Elton John's 3rd album Madman Across the Water contains nine tracks, each composed and performed by John and with lyrics written by songwriting partner Bernie Taupin. “Madman Across the Water” is the story of a man presumably in a mental institution on the shores of a body of water, a man who may, or may not, really belong there. When the patient says, “Take my word, I'm a madman don't you know,” he's either confirming his insanity or is making a tongue-in-cheek statement. Either way I really like the songs message.
Close #2 for me... Goodbye YBR is #1@@reallymysterious4520
And the line "Better get your coat dear, looks like rain" isn't about literal rain... It's about ending the visit because the 'madman' is going to start crying.
His early stuff is quite something
Another masterpiece, by Bernie, and Elton. Thanks for another excellent reaction! 🎸
Elton John's early music, like this, was his best. This is such a haunting song. Another early 70s masterpiece.
Madman Across The Water was released way back in 1971; it's considered part of Elton John's classic era and arguably one of his
very best. Your commentary is consistently among the very best on RUclips Reactions.
This is definitely one of my favorite Elton songs. The way Nigel Olson plays the drums is so tasteful, and Dave Johnson guitar is perfect. With the strings and it might be Dee on bass , anyway a total vibe song
I agree. They are very tight on every song. Great band.
A MUST HEAR classic from this same album,, Elton John "Levon"...TRUST ME.
Oh yeah! Love it!!!! And Indian Sunset.
@@joycewalbert1413And Tiny Dancer. Love both the suggestions above.
Another very intelligent comprehensive analysis of this complex song. Lyrically and musically very intense in it's delivery and you got it all perfectly.... again, Thanks again.
One of Elton's best. This is an excellent illustration of mental illness. Sad and haunting.
"Madman Across The Water"
I can see very well
There's a boat on the reef with a broken back
And I can see it very well
There's a joke and I know it very well
It's one of those that I told you long ago
Take my word I'm a madman, don't you know
Once a fool had a good part in the play
If it's so would I still be here today
It's quite peculiar in a funny sort of way
They think it's very funny everything I say
Get a load of him, he's so insane
You better get your coat dear
It looks like rain, yeah
We'll come again next Thursday afternoon
The in-laws hope they'll see you very soon
But is it in your conscience that you're after
Another glimpse of the madman across the water
I can see very well
There's a boat on the reef with a broken back
And I can see it very well
There's a joke and I know it very well
It's one of those that I told you long ago
Take my word I'm a madman, don't you know
The ground's a long way down but I need more
Is the nightmare really black
Or are the windows painted
Will they come again next week
Can my mind really take it
We'll come again next Thursday afternoon
The in-laws hope they'll see you very soon
But is it in your conscience that you're after
Another glimpse of a madman across the water
Elton has a great voice and style that few could come close to. His songs lyrics are very emotional and many controversial. Always had a deep respect for his style and flair.
HIGH My Friend, I want our friend JM to do my next favorites from Elton. Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding" and then.... "I've Seen That Movie Too".... "Believe"
@@AliasMark69 yes sir, all great picks. Don't forget about "Burn Down The Mission", "Where to Now St. Peter", "Amoreena", and then of course "All The Girls Love Alice".
All The Girls Love Alice is one that blew my mind first time. love those tunes.@@dabassmann
@@AliasMark69 yeah Mark, we seem to have very similar tastes in music. Have you ever checked out the Snarky Puppy > Sleeper I suggested for you to listen to? The founder, Michael, lives 2 houses down from my brother, but we never get to see him as they are touring so much. I think you'll really like them. ruclips.net/video/kDXnPfA_5pY/видео.html Here's the link
@@AliasMark69You mean just “Believe”? Not trying to be that person, but the song you said was “I Believe In Love” is just “Believe.”
One of John’s timeless song; a brilliant composition by him and Bernie Taupin and superb interpretation by his band.
One of his and Bernie’s best. Great conducting of the orchestra by Paul Buckmaster.
