Hi. Love this channel! I am going to try this on my white dining room table. Two questions" 1. The original paint isn't Fusion Mineral Paint. I have no idea what it is. 2. Do I have to sand before applying Fusion Stain? Thanks!
Thank you so much! If you are staining over existing paint and don't know what it is I would at least scuff sand it in case there is any clear coat on it - if it was waxed it will not accept the oil based stain - just keep that in mind
It’s best to use over fresh paint or you would want to scuff sand your current paint for better adhesion. I have never used over household paint, so I can’t say exactly how it will go, I would test an area or do a test board if you can
Hi, I just took took paint off of a table and chairs. The white paint that was stripped off is embedded deep into the wood in areas. Want to stain it now, was told the stain would not adhere to thise areas. Wondering what this would look like on that. Its mostly the legs that have the residual white imbedded. What do you think?
So glad this was in my feed, I’ve researched so much and had no luck. I’m working a dining table that has a lot of water damage on the veneer and odors Had to prime it with bin shellac and it lost the wood look 😔. May have to try this ❤️
This is awesome! We just bought a new build home with white banisters and spindles. Do you think this would be fine for the banisters if I lightly sand them first (they're very shiny)? I want to stain them a pretty dark brown...
I saw product on Amazon..would expresso be good if I want a much darker stain over white table?? And if the paint has been on for awhile, do I paint it again or just sand
So other stains do have the same open time as this particular product (his has a 10 min open time) which allows to create this look very easy. You can try but know that other stains have a max open time of 2 min, making it harder to apply, wipe back and blend as easily. I have never done over paint that has been on for a while, so I can’t say, but I think it would be best to apply a fresh coat for best adhesion.
Hi where did you buy that stain? I want to do my kitchen cabinets that were painted white but I think I need another product over them first. Thank you
This always work best on a freshly painted surface - but you can use over previously painted if you clean and scuff sand them finely - the stain will need something to grab onto
Water based acrylic, any of the furniture paints and a less glossy finish is best. Stay away from Latex for furniture, it will not adhere well and peel
Thank you - no, gel stain sit on top and doesn't penetrate, this will, its also thin like a normal stain and it has an open time of 10 min - so easy to manipulate - gel stain is not.
Love this video very helpful! I have already painted my table top with a cream colored Behr Premium Satin cabinet paint. Will this stain work on that type of paint?
This is gorgeous!..have a white buffet that I want to do something different to the top..cannot wait to try! Have you ever lightly sanded the top or do you just go right over paint?? Want the driftwood look...
I have only done it over fresh paint, it’s fresh and free of any cleaners or oils from hands. However, if you wiped it down and did a light scuff sand. As for colors this particular stain which works well on painted surfaces comes in a few colors, it depends what look you want, how light or dark the grey is etc. they make a black that may work - hard to say without seeing 😀
Good morning! Thanks for this great video which makes it look so easy with an amazing result! Quick question: 10 min open time, you apply and work it for 10 minutes and walk away! How long do you walk away for before you wipe it off? Thanks in advance.
Hi. It just means you have up to 10 min to work with and wipe it back before it sets, you can wipe back immediately if you want, you just don’t have to rush like most stains that need to be wiped back immediately. This is helpful when you are blending their stains as well as working to achieve a certain look.
If one coat gets your desired look then do you need to apply any layers of SFO in natural to get the durability if doing a dining room table? Also would the natural yellow over time?
I would suggest adding the natural for added durability - they say it can yellow over white. This is what they say about it - Please keep in mind that all oil based products typically yellow in time. Using this over top of a white paint, will cause a slight yellowing effect. We recommend our Tough Coat for going over lighter colours to avoid yellowing.
