The scene with Susan throwing the giant syringe at a soldier was based on a similar scene from the old horror movie, "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman", where in THAT version, the soldier gets STABBED with the syringe
I seem to remember that scene from "The Amazing Colossal Man" (1957).
No in attack of the 50ft women she taunts him with it, but she could’ve very easily stabbed him and killed him

Monsters vs. Aliens is a fun, animated, throw back to the horror films of the 60, 70 and 80's. From the monsters like B.O.B to the classic scene's like teenagers on a date until they find something suspicious, it's a nice ode to the monster genre, but very, very kid friendly. The script has some nice adult themed jokes in there that are hidden. The animation is stunning and the 3D is fun as it was one of the first animated films to be converted intom3D. All the voice work is exceptionally well done and the story is cliched but again, fun. Harmless entertainment, but it does not compare to DreamWorks’ best effort.

Man, i remember the giant robot haunting me as a child, especially cause of the whole chase sequence through the city. I literally hid in a closet for an hour when my parents weren't home cause i was very sure it was looking through the window to find me with the red light lmao
Hey Sophie, I'm so glad that you liked this film. It is definitely underrated. I loved it the first time I saw it.
The film actually spoofs what's known as 50s "B-Movie" monster films: "Invaders From Mars" (1953); "War of the Worlds" (1953); "Gojira" (a.k.a. "Godzilla" - 1954); "Creature From the Black Lagoon" (1954); "The Fly" (1958); "The Blob" (1958); "Mothra" (1961). Each of these films should also be on your watch list of classic sci-fi/horror films to react to in the future.

In answer to your question, the robot scanned Susan and the eye turned red because his prime mission was to find the Quantonium, which was then in Susan. Also, the 5-note combination the President played on the keyboard to the alien robot is a reference to the tune that was used in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) to communicate with the alien ship in that movie.

On the “believe in aliens” topic, I’m with you. I do believe in the likely possibility that there are other sentient creatures somewhere in space. But I will never ever believe that “aliens are among us and fly with UFOs”.

11:33 it is an actual thing adopted in space exploration. A music, a light show, radio signals and lots of other things are used to establish potential communications with aliens. There are popular songs on board of the space crafts that were sent far away to space.
This one specifically is the 5 note sequence from 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' (1977), and changes to the theme from 'Beverly Hills Cop' (1984). Fun for people that have seen those movies. :)
The dancing president scene is a reference to the Steven Spielberg movie Close Encounters. At the end they use music to communicate with aliens.

I actually appreciated the way the villain's "backstory" was handled. It was done that way intentionally and I give them props for it's satirical value.

This was the first film my sister saw in 3D because this film was one of those special animated in 3D films
My dad remembers taking her to see it and the opening scene with the meteor flying across the screen, she tried to reach out and grab it
I don't know where I was around that time lol but I always remember that when I watch this film
I also never realized that three actors from The Office (which is my favorite show, btw!) voiced three characters in this film. John Krasinski (who plays Jim) voiced Cuthbert (the boyfriend during the scene where the couple discovers the robot probe), Ed Helms (who plays Andy) voices the News Reporter, and Rainn Wilson (Dwight) voiced Gallaxhar.
And let’s not forget Seth Rogen is gonna be voicing Donkey Kong in the Super Mario Bros movie.

The movie had a video game adaptation and I remember that I played it so much as a kid, Blob was the best character to play with.
I had a coworker at my old store named Susan and I'd constantly say "Suuuuuuusaan" to her. Finally convienced her to watch the movie to understand my reference.
The scene where the president is trying to communicate with the alien robot is taken from an old movie called close encounters of the third kind where they try to communicate also with an alien species through sounds using a piano keyboard.
Fun fact Derek is played by paul Rudd who's best known as scott lang aka Antman from the marvel cinematic universe

I would almost recommend the people get a list of the movies that are being parodied and then watch all those films first. Then you can truly appreciate this film.

Susan aka Ginormica is the reason why I like MvA. Well she has many outfits (Gown, Black Outfit, Alien Outfit) aside from this she also has other outfits (Red outfit in the game and posters, casual outfit in the game, Dark Blue in the Series)
