@@rebeccawilson9933 You're not alone lol; I wasn't into the meaning of lyrics much, but I was into singing along so I learned them all as soon as I could. I even had the complete Tommy album memorized, but that took a while.
And don't forget "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy!" I knew every word of every song!
To me Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is about equal to Dark Side of the Moon as one of the greatest recordings ever done.

Man.....I wore this album "Yellow Brick Road" out 45+ years ago when I was a teenager. The entire album is a Masterpiece. After a while, you start to develop a finer appreciation for tunes like "Grey Seal" and Elton's greatest vocal ever, "All the Young Girls Love Alice" (He sings his a$$ off in that one)
All the Young Girls Love Alice, is one of my favorite Elton John songs. Amoreena and Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy are kinda tied as my favorite.
“Harmony” is another one off of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road that has never gotten the airplay or the recognition it deserves.
There's nothing on that album that I wouldn't listen to any time of the day, any day of the week, but I admit I have a soft spot for All the Young Girls Love Alice - it's quite beautiful in it's own way.

61 years old. So, one of the best songs ever written. Have to buy the LP, listen to the whole thing. Elton was a genius back then.
He and Bernie, who wrote the songs, cranked out several gorgeous albums in the early 1970s. Would like to know what Elton's issue was with Bowie. They went out to a club together and Elton said "he wasn't his cup of tea". Harrison refused to be friends with Bowie too per Eric Idle. Elton once thought Bob Dylan was a gardener who was crashing a party he was having once due to Dylan's shabby attire and apparently yelled at him to get out.
The sound in the original album version is more distinct, and Elton's voice was in its prime, back in 1973.
49 years ago! And his drummer and lead guitarist are STILL playing with him in this video! And they all still ROCK.
Sadly, his longtime bassist Dee Murray passed away several years ago.

Many hail this song as Elton's, magnum opus (work of art). It starts off slowly and a little melancholy, but when Davey Johnstone starts wailing on guitar, and Elton begins ripping on his piano, it becomes a killer rock n roll tune. As others have said, this version is great-but the studio version truly is a masterpiece. This banger is what Elton opened for most of his concerts for years. This song is epic, and it takes a lot of enegry to create this much magic, and he still had the rest of his show to go. What true artists, Elton and his bandmates were/are.
Saw him a couple of weeks ago on his retirement tour. This song absolutely shook Madison Square Garden. It was amazing. He had 3 drummers on stage and you could hear each one individually. Such a tight band and Elton at 74 was flawless. I took my kids. I also have taken them to see Bob Seger, Billy Joel, Kiss because they need to know.
Let's have a Round of Applause for Elton John AND Bernie Taupin who wrote all the Great Lyrics that Elton sings. He was always in the background while Elton was in the Spotlight. One of the Great Songwriting Teams of All Time!

I would display posters and magazine covers and articles all over my wall along with albums opened up to display the graphics. My bedroom as a sixteen year old was like an Elton John Museum,.
Really wish you had done the audio for this one. The production is simply out of this world.
One of the most memorable concerts we experienced in the late seventies. Our seats gave us a direct view of Elton Johns's keyboards. Watching this guys keyboard skill live during his prime career time was out of this world.

For most artists, this incredible performance would be used as the Grand Finale at the END of the show - ending the show with an exhausting high energy performance. But He Opens Most Shows With This!! He's been doing this as his first song (Grand Entrance) for forty nine years and it sounds just as good as ever. The drummer and the guitarist played on the original on the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, and they have been with him on most tours that he has done - almost fifty years of touring with the same drummer and guitarist. And check out the backing vocals also that the musicians do. Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone. Nigel had a hit in 1979 with the song "Dancin' Shoes" which is a nice romantic song.

Elton and his partner BernieTaupin wrote some incredible songs. But for my money, I think this is their greatest masterpiece. Next time you listen to it, listen to the studio recording on Elton's album "Don't Shoot Me I'm the Piano Player." As good as this live performance is, it can't quite measure up to the meticulous attention to detail given in the studio recording. I highly recommend it.
A few other Elton John songs worth listening to (if you haven't already): "Your Song," "Tiny Dancer," "Rocket Man," and a couple that weren't singles but are just phenomenal from his "Tumbleweed Connection" album: "Love Song," and "Where to Now St. Peter?" and "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" from his "Honky Chateau" album. But for just sheer fun, it's hard to top these two singles: "Crocodile Rock" and "Honky Cat."
I do believe you are my favorite reactors. You're a beautiful couple (especially you, Asia, sorry BJ), good humored, still young enough to be easy on the eyes, but mature enough to actually comprehend what's going on with the music. I also like your selection of songs (for the most part). Keep it up!
“Funeral…” is the opening track on the album GOODBYE YELLOW BRICK ROAD, though DON’T SHOOT ME… has some amazing songs on it, too, like “Have Mercy on the Criminal” and “Blues for Baby and Me.”