Wow! This is beautiful. I’ve got a whitewash table that I want to modify to match my new kitchen; which has espresso cabinets. I love my table set. Part of the table is whitewash and the rest is not. Can I do this over the whitewash and make a shade darker than what you did? If so how? Thanks I’m advance
This works over fresh paint or bare wood best. You would want to scuff sand so that there is good adhesion any existing . If you want more detailed instruction - I would be happy to do a virtual one on one with you - you can reach out through my website www.borninabarnboutique.net
You always have such easy-to-follow videos. Thanks...super easy & cool look! I'm working on some old doors. Maybe do a little distressing of the paint before the stain. But brilliant to have the topcoat already incorporated. What a time saver.
I have a wood antique step stool with the fold out steps that I’ve been working on for far too long. I’ve stripped, sanded, repeatedly. Could I instead paint it white and stain it the color I desire? Gel/liquid stain? I’ve come this far I don’t want to see this particular shade of green anymore & as you can imagine, with this piece there are a lot of corners.
Yes you absolutely can! I prefer the Fusion SFO, it has a longer open time to work with and for this look, it's all I have used so I can't speak to other stains. Water based stains absorb and dry pretty darn fast, making it hard to work (unless using water to activate and blend). Traditional oil based stains have an open time of 2-3 minutes, so you have to work quickly. The fusion stain has a 10 minute open time, thus being easier to work with
Does it matter what color paint is underneath. I have raw silk but was wondering if I should use cathedral taupe to try and acheipve a oak type color with the sfo like you use
Great video. I applied Driftwood SFO over Fusion Raw Silk dresser tops and very happy with the turn out. I was nervous to try this technique but your video helped. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and making videos.
Can I use this over Sherwin latex semi gloss paint? I painted my kitchen cabinets a white color but I’m unhappy with how plain they are. I’d like to add a little depth and character to them with this! Thank you!
Well I have never used over latex paint, if you can I would test on an area. You want the stain to have something to grab onto - so try scuffing it up and then applying
No that’s the finishing oil part, it’s a top coat. This is a two for one product - stain and topcoat in one. I mention that in the video, super durable and no need for added topcoat.
I noticed the website said it yellows over time if painted over white paint. What base color would you recommend if using cappuccino a d wanting a similar result as to what you did in the video? And water or oil based paint?
If you are using as a topcoat it will definitely change the color of your paint, but if you using like I am here to actually create a stained look the yellowing wouldn't be noticeable like it would if you were just going over white paint - this is more about creating a look, I would say this changed the paint look immediately yellowing but you don't see it because you are creating a stained look - does that make sense? Yes you would use cappuccino if you want a similar look to mine. I would recommend water base furniture paint - I don't use oil based paints on furniture.
So most every product paint, stain and topcoat have a dry time and a cure time. This product depending on your climate dries down within 8 hours for re-coating. Cure time for this particular product is a 10 day cure time 😀
So pretty!! Has anyone done this with a white wash then minwax oil based stain? I plan on doing a white wash and the stain 2 days after so no interactions happen if any. I accidentally sanded down to far and can’t use just stain now.
I’m wondering the same thing. I ended up doing a paint followed by rust oleum gel stain, but it’s not quite the right color, and I’d like to try a MinWax wood finish on top, but not sure if it’ll take over painted wood. I’m 90% done and satisfied and don’t want to mess it up!

Looking for help. I have a bedroom set that was washed oak. I painted it antique white chalk paint 6 years ago. I’d like it to be a dark wood now. What can I do?
You could strip and sand to bare wood and stain, that will give you the truest look of a dark wood look Or you can paint it darker and then use the SFO in cappuccino over it
I don't recommend latex paint on wood furniture and have never used it, so I can't say yes here. The stain needs something to grab onto and latex paint can be too smooth so it may not adhere and last long.
I just painted my cabinets , they don't have to be perfect at all. But I was wondering if they could be stained after . They are a dark greenish , can I put a lighter stain on them to just tone down a bit?
