- Marvin Harrison Jr. and Malik Nabers are in a battle for WR1 in the 2024 NFL draft, and today we will determine who between them is better. Harrison Jr. hails from The Ohio State University and is the easy choice; he is tall, fast, strong, and has put up prolific stats, however, LSU’s Malik Nabers has everything it takes to dethrone him come draft day. Nabers has rare movement ability, an endless highlight reel of long explosive catches, and in my opinion more high-end potential, despite having a lower floor. Who is going to be WR1 come draft day? This week’s episode uses the coaches all 22 to analyze the Ohio State Buckeyes Wide Receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and LSU’s Wide Receiver Malik Nabers as they prepare for the 2024 NFL draft.

Give me your elevator pitch on whether you think Nabers or Harrison Jr. is the WR1.
One played with a top 3 NFL pick his whole career. The other played with a guy that will be in the UFL or CFL in a few years and stroud for a single year which isn’t much.
If Marv can be a true X and play the "DeAndre Hopkins role", why gamble on a receiver with a marginally higher ceiling and so much more to prove?
I think that MHJ is the better prospect, but isn't it disrespectful to not but Odunze in the conversation considering many believe that he is better than Nabers? I've seen most people say that MHJ is 1, and Nabers is 2, bur thinking that Odunze is better than Nabers is more common than thinking that Nabers is better than MHJ.
@@andrewrichter2231 Many analysts that prioritize physical traits have Nabers over Marv, leaving Odunze third. Analysts that prioritize refinement have Marv over Odunze. He's not looked at in that light because neither camp sees him as potentially WR1.
I lean Harrison because I'm a fan of OSU. However, I'm not sure you could go wrong with either.
Pointing out how MHJ uses his hands similar to a pass rusher was excellently done!
To me he is like the WR equivalent of Patrick Surtain II. Both really good athletes, good size and extremely technically sound. Very much a ultra low floor can't miss type of prospect.

I think if Nabers had a better release from the line, he would be the overall better receiver.. Harrison has really really really good footwork and release technique. Prob trained well from his father.

Very reasonable grades. QB and WR 2024 class are great studies for quality and differences in styles.
Flip Nabers And Harrison. You can't win with routes consistently with brute force at the NFL level.
Especially if the team he gets drafted to tries to line him up at an outside receiver position instead of in the slot. Not to mention the slot receiver generally takes more physical punishment as well.
Marvin is far more versatile and has a toolkit which translates better the the NFL and can be applied to farmore situations.
Its as much a mental game vs NFL DBs as it is a physical one. He's deceptively athletic, he runs his routes so smooth and varies his speed on routes instead of going 100% all out on every play it can seem like he's less athletic. The thing is that its the complete opposite, his technique and movement is so refined that he's able to achieve separation and make DBs massively overcomit with minimal effort.
he's winning his routes comprehensively with a fraction of the energy that Nabers does. he uses finess, speed, power, and misdirection. Not only do these translate better to the NFL, they are tools which last for a much longer time.
If you have to rely on just being physically better than the defender on every play, once you loose that you have nothing else. Players like Larry Fitzgerald, D-Hop, and Marvin Harrison Sr. were/are able to have such long careers in the NFL because most of what makes them productive in the NFL doesn't diminish over time. If anything they actually get more powerful as they get more experience.
If all you have is the ability to have that insane burst and extra step on defenders, you may be good for a few seasons but you're not going to be a top WR for 10+ years.
Watch Marvins tape and you can see how often he's able to just completely cook DBs not through using raw speed, but just by making them mentally and physically overcommit to the wrong route. hes so deep in their head that hes not just winning one rep at a time. hes made them stop trusting their own instincts. past a certain point they either commit 100% or hesitate and play off him, but no matter what they decide to do he will make them wrong.
In the 4th quarter of a SuperBowl when everyone's exhausted. Marvin is going to still be able to beat DBs, and he's going to have far more energy left in the tank than someone like Nabers whos been going full-afterburners on every play for the entire game.
Its not like Nabers can just get coached to have the kind of technique and WR IQ that Marvin has either. He can absolutely improve, don't get me wrong. And he almost certainly will once he gets in the NFL. But Marvin has developed those skills over an entire lifetime of being taught by his NFL hall of fame WR father. They are second nature to him. Its the precision of the execution, all the tiny details, making the cut at the exact right millisecond, chopping the arm at just the right spot on the wrist. Its all those little things being done perfectly that's the difference between it working and it not working. its also why he can make it work without unnecessary exertion. All that extra effort is only needed to make up for lack of technique/sloppy execution.
All that being said, Nabers would normally be the best WR in his draft year.
But Marvin is actually a generational talent. That term gets thrown around way to much these days. But it absolutely applies to him.
Very very few WRs can win routes so hard that they can basically create an uncontested catch with such little effort/exertion. If he's able to continue doing that at the NFL level its going to be amazing to watch.

