Not fun fact about this movies story:
Antonio Banderas had a heart attack 6 years ago, and a sequel almost never happened because of it.
If the story feels more emotional and personal, it's because it is.

An interesting detail is also that you never see The Wolf on the map.
Despite him showing up in the dark forest at multiple points, you never see him on the map. Which foreshadows how he isnt bound by physical laws like everyone else, even before we know him as Death. He can just appear when he wants, anywhere.
    Thats a really cool detail.

    • @OsnosisBones

Another interesting thing that was pointed out that I can see upon looking back is that he also only shows up/can be seen by people who are in peril at the time.
He can be seen during the giant fight if you look, his introduction happened while Puss was drinking his sorrows away and potentially approaching overdose, and every subsequent time he appeared was in a situation where Puss was in or just leaving a moment of peril for himself.
And the only time everyone could see him at once was after the big fight where everyone was in danger.

Not to mention when Death reappears to fight Puss, sure we know he's death at this point, but to further confirm it, he was able to walk through the star's deadly wall with no issue, when it killed Jack Horner's last goon and almost killed Baby bear.

Another warning Puss should have noticed but was too scared to was the Wolf's shadow coming under the door. A normal shadow should have only blocked the light shining through the door, its impossible for it to show up on the other side. But it was the literal Shadow of Death being cast on Puss, he was just too frightened to understand the implication of what he was seeing.

His backstory is so horrible and sad, yet he still has so much optimism, appreciates all the good things in life, and just wants to help people. This movie was the complete package!
    - The protagonists were all likeable and fun to watch
    - The story was well balanced and engaging
    - The comedy was really on point, I can't remember the last time I watched a movie that made me laugh so hard so often!
    - The animation was F*CKING SPECTACULAR!!! Like seriously!
    - The soundtrack was amazing; after I saw this movie in theatres, I listened to Fearless Hero on my Spotify multiple times once I got home
    - All the villains were so well done! Goldie Lox in the Bears had a wholesome dynamic that was so fun to watch (plus the comedy with them never failed to make me laugh). Big Jack Horner was so comedically evil, and I loved every second of it. And Death, do I even need to explain, that dude is terrifying! Like, one of the top 3 Dreamworks villains of all time. And considering how much screen time he had, that's impressive!
I hadn't seen the first movie all the way through but from what I had heard, you don't really need to have seen it in order to understand the story in this sequel. Ultimately, I'm glad I saw this movie and between this and the Bad Guys, I think the 2020's could be Dreamwork's decade in terms of animated movies. I can’t begin to tell you how happily surprised I was but Puss in Boots: The Last Wish kept surprising me with how good it was. It’s without a doubt my favorite animated film in the last five years and the best! Death is easily one of the most scariest and darkest villain in any animated film as well as DreamWorks best since Lord Shen from Kung Fu Panda 2. The animation is very reminiscent to Into the Spider-Verse and it works surprisingly well and allows for many beautiful images. If Kung Fu Panda 4 or Shrek 5 has this same style, that would be awesome!
I’m happy to say that Puss in Boots: The Last Wish now joins films like Toy Story 2, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The Dark Knight, The Empire Strikes Back, Shrek 2, and Top Gun: Maverick as sequels that are superior to the original. What an absolute banger of a movie and I'm hyped to see DreamWorks' future!

There's a video where you can see some pretended shots before and after the visual flair is added and the before scenes are ridiculously bad. Especially the scenes of the first fight with the wolf. They're so bad without effect despite looking more realistic.

The first one is actually pretty decent and shows more of Puss' origins before the Shrek movies + Kitty's introduction (the two are absolutely made for each other especially after everything they went through in this sequel!!) -- not a bad watch, I'd recommend if anyone is interested in more backstory and references!

Well we won't have waited too long for Puss in Boots 2. Honestly, it's one of the best movies of 2022 for me. The first film is a childhood memory, so I was looking forward to this one, but I feared a childish side... But not at all !
The animation is thrilling, Potté has a very interesting and well-constructed arc, and his relationship with Kitty is very cute. And the other characters are just as well done: the bear family is both funny and endearing, Big Jack Horner is an antagonist whose decisions surprise me for a family movie, and Perro is easily the most innocent mascot Dreamworks has ever created. (too much...).
But (obviously😏) the best is Death, who has become my favorite Dreamwork antagonist. Until now it was Chen from Kung fu panda 2, whose flaw made him excellent, but Death has so much more: effective design, terrifying presence, complex motivations, in my opinion we have one of the best villains in the world animation, if not THE best that Dreamworks has ever created.
Although the film is not perfect, I would find it hard to describe its flaws, but I must admit that I find it really daring to show themes and scenes to children 😲(I love to imagine the faces of parents who discover his scenes with their children that they had there when I saw the film🤣).
And small detail, but I love the new presentation of Dreamwork from the beginning.

Probably the best thing about Death, is that he's not necessarily a villain, he's a classic Antagonist. Someone to call out Puss's BS and humble him. Because, all Death wanted was for Puss to cherish and value his lives instead of wasting them like he did all his other nine lives. Once he seen that Puss wasn't cowering, and was actually willing to fight and value the one life he has, Death backed down.
Now Jack Horner, HE'S a straight up Villain. That's what I also love about Jack, is that there's no sugar coating of what he is, no sad backstory to make you sympathized with him, just a straight up Villain who wants all the magic in the world and to not share it with anyone.

I just thought of something. In the first fight with Death at the tavern, he is lightning quick and really powerful. However, In the last fight he isn’t as quick and doesn’t seem as strong as he was. I think it’s because he gets stronger the more his victims fear him. Puss was terrified in the first fight, but by the last one he was still intimidated by Death, but faced that fear and was brave. Puss says he could never actually beat Death, but he can knock him down and stop it from taking him today

Pocket full of Posies is in reference to the Black Death, the River of Relaxation is a reference to the river Perrito almost drowned in, and the Path of Quick & Easy Solutions is a reference to "taking the easy way out," i.e. suicide. Fun fact about Death:
His whistling is a reference to El Silbón, a spirit from colombian and venezuelan folklore, appearing as a long-limbed walking corpse wearing a wide-brimmed hat and carrying a sack full of bones. But most notable, and what gave him his name, his whistling tune at night that signifies your impending demise(especially if you are an alcoholic, an abuser, or cheated on your spouse)
If his whistle sounds like he's near, he'll leave you alone. But if it sounds like he's far away, chances are he's standing right behind you.