Bernie wrote some of the best lyrics ever. The years they worked together produced were the best - the B side songs were underrated - Dirty Little Girl etc
"Funeral for a Friend" is the first half (the instrumental part). A local station in New York got THOUSANDS of requests for it in the months after 9/11.
Back in the 70's Elton was at his peak He would sell out stadiums that hold 50 thousand. I saw him at Madison Square Garden around 1975. I GOT GOOSE BUMPS back then. ELTON and Bernie Taupin were the perfect team. Bernie wrote the lyrics and Elton put them to music. I do believe this his last tour. Another one you should see is Billy Joel before he stops touring. Word has it that he is getting ready to call it quits. I also saw him in concert back when he just started out. He is also a legendary performer.
I was born in NYC and lived in Manhattan my first 20 years (1966-1986) so you can imagine all the shows I went to at MSG, the Beacon Theater (formerly the Fillmore East) and all the clubs and concert halls in the city.
On Thanksgiving Day in 1974 my parents took me and my brother to see the sold out Elton John concert at MSG (it sold out in 30 minutes). The concert was beyond belief with just Elton and his excellent band, but he stopped the show after several songs and said he had a surprise special guest.....and out walked John Lennon!!!! The place went absolutely nuts, and it was several minutes before people calmed down enough so they could play. I remember every moment of that show, it was so unbelievable. It wouldn’t be until 1980 before John decided he would play live again and go on tour in the summer of 1981, but it was not to be.
i was lucky enough to see Elton and Billy in concert together at Giants stadium in 1994
@@JK-ld8cd its a shame but they don't make music like this anymore. Most of the artists now ( sorry to say ) just plain old suck. You don't even need a voice ( auto tune) don't need to play an instrument ( computer generated) its watered down music. Thats why country music is so big now, they have alot more talent. This whole world is upside-down, so Sometimes I retreat into my own world and listen to some good old ROCK IN ROLL. I think most of us old geezers do that. I know I always did that. I guess we had our own safe space LOL. KEEP ROCKIN 🎸
@@bobleek6975 you are sooooo right! These artist used to spend a year making an album. The 70's is the most talented era by far. todays stuff is garbage with preprogrammed Oh oH oH's, uw uw uw's. its almost every song. you cant do that to country. You dont need talent to make music today.

My god I miss the 1970's musicality. Most of the bands had intros like he did, then lots of outro's as well. Lots of instruments too. I miss it.

Elton's 60th birthday and 60th time playing MSG.. This Album was recorded in France, 17 of the 22 songs written for this album made it onto this Master piece. It was recorded in 3 days. !!! Been a fan since 1973 and have 3 copies of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and was lucky to see him 9 times between 1980 to 2019.
I thoroughly enjoy watching the two of you with your reactions to music I grew up on. I’m 60 years old now and still get chills whenever I see him on that piano. God bless the both of you.
I've seen him 12 times over the past 30 years. His shows are an EVENT! Best concerts I've ever seen. This concert was on his 60th birthday, and is available to watch online or purchase. It took place at Madison Square Garden. I saw him there front row in 1995. Got to high five him🙂.
This was Elton's Opus. That whole Yellow Brick Road album is great. The title track is my favorite. All The Young Girls Love Alice is a straight up banger. You should just do an album reaction
Elton did not play the moog synthesizer in the live performances another keyboard artist did but it was still awesome! I saw him live in Houston in the early 80s and he opened with these 2 songs and had dry ice fog come up for Funeral for a friend.Fantastic show.ps...he was wearing a bunny costume..lol

Videos like this display the reason I love going to concerts. You get that immediate feedback between the crowd and the artist, plus, you are in the presence of someone you admire. Usually. In this case yes, very much. Never had the good fortune to see Elton live, but I've seen about 500 other ones, like I said I love concerts. Nothing beats live.
Saw Elton live at Red Rocks Amphitheater in the mid '80s, one of the best concerts ever, one great song after another, it could have gone on for days and it wouldn't have been long enough.
SAW HIM LIVE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO AND WATCHED HIM PLAY FROM BEHIND THE STAGE AND WAS AMAZED AT HOW FAST HIS HANDS MOVED! WOW!
Had the absolute pleasure to see Elton John twice last year here in Australia on his Yellow Brick Road farewell tour.

He is one of the last few REAL GOATS, we have left. Great music never gets old. You won’t see any of todays “artist” in 10-15 years. I’ve been a fan for as long as I can remember.
I am 62 years old. I saw him when I was in 10th grade and later when I was about 21 years old. He was truly great.
This live version is so exciting and full of great energy, but I'm just spoiled on the studio version. It is magnificently gorgeous, and takes you through this emotional funeral.
This and "Levon" were his two magnum opuses for me. But that's elevating two of a great,great list of songs.
I finally got to see Elton when I was 43. I'd been trying since I was 17! Lol it was a great experience it kinda felt like my spirit left my body 😆 I think I cried. I was so hoping he would play this song and "Someone saved my life tonight" and he did.❤🍀
These two songs make up one of the best album openings ever.

In 1972 Elton did a live set for the BBC and the The Old Grey Whistle Test. If you want to hear Elton at his best you should check it out. As I've said on a few occasions Mona Lisa's & Mad Hatters is the place to start.
I loved this whole album. It was on Goodbye Yellow Brickroad double album with Bennie and the Jets, this song, oh the absolute magnificence of Elton John's song writing is flawless. This is amazing yall.