So the stain won’t lighten overall when going over a dark color unfortunately - I’m not sure it would give you the look your going for - since stains are sheer - dark works over a light paint color - but putting a light stain over a dark paint wont give you the lighter look very much
Thanks again for yet another great tutorial. You are indeed my go to for my desire to begin painting my old pieces of furniture. Kimberly, I know you answered another's question in regards to staining over paint. You said not necessary as it has a built in top coat. As you yourself usually top coat over fusion mineral paint on top of high traffic areas and the paint also has a built in top coat, I'm wondering if a top coat would still be beneficial over the stain and finishing oil? I'll be trying your technique on bedside tables and a dresser. Hoping you can assist. Cheers and thanks again for being so great at what you do.
So I have never used this stain over a stain or a stain wit poly in it. I would try a test section to see how it works together first. I’m not too sure it will adhere well as you are using a water based stain with poly and then applying the SFO (an oil based stain with built in top coat).
So most oil based stains have an open time (time you can work with it before setting) 2 min. Water based is even faster, so I don't recommend - this stain is a stain an d top coat in one and it has a 10 minute open time which allows you to work with it longer and achieve the look
Absolutely gorgeous! I loved this video! It was super helpful! Thanks so much! Just wondering, do you have a video using the Fusion Mineral Paint in the driftwood color over a painted surface?
Thank you for this great video. I want to do this to our end tables which are white, with the Fusion Driftwood. I am not sure what they were originally painted with, latex or oil base paint. I see that the Fusion is an oil based stain so can I still use it or is there a way of finding out what paint is on the end table's? Thank you.
Thank you - It’s hard to tell what type of paint is on a piece. I would suggest scuffing it up just a tad to create good adhesion with the stain and give it a try, you never know sometimes u less you go for it! 😀
Unfortunately in this formula they don't have a darker brown than the espresso - the key with this product is the open time - it is 10 min whereas normal stain is 2 min making it harder to apply and wipe back fast enough and get a good end result. You can certainly try it with traditional oil based stains - but I can't speak to that experience as I have not used it for this look
So 8 hours is what the label says, I err on the side of caution and just let it dry overnight. Depending on your climate it can take longer (humidity vs dry climate)
Great video, clear, concise and very informative, thanks! I had to view it again to see how you exactly did the sides of the top. But I'm assuming you just lightly wipe back the opposite left/right side ends so you don't mess up the top's finish for those ends. Any tricks or tips for this?
Thank you! Yes I just wipe them back the same way until I reach the desired look I'm trying to achieve. I apply to the top and sides all and then concentrate on the top first and then do the same wiping action to the sides. Yes its hard to get up close but then show the entire piece, but same exact process.
I painted with Dixie Bell mineral and used the Fusion on the top over it. It’s been about 18 hours and is a little sticky. I need to add more as I want it darker. Is it being sticky normal for a while?
Depending on what you layer over it and your weather conditions - it can take longer to dry. I have never experienced that, but have seen on many forums people have experienced this. I don't feel like its normal though since I have used this for years and never had issues (im in a dry climate) but after 8 hours I have always found it to be dry and good to go!
Thank for this video! I am very new (only 3 pieces for myself - not confident enuff to sell yet!) U explain so well and make it all look so easy! I want to do a grey washed wood look on top of an end table. - what color paint and stain do u suggest?
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thanks, yes I will go buy the Fusion stain tomorrow. I primed my table top now and will paint tomorrow and stain afterwards. I will get my stained look yet!!
Question…..I did a wood painted plant stand two days ago with gel stain, it is still very tacky to the touch any suggestions? Also….what do I use over stain when done to protect it, varnish, polyurethane? Thanks!
Gel stains do take longer to dry especially in humid conditions. I don’t use much get stain anymore. Just let it sit for a few days. Gel stains don’t penetrate the wood, they sit on top, so depending on climate it can take longer to set up. I use General Finishes high performance top coat for all my projects. You can seal with a water based poly after 72 hours or an oil based poly - either are great topcoats
It’s always a good idea (not always necessary) to prime for better adhesion and little chance of bleed through so I say it depends on the piece - but you can never go wrong taking the extra step
I am currently painting a desk with white acrylic, matte chalk paint. Is this going to work well with this stain? I just read that chalk paint could be an issue.
