Hi. I would love more information on the book. I would like to buy it but need more info before I spend that much money. I would love to know what it covers and how many pages. Is there somewhere I can get that info? I love all your projects!! Thank you for doing the videos. It helps so much
Never heard of "kills" primer! 😂😂😂 jk
Kilz primer is good though!
Very nice. Great way, to give old furniture a more modern look. I often see second hand furniture like that, for next to nothing on resale sites. Well made, mostly real wood...but nobody wants it, because it looks too old fashioned.
Sadly, I don't have a home to furnish, or I would be all over it!
But I love, that there are people, who save these pieces from the dumpster and give them a second life!
Only the people looking for modern stuff. They sell as is for the ones looking for more vintage feel and natural wood color.
I put my oil paint brushes in the a ziploc bag and put them in the freezer so they don't dry up and they last forever.
@alisonkhan4512 Great tip, thanks! 🥰
Do you clean the brushes before storing them in the freezer, or do you put them in there with the paint/stain on them? Thanks
FREEZER! Brilliant! 🏆
@@sarahbecker927 no I put them in wet with paint. Oil paint doesn't freeze. It works with water based paints too. You just have to let them thaw out for 5 minutes,
@@alisonkhan4512 thank you!
I'm going to try doing this with a pair of small bookcases that are not fine wood, but they instead have the gray fake wood finish. I'd like to apply the gel stain very lightly (in "provincial" shade) right over the grey & brush it out. I hope it works!!
What fluffy brush did you use? Brand? Thank you for the video!
Do you sand it first before painting?
So no sanding? As in between primer and the SG paint , I didn’t see that you sanded. None at all? Is the finish smooth?
Love this. What color is in the primer?
She used the paint with primer form Behr that you can see on the video. She mentions the name of the color. She also uses Kilz primer.
Could I use this technique & products for a Handrail Only?
Yes totally! And they’re super durable so would work great for that. Personally my family is really rough on handrails so I would apply a few coats of oil based polyurethane on top just for peace of mind
@@blacksheephouse Great, thank you
I kinda like the original better.... just needs some refurbishing to bring out the glow.
Me too. Finished product was nice, but I cringed some when I saw that gorgeous natural honey brown get painted over.
Me too ... I kinda winced seeing the lovely honey brown get painted over. I'm not a fan of gray, but the finished product looked nice.
What color gel stain did you use
What would you say your most sellable color is?
Please choose wood handle brushes for disposable, not plastic ;)
Unless it was raw wood, anything I've ever gel stained (using it on anything other than raw wood is called glazing) peeled in places. Even sanded surfaces. Never again.
Please.
NO MORE GREY.
This seems like a good painting option for redoing kitchen cabinets since the gel stain makes it so durable. Do you think that would work?
This technique was popular in the 60's and 70's, I still see pieces at auctions. There was a kit you could buy at that time. Btw, nice job, looks great.
We called it “ antiquing”
I fricken love gel stain. I bought a 1980 house with the old cherry colored door frames, moulding, and window sills. I decided to keep the wood trim (with updated moulding, doors, etc.) I found a good color match, and after cleaning and a little prep, I go over the door frames with gel stain using a rag. It really pops out a warmth to the wood and dries with a little sheen. Really nice. I feather brush on the sills. OMG! It looks really nice.
I luv gel stain. So glad I didn't paint it all white. I appreciate wood tones so much more.
Beautiful! I did a coffee table for myself using your technique and it turned out amazing! I used water stain gel and top coated with water based polyurethane. The top was laminate and now looks like real wood! Thanks so much for sharing. Good luck with your book. It sounds really interesting.
Absolutely love it! Found your age while searching for kitchen cabinet paint videos. Would you recommend this technique on wooden kitchen cabinets?
Why did you paint before applying gel stain?
So that the undertone of the beige paint showed through the gel color and to give a base to hide the original color.
Thanks for the video, I'm going to try this on a huge mirror that has a black plastic frame. One thing I'll point out. I feel like the faux wood grain inside the sides of your cabinets should have been verticle to match the outside, as it would have with real wood.
Thanks so much for this video. I have been racking my brain on how to change the color on some things for update and cohesive look thats doable for me. Bless your soul girl and hope book does great
Shannon, what do you think about this technique on kitchen cabinets? Would the smell be too much to do indoors?
You are like my favorite artist. You make me feel as though I could actually do it😅
So beautiful. I have two nearly identical night stands as yours and can't wait to follow your steps.❤
Hey, Shannon! Question for you -- I watched your video from a year ago when you used Rust-Oleum decorative glaze instead of the gel stain. Do you have a preference? Is the gel stain better than the glaze? I'm about to start a project and eager to get it right the first time! Thanks!!