My fav Elton John song !!! Followed closely by I've Seen That Movie Too
#3 and #4 for me.... Empty garden.#1... Funeral for a friend/love lies bleeding #2
@@AliasMark69 We have similar tastes. Empty Garden would be #5 for me, Indian Sunset #3, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road #4
All are among the best from EJ.@@reallymysterious4520
This and Mona Lisa’s and mad hatters my two favorite songs.
Can’t stand to see what he’s become… a Vegas/ lLiberace lounge singer with half his voice… but holy cow… his early years and music was the greatest! I saw him in those days a couple times.. that’s how I prefer to remember him!
EJ is my ALL TIME FAVE. This album is a lie back, close your eyes and just take it in.
You did "Empty Garden" first. This is my 3rd favorite from Sir Elton John.. #2 is "Funeral For A Friend/Loves Lies Bleeding"... I'm sure you'll do it soon.
Do you think he would like I've Seen That Movie Too ?
My 4th fav from Elton.@@reallymysterious4520
Older Elton has an edge to it that is my favorite - burn down the mission / captn fantastic
i saw him in concert back in 72 in El Paso at the sun bowl. he started getting really flamboyant in his costumes. Tumbleweed connection IMO was his best work.
i agree-Tumbleweed Connection is his best album!
Classic Awesomeness
My favorite EJ tune! Thanks.
Eric Clapton - Layla (The Prince's Trust Rock Gala 1988)
Hes talking about himself in the second person here, ya know.
Hey JM you now have to listen to Madman's blood brother 'Indian Sunset' from the same album. Great story telling from Bernie, brilliant musicianship as always from Elton and the band, with the same great orchestral backing arranged by Paul Buckmaster. Cheers for the reaction ✌
Good analysis of the song I thought, especially about the use of his voice. His singing is an instrument, and the way he weaved it into the song is art at its best, why they call him fantastic.
Easily one of his best, and in my estimation, one of the best. No wonder he named the album after it. Great album too.
Another masterpiece
Mona Lisa’s and Madhatters
Burn Down The Mission
fun to play on guitar.
Do yourself a favor and listen to Indian sunset. It'll blow your mind
Beautiful tune
Madman Across The Water is one of my favorite Elton albums ever. Every song is amazing, imho.
@@nickavenoso7851 It is my fav album of his
Back when he wrote and arranged for the music in his head, not the constraints of his band.
I think it is about someone becoming increasingly uncomfortable and conflicted when visiting an elderly parent or relative. The music suggests rising and falling anguish.
The very best of Elton John is 1971 - 1975.
The release of Madman Across the Water in 1971 was the first, full work and partnership (which expands decades), of Elton John & Bernie Taupin. To follow are Albums: Tumbleweed Connection and Honky Chateau.
All 3 are must hear Albums in full! Madman will forever be my personal favorite. Thank you!
Yaaeee boyyy
One of his best albums. Check out "Levon".
Love your channel.
GREAT JOB MAN!!! 😊 SO ELTON HAD THAT SUPER GREAT HIGH PITCH RANGE FOR A SOLID 20 YEARS ( 69-89 ) 👍THIS SONG WAS DEEP AND THE OTHER DEEP TRACK IS : INDIAN SUNSET 😊OF COURSE THE 2 BIGGGG HITS ON THIS ALBUM ( MADMAN ACROSS THE WATER ) ARE : TINY DANCER & LEVON 💯
I really hope he does Indian Sunset.
React to his song "Ticking"
So many don't realize how much more there is to Elton beyond his 80's pop songs or his "Lion King" compositions (all fine in their own right.) His 70's stuff was often deep, artistic and experimental as I guess you're seeing.
Yep, Elton had a voice in the early days. His best stuff, too. Still have his first 8 albums on vinyl from when I was a kid. Paul Buckmaster's work was top-tier.
Check out Elton John - Ticking Musical and lyrical masterpiece.
Mahavishnu Orchestra - trilogy and dawn by the same band.
you really need to react to Indian Sunset from this album brilliant track👍👍
The great Rick wakeman
Another great build up song is “Frozen Love” by Buckingham-Nicks before they were with Fleetwood Mac! Check it out? Thanks
Please reac to Beatles - I've got a feeling (Take 1 live on rooftop)