So I used it on Fusion which is a matte acrylic mineral paint. I have never used this over chalk paint but not sure why it would be an issue! If in doubt to a test first on a scrap piece 😀
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thank you for your reply. I will test it out first. I think it should work since it is acrylic and a matte finish. Enjoying your ideas so much. Thank you for the inspiration. Pat
So this is not a gel stain, this is an oil based stain and topcoat in one and will not sit well just on top of laminate, I would recommend painting first like I did here - you will have a better long-lasting outcome 😀

I’m working a dining table that has a lot of water damage on the veneer and odors
Had to prime it with bin shellac and it lost the wood look 😔.
May have to try this ❤️
I’m glad you found me too! It’s a perfect look when the wood has to be painted but you still want a stained look! Good luck!
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you 😊
This is awesome! We just bought a new build home with white banisters and spindles. Do you think this would be fine for the banisters if I lightly sand them first (they're very shiny)? I want to stain them a pretty dark brown...
Yes. I would try a test section first if you can to ensure this is what you want!
Thank you
This always work best on a freshly painted surface - but you can use over previously painted if you clean and scuff sand them finely - the stain will need something to grab onto
the furniture turns out so beautiful! What's the best choice for the paint to go with before staining? latex or acrylic? flat, chalk or glossy?
Water based acrylic, any of the furniture paints and a less glossy finish is best. Stay away from Latex for furniture, it will not adhere well and peel
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thank you! 😊
it looks beautiful. is that kinda like gel stain?
Thank you - no, gel stain sit on top and doesn't penetrate, this will, its also thin like a normal stain and it has an open time of 10 min - so easy to manipulate - gel stain is not.
Love this video very helpful! I have already painted my table top with a cream colored Behr Premium Satin cabinet paint. Will this stain work on that type of paint?
I’m so glad! So I haven’t done it over that particular paint, it should be ok, but I would suggest trying it with a test piece first if you can
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thanks!
I absolutely LOVE you!! You are the cutest!! I could watch you all day! So much talent!! ❤️😎
Awe thank you so much! Thank you for watching! 😀
This is gorgeous!..have a white buffet that I want to do something different to the top..cannot wait to try! Have you ever lightly sanded the top or do you just go right over paint?? Want the driftwood look...
Thank you. Yes you can scuff sand your painted surface if you like, it’s not necessary but you can if you like , I always just apply over fresh paint
Do you think the result be similar over a flat white ceiling paint that I painted on as a primer?
It would be a bit brighter but still nice - the color I used was more creamy/taupe, this looks good over slot of base colors - do a test If you csn
Can I do this over furniture that's already painted grey? What color stain would you suggest?
I have only done it over fresh paint, it’s fresh and free of any cleaners or oils from hands. However, if you wiped it down and did a light scuff sand. As for colors this particular stain which works well on painted surfaces comes in a few colors, it depends what look you want, how light or dark the grey is etc. they make a black that may work - hard to say without seeing 😀
What color stain are you using. This is beautiful and I have recently started to restore furniture.
Hi thank you! I always put in the shoe notes if I forget to mention in the video! It is cappuccino!
Thanks. I recently just did a bedroom set. It looks so good. I don't know I was capable of doing that. Lol. Thanks for your tips
@@candicehall8156 that’s awesome I am so glad it worked well, yes we are our own hardest critic and typically underestimate what we can do! 👏🏻
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thanks. Got you and thanks for clarifying. Have a super day. I truly enjoy your tutorials.
How do you do the drawers, if you want them the same?
Do you put any type of sealer on afterward?
@@cwmwcw you can but not necessary - it has a built in top coat and is very durable
You always have such easy-to-follow videos. Thanks...super easy & cool look! I'm working on some old doors. Maybe do a little distressing of the paint before the stain. But brilliant to have the topcoat already incorporated. What a time saver.
Thank you! It is a great product!
The fusion stain has a 10 minute open time, thus being easier to work with
Well, I've done the first coat and loving the look! But I think I may have taken off too much. How long should I wait for a second coat?
