the version of that Ti bike that had artistic groves (forgot the name of cutting lines in metal) on the main triangle and headbadge. It was around the early '00s. Would love to find one of those used. EDIT: It was actually the '05 Merlin Cyrene that I lusted after. Full Ti with absolutely no stickers and only beautiful engraving (the word I was looking for earlier). Thank you Google for being better than my brain.

We all love 1x....I want to love 1x and I have 1x setups that work. But this is one of those instances where 1x eeks by? There are certainly a multitude of factors in terms of rider and bike, etc, but in terms of basic efficiency, in a situation such as this, either one should be running a different 1x setup or a 2x drivetrain because given the gearing of your cassette Russ as well as the typical "pie plate" cassettes, I would argue that it's 1st gear or bust. My in laws live in the land of 8% or more grade. I have tried a fair number of bikes and drivetrains to try and make the best of the terrain and my so so health cred. So far the best being a 2x9, 11-34, 22-38 (29er). It was still crazy tough but I was able to be mostly in second gear and use first as more of a refresh gear. Still hell but with the ability to take it on with more harmony.
Honestly though if you are bike packing or fat biking why not just run a 1x, 11-34/36 cassette, 24/26 front ring? Especially in hilly, big climb areas. Surely you need top end but if you are rarely if ever there then why not move the small gaps to the low and mid parts of the cassette. I don't need a 11-12-13-14, one tooth gap high range. Give me a 11, 14, 16 and tighten everything else up. Maybe it's me but I don't like being in a situation where my only two choices are spinning or grinding. I converted my fat bike from a 11-42, 32 to a 11-36, 26 and it was the best thing I did. Now I want to do the same to my MTBs. Efficiency really matters and maybe it's just me but it seems like there is a big gap in the industry.

Friendly suggestion to gain climbing power: You're riding too upright. Lean forward. Try using your hands to pull your arms on the hoods while pedaling. Your climbing with only leg power. You may need to alter your handlebar alignment.

It depends on what an individual’s limiter is. If cardiovascular fitness is the weakest link then lowering the handlebars can improve glute activation and hence power. PLP has an anti racer perspective and thus you are not likely to see a discussion of the latest aero winder stuff, power meter, the wearing of racing singlet or attempts at strata KOM’s.
