I was in high school and college in the '80s and I'd heard Elton John pretty regularly on radio. I liked a lot of the songs (but not all) and that was it. My college roommates decided to take a train to New York to see him live because .. why not? And live you just get one great song after another, banger ... banger ... another banger. That was when I realized what a legend Elton is. I later read an interview with him and he talked about that show as taking place at his lowest moments in life, he felt fat, unloved, he thought his performances were awful. And I was like 'wait... we all thought it was really good!'

Elton John is an amazing song writer, musician, and performer... Bernie Taupin's lyrics are unparalleled, and the original EJ Band with Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson and Davey Johnstone created a sound that topped the charts for years

I'll tell you how high a regard Elton John has for Davey Johnstone. . .he's the musical director for the band. Awesome guitarist. Check out "Saturday Night's All Right for Fighting" from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and "The Bitch is Back" from Caribou to get the full flavor of the distinctive guitar sound that Davey throws into the mix! Know I'm not a Patreon member, but you'll kick yourself if you don't react to these two songs!!!!

This live version of Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is from 1980. Middle period Elton. Elton had already been out for ten years by then. The songs were from Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, from 1973.

Hey T, glad you liked them. I haven't steered you wrong yet. Both songs were released in 1973. He was 75 in that 2022 live performance. Most people know his pop / pop rock stuff, but he's got stuff that he jams on. Davey Johnstone is a great guitarist and very underrated. Dream Theater did a great cover of Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.

  • @llschnitz

Have Mercy features Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on drums. Davey was NOT at the Central Park concert but Nigel was. Nigel started with Elton way back in 1969. Davey joined the band in 1972. The two of them have played on the majority of Elton concerts for the past half century and can still rock with the best of them.

I was 16 when I saw Elton John for the first time. My opinion about him was based on his pop stuff, most of which was not my kind of music. I was utterly blown away by his performance and told everyone that it was my favorite concert ever. The next time I saw him live was with my wife in 2019 and again was thoroughly entertained. His older stuff and ability to bring it to a live audience make him unique.

Great reaction to a great artist! I loved Elton up until the mid 70's then not so much. As well as having a great band, his writing partner was Bernie Taupin who wrote the lyrics. EJ was hugely successful globally, especially in the UK (where he's from) and in the US.
'Funeral for a friend' is very different from most of his work being instrumental and almost 'prog rock' but it is a great show opener! It was great to hear 'Have mercy...' it is one of my many favourites. The whole 'Don't shoot me.....' and 'Goodbye yellow brick road' albums are both amazing and for me his best work. Cheers.

The original recordings of these songs from "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" were recorded when he was about 25-26 years old. . .think on that one for a minute. He used to sing effortless falsettos, but the years and a throat operation and a singing coach taught him to sing the tenor voice he uses in his later years. Also good to see his classic lineup of Davey Johnstone on guitar and Nigel Olsson on the drums, whose drumming I absolutely adore! The only one missing from the classic linup is Dee Murray, who, sadly passed away in 1993. In any case, the enormous discography of Elton John represents a rabbit hole that if you go down it, you may never come out! But I don't think you'll mind, and I certainly won't! Here's hoping that you take the Elton John journey!!!

My teenage boyhood idol! I still think Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding is one of the greatest recorded tracks I have ever heard, and for me personally his best work ever. I know this is live, so this will be interesting. The second part, "Have Mercy" I'm guessing may be "Have Mercy on the Criminal" from his album "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player." So this should be interesting. One thing I have noticed, as I've seen Elton John's live performances before is I've been very impressed by the quality of the music live. Very good sound engineering, better than many other bands I've heard live and been disappointed with. This should be interesting! Let's go!!!!!

One of Davey's best guitar work is on "Saturday Night's Allright for Fighting" and "Funeral For a Friend" but he didn't play on the Central Park performance. About ten years ago, Elton's guitarist Davey Johnstone played a couple of songs with Little Richard. Richard asked Johnstone, "Man! Where Are You From?". Johnstone replied, "From Scotland". Little Richard replied, "The BLACK part of Scotland??" ROFL.

A better introduction to Elton John would be Rocket Man or Tiny Dancer (Live on the BBC from 1972) or Saturday Night's Allright for Fighting or a number of others. Best version of Funeral For a Friend is the Live in Madison Square Garden One Night Only concert. Or go ahead and listen to the studio version on the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album. Elton John is the fourth biggest selling act of all time, behind Elvis, The Beatles, and Michael Jackson. He has had more top ten hits in the U.S. than any solo artist. He has sold somewhere around 300 million records in his career.