Excellent analysis - a good insight in to what issues they will face in the NFL and how important what sort of offence you get drafted to.
If you think about what Alex said in this video and watch the plays, there is a reason Nabers has so many more YAC yds. Alex said that: 1) LSU ran a basic offense where Nabers mostly did stop and go routes. 2) Opposing defenses stopped pressing Nabers. This is why he was wide open on those stop routes and had so much room to run after the catch. You can get open on stop routes all day when the defender is 8-12 yds from you at the snap. Marv is pressed on every play in this video, and he doesn't run a single stop route, and there are a few plays here where he is wide open with room to run and the QB doesn't find him or misses his throw. There are 2 plays in this video that Nabers is pressed and he does stop routes in both with no YAC.
I guess Nabers being significantly faster, shifter, and making defenders miss had zero to do with it , huh?

Huh Harrison is always doubled i watch my Ohio state Buckeyes faithfully he is clear 1 pick because he is 100% nfl ready and he averaged 140 yards plus every game past 2 seasons that why you hear ESPN and NFL analyst say Marvin is the best player in the draft. His route running is elite when you got a DB press and safety in the back and still ate on every game.

It really depends on what your asking them to do. Marvin looks like he projects to be on the ball (X). While Malik looks like he’ll thrive at the Z and could get favorable matchups in the slot. They’re too different styles of receiver, all depends on what your team needs

Just for clarification, which WR did you want to see go to AZ? With Nabers, you said you'd like to see a team use him similarly to AJ Brown in Tennessee (over the middle), but said Kyler doesnt target the middle. I love Nabers, but a bigger target on the outside like MHJ feels like a perfect fit for Kyler's skillset.

Alex is wrong on Murray. Kyler targeted the middle the 2nd most of ANY QB in the NFL Last year, only reason he didn’t with Kliff is his offense didn’t use the middle a lot. McBride did all his damage with 81recs/881YDs across the middle, Murray can definitely see the middle of the field.

Harrison all day...he's a solid #1 who can get those clutch catches, run every route to perfection and just be consistent...Nabors is more of a gimmick type to me, certain down and play type WR..Harrison better technique and just solid WR. Nabors you can get creative but I don't see him taking over a game week in week out whereas Nabors will have peak moments but just not #1

No one is arguing mhj is better day 1. Route running and release are coachable traits. Taking a slant 40 yards weaving though defenders isn’t.

KM targeted the middle the 2nd most of any QB in the NFL Last year via PFF. McBride had 81 receptions/881 YDs all of his damage done over the middle. Kingsburys offense didn’t use the middle much so Kyler didn’t use the middle much, this new west coast offense does and Murray was one of the most efficient QBs in the NFL targeting the middle last year between 10-20YDs in the intermediate area between the numbers.

