Elton John- Madman Across the Water Reaction
this song is a masterpiece......Songwriters around the world wish they could write songs like Elton John & Bernie Taupin
And I am certainly one of them.
The early Elton John albums can't be beat.
A little song about visiting a patient in a mental hospital. It brings me joy to see these great songs move a young person today. "Timeless music" isn't just a cliche.
for me there's nothing like early 70s Elton. if you want to hear a masterpiece listen to Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding 1973.
Nothing like old skool Elton his band was top notch back in the day
That is intense. One of Elton John's best songs!
Probably my favorite tune by Elton. It's even aged well, like a fine wine.
This is the Elton John we grew up with. This is who he truly was. Over the past two decades, he’s transformed into more of a pop figure which is fine, but this Elton John is who he will always be in my heart and mind. Thank you for a wonderful reaction to what I consider a masterpiece. You have a tremendous connection to the music in your reactions… very powerful. Thanks so much!
Elton is definitely legendary. And the range of his repertoire is mind-boggling. He worked with the songwiter Bernie Taupin for most of his life, and Bernie deserves a great deal of credit as well.
Absolute masterpiece and still on my playlist to this day !!! Nice choice. 🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼🤘🏼💜💜💜
Your 100 percent right about Eltons voice, so distinct you know it’s him right away! Just saw him last Sunday at Met Life Stadium and he still can belt ‘em out!!!
Bernie's words and Elton's music were just magical in the '70' and 80's. It's fun watching you find all these awesome songs I grew up on.
Levon, Daniel, All The Young Girls Love Alice, Grey Seal, Empty Garden (Hey Johnny), Philadelphia Freedom, Someone Saved My Life Tonight.... the list goes on and on and on. But these are a good start! Love your channel!!!
I'm 63 and I'll try and share what it was like growing up with Elton John from the age of 13. There is Elton John the artist, then later, came Elton John the performer. As an artist, he is the master at studio arrangements. His early albums almost always included symphony orchestral arrangements (orchestras don't tour well). Like "Madman Across The Water" you just reacted to. His personal favorite is "The Greatest Discovery". He also wrote instrumental pieces like "Funeral For A Friend/Love lies Bleeding" and "Your Starter For.../Tonight". Both are CRAZY good. Someone very recently reacted to "Where To Now St. Peter". To paraphrase "Lyrics - perfect, piano - perfect, vocals - perfect, backing vocals, guitar, drums, strings - perfect. Simply perfection."
Now I'll take you back to 1970. There were no FM radios in the family car. Only AM. FM radio really only had NPR. Then on Friday evenings, they'd play an entire album from a growing, non-AM artist. Elton John was their darling. For us to hear the album, we'd buy an FM receiver with two speakers (FM was in stereo) and plug in a turn-table to the receiver for when we bought an album. All of our friends would come over on Friday night and we'd listen to the album on FM radio.
Elton John would put out an album every six months or so. To promote his albums he'd go on tour. That's when Elton John the performer showed up. Most of his early "youtube" performances are actually done in studios. He even recorded an album from one of them (11-17-70). I'd recommend "Elton John - Saturday Night’s Alright (For Fighting) (Central Park, NYC 1980)" (posted Aug 26, 2019) to see him performing. In the 70s, I saw him 6 times. We all just wanted to be in that audience.
Enjoy the journey, because then came the 80s and the 90s
There should be 100 likes on this comment!!! I can only do it one time!!!!🤣🤣🥰🥰🥰🥰
I love EVERY decade.
this is definitely one of his best songs.
For one album to contain this acid-dream nightmare AND also the sweetness of "Tiny Dancer", man, that is one challenging album.
He is definitely one of the very greats. What’s sad is all the greats are at the end of their careers 😢
Awesome he is still here with us today!
wow! Haven't heard this in over 40 years...very impactful!
Perhaps his best tune ever...I was a kid when I first heard this song... Bomb is all I can say..........

Great call on the selection! A lot of people only hear the commercial, "poppy" Elton.....
What a great song, they were dead serious when they laid this down!
I'm like a broken record with this, but here again is music from a time when music was great.
Today's music is god awful. It's disposable. Instantly forgettable. Here today, gone today
Very true. It's all made on computers using the same pre-recorded loops and samples. It all sounds the same.