Did you sand first, or not necessary?
Right, it’s not necessary for adhesion with the kills interior/exterior primer
When using an oil based gel stain - or any oil based stain - I highly recommend a top coat/finish.. and a lot of trial and error have led me to one process - and that's a wipe on polyurethane (I make my own). This video can be very helpful to those who aren't familiar with wipe on poly... but I promise you.. it's worth it. Don't leave your project with the stain as the top coat.. it's just like with painted pieces & using water based finish.. the results leave you with a professional looking piece. :). I promise wipe on is the way to go: ruclips.net/video/cef5uFAX2dU/видео.htmlfeature=shared
I have the same thought. I have had trouble however with the wipe on poly lifting the original stain even after waiting a week to dry. Any tips?
@@maleahastommel7488 If you go to the link I included - I recently commented on his video & he replied pretty quickly. He will probably be a huge help. Are you using an oil based stain? I can see how this would absolutely happen with a water based stain. I have never had this happen - but have struggled with tiny bubbles, no matter what kind of brush I used (expensive to cheap - still had problems). I found his video - and wipe-on saved me! :) I've started making my own wipe on poly - and am stunned and pleased at how beautiful it has been coming out. The trick is multiple THIN coats.
I've been doing 3 things now: First & Second coats, I do a spray on oil-based poly, very light sanding between coats (won't matter if it's matte or gloss or anything in between). Then I brush on (with a good poly/finish brush) a full-strength coat, from the can, as THIN as I possibly can (sometimes I'll ad a tiny bit of mineral spirits if it's a particularly thick brand). Don't worry if it's not perfect (brush marks, tiny bubbles, etc). Sand with 220 grit. Then switch to wipe on poly, doing about 3-4 coats, light sanding in between with 300 (or higher) grit. Final coat - use an ultra fine sanding pad OR cut a piece of brown paper bag & use just like sand paper. The finish is perfect. It can take several days - so you have to be patient, but it's worth it. The trick is several THIN coats. Tip: If there are any edges on your item where the cut into the wood exposes the grain (leaving a raw, porous edge), such as in rounded edges on the top, or a "curve" shape (like on the seat of a chair) - I'll spray that with shellac before going forward with the polyurethane.
Cannot wait to try this technique! So pretty. Definitely buying your book!!!!
How long does it take to dry?.... months?
i just did mine yesterday and its already dry so I would say a good 24 hours its 100 degrees where i live so that helps
Watching you, I really want to do this! I have a small space and a lot of stuff! Thank you! Keep up the great work! Some day, I will get to do my dream!
I used that technique many years ago to turn my woodwork from a 90’s light blonde to an old European walnut in my hundred year old stone Tudor home! It looked fabulous. And so easy. I may have used a water based gel stain though.
Hey Shannon, loving your tutorials!! Question … Is there a specific reason you don’t use your silicone pet brush doing this gel stain finish? Wasn’t sure if it was to avoid trashing it with the oil stain or it was part of the look? I’m working on a bedroom set for my daughter. Thanks so much!!
I love your excitement! They look great! I know you posted this video about a year ago, but I have a quick question. Do you finish your pieces with polyurethane? Would you put poly-u on top of gel stain? What do you suggest?
CONGRATS ON UR NEW BOOK!!!🤸♀️🤸♀️🥳🥳
(ps: for the dry time, i have always added this amazing paint additive called "Japan Drier" to my oil paints and/or oil based inks and it always cuts the dry time by at least half and that's me being generous! you can find it in any art store including Michaels usually in the same section as all the oil paints as it is an oil based paint medium meant to speed up drying times. i have never tried it on gel stain specifically but i am going to for my project that i am about to do which is why i am watching this video so i will update my comment as soon as i try it out!)
Hey great video! this video was a perfect find for me as i couldn't decide what color to paint my door and there is a bunch of graffiti on it so staining (well i thought) was going to be out of the question as i was unable to completely get off the ink, even after sanding ~ 7 layers plus of paint/wood! the ink they used had seeped incredibly deep past all the paint and into the wood of my door lmao! but anyways your vid came as a godsend as i just happened to have a bunch of the grey killa/ bin laying around and an unused can of red mahogany varathane laying around so i am about to try your easy to follow method and keep you all updated on how it turns out!!
I just bought this paint its too beautiful my new fav color, did you just apply one coat of paint before the gel stain
I use a clear wax mixed with some paint and a flexible brush in such strokes.
