  • Originating from an ancient Indian myth, The Son of Seven Queens is a story of a king who, after being bewitched by an evil sorceress in disguise, is ultimately saved by the son of his seventh wife.
This version of the story is based on the text by Joseph Jacobs, and the imagery has been gathered and simply arranged to help visualise the narration.

    • @manuelaclarin3451
      @manuelaclarin3451 6 лет назад +30

No, what I meant was the _moral_ of the story. *If only* the prince knew how to read then he didn't have to go through all of that trouble and would cut the story in half.
The mothers are blind yes but there are others who could've taught him. Since he was so liked by the people they might as well have taught him or his wife, the princess. He was clearly in danger why did she let her husband roam around clueless.
Oh yeah, not that I thought about it after the mothers had their eyes back they still didn't teach him.

    • @elsagrace3893

Manuela Clarin men roam around clueless. That is the moral of the story.

    • @LadyLocket

I think moral of the story is be happy with what you have ie: don’t cheat on your wife.
Also make the hole bigger and get your mothers out of the dungeon silly!

Ok my lovelies. If you listen to the story, you hear that the original king had no children. So the boy is the only child of the first king. The princess is in another kingdom that the prince finds when he goes to get the eyes of his 7 mothers. So the prince and the princess are not related. The first king (father of the prince) was not spoken of again until the end of the story. The white hind/witch is selfish, she doesn't share, not even with the child of her king. She's a great version of an evil stepmother. The story is amazing.

+QueenBoadicea Yes. Actually in "origional" story tales so often it's the woman in the story who is powerful, a martyr or a hero.
It took WWII to change how they were told.
uh and.. would you marry someone who so easily harms his 7 wives?
I mean what happens when he sets himself to get wife #9?

I guess the 12 sisters from Thai folklore was inspired by this..but there're added details..such as the witch was changed into Yaksha who was the sisters' adoptive mother.. and in the end the prince didn't married the girl..she was left to death while chasing behind her lover and thus both of them reborn..in this life he's the one who chase after her.

Have you ever watched the Jim Henson Series The Storyteller? It has a lot of old tales like this, one of them being about a girl whose 3 brothers where turned into ravens by their evil stepmother and the girl was tasked to not make a single sound for a certain amount of years or they would be that way forever, which she faithfully done except for one sound she made just as the spell was broken - leaving her youngest brother with one wing.

Thank you for sharing this fantastic rendition! It seems to me to be another rendition of Dionysus's tale. In the greek version he does spend many years in India, and supposedly founded a city.
A young man who is noble by birth but lives unrecognised by his father (Zeus) and is altogether without privilege or formal education, is raised solely by women (Hyades). Unlike his father who puts women down, the young man elevates them. He restores his mothers to their former dignity and standing, and marries a young royal prophetess (Ariadne)
He must evade and overcome the challenges set by his father's beautiful but jealous and vengeful queen (Hera) note: in the greek tale it is she herself who is disguised as an old witch/ woman.
During his mission to liberate the women in his life, he dies - but is restored to life by a woman (Athena or Demeter or Rhea).
Hence the significance of his name Dimētōr, meaning two mothers or twice-born, it also refers to him coming back to life after a mortal death.
He earns the common people's love and trust.
He descends to the underworld while attempting to complete his mission

The modern version of the story ends in a slightly different way -- with the Seven Divorce Lawyers. Let's see: domestic abuse, unlawful imprisonment, attempted murder, etc. Those women are going to OWN the whole kingdom after taking the king to court. He'll be lucky if he has a loincloth left to call his own.

Oh my gosh. I was trying to find this story about a month ago! I use to have an old fairytale book with stories that none of my friends or family members know. I believe I got it at a yard sell, but the book became a victim of a new puppy (along with many other books and shoes) and I don't remember the name of it. I believe it was a book of fairytales that aren't as well known as the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen. The only parts I remembered was the necklace of eyeballs, not being afraid of demons, and a princess that was clever. I had forgotten the rest. There was also a story about a prince who was traveling with three golden peaches, I can't remember the rest. I need to find that story too.

After the ending, I couldn't help but feel pissed at the king for his betrayal. I do understand that there was witchcraft at play and he was manipulated, yet I feel like plucking your wives' eyes, throwing them in dungeons to die and then being instantly forgiven after years of separation makes me feel very uncomfortable when it comes to the nature of their marriage. There was even no mention of the wives loving the king. They were simply married. The whole idea of the mothers moving back in with such a person didn't give me the feel of a happily ever after type of story. Wouldn't it have been better if they would have remained with their son? Yes, I am genuinely worried about the mental wellbeing of fictional characters.
(PS. I still don't belive that the witch just lost that 14th eye. Dammit.)