Home One it sucks, today’s noise sucks big ones.
Well said...here today gone today! I'm gonna use that.
Elton “Someone saved my life tonight” “Have mercy on the criminal” I’ve seen that movie too” “Tonight” “Funereal for a friend/ love lies bleeding” The diversity is unlike any artist genius..
A Ton of talent. Great writing and a Great back up band. He's a bit of a diva but He's entitled to be in my book. What can you say. He's worked with some other major musicians and it's always amazing.
Sir Elton John.
As a side note: make sure you listen to the studio cut of Funeral for a Friend, before hearing a concert version. You’ll appreciate all the excellent production far more.
Very true. Not many really good live versions out there. Central Park is probs the top.
You are able to very eloquently put into words things that I feel but don't say quite as well! Great reaction.
Soooooooo goooood. Like butter. Love watching your reaction. I don’t know how many times this piece gave me goosebumps. Wooooo!
Try "Amy" off Honky Chateau. Then imagine it on 45 speed.
complete quality there; the real deal
Thanks for your reaction on, MadMan Across the Water. A great song by Sir Elton John... Another thought would be Traffic, "Low Spark of High Heeled Boys"
My favorite by Sir Elton John!!!❤❤❤
Wow! Where did this come from? One of my two favorite Elton songs, along with Funeral for a Friend. Needs some great live Elton, find 1976 Edinburgh Playhouse Theater. Someone Saved my Life Tonight, Daniel, Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word, Candle in the Wind. Wonderful stuff...
Title track of his fourth album. Not as well known as some of his others, but includes two other well known songs, Tiny Dancer and Levon.
Great reaction. One of your best!
Very insightful and well worded reaction.
This is the title track from a phenomenal album. Thanks for hitting this- the rarely-heard, grittier side of EJ. Powerful stuff.
MASTERPIECE of an Album......thank you for reacting
Damn groovy bass guitar.
My favorite Elton song.
Elton has so many songs that are a big part of the soundtrack of my life.
So enjoyed your reaction. Great to see someone else enjoy this masterpiece. 😍
One of my favorite Elton songs, up there with Your Song and Harmony.
You nailed my favorite EJ songs!
Wow! Bernie's words are so clever and then to have Elton do what he does to them...AWESOME!
I'm 58 y/o. This came out when I was 7. EJ is my favorite favorite favorite artist. He's so different from anything else you'll ever hear. You should listen to the entire album. Its incredible
I bought this album back in the day at a used record store for a dollar. Oh how I miss the used record stores.
The look on your face at the end of the song, spoke volumes. It was exactly my own over 55+ years ago when I 1st heard the title cut...and I was hooked. By the time Goodbye Yellow Brick Road came out, the Black Detroit audience was ready, and Sir Reginald Dwight even spoke about it was the Black music buyers that brought him to 🇺🇸s attention, and were more than ready for Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, but our anthem was " Bennie & The Jets"!!💯 🎙👍🏾👍🏾
My favorite Elton song...this and Funeral/Love Lies
This is my favorite song by Elton John.
The whole album is awesome.
The song is terrifying......being in an asylum, KNOWING you're not right in the head, KNOWING you aren't going anywhere......and listening to family members' inane bullshit KNOWING they're only visiting you so they can feel better about themselves.
Is the nightmare black, or are the windows painted? [shudder]............
unfortunately i can relate more and more to this song… and for it to be the last song on side 1 and to flip the record over and the next song you hear first on side 2 is a tearjerker about Indian genocide. The album will not let you rest!
some people listen to music, some people feel the music. thanks for your reaction.
So cool you picked this. One of my elton john favs, but not that well known. Thanks.
My favorite EJ song. If you haven't heard Tiny Dancer and Levon from the same album you would love them both!
I once saw a Jaguar with the license plate LEVON in Michigan
Loved your great reaction to this great song! ❤ Thx
"Mona Lisas and mad hatters","tiny dancer","Levon","burn down the mission" ☮️
One of the greatest songs from one of the greatest artists! So many other legendary songs from the 1970’s.Levon, Tiny Dancer, Indian Summer, Candle In The Wind, Daniel, Your Song, where to Now St. Peter
Indian Summer...Amazing!!!!
