  • The second track is "In The Midnight Hour" by Wilson Pickett Live on The Midnight Special. I just couldnt fit it in the title lol
Thank you to our alpha patron Joel for these awesome choices! I read up on Otis because I didn't know his story other then "Sittin' On The Dock of The Bay" and wow. This is the concert that shot him to stardom apparently! It's so sad what happened to him... but the energy and exuberance he showed here was amazing and so was the shots of the concert (as always)

Long live the true king of soul, Otis Redding. Lost in a plane crash at 26, but left us so much beautiful music. "these arms of mine", "sittin on the dock of the bay", "fool for you", "come to me", "lovers prayer", "precious love", "what my heart needs", and on and on. We lost a good one that day

For me Otis' performance at Monterey with this song and the incredible performance of "I've Been Loving You (Too Long)" is his best performance. IMO his performance of "I've Been Loving You" is his greatest live performance of all time. The man who, at the time, was considered soul brother number 1 along with James Brown, Otis Redding.

The backing band was all over the radio behind a lot of people back then. They were the house band at Stax basically. The guitarist and bassist (Steve Cropper and Duck Dunn) were particularly prevalent.
Steve also wrote a number of well known songs. And I think Midnight Hour was one of them.

Otis Redding....the King of Soul. Aside from "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay", which everyone and their dog knows, some of his best-known songs include "Respect" and "Try A Little Tenderness". Btw, "Otis Blue" is THE album.
Of note, in 1967, fellow soul singer Aretha Franklin covered and rearranged "Respect", resulting in a bigger hit and her signature song.
At the Monterey Pop Festival in the summer of the cover's release, Otis was quoted playfully describing "Respect" as the song "that a girl took away from me, a friend of mine, this girl she just took this song." 😅

You are a robot, don't lie to me man. Midnight Hour was standard fare for all high school dances back in the day. The liner notes on the original Monterrey album (Just Otis and Jimi) stated that "the crowd was on its feet to dance in the warmth of his fire." Such an incandescent soul. Then gone. Sad x10

Wilson Pickett is better known as "The Wicked Pickett" Alot of the stock footage of the crowd at Monterey has been edited into many videos, usually all of it from the orginial 1968 hour and a half documentary: "Monterey Pop" -- the best of all rock concert films, imo. A must see of a truly magical event. Otis' song is from the extra footage that was added to the box set of the documentary's Criterion collection. I agree: the on-stage footage of "Try a Little Tenderness" is amazing. I believe his stage dynamic was a big influence on Bruce Springsteen. But all of the crowd footage was just randomly thrown together. I did like the cats, though.

Definitely can see the influence of Little Richard on both these guys. Otis Redding was in Little Richards band for a while. I believe Jimi Hendrix ( who was also briefly in Little Richards band ) also backed up Wilson Picket in live shows in New York in '65 or '66. Hendrix was a real journeyman, backing up many front men, before he managed to go off on his own and blow everyone's mind.