At least 8 hours depending on your climate - I like to just wait until the next day to be sure it’s dry
@@BorninaBarnBoutique , thank you. Finished it today. Am very happy with it! Thank you so much for your help!
@@gwhaas6218 awesome! I’m so happy! You are so welcome
Beautiful! Thank you for showing this. Question: what if you want a dark final look? Do you apply multiple coats?
Of course and thank you! Yes you would apply multiple coats of the stain - just make sure you yield the dry time in between coats
Beautiful! And ❤️ that it doesn’t look too hard! 👍🏻
Would this hold up in UV? Thinking about doing my front door like this instead of stripping it down to bare wood then staining.
So there are many exterior rated paints but I would check the Fusion mineral paint website on the specs of the stain.
Does it matter what color paint is underneath. I have raw silk but was wondering if I should use cathedral taupe to try and acheipve a oak type color with the sfo like you use
Thank you! Did you then seal it with anything?
No the Stain and Finishing Oil has a built in topcoat and is extremely durable - was made for flooring!
Great video. I applied Driftwood SFO over Fusion Raw Silk dresser tops and very happy with the turn out. I was nervous to try this technique but your video helped. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and making videos.
Thank you! That’s great to hear, so glad! Of course! 😀
Can you use that over any paint or only fushion mineral paint? It's beautiful! Thanks for the tips!
You can use over any paint! Thank you so much / thanks for watching!
Beautiful 🤩 Do you need to put a shellac on top of the stain when finished to protect? Thanks.
No that’s the finishing oil part, it’s a top coat. This is a two for one product - stain and topcoat in one. I mention that in the video, super durable and no need for added topcoat.
Does is matter what type of paint is underneath? Latex, Acrylic, Oil, etc.
This works really well with a mineral type paint (water based acrylic)
Yes that makes sense. Thank you so much!! Looking forward to trying 🙂
Does it dry down all the way or does it need to be cured ?
This is awesome! Also, I need to purchase an new electric sander, which one would you suggest?
So depends on your budget. My first sander that I had for years was a Dewalt orbital - amzn.to/38pj1G0- variable speed.
Good sander, then I upgraded to my Mirka and Surfprep. I have a discount code for all things surfprep if you would like, they offer many different sander types. Discount Code: Barn10
Thank you so much!
Looking for help. I have a bedroom set that was washed oak. I painted it antique white chalk paint 6 years ago. I’d like it to be a dark wood now. What can I do?
You could strip and sand to bare wood and stain, that will give you the truest look of a dark wood look Or you can paint it darker and then use the SFO in cappuccino over it
Can I use this technique over latex paint?
I don't recommend latex paint on wood furniture and have never used it, so I can't say yes here. The stain needs something to grab onto and latex paint can be too smooth so it may not adhere and last long.
I just painted my cabinets , they don't have to be perfect at all. But I was wondering if they could be stained after . They are a dark greenish , can I put a lighter stain on them to just tone down a bit?
So the stain won’t lighten overall when going over a dark color unfortunately - I’m not sure it would give you the look your going for - since stains are sheer - dark works over a light paint color - but putting a light stain over a dark paint wont give you the lighter look very much
If after staining over paint you want to paint over it ( maybe your not happy with the look)can you apply paint over a dried stain surface?
Yes this stain cures in 10 days and can be painted over after that time 😀
😮 Serious??? This is gorgeous!
Thank you!
Thank you! You can, but honestly it’s really not necessary. You could top with the natural SFO for a little extra sheen and more layers of protection.
Also the table I painted with CHAULK paint is like a grey blue color. What color stain should I use over that. Thx again!!
You can and I would suggest the driftwood it is a grey that would go nice over a blue grey paint color - they don’t have too many colors in the stain
Could this work if a wooden table is already painted black? Or does the wooden table need to be white first?
Well the issue would be that it won’t really show up on the black, so having a lighter under color helps shape the look
Hi I got water based stain plus poly is that going to work on my front door with green color base paint?
