  • Well, as promised, more from Madman Across the Water! A live version from sound of saturday on the BBC back in 1971... and it's absolutely nuts. Elton and Dee just went the hell off here. He is such a fantastic artist, man. And you can't forget Bernie's contributions as his lyrics are the heart of all of this in my opinion. Along with Elton's voice and piano.

Thanks for reacting to this. Madman is a very underrated album, and the title track is MY personal favorite off of it. This performance had to be different because in the intimate, close quarters of the TV studio they had to lose the string section. So Elton made up the difference with piano improvisations.

Although he did may great album, i consider this one to be his best by a significant margin. When i got interested in music at the end of the 70´s i used to see a lot of articles in magazines referring about others albums, especially Goodbye Yellow Brickroad. But GYBR, although great, never managed to hypnotized me as Madman. I never understood why Madman didn’t seem to be as revered

This album was the first one I ever bought with my own money. I was 14. I think it was 1973 and everyone was playing it. It is still in my wheelhouse as a CD and I still am impressed by it. I guess that means it's officially a classic. I'm super glad you found this one. And by the way, you are entering what most people say was their best decade. Head up, eyes in front, and enjoy. You've earned it. There's a quote I stumbled into that I have always loved; "With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams it is still a beautiful world. Be careful; strive to be happy."

Elton has different live versions than the album versions of several songs: Madman Across the Water, 60 Years On, Take Me to the Pilot, Benny and the Jats, Hercules, Rocketman, Empty Sky and many others. Only the 60-ear live version remains the same (probably because it's genius and perfect), Elton improvises the rest at every concert. That's why I listen to all his live concerts from the 70s-80s-90s. He is crazy🤣 And, yes, he has a truly incredible sense of rhythm.

It's a different version because Gus Dudgeon was a major creative contributor to all the albums during this period. He'd pick it up after Elton tracked and went home and take it the rest of the way. You may recall the string arrangement (thanks to Paul Buckmaster) on the studio version. This live performance is being carried by three individuals and they had to fill out a lot of space.

Some people don't like the following version with the Melbourne Orchestra in Sydney, because of the raspiness of his voice due to polyps which is subsequently had removed. It's my fave version though, and I like the raspiness. And I adore the orchestral arrangement as well.

Elton kinda let the rock 'n' roll lifestyle drown him later in the 70s. He even stopped working with Bernie for a short while. But Elton came back strong in the 80s. Yes, his voice had noticeably deepened, but the hits were 80s gold! Of course, you actually have to like some of the more "mainstream" 80 music....a number of people shy away from it, but I grew up in the 80s, and looking back....well....you just had to be there. 😊
"I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues" (1983), "I'm Still Standing" (1983), "Sad Songs (Say So Much)" (1984), "Nikita" (1985), "Sacrifice" (1989)". All solid 80s Elton songs!!! 😃

God bless the BBC, aka the Beeb. This stuff was and is free to view. The BBC at this time broadcast tons of rock and pop music and just let the artists get on with it. At this time there were three TV channels in the UK and BBC2 was the place to go for the real stuff. Check out The Old Grey Whistle Test show; live in the studio with no audience.