Uhh Murray targeted the middle of the field the 2nd most of ANY QB IN THE NFL last year via PFF, the only reason he didn’t with Kliff is because the middle of the field isn’t a big part of his NFL. Maybe check the facts before parroting weak talking points next time. Murray doesn’t have a problem seeing the middle of the field.
Scary part with MHJ is he could easily still add 5-10 lbs of muscle allowing him to be more physical at the point of attack. He's a matchup nightmare. If the Cards pass on him I'll be furious

So yes, it may take him a few years to get there but it's not completely out of the realm of possibility for him to add more muscle to his frame. Also keep in mind NFL strength and conditioning programs are among the best in the world.
@@markd7762 you’re not understanding how much 5-10lbs of lean mass actually is for someone who has trained as long as he has. Building muscle isn’t some magic. Nfl programs are typically geared toward injury prevention and recover, not adding strength and mass.
5-10 more pounds means a reduction in speed and quickness.
It’s kind of unheard of for a top player at a skill position to gain more weight in their career. If anything they lose weight to keep speed.
I’m not saying he can’t do it, but it will make him a worse football player.

Both have an onus of pedigree hanging over them. Now I’m a diehard NY Giants fan & thrilled that Malik Nabers is wearing Giants blue. I was actually torn between Nabers & Rome Odunze where my preference changed a few times. It’s a basically just that - preference as you can’t basically lose in choosing any of the three.
Back to onus. Marvin Harrison Jr was literally made to be a professional football player & wide receiver. He has the onus, specter & burden of having to live up to his pedigree & will forever be compared to his legendary father. Will it be a burden or blessing? If Wan’Dale & Hyatt can take next level leaps, then we should have one of the best WR groups in the league.
Nabers has to live up to the LSU receiver hype train. Odell. Ja’Marr Chase. Etc It’s certainly no where near Harrison Jr’s pressure though. I’m sure they’ll be fine. The Giants needed a taller receiver but even though Nabers isn’t one of the taller receivers at 6’ we had to pick him because a #1 WR was our biggest need. He’s freaking explosive. When you watch his tape you can just see he plays at another speed & has that extra gear. Our receiving corps has a core of Nabers, Darius Slayton, Wan’Dale Robinson & Jalin Hyatt. That is a talented & impressive group. They’re all different & present as a balanced & deep group who have diverse skill sets.
This is a group that could be very dangerous & productive. Nabers was one of the best prospects in the draft. Slayton is Mr Steady. Wan’Dale took a big leap after a rookie year in which he flashed but got hirt for the year around midway through. Jalin Hyatt showed off his world class speed & proved he isn’t a one-trick pony & is more polished than just a speed demon.
But what a class of receivers. The 2024 receiver class will certainly go down in history. Two little asides. Of course the freaking Chiefs had to draft 40 year combine record smasher Xavier 4:21 Worthy😨🫤 FSU stud receiver Keon Colemen’s first presser went viral due to his charming personality & comedic charisma. The 6’4” 216lb Keon Coleman fell to the first pick in Round 2 due to his “slow” 4:61 combine 40 time despite strong production & excellent tape. This kid is precocious, super likable & has his head screwed on correctly. I think he’s going to be a good one. He could have a DK Metcalf type of trajectory. I’m pulling for the kid🙂👍

We can just stop at the releases honestly. Knowing how to separate is the most important trait for me in scouting WRs. Seen too many "explosive" "burners" "physical" WRs get to the NFL and just become average athletes.
Nabers separated just fine against Terrion Arnold, Kool-Aid McKinstry, and Caleb Downs.

Marv is skill paired with size, has arguably the best hands and route running ability in the class (only person in the discussion on that is Ladd) and he’s already filled out his frame. Malik is an incredible talent but Marv is the definition of the term generational

Emeke Egbuka might not be on the level of Brian Thomas Jr. but also could have easily been a first round selection had he declared. Nabers also had a Heisman winner throwing him the ball versus what Marvin Harrison Jr had.
but take into account that LSU is in the SEC, for me personally, this seperates MHJ and Nabers, MHJ is the more 'complete WR' but either option is great from the NFL teams@@Unknown-ox1yq

I’m new to the ins and outs of football especially in contrast to how much I know about basketball but Marvin Harrison using D-Line techniques to beat press coverage at the LOS is so cool.
It probably is something other receivers do as well but I have never paid attention to how these elite receivers win beyond using their measurable and athleticism.
My take is Nabers will be the better receiver in the nfl with an impact like Chase.

every year theres always hip around some dude late in the scouting process because everyone gets bored. Marv is the best. Marv can do everything Nabers does and he does more things better.
Things I noticed
Harrison: takes a back step on some of his releases and looks likes he takes plays off. But uses leverage wisely
Neighbors: Has potential with his size but at the same time elite speed and reminds me of JJ but doesn't come back to routes
If the Titans take him watch out OMG D Hop, and Ridley on the outside with Nabers in the slot. Now that would be some firepower.