I'm a child of the 60's and was in my 20's during the 70's. This is my music and it seems that every reactor that I watch was born in the 80's or later, late 70's at best but wish they would have lived during the 60's, 70's or 80's for the music. The music back then was real and enjoyable to listen to. These 2 pieces you just played are real and enjoyable to listen to. Even though you may not have the most technical knowledge of music I enjoy your reactions they are enjoyable to listen to and done with some knowledge/intellect My wife and I enjoy your reactions because they are knowledgeable and intelligent. Live concerts back in the 60's and 70's all had sections were the band would just jam and when great musicians jam you have a happening!!

Elton, his guitarist Davey and his drummer Nigel have been together their entire careers. Theyve known each other since they were teens, thats why this is so tight

I get excited when youtube people react to this piece. This is my favorite Elton John dong. It is definitely his modt rockin' song. This is off the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. This is the only song I would like to see live that he does. He has performed in Chattanooga several times in the last few years, but, but I have never been able to go see him. This has been due to work schedules. Love this song!

From arguably his best album, this song amazed us I the old days and I am so glad I got to see him, great performer, he was on for 2 3/4 hours and played everything I wanted, including several songs from Madman Across the Water.
Speaking of, you need to react to Madman, both the original studio and then the extended version with Mick Ronson from David Bowie's Spiders from Mars on soaring lead guitar. Elton has so many different songs it is mind blowing, Enjoy! 🎹

I’ve seen Elton John in concert four times. And, it is an experience. Definitely go if you can.
Clear the calendar, and watch this whole concert video. This is Elton's 60th birthday concert at Madison Square Garden. Yes the studio versions maybe master pieces but the live versions take on a life of their own. Pay special attention to Rocket Man and Levon. Enjoy.

Saw Elton in concert 1971 at St. John's Arena, Columbus Ohio. This was the basketball arena for OSU. The entire crowd was dancing, enough to feel the upper deck shaking. Shortly after that concerts were banned because they worried the place might fall apart.
Elton is incredible. Always one of the best concerts to attend

You also need to see him singing with George Michaels. George Michael starts the song and halfway through he calls Elton John out to the stage you need to watch the crowd go nuts when Elton walks out. He’s just complete energy on that stage.
Bernie Taupin and Elton John met through an ad that, I believe, Elton posted looking for a lyricist. Elton’s name was still Reginald Dwight and he was still living at his parents place.

"Funeral for a Friend" is the first instrumental part. Technically it could be considered 2 songs but, you'll never hear them seperate.
Sir Elton's magnum opus. This is why he got to be a Sir Elton. Love that man and song. George Saunders is one of America's best authors, and in his ongoing short-story masterclass on Subscribe, he talks about what makes a good short-story. And you know what? It is the same thing that makes a classic song, a magnum opus, like this. The songs that considered among most band's best have the same thing in common: "Rising Action". Just like this one. Just like Close to the Edge, Supper's Ready, Firth of Fifth, Comfortably Numb, Bridge Over Troubled Waters, and so on. The same is true in Cinema. The best ending in cinematic history is probably from "Cinema Paradiso", which really is paradise. And the ending is a climax of climaxes. Rising Action. Use it.

This album "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" released in 1973, totally brilliant beginning to end. This double track is the album opener. Please continue with 'Candle in the wind' and 'Benny and the Jets'...you may want to keep going through the whole album😁
Funeral For A Friend was the music my brother wanted played at his funeral/memorial mass. I still have a hard time listening to it sometimes. But what an instrumental !!!
There are 2 great 70's double albums. Songs In The Key Of Life and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Both are well worth owning in some form or another.

I chose the live version because Elton was in Dallas Ft. Worth and Asia and BJ weren’t able to attend. I’m an old man and seen Elton a few times. I wanted Asia and BJ to feel what it’s like to watch him come on that stage to that song and experience what I’ve felt a few times before! Hope you all have a great week. ❤️✌🏾🌈
Listen to the album sometime. It was when Elton's voice was at its peak. An awesome musical milestone.
I've seen him live 13X. I wish you could have experienced his physical theatrics when he was younger. He felt he needed to be theatrical because he was stuck behind a 9ft. piano, so he gave you more than you could expect from just a singer/songwriter/piano player. His 1st Philly area concert was at the Electric Factory-all in front of maybe 200 people. He had a clown on his pants, and when he pulled a string it would light up. I'll leave it to your imagination of where on his pants the clown was.

One of my favorite all time rock and pop artist! I've been listening to EJ since I was 9 or 10. I have just about all of his albums. Especially the older ones. The man is just plain brilliant! He was constantly on the radio during the 70's just killing it with hit after hit. Sir Elton John is what legends are made of!
I got to see him at the Pontiac Silverdome back in '75 or '76. What a great show.

I am glad you like "Elton's Lyrics". FYI The lyrics in the first decades were not from Elton. The biggest phase of Elton's music was thru the lyrics of Bernie Taupin and were the best ever.
