  • Thank you to our patron Bruce D for both of these great picks! Growing up, I heard all kinds of things about this band from a mentor of mine after my dad passed and I kinda thought they were a... christian band. But, no. Mr. Farris was getting DOWN back in the 70s at Florida State.... Great duo track pick! Thank you Bruce!

    Hoyt Axton was a tremendous songwriter. Many people turned his compositions into hits including 3 Dog Night, Steppenwolf, Ringo Starr, The Kingston Trio, Linda Rondstadt and others. He also recorded his own songs, many of which became minor hits. He also worked extensively as an actor.

All the way around! Groovy dudes. They still tour, I guess with Danny and backup singers, etc. In the second song, Danny is on the right in the white shirt, Chuck is the lead singer, and Cory is on the left.

    You will often see Three Dog Night referred to as a "cover band" but typically a cover band covers other people's/groups hits, whereas TDN took other people's/groups much lesser known songs, sometimes thought of by the songwriter as a throw away song, and turned them into big hits. Joy to the World one was definitely a hit back in the day! To illustrate how I grew up, this song was preached about in church as being blasphemous because, gosh darn it, Jeremiah was a prophet and Joy to the World was a hymn. My children knew the lyrics to it before they could properly talk-it was a favorite lullaby (had to slow it down) for Mommy to sing. Three Dog Night had an impressive range of different types of music, as you can see in comparing these two. I have their greatest hits album on vinyl!

  • @stevedahlberg8680

    Jeremiah was a bullfrog; he was a good friend of mine. I guarantee you every kid on the playground could sing this on demand, as well as adults in almost every context there for a while. That's how pervasive that was for a long time.
    But this song one is literally one of my favorite songs. They basically have three lead singers going at it, and then you've got the power of Harry Nilsson behind it lyrically, but the band is so good they do those little stutter steps and so forth.

    • @russallert
      @russallert 2 месяца назад

      When I was a kid, growing up going to church and Sunday school, at Christmastime there would be a carol singalong in Sunday school. The song leader would say "Let's sing Joy To The World (meaning the Christmas song), and some joker would always yell/sing "Jeremiah was a bullfrog!!!"

    I believe both songs were the studio versions; they were lip syncing. 3 Dog Night had three actual lead singers, they didn't play instruments except tambourine and cow bell and they took turns singing lead and back up depending on the song. Each were incredible singers on their own, but magic together. Great band, with tons of radio hits. Their cover of The Band's Chest Fever was a favorite of mine as is the cover of Otis Redding's Try a Little Tenderness. Great stuff!

    What we heard was the studio version o' One. They just mimed along as was common for television broadcasts. No need to waste time settin' up all those microphones 'n instruments, tunin' up or doin' sound checks.

    Three excellent vocalists. Excellent band, I think they are downgraded because they didn't write their own songs, however, they did a great job of selecting material and had lots of hits. Negron was the primary vocalist, both of these songs. Cory Wells could really sing. Try a little tenderness is great, as is Out in the country. Happy Early Birthday Lee!

    3DN - the world's greatest cover band, mega-popular. Fine musicians especially Floyd Sneed the drummer. "Jeremiah was a bullfrog".. there's a Hidden Meaning there. Still trying to decipher it. I imagine Mr Ferris to be a Gandalf-like personage. Perhaps he would know

    Great songs! For another experience, I don't know if you've ever reviewed the band INXS! Highly talented and often overlooked. Try the song, Suicide Blonde. Great singing, great energy, great driving drums and a kick-ass Harmonica! I'm a harp player so I had to mention the Harmonica, one of the most recognized and highly rated performances....
    ENJOY!!!

    These were both the studio versions, but there are definitely better quality versions of the recordings.