That's crazy, when I really started looking at Nabers, I had the same AJB comparison.. with him being smaller it's like you take the bully ball out of AJ but because he's smaller he's noticably more explosive.
That wouldn’t be AJ then with the bully ball lol. I see a stronger OBJ in his game that RAC ability he has is ELITE but he’s more physical then OBJ while being just as explosive
@@smercxz Yeah that's a pretty good comp. Odell was a little more nuanced of a route runner coming out and Nabers isn't as special at the catch point.. but really who is lol I would say Nabers has another gear that Odell never had, which sounds ridiculous, but he is so damn explosive.

Adonai is leagues better than Franklin lol. Size, route running, traits, etc..Troy is likely a 2nd round pick that will be only a deep threat. He’s also very small & not a WR1 or WR2

Great video well done. Nabers is twitchy to me and that is good while Harrison Jr. is Technical to me which is also good. Depends on what traits the teams want but all in all can't go wrong with either. Nabers though has that elite level twitch and elite speed that you can't teach so he's the one for me.
I could just imagine Justin Herbert's deep ball skills with Malik Nabers' blazing speed.
OTOH... would it not be fun if a team had both MHJ and Brenden Rice as receivers. Two ball catchers who are the sons of two of the elite wide receivers of all time.
As a Chargers fan who just watch Keenan Allen traded away to clear cap space, which was the right move btw, I love the fact they're sitting in the #5 spot and will likely get a crack at one of these two receivers. They went with Quentin Johnston last year over Zay Flowers, who was the safer pick, hoping Johnston's rawness could be coached up to his projected high ceiling. It hasn't happened yet so to me, if they get the choice, Harrison is the better pick. But, if he's gone and Nabers is there, you take him, for sure.

Harrison was double up a large majority of the year because Egbuka had to get tightrope surgery and Fleming couldn't win 1 on 1. Plus McCord was horrible, you could see it in some of the clips shown.

I’m the Minnesota game he got pulled by the second half, vs Rutgers he had 2 td’s, vs Notre dame he didn’t do as well but he still had some clutch catches to win the game, and the IU game was McCords first game. I was at the IU game and marv was open 90% of the time, McCord missed him in most of the throws. Stats don’t tell the whole story, watch the games

Harrison is the type of guy who in a couple years will be thought of as a superstar who racks up redzone tds, he’s too technically talented and motivated on improving technique like a pro to be anything less with that body.

Nabers is electric with the ball in his hands, reminds me of Odell that way when he first entered the league, I think Harrison Jr is the better all around WR and is more NFL ready. Nabers needs some polish and I wouldn't be surprised if his ceiling is higher than Marvin Harrison's after a few seasons in the league. If Nabers can work on his releases that'll go a long long way.
Nabers is the lab mixed of Chase and JJettas. he just needs precisive QB and times to fix his body action. MHJ is considered WR1 because he is a skill perfection.
As a Ohio state fan both of them are what a reciever should have ability to catch the football speed and strength both have those but last season one had a better qb and one didn’t but all that doesn’t matter we could have opinions but the facts will be shown when they both step on the nfl field 💯

I'll be picking one of these guys for my fantasy rookie draft. Everyone says Harrison is the best, but when I watch them it seem like Marv doesn't create much separation. With Nabers it seems like there isn't anyone within 5 yards of him when he catches it. And he torches defenders and is way better after the catch than Marv. Let me know what you guys think. Who should I pick? I need help!