It's a pleasure and an honour to see you go through these awakenings. How special to witness your evolution to the fullness of self. 🌹👍😌
"Funeral For A Friend / Love Lies Bleeding" - Trust me!
No Rock Star shined brighter than Sir Elton in his prime. He and Bernie could do no wrong.
Your the best! Sincere, transparent...real & thoughtful!
this is amazing music, it was then, it still is...
He had soul in the day. Way back when,,,,
One of my all time fav songs...and my list is short...
EJ’s top 10 pop songs are nothing compared with these brilliant songs that you would only know if you had the albums!☮️❤️thank you for sharing 😎
Been waiting for this.
Waaaay better than "Benny and the Jets". Theres a live version from 1971 I think thats more Jazzy. Check it out! Great stuff!
You found some awesome vintage Elton.
Damn. Forget you did this. Yep. You always rock. My fave by Sir Elton John. Wearing your Scribe Cash shirt again... cause its fricken comfortable!!!
Scribe you can fill a stadium!
He’s not playing this one on his final tour. Was disappointed for sure as I thought I’d get to see it live one more time. This is in my top 5 Elton songs......try “Someone Saved My Life Tonight”....
Elton sir John. Is Hall of famer for sure.
Okay beautiful queen, I see you singing Bennie & The Jets in the intro! You got my attention now and you're my number one boss too LOL! Happy Tuesday sweetheart 👑🌟🌹❤💗💓💕💖💞💘💌😍
Maybe his best studio album…..This song was sung with such passion.
There is a live version out there where Elton goes off the hook on the keys! Check it out. 😊
I watch that version frequently. Nice Jazz feel with mind blowing piano work and solid vocals.
Here we go down the rabbit hole again
Elton John sorry seem to be the hardest word
Indian Sunset from this album will slam your solar plexus. This was one of the first 8 tracks I got when I got my stereo for graduation...yeeeaaah, I'm that old
How Elton consistently could take Bernies lyrics and create masterpiece after masterpiece. He truly belongs alongside the Beatles among the toppermost of the poppermost.
Hey Small Dog!
So much Elton to love!
Try Tiny Dancer. Or if u want to Rock, Bitch is Back or Saturday Night is Alright for Fighting
Madman Across The Water will go down in history as a Top 5 Album of all times. Too bad the Patreon sub did not request “Funeral for a friend” to play with this.
LOVE this one...might be my favorite from Elton!
Never understood it til you broke it down. the sharpest people can get dulled sometimes.
Elton's early stuff was full of masterpieces.
Sad songs say so much
Us fans call the way he pronounces things "Eltonisms." :)
You’re a lovely woman and do a masterful description of E.J’s music, yeah, he put out some jaw dropping pieces. I see someone else recommended a reaction to ‘Funeral for a Friend, Love Lies Bleeding’; from the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. It is a freaking rock n’ roll triumph. I cannot wait to see your reaction to it!
Elton was great. Also try Roy Rogers, Tiny Dancer, Harmony
Hi SC, he's got a live version, no orchestra, more him.
The best one IS the live version from '72 at the Festivall Hall with an orchestra.
3rd time watching you react to this, i hope you don't mind that i shared it to my fb page. you are very good at this, another elton john tune you might like "blue canoe", the b side or side two of yellow brick road, i like better than side one. also, if you could do more supertramp and carpenters
No doubt Elton best song
Check out his performance of Take Me To The Pilot live 1970 on BBC Tv. Also from the same show he does Burn Down The Mission.
Indian Sunset...
I hope you did Levon next.
Check out Tiny Dancer Awesome song.
I actually remember that song 1970s
His first 4 albums were the best, maybe 5
You have Bernie Taupin to thank for his amazing lyrics
Bernie is the guy to the left of EJ in that picture
when this song came out, many listeners assumed it was about richard nixon. i don't know if that's true or not.
the 70's, 2am, smoking pot out my bedroom window, this playing on the radio barely loud enough for me to hear..hoping not to wake my parents....
If you like this try Rudy by Supertramp
I'd love to hear you respond to "Timothy" by The Buoys.
RIP bill withers USE ME