So I have never used this stain over a stain or a stain wit poly in it. I would try a test section to see how it works together first. I’m not too sure it will adhere well as you are using a water based stain with poly and then applying the SFO (an oil based stain with built in top coat).
When you are doing the edges of the top do you leave it solid or do you wipe back the edges. It looks solid but I’m not sure. Thank you
No I wipe back the entire piece including the edges, the angle of the video may have made it look darker but I blend it all out
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you
Can you use any stain with this technique or does it have to be the Fusion stain and finishing oil?
So most oil based stains have an open time (time you can work with it before setting) 2 min. Water based is even faster, so I don't recommend - this stain is a stain an d top coat in one and it has a 10 minute open time which allows you to work with it longer and achieve the look
Absolutely gorgeous! I loved this video! It was super helpful! Thanks so much! Just wondering, do you have a video using the Fusion Mineral Paint in the driftwood color over a painted surface?
Hi and thank you! I do not. I have a video using the driftwood stain but not over paint - it’s over bare wood
@@BorninaBarnBoutique I will definitely check that out! Thanks so much!!
That is so interesting! I had no idea you could do that. It looks beautiful.
Thank you! 😀
Such a beautiful piece. You've inspired me to try it!! Thank you!
Thank you! 👏🏻 have fun!
It is nice bit I'm wanting to do my old bathroom cabinets that are painted white I want to do them in a dark expresso brown is that possible?
Unfortunately in this formula they don't have a darker brown than the espresso - the key with this product is the open time - it is 10 min whereas normal stain is 2 min making it harder to apply and wipe back fast enough and get a good end result. You can certainly try it with traditional oil based stains - but I can't speak to that experience as I have not used it for this look
Wow you’re skilled. Thank you!
FYI: you came up first in my keyword search for paint & stain 🙌
Thank you so much and thanks for that info that’s nice to know 😀
Loved watching this, such a beautiful effect 😍
Thank you!
What kind of paint do you use? Semi gloss etc? I would think certain ones absorb more of the stain?
I use fusion mineral paint and it’s more of a matte finish.
Did you put a protect coat over the stain?
No - this has a very durable built in top coat - its a stain and finish in one!
Quick question… How long do I have to let the FUSIAN stain and finish in oil dry before I apply another coat?
Awesome video, thanks for sharing! Very helpful for first timers!
I am so glad - thank you for watching
I painted with Dixie Bell mineral and used the Fusion on the top over it. It’s been about 18 hours and is a little sticky. I need to add more as I want it darker. Is it being sticky normal for a while?
Depending on what you layer over it and your weather conditions - it can take longer to dry. I have never experienced that, but have seen on many forums people have experienced this. I don't feel like its normal though since I have used this for years and never had issues (im in a dry climate) but after 8 hours I have always found it to be dry and good to go!

not sure if this helps or not but you can stain veneer. Veener is wood just a very thin piece
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thanks so much!
If you paint a wood surface and you know you're going to stain over, should you use primer for the paint? Primer, Paint, Stain?
Pat
I have a light color dresser that has a light colored wood laminate. Can I just use gel stain over that? Or do I have to paint then gel stain?
So this is not a gel stain, this is an oil based stain and topcoat in one and will not sit well just on top of laminate, I would recommend painting first like I did here - you will have a better long-lasting outcome 😀
@@BorninaBarnBoutique do you think I can give it a weathered gray look with wax?
@@chandascorner possibly with a black wax you may be able to achieve that look over a light cool tone paint, see if you can do a little test piece to try it out
If we want it darker can we put more layers or not wipe it ?
You can add more layers, if you’d int wipe back, it will take longer to dry, so just be patient waiting for it to dry well 😀
Hi. It’s awesome that you have done this. So I applied my wood stain over paint. Left it over night but it has not dried it. Any suggestions please.. thanks so much
Strange, even after wiping back its not dry? Dry time is 8 hours on this. I have stained with this product and not wiped back as well, leaving overnight, without issue of it not drying. Perhaps, your climate is very humid? you many need longer dry time if that is the case. I have never experienced this and use this product regularly.