Congratulations on your book, one i must get my hands on! And thank you for sharing your amazing work. I'm anxious to give this a try so i can help my daughter find more economical ways to furnish her home!
It’s been a good 6 hours and the gel stain is tacky. How soon after can I reapply
Beautiful! How well does the finish resist knicks, scratches, etc.? How is it holding up thus far?
I love the way you show how to paint with glase what other color glase that give more golden color? wil
I just bought your book, Shannon and am anxious ...oh so anxious to delve in! You are an amazing person who proves you use what you have and it always turns out beautiful! Thank you for the work.
So if I were to do similar. Use the first 2 paints you used, but if I wanted to do say a walnut gel stain color, I can do that, or does the paint color have to be different then?
This is a great one for my taste, thank you very much!
"We GIRLS?" That's pretty sexist.
I am doing this finish but with a dark beige undertone. Perfect for my studio where I need lots of brightness but want to add visual texture.
how did it turn out the Briarsmoke was too dark for me there is no gray in it at all..
Do you think the gel stain is durable enough to use on laminate floors?
You still need to topcoat gel stains as well as a glaze finish.
Alright sold! Going to try it! Would you apply a poly topcoat as well? I used Retique It and loved it on two end tables and wanted to do it over my daughter’s furniture, it’s black and I want a change however it was over $500 for the Retique it product for that amount of square feet! I’m so glad I found your channel. Thank you!
this is my favorite finish, look, and even one of my favorite colors schemes. Thanks for sharing the exact colors you used. Whst did you end up doing with the inside of the drawer?
Here in Seattle, WA it's a very long dry time. Better to leave it longer when in doubt. Routinely primer is 48 hours, paint a full day (not 2-4 hours).
I have a problem that may make an interesting video. I have a beam on my white ceiling .I would love to get it too look like brown wood. At least woodish. Doesn't have to be wood knots etc. Woodish would be good enough. Maybe even this whole deal would be fine. Or would it? And what colors would one go with for a brown woodish look? Yhanks for sharing.
You could certainly do this finish or any others on my channel to create a wood look on your beam, just tape off the areas needed to protect. XO MaCenna here on youtube recently stripped her wood beam and it looked like it was a real beast of a project 😅
@@blacksheephouse Thanks for responding. The beam in question is ceiing material, but it would look better if it was wood, hence the question.
i want to do a large corner desk...it is cherry wood., but i am only re-doing the surface...found out that it is not solid wood as it is plain colored...love your video., but i wonder if i should use a cherry gel stain or black or even off white..keep changing my mind. any ideas? thanks.
I’m looking for a new finish for a laminate chest of drawers, this might be it. Loved the demo.
Why do so many people use Kilz? The stuff REEKS! I prefer Linzer 1-2-3 which works as well but doesn't smell so toxic. Anyone have an answer? TIA
Do you put a poly over gel stain? If so, do you have to gently sand before each layer of poly?
I think she mentioned you don't necessarily have to add a poly coat.
Fabulous! You are so talented! Thank younfor the teaching!
Wonder if this would work to revert my white trimmed house back to a more natural look? Anyone try it yet? Pros/cons?
I have a landlord special with 1x3s as majority of my trim
Looks great. Congrats on the book, that’s super exciting!! ❤❤❤❤
this looks similar to your pottery barn dupe videos? Just different product/colors?
Yes, you are right 👍
Very nice! If using a water based gel stain would a topcoat be needed?
I did this technique- discovered it on my own 7 years ago - on a table. I did a small side table without a topcoat and a larger table with topcoat. After 7 years of everyday use, all I can say is: Topcoat! Topcoat! Topcoat!
Am confused. Did you use a different paint on the top at the very beginning? You didn't say what it was -- the popular finish. So was that different? Confused. Also, would you recommend durability of gel stain for a child's rocker? Hope you see this and can answer. Thx.
Complete newbie going to try this. Could you share Amazon links to appropriate brushes to have for this project? As this will be my very first time, I haven’t a clue!
I can’t find the Java brown Rustoleum glaze anywhere. Will try this instead. I tried Valspar clear glaze and I’m pretty sure it’s just a clear poly. It dries WAY too fast!
Is the Canyon semi gloss from Behr oil based or latex?? Thanks!!
I used water based/latex acrylic but you could use oil too!
Can you please tell me if I can use a gel stain on my pine doors that we have already applied 5 coats of Danish oil? What do we need to do? Looks like the RUclips creator doesn’t answer questions, so maybe someone else out there can advise me?
Amazing !❤. I just did a gel stain oil based on my banisters just finished. What brand polyurethane? Also do it in semi gloss or satin gloss? What brand? ? Thanks a lot.! JENNIFER , from Colleyville, Texas
I’m hot in the middle of refinishing an old armoire.
