Best song and album by Elton John in my opinion. with string arrangement by Paul Buckmaster. The concert for this album was my first ever. I am 67 now and still get chills every time he slides down the note. thanks for reacting to this. Made an old many happy.

I agree wholeheartedly that the Madman album was the pinnacle of Elton John's creativity. After Honky Chateau he went downhill for me in a big way with syrupy dirges and glam and glitz. He sold his soul for shiny baubles.
Gotta admit I like much of the post '71 stuff that I've heard, but I love hearing this different side of Elton!
SAME! My favorite EJ song. So atmospheric, so "FM" from the days when there was that divide.

This song is PHENOMENAL!!!! The orchestral arrangement, and the bass!!!! Nothing can compare! I was only 13 or 14 when this came out and I was a goner after hearing it!!!! My 3 favorites of Elton John’s songs are on this album…Madman, Levon and Tiny Dancer. AMAZING!!!!

So interesting to me; as a young kid, my brother and I collected this music together, my generation took our music seriously. My children listened to pop music, we had no commonality. I enjoy seeing generations after taking music seriously, knowing that Steely Dan was really popular on Tik Tok. I don't know what happened to Gen X, ha! In a way, music echoes the generation that produced it. We took ours very seriously. It's great to see it being rediscovered by the grandchildren. I am finding music from yours I love, now too.
Yes, growing up in the 80s, I kind of stuck to that music, with a little 70s...now with this channel I'm discovering all the 70s that I SHOULD have known...it's been an amazing journey so far these first 3 months! Thanks for watching Ann...
Yes indeed! I love how the voice seems to trail off, over the mountain, and then rising again on the distant mountain. One of your colleagues reviewed a much slimmed down version. This is the beast, and I love playing it. Great guitar and piano...and ensemble. The punchy thing may be an ARP synth.

There's a lot of great stuff from him filmed in the early 70s during his appearances on 'Live from the Pops' our other great show on the BBC. sometimes either with his band or at other times solo on his piano. Stuff like 'Levon', Honkey Cat, Tiny Dancer', Burn Down the Mission , etc.

My absolute favorite EJ song. The orchestral part's discordance really fits the unsettledness of the lyrics, adding to the haunting atmosphere. The hauntingness is also effected by his long wailing falling note on "water" at the end of each stanza. To me it just feels creepy and unsettled and akimbo -- just like madness. In other words a perfect match between lyrics and instrumentation/arrangement/melody. This was never a radio hit but got a lot of play on the FM/AOR stations in the Seattle area in its day. Have I mentioned it's my favorite? Gawd what a good song. Another song on the theme of madman reacting to visitors to the asylum is "Asylum" by Supertramp.
👍😎 My favorite Elton album is 11/17/70 (or 17/11/70) live in a studio. Just before he became REALLY famous. Burn Down the Mission or 60 Years On - I’d suggest.

I think you might enjoy some Traffic. Try The Low Spark of High-heeled Boys. Very mellow, kinda jazzy
Pretty much any band that has Steve Winwood in it needs to be on your list. Some early stuff will be missed due to the decade boundaries (ex. Blind Faith's only album was released in August of 1969. Band members are Winwood, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker of Cream, and Ric Grech. You'll also miss out on his even earlier stuff as part of The Spencer Davis Group). Certainly, do a deep dive into his time with Traffic and then later his solo career (which is very different). He plays lots of instruments (known mainly for keyboards and his unmistakable vocals, but can also shred on guitar when he wants to. He plays bass too and occasionally some other stuff). He also writes, arranges, and produces - you know, your classic underachiever.
Thanks, I have heard Steve's big solo hits, but had no idea he had connections to several other bands!
If you love storytelling, then part of your music journey will surely be delving into the renaissance of the singer/songwriter movement … late 60’s to about 1980. Leonard Cohen, James Taylor, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Carly Simon, Bob Seger, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, Gordon Lightfoot, Carole King, Joni Mitchell. So many. Wonderful discoveries for you.
James Taylor was on my list, but hadn't thought of all those others, even though I know of them all. I know like 0-3 songs from each only...

Since you love this one, you should check out the title track from "Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy"... epic song and album... and autobiographical about he and Bernie's journey in the music business.

@@retroreactions.... Well, though I disagree about Captain Fantastic being his last truly great album, the suggestion of that title track is an excellent one. Except I would listen to it as a pair. Jump ahead an astonishing 31 years and follow it with 'The Captain and the Kid' from the album of the same name. Like Captain F, the album is autobiographical, and the the title track (actually the last on the album) is a delightful, happy, mature song. Elton and Bernie looking back on their lives and thinking, yeah, it was pretty good, all things considered.
But we stuck around for the fireworks

You said you were familiar with his later hits…. have you listened to Mona Lisa’s and Mad Hatters? One of my favorites.

For me, this was the last really great album by Elton; before he became a caricature of himself. This album and the Tumbleweed Connection album are my favorites
Interesting take... there definitely was a shift in style, but I love alot of his later work too... what are your favorite songs of his?
If you are into story telling, Bernie Taupin wrote amazing lyrics on an intense track titled, Ticking from the Caribou album. Although the song is 45-50 years old, the lyrics are still very much current but for the wrong reasons.

Eltons monitors onstage that point right at his head (he hates head phones) are the decibels of a JET ENGINE. EJ and band are the loudest band, louder then the Stones etc

Would you consider the 60’s as well? I’m thinking Simon and Garfunkel. The song is The Boxer. Great storytelling. Also, Paul Simon’s Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes released in 1986 is a great track.

And solo Paul Simon is in the 80’s…so you could do Diamonds if you are interested.