Hubby didn’t put enough wood putty in old holes.
Have already primed 2x’s and 1 coat of paint.
I just saw it and the holes are noticeable.
Do we need to sand all the way back down or is there a hack to go on top of paint.
Done and over gray no more gray I’m sick of it. I’m sick of it. I’m sick of it.
You don’t say what color stain you used
I would like to redo my entire dark bedroom set to an off white. I looked at your 1 step paint recipe, is that im place of the expensive 1 step paints that you can paint without sanding? Also not a fan of chalk paint. I have an extra gallin of killz, would it be better to prime that dark wood? I also saw your trick to remove redness from bleeding out of the wood. Depending how the top looks sanded, I might go with the natural wood.🙂
Are you wiping the excess on a rag when you use your small broom to remove the stain?
Yes, if the product build up I do
I tried this on my kitchen table and was so excited about the look. But 10 hours later, it was still completely wet. What am I doing wrong? I would appreciate any help!
Girl! Everything I read says gel stains need a topcoat. Do you not do that? I know you did this on a tabletop. How has that been holding up?
I noticed the Behr paint you used was a paint and primer in one. Could you have skipped the first step of priming with the grey Kills primer?
You should try baby oil. Wipe the brush with paper towels and baby oil and then wash with baby oil and soap combines. No mineral spirits needes.
How much stain did you use for these two? I have 22 church pews I’m refinishing and need to be able to budget this. Have you ever done anything that large?
Can you use the gel stain on mdf?
Another GREAT Video !! ..... 💖⚘️💖
Please wear an appropriate respirator- these chemicals build up in your body & dificult to detox from.
Nice work Shannon! Help! Lol. I'm painting my first piece of furniture. Using the Behr chalk and their recommended primer. 24 hrs later the primer still feels tacky. 😢
So I did the finish with the rustoleum java and it dried I saw a brush bristle in finish tweezered it out and now have an ugly indent how do I fix that?
I tried this technique and it came out beautiful, but, how long does it take the gel stain to dry. It has been at least 36 hours and it is still tacky
Could this be done on dark chocolate colored furniture with white/cream gel stain over top (without priming etc) to lighten wood to this shade? Can you test it out and share with us via video? Love your channel!! 🎉
Would this work on the handrail part of an orange oak railing? What would you seal/protect it with & how many coats? 🤔
My mom wants to know: Do you need to seal if you just apply the primer and behr paint? Can the gel stain be applied over the primer if we don’t use the brush to streak it? Thanks.
do you have a paint + stain combo for walnut finish?
the pottery barn grey is too light for everything else in my home
Such beautiful dresses! You looked gorgeous in each of them! Ad always, another great video! Thank you!
I tried this with a gel stain.. it's been over 24 hours & they are still too wet to touch... what did I do wrong 😂
Hello nice work. Is the gel stain water or oil based for over a latex paint that you are using?
You have spoiled a nice wood furniture. You could have a stain to bring up.
You got me binging your videos. This looks great! Do you think a wood graining tool would work with this?
Do you dilute your oil with water? Because I bought some of the oil and mine is super thick.
I need to this on my kitchen table. It keeps getting stained by hot stuff or cold I am just too tired but i like my table it’s not real wood should I sanded or just use prime and then at the gel coat
I have a light colored dresser that has the wood grain laminate. Can I just clean it and then use the gel stain over it to give it that weathered gray look without having to print them and do a solid paint?
Do you have a video showing this Finish on an unfinished butcher block??
What would a piece like this sell for? I'm new to this kind of finishes.
Is this finish durable enough for heavy use area like bathroom vanities and kitchen cabinets?
Curious if i need to prime solid pine prior to applying the paint and gel stain. I sanded down the dresser and its nice wood underneath
So I loved the base paint color and I did that then I used the gel stain color you used on amazon and I swear my color looks a lot more brown then your gray color, but I went ahead and used it
what?! Such a bummer, I'm sorry! I'm sure you did but just want to double check that you gave the gel stain a good stir before you got going?? But ya, mine is a warm grey color and I have had several people comment theirs came out too gray so this is the first time I am hearing about the brown. Varathane does sell a more gray gel stain but I havent used it.
@@blacksheephouse I did stir it up but not like i would paint so maybe it wasn't enough I wish I could show you a picture, maybe i used to much paint also I tried to go lightly its so weird, but Its definitely me the way I painted and maybe the brushed I used, and I got a deck brush but way no luck.Thank you for getting back to me!
